LDOMs - 2 problems

Greetings,
Have a pair of Netra T2000's (8 cores, 8GB RAM) running Solaris 10 5/09 and the latest LDOM's software. Both servers have been upgraded to the latest firmware in attempt to resolve these problems (didn't help)
Problem 1 - host msclab35
I used ldmconfig to set up my inital domains - worked fine. I would like to add additional network interfaces to my domains. This works OK on one of my T2000's but does not work on the other T2000. They have identical or at least very nearly identical configurations on each T2000.
# ldm ls

# ldm add-vswitch net-dev=e1000g1 primary-vsw1 primary
LDom primary did not respond to request to configure VIO device
Problem 2 - host msclab36
My second problem is with msclab36.
I am trying to reconfigure the primary domain to use only 1GB of RAM. By default, ldmconfig set up the primary domain with 2GB.
ldm set-memory 1G primary This command succeeds after a reboot on msclab35 but after rebooting msclab36, the server will not boot.

WARNING: /pci@7c0/pci@0: Standard Capability Config access failedTo boot the server, I have to reset the system through the ALOM console. Unfortunately, when I do get it to boot back up, it does not come up with the configuration I requested (1GB of RAM in the primary domain). It reverts back to the old configuration of 2GB.
Again, the latest firmware was applied (6.7.5) to try to solve this and it did not help. I retried setting the memory to 1GB several times, this happens each time.
Any ideas? Thanks.
EDIT I just noticed a twist on this problem - my other T2000, msclab35 will boot up with 1G of memory, but on any subsequent boots, it reverts back to the 2GB configuration. It doesn't have any problems booting like msclab36, though. WTF?
EDIT 2 on msclab35, I noticed this also. It says this even after I reboot several times.

Hi there,
I have exactly the same problem which happened yesterday.
ERROR: /pci@780: Improperly aligned address. function: b4
WARNING: /pci@780/pci@0: Standard Capability Config access failed
ERROR: /pci@7c0: Improperly aligned address. function: b4
WARNING: /pci@7c0/pci@0: Standard Capability Config access failedEvery time I reboot the server, I also need to reset the server in SC console.
Are there any solutions update??
Regards,
Pledy

  • LDOM Disk problem

So I'm having two problems with installing my first guest domain in my new ldom installation, first one is in a previous thread and is network boot related. However the more serious of the two issues is disk related. I am using an image file created on the control domain as the main disk for the machine, but my jumpstart is failing with some weirdness that I don't really understand related to this disk. Below is the output when it fails

It's fixable by using the sc> prompt
    bootmode config="factory-default"
But as soon as I run through the setup (set vcpu/memory/vsw/etc) of the primary ldom, the problems resume.
Anyone else seen similar crashing on boot?
I'm open to ideas if anyone else has seen something similar.

So I tried again, and this time I got a command prompt. I same errors, but I tried to make the bge1 on vsw*0*
So no crashing, but no plumb on bge1 or vsw0, so I decided to try and force it.

  • LDOM and portmapper problems

I have recently set the latest version of LDOMS up on a T2000 Server, all was going quite well, however I seem to be having an issue doing jumpstart install of my first guest domain.
When booting over the network using boot net:dhcp - install I am getting the initial Solaris boot messages and then a portmapper error:
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_120011-14 64-bit
Copyright 1983-2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
WARNING: pmap_kgetport: Portmapper not responding; still trying
This portmapper error will continue down the screen until i power off the guest.
However once in approx every 4-5 boots this problem doesn't happen and the machine boots as normal. The install then fails because it can't find a disk but thats another problem, I'm more concerned initially about solving the network boot problem.
Any clues on what is causing this or how to troubleshoot gratefully received.
BTW Physical clients build from the jumpstart without this problem

    Rod,
As I understand it there are no technical reasons not to use both [non global] zones and LDoms on the same server. In some cases I think using zones in an LDom is encouraged.
    Keep in mind that:
    1. when you change the server to LDom ALL Solaris instances will run in LDom - you can not run LDom and non LDom at the same time.
    2. you will need a "Primary control I/O" LDom in addition to the LDom(s) that you are testing - the Primary-control-I/O LDom could be your current Test-Dev Solaris instance (I'm not sure this would be recommended - but you did say this is a Test-Dev box.).
    3. each LDom needs real hardware including memory, CPU(s), disk space, network connection - you could share the disk and network but the CPUs and memory are not.
A good place to get additional info on LDoms is the [LDoms Community Cookbook|http://wikis.sun.com/display/SolarisLogicalDomains/LDoms+Community+Cookbook]
    hope this helps.

  • Dsee 6.2, idsconfig, vlv index processing problems

    Hey Folks,
I ran into a problem where the idsconfig script failed on creating 4 vlvindex entries. I had to modify the script to allow me to troubleshoot the problem. I ended up fixing the problem manually, but I'm still not to sure why it happened to begin with. It seems like a race condition, but i could be dead wrong. I thought it might have been the way I answered the idsconfig questions but I went over it quite a bit. This post may be a bit long, but I want to provide enough information.
    - Solaris 10 08/07 fully patched (using smpatch) as of 1/10/2008
    - DSEE 6.2
    - idsconfig that comes bundled with Solaris 10 08/07
    - All this is being done inside a logical domain (ldom) on a T2000 using a file image as a disk
The first thing I did was make the following modifications to the idsconfig script so it would not exit on error while adding vlv index entries, and also commented out the cleanup process so I could view the temp file created by idsconfig
Original Code from the add_vlv_indexes() function:
             # Add the index.
             ${EVAL} "${LDAPMODIFY} -a ${LDAP_ARGS} -f ${TMPDIR}/vlv_index_${i} ${VERB}"
             if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
${ECHO} "  ERROR: Adding VLV index for ${i} failed!"
                 cleanup
                 exit 1
             fiSame code, after my modifications:
             # Add the index.
             ${EVAL} "${LDAPMODIFY} -a ${LDAP_ARGS} -f ${TMPDIR}/vlv_index_${i} ${VERB}"
             if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
${ECHO} "  ERROR: Adding VLV index for ${i} failed!"
                 #cleanup
                 #exit 1
fiHere is the full output of the way I used idsconfig to configure the directory:

I have read blogs about others running this script on dsee 6.x successfully, so thinking its a bug doesn't seem right.
If anyone wants me to test something or provide more info, i'd be happy to.
    Thanks for reading,

Thanks for the response. Sorry about not including the logs. I should have. I have gathered the full logs during the time idsconfig was trying to add the vlvindex entries. I did see that there where a few err=32 codes on the ADD operations on the entries that I had to add manually.
Here is one thing I did notice when I was adding the 4 entries manually. In each of the ldif files idsconfig creates, there are 2 entries as in the following example.
    dn: cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config
    objectClass: top
    objectClass: vlvSearch
    cn: example.edu_passwd_vlv_index
    vlvbase: ou=people,dc=example,dc=edu
    vlvscope: 1
    vlvfilter: (objectClass=posixAccount)
    aci: (target="ldap:///cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config")(targetattr="*")(version 3.0; acl "Config";allow(read,search,compare)userdn="ldap:///anyone";)
    dn: cn=example.edu.getpwent,cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config
    cn: example.edu.getpwent
    vlvSort: cn uid
    objectclass: top
objectclass: vlvIndex After idsconfig was done running the entry with the dn of "dn: cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm database,cn=plugins,cn=config" was created, but the "dn: cn=example.edu.getpwent,cn=example.edu_passwd_vlv_index,cn=example,cn=ldbm" was not created.
This is weird because according to the logs (if i am reading them right) the add operation for the dn that was actually created seemed like it failed.

  • Guest LDOM disk access through multiple IO domains

    Hi All,
I am working on a configuration, wherein the boot disk to the Guest LDOM is being provided through an image file hosted on a VxVM diskgroup (vmdg1). The configuration has another copy of the same image file being provided through another VxVM diskgroup (vmdg2)l through another virtual disk service.
let me clear the configuration a little more in detail
A T-5240 server having 2 IO domains configured
Primary (Control domain + IO domain + Service domain) configuration
A VxVM diskgrop (vmdg1) having a boot image file
Secondary (IO domain + Service domain) configuration
A VxVM diskgroup (vmdg2) having a copy of the boot image file
these devices are exported through their respective virtual disk services with the same mpgroup name to a guest LDOM. The vdsisk is then assigned to the guest ldom which is using the volume through the primary service.
When the guest LDOM is started it starts with the disk export through the Primary domain. All writes happen fine. When the VxVM diskgroup is deported from the Primary the Guest LDOM still remains online as starts using the disk image path through the secondary domain.
I then bring the VxVM diskgroup and the mounts back online on the Primary domain and deport the diskgroup from the secondary domain to see if it failsback to the image through the Primary domain. The Guest LDOM now is in a hung state and does not allow access through the local console or through network logins.
Has anyone see such a problem? Also is it recommended to use disk based image as a backend device in mpgroups through "ldm add-vdsdev" ?
    TIA,
    Sudhir

As far as I know then only way to "re-balance" the I/O across the domains is to unbind/bind the guests. Not a great answer, but this could be done as part of the guests patching cycle.
I think there is an RFE to provide MPxIO-like features to guests.

  • Any "Best Practice" regarding use of zfs in LDOM with zones

I have 3 different networks and I want to create a guest-domain for each of the three networks on the same control domain.
Inside each guest-domain, I want to create 3 zones.
To make it easy to handle growth and also make the zones more portable, I want to create a zpool inside each guest domain and then a zfs for each zoneroot.
By doing this I will be able to handle growth by adding vdisks to the zpool(in the guest domain) and also to migrate individual zones by using zfs send/receive.
In the "LDoms Community Cookbook", I found a description on how to use zfs clone in the control domain to decrease deploy time of new guest domains:
" You can use ZFS to very efficiently, easily and quickly, take a copy of a previously prepared "golden" boot disk for one domain and redeploy multiple copies of that image as a pre-installed boot disk for other domains."
I can see clear advantages in using zfs in both the control domain and the guest domain, but what is the downside?
I ends up with a kind of nested zfs where I create a zpool inside a zpool, the first in the control domain and the second inside a guest domain.
How is zfs caching handled, will I end up with a solution with performance problems and a lot of I/O overhead?
    Kindest,
    Tor

I'm not familiar with the Sybase agent code and you are correct, only 15.0.3 seems to be supported. I think we'd need a little more debug information to determine if there was a workaround. May be switching on *.info messages in syslogd.conf might get some more useful hints (no guarantee).
Unfortunately, I can't comment on if, or when, Sybase 15.5.x might be supported.
    Regards,
    Tim

  • (LDOM) The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.

Sorry if this is not the right forum - it seems to be the closest one for things about LDOMs; plese let me know if I should post somewhere else.
I have installed LDoms_Manager-1_2.zip on a T5220 Server; following the book ("Logical Domains 1.2 Administration Guide") I set up the control domain etc, then a guest domain (cranachan) - so far all appears well. I downloaded the dvd iso of Solaris 10 (sol-10-u7-ga-sparc-dvd.iso) and added it to the guest as described, started the domain and issued "boot vdisk_iso:f -v" - this seemed to work well, but there was an error that turned out to be that I had given the wrong path for the system disk.
So I started over - removed the guest domain and the disk definitions for both guest and control domain, and removed the guest; then recreated everything. This time, when I "boot vdisk_iso:f -v" I get:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
Any idea what may have happened? It makes no sense to me; not unless the iso file has been corrupted, but it doesn't seem to have been modified, and I can mount it as a loop-back fs in linux.

I have the same problem with a Netra T1 system. Solaris 10 installed fine and it won't boot. It did have Solaris 8 on the system, but I put in new drives to start my Solaris 10 install.
I tried booting to single user cd-rom (ok boot cdrom -s) and ran this:
    # installboot /usr/platform/SUNW,UltraAX-i2/lib/fs/ufs/bookblk /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s1
    (SUNW,UltraAX-i2 was derived from # uname -i)
    It didn't help.
I also tried "setenv diag-switch? false" at the okay prompt. It didn't help
    Any thoughts?

  • Solaris 10 Memory and Ldoms

    Hi
Got a problem installing in a Guest Ldom on a T5120. I made the DVD ( Solaris 10 5/09 ) avaliable as a virtual disk and booted from it.
I used the same media installing the controller Ldom. Did'nt get any problems with it.
I allocated 512MB Memory to this Guest LDom. Configured 2GB swap during installastion and selected Entire Distribution.
It works when i allocate 1GB Memory to it.
Is 1GB Memory the new requirement for Solaris 10??
Don't want to use 1GB for these Guest Ldoms. Don't have enough memory for that.

My bad. The memory per guest domain is 1GB. Se the Section 1 (NEW) - Hardware http://wikis.sun.com/display/SolarisLogicalDomains/LDoms%20Community%20Cookbook

  • Installed LDOM on solaris 10, Primay domain GUI isn't working.

We have a SUN T2000 server, where we had installed LDOM 1.1 version in the existing Solaris 10 version. We created only one guest domain. When thought, we are all set.. the Primary domain XDMCP remote logins

This problem occured soon after the LDOM 1.1 installation, prior to the LDOM installation, GUI in the primary domain was working great. I could find a script file LDoms_Manager-1_1\Product\SUNWjass\reloc\SUNWjass\Finish\disable-xdmcp.fin

Please help me to resolve this issue.

  • Upgrading Solaris 10 8/07 to run LDOMs?

I am trying to get to a point where I can create and run logical domains - the HW is a SPARC Enterprise T5220, OS is "Solaris 10 8/07 s10s_u4wos_12b SPARC" - and according to the book ("BEGINNERS GUIDE TO LDOMS: UNDERSTANDING AND DEPLOYING LOGICAL DOMAINS for Logical Domains 1.0 release") I need to upgrade to 11/06 and install a number of patches. This is where it gets difficult, to say the least:
    1. When I try to access the patch site and download any patch, I get no further than to click on download, then accept the conditions - and back to the patch search page.
    2. Come to that, it seems to be next to impossible to get any actual information out of this Sunsolve site - I must admit it may be because I normally keep Javascript disabled, but even after allowing sun.com, it still doesn't seem to work as I would have expected for a professionally built support site. Is there something else I need to do, perhaps?
    3. And finally, it may be that what I am trying to do is futile, since I haven't found anything to inicate that I can patch my way up to 11/06; is that something that is possible?

If you have a support contract, you can patch up to something that is functionally equivalent to 11/06 in most respects. But is not officially 11/06.
There may be a few packages missing that represent new software added in the release. But those packages can be added manually if necessary.
Whether or not a patches machine is sufficient for LDOMS, I don;t know since I havent used LDOMS.
However in my experience, very little requires an upgraded machine as opposed to a patched machine.
    So you're probably fine.
But if necessary, you can always do an upgrade install or do a liveupgrade..
The sunsolve site is normally pretty reliable. I don't normally have any problems.

  • Solaris 10 GA and 64 bit Pentium Processor. Device Driver Problem

    We have a Dell Poweredge SC420 with 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 (EMT64)
it also has 300Gb SCSI disk and 2 Gb Ram.
By default this machine tried to boot with the 64 bit kernel then could not load the CADP driver (SCSI CARD). We forced the Kernel to 32 bit by changing the BOOT_FILE from /kernel/AMD64/unix to /kernel/unix.
The machine is now booted but we are having problems with our PCI device. The device is a DMA Bus master and works fine on another SC420 which has a 2.8GHz Non-64 bit processor running the same release of Solaris. The device driver fails in strategy when we try to bind the dma buffer,(ddi_dma_buf_bind_handle) returning DDI_DMA_TOOBIG when the cookie count is > 1.
The machine appears to function apart from our device although we have suffered some kernel panics. We cannot ascertain if other devices are performing DMA successfully but must assume that they are.
Anybody got any ideas, Has anyone else got this processor working?

My bad. The memory per guest domain is 1GB. Se the Section 1 (NEW) - Hardware http://wikis.sun.com/display/SolarisLogicalDomains/LDoms%20Community%20Cookbook

  • LDOMs or Non Global Zones

I am thinking migrating many machines to our yet unused T5-2 boxes.  One of the consultants suggested, using LDOMS. However, there will be at least 4 different Oracle DBs  running in the boxes.  I am not sure which is the best way to go?  Also even after reading the documents, I could not figure out whether you can have LDOMS (VM for Sparc) and Non-Global Zones side by side over Solaris 11.2?  Also, being a 16 core machine, using LDOM, I would lose 2 core I was told.  Views would be helpful for my understanding.

    Hello
I suggest you to read this doc too, there are plenty of way to do a setup with ldoms, and you can achieve a really good redundancy for net and vdisk.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/ovmsparc-best-practices-2334546.pdf
Primary domain can run sol11.2 and guest sol10 without any problem, but the sol10 release has to be supported on that T5.
You can have in sol11.2 NGZ in solaris 10 too.
It is more than VMWare... into any guest ldom running sol11.2, you can have non global zones, for sol10, sol11.2 and kz-zones.  You can assign HW to each domain if you want dynameically, cpu, mem, disks .. all is explained in the admin manual  http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E38405_01/html/E38406/index.html

There are a number of issues with network booting in LDOM 1.0.2, I think they affect all versions of the LDOM software though. If you add a vnet to a guest domain and then try and jumpstart a guest domain from time to time immediately after the guest domain does the RARP request it hangs. Just sending a break to the guest domain, going back to the ok prompt and starting the boot net - install again generally fixes it.
Also there are some gotcha's with LDOM's that affect jumpstart.
    1) If you chose option a) harden the OS using JASS when doing the installation of the LDOM software and you have the jumpstart server on the control domain then it isn't going to work. JASS turns off things like rpcbind which will prevent jumpstart from working. The same problem affects network booting. You would think that running a jass-execute -u to undo the hardening of the o/s in the control domain would work but it doesn't and you have to start over with a fresh solaris image for the control domain. This only applies if you have your jumpstart server on your control domain.
    2) Since jumpstart relies on the MAC of the client to function and since with LDOM's the MAC is dynamically assigned from a pool of address's you can end up with the wrong entry in /etc/ethers on your jumpstart server. That is worth checking.
    3) Since the MAC of the virtual network device isn't the same as the MAC shown when you run banner at the ok prompt in the guest domain you can end up with the wrong entry in /etc/ethers. Either do a boot net (vnet1 whatever) and then make a note of the MAC its broadcasting or do an ldm list-bindings domainname for the guest you want to network boot and copy and paste the MAC of the virtual network you are going to be booting from.
All the regular gotcha's with net boot and jumpstart still apply with LDOM's but so do all the usual fixes. Use of snoop will allow you do debug most problems. Also using show-nets at the ok prompt in the guest domain and make sure that you have the right number of virtual networks.
    Paul.
