Library items and templates

i have created a template and on the side i have a list of
links that i change regularly (not in editable region). I dont want
to upload all my files everytime i change a link in the list, so i
thought a library item would be the go. However, when i update the
file it changes the template and it updates every file, that means
i have to upload all files. My question is, should i put the
library item in an editable region on its own, or what.
thanks

Whether you use a Library item or just a Template for this
will not affect
the workflow of -
1. Make a change
2. Upload all changed pages
What you would want to use if you don't want to have to do
that would be a
server-side include (SSI) (use DW's F1 help to read about
them). In this
case, your navigation would be in the SSI fragment file,
which would be
either in an editable or a non-editable region of the
template (use the
editable region approach in the event that you might want to
have different
navigation elements on different pages, and the non-editable
region approach
if you will not have different navigation elements). Then,
when you might
want to change navigation, just make the change to the
fragment file, upload
it, and magically all pages reflect the change.
When you use server-side includes, there are at least two
files involved:
1. The parent file
2. The include file
The parent file (the one RECEIVING the included file's code)
must be named
with a file extension that triggers a server parse to find
the include
directives (e.g., *.shtm(l), *.asp, *.php, etc.). Of course,
the extension
would have to match the server models supported by a) your
site definition,
and b) the hosting server. The include file (the code
fragment file) may be
named with any extension you desire (we joke here about
naming them with the
'monkeybutt' extension, since that extension name is
irrelevant to the
function of the file itself). HOWEVER, if the include file is
named with an
extension that DW doesn't recognize, then you will not get a
Design view
option when the file is opened.
For this reason, it's best to just name your include files
with the *.htm(l)
extension. Alternatively, if you *really* like
'*.monkeybutt', you can add
this extension to the list of file extensions that DW
recognizes -

  • Dreamweaver Stopped asking if I want to update Library Items and Templates

    Hi All,
Using dreamweaver on a new project.  Set up my Templates and library items and everything was fine - when I changed one a saved it a dialogue popped up and asked me if I wanted to update files.  Suddenly the dialog box has stopped appearing and now I have to instigate it manually by going to modify->templates->update pages which is annoying and more time consuming.
Why has the automatic dialogue disappeared and how do i get it back?
    Thanks

Sorry for the late reply.  I'm still having the problem and appreciate the help.  Attached is the requested screen shot.  Everything is in order I think.  Its a big site though and the whole thing won't fit in one screen shot.  What are you looking for specifically?

  • Using library items in templates

I'm trying to use library items in a template but Dreamweaver

extra closing tags. Is there some trick to using them?

Why are you using Library items in a template?
Can you show me the Library item, and an example of the extra
    closing tags?

  • Error message with library item in template

I'm not sure if this is a PM issue or a DWCS3 issue. The only
way to find out is to ask.
I have gone through the process of creating a a library item
    of a
PopMagic menu according the the video provided by P7. Works
    well.
Then I added the library item to an existing DWCS3 template
    and saved
it. When I attempt to create "new from template" page from
    the template
menu, I get this error message
    http://www.jdcdemo.com/blf/error.html
If I do the same with a template without the menu, the
    error message goes away.
If I create a page with from a template where I've left an
    editable
region for the menu and then insert the menu and save the
    page, I also
get the error message, but the page seems to work ok.
Since I can't create a new page with the template, I opened
it and saved it as a page:
    http://www.jdcdemo.com/baim/BLF8/error-message.html
What is going on here and is there a fix?
    Thanks,
    Joe

Look at your code. Count <body> tags. How many do you
    get? Yeah - that's
wrong. You didn't follow the video....

  • Changed a Library Item and now my CSS no longer works!

I am so frustrated I am almost in tears.  I created a menu in a roughly 7 page website and used DW Library menu to put it on additional pages.  Everything was working fine and then I changed a path to one of my links and hit the button to update the rest of the pages and that's when it happend.  My CSS was gone, no longer applying to any of my menus.  I created an additional CSS sheet just to style my menu and it worked fine up until I changed a frickin link to one my menu icons.  Now my CSS sheets won't apply at all.  I have no idea what has happened and why me changing the path of a link would void out my styles.  Has anyone else had this happen?  Suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I don't want to rub salt into your wounds here, but why are you using Library Items for menus?   That's what DW Templates are for.
    http://www.smartwebby.com/web_site_design/dreamweaver_template.asp#1
    Or better still, Server-Side Includes.
    http://www.smartwebby.com/web_site_design/server_side_includes.asp
Shortcomings of Library Items: they cannot be inserted into the <head> tags of documents. Nor can they contain code that belongs in the <head> tags.  Library items can only be inserted into the <body> tags.
My advice is to run your code through the online validation tools below and fix reported errors.
    HTML - http://validator.w3.org/
    CSS - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
If you can't solve the problem yourself, upload page(s) and supporting files to a public web space you control and post the URL here.

  • Flash Pro CC to CS6 fla issue - Bad library items and new library items with unicode names

I've noticed a strange issue when opening fla files in Flash Pro CS6 that have been edited in Flash Pro CC. If there are library items in the fla with names that include symbols such as ">" or ".", unicode named symbols are created and the original symobls are unuseable. There are many symbols that cause the issue and the symbols just have to be a part of the name.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Create an fla file in Flash Pro CC.
    2) Add a single movieclip to the library with a symbol name of ">".
    3) Save the file.
    4) Open the file in Flash Pro CS6.
    Results:
Library contains 2 symbols, one named ">" and one named "&#062".
    Expected:
There's one library symbol named ">".
After that double clicking the symbol named ">" will do nothing and instances of the symbol will have all their content removed.
This issue is breaking a JSFL script I wrote that loops the library items. When the script attempts to access item.layerCount the script errors out. My team is blocked from using Flash Pro CC in combination with Flash Pro CS6 because of this issue. The only good solution I can think of is to all switch to CC at the same time to avoid converting our fla files to CS6 from CC.
Any info on a fix for this issue would be appreciated.

The dialog you get when you open the FLA in CS6 is that new features may not be available in CS6 so you should save it to a new file to avoid corruption. There's no "save down" from CC to CS6 (yet). So opening the file in CS6 isn't advisable in the first place.
That said, library items are supported between them both so to your point, yes, I get the same exact behavior. A single symbol named ">" in CC produces 2 library items in CS6 named ">" and "&#062", and the original item is lost. Although I'm not sure where I'd classify this issue being you shouldn't be opening a newer version file from an older version of the application. I did also try XFL, same issue. If they decide to create a save-down to CS6 and this still exists, I'd consider it a bug.
As for a fix, I think about the only thing that comes to mind is identify the characters causing issues and run a JSFL in CC to rename the library item temporarily to something you know will work fine. Then once back in CS6, run the JSFL opposite to convert them back to what you want. e.g. "this > that" to "this XYZ that" in CC, then "this XYZ that" to "this > that" in CS6. Shouldn't be too hard to map as long as the replacement is unique.

  • How to restore the link between on screen library item and audio file?

Do you have a BORKEN LINKS problem?
I'd like to share a useful discovery.
I have read a number of posts both here and other forums concerning 'broken links' problem after moving iTunes music folder to an external drive.
ie. In the iTunes window you see a long list of playlists on the left (blue tinted) column and song names and details in the other columns but when you try to play a song a message tells you the link is broken and ! appears to the left of song name.
Broken links can easily be restored if you use SMART PLAYLISTS.
Note: I'm not sure about manually created playlists, so take care.
How to repair the broken links:
    Step one:
Make a back up copy of 2 important files,
the current iTunes library and iTunes Music Library.xml files
place copies somewhere away from the iTunes folder.
    Preparation:
first go to iTunes Preferences and in the advanced settings page, uncheck the two boxes, Keep iTunes Music folder organsied : and Copy files to files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library.
Method A. only some links broken.
Within iTunes highlight each of your playlists in turn**, highlight all the songs listed and hit the delete key on the keypad. Don't worry all the category info will not be lost, keep the playlist window open so you can monitor the link repair progress.
In the FILE menu, click on 'add to library', and select the artist folder containing the songs you just deleted. Click on the choose button, and soon all the songs will appear once more in the song list window complete with all associated info that you have previously added like genre, comments, grouping.
    Method B. all links broken.
If your entire song list has broken links like mine did (ie when you try to play the song a ! appears to the left of song name, restoring the entire list is easy, having made the settings mentioned above, click on 'add to library' then select the iTunes Music folder itself, in a short time all the songs will appear on screen as before you deleted them with links restored.
    NOTE
**For this reason it is a good idea to create a smart playlist corresponding to every Artist folder that appears in Finder, this greatly facilitates any future repairs of broken links in batches. In fact there is an advantage in making all the playlists of the 'Smart' type and taking the time to fill in fields like Genre, Comments, and Grouping as this information allows the application to place every song into at least one category which can be named when setting up the smart playlist.

  • Libraries and templates

i'm implementing libraries and templates in my website for
the first time; i have a series of library files - menubar, footer,
etc - imbedded in the master template. the problem is with updating
library files: when i update one of the library files, i have to
reload every webpage that references the file using my third party
ftp. i thought that the library files would eliminate this process.
is this a way to make the updating process more efficient?
i previously used a javascript reference and did not have
this problem. although i rather not, i'm considering going back to
    the old system.

    > i thought that the library files would eliminate this

Definitely not. Library items, and Templates for that matter,
    are
Design-time tools - this means that they only work inside of
    DW and only
    affect local files.
If you want a more flexible method that can be used remotely,
    use
    Server-side includes.

  • Template Expressions in Library Items?

    Hi All,
The quick question is this: can template expressions be made
    to work inside library items?
    Here’s the situation…
    The page:
    http://www.fretbank.com/basics/intervals/index.html
    I have a 3-tier template structure in place – 1-Root,
    2-General Page Structure, 3-Topic Categories.
If you look at the page, I have buttons below the header that
point to different topics. Each topic has several pages. All of the
pages from each topic are child-pages from a specific Tier-3
    template.
The buttons use template parameters/expressions on the Tier 3
temp. to determine the state of the button.
I currently have to copy the code for the button nav into
each topics template and any changes have to be made in each
template. I am going to be adding many more topics and want to find
a shortcut. I guess I could make a 4th template tier and have each
of the category templates be children of that, but I’m hoping
to avoid this. It would be easiest to be able to make a library
item and paste it where I need.
I thought about using SSI’s but that wouldn’t
work with the expressions. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Troy
here's the code if it helps:

    > Is having the link outside the div a problem in older
    browsers?
It's invalid HTML. That's enough for me. And I suspect it
    would be a
problem somewhere, as you are trying to make the entire
    <div> tag a link.
    > This allows me to only have to change each of these nav.
    elements on one
    > page.
I would opt for a single template structured so that changes
    to CSS could
'specify' the particular section layout. Then I would choose
    server-side
includes for the navigation elements, and place them into
    strategically
placed editable regions of the single template, depending on
    which section
    you are needing to navigate.
Having only a single template is not only possible, it's MUCH
    simpler than
    nesting them.

  • Page persistence indicator and Library item

What is the best way to create page persistence indicators on
    a
navigational array using div elements, in which the nav array
    is stored
as a Library item and stretches across multiple Templates?
I am trying to follow the instructions as in this article:
    http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=F1394
However, this method uses template parameters wherein the
    navigational
array is stored in the .DWT template file, and not in a
    Library item
which stretches across Templates as in my situation. I am
    looking for a
solution which will allow the Library to dynamically create
    the
    persistence indicators.
Oh, and also the nav array is made up of graphical elements
    (not
text-based CSS) so the persistence needs to swap out
    individual
    graphical elements for each div.
    Thanks, -CC

Yes, this is exactly what I'm trying to say.
When I do a five page static site for a client who I know is
    probably
going to make changes to universal elements once every year
    (if that) it
really doesn't matter if I choose Library or SSI. Often I
    will choose
Library items in this case, simply because they're easy to do
    and I'm
used to doing things this way. And when I do have updates to
    make?
Dreamweaver makes it a snap to update those Library items,
    then compare
the changed files on the server. It can all be done in under
    a minute.
SSI? Could have used that, too, but to preview the site I
    either have to
set up a testing server environment or make the include live
    before
showing the client. And I can't drag and drop the file from
    the desktop
onto my browser, have to go through Dreamweaver. These may
    not seem like
big deals (and may seem inefficient to some) but I manage
    between 15-20
sites all through Dreamweaver, some requiring extensive
    updates, many
requiring only a few tweaks quarterly, and I can tell you
    that on the
sites I've built Libraries around, they take me maybe a few
    additional
minutes longer to update than with the sites I've built with
    SSI. It's
all about which sites make the most sense to build SSI or
    Libraries around.
Of course the argument has been made: why not plan better in
    advance to
use SSI in the first place when it may save you time in the
    future? Good
point. However, again, the sites I choose to use Library
    items versus
SSI were usually smaller sites, with no dynamic pages, etc.
    And for
whatever reason I chose not to rename all my extensions to
    SHTML ...
didn't want to jump through hoops setting up a testing server
environment ... or upload everything to FTP everytime I
    changed the
include file just to preview the one pixel move I made on a
    photo ...
and the client may see the include file live on his server
    before I am
ready to demo the whole site, which is on version 4 at this
    point ...
and now I have to change the path of the include on the
    Template to a
new one so he doesn't see parts of version 3 ... and I don't
    want to go
back to my client and ask for additional hours to call the
    client's
dumb-*** hosting company to set up SSI that should already be
    setup ...
don't have time to wait three hours for the webhosting
    company to get
back to me with a "we're working on it" response ... and
    we're already
overbudget due to that fancy CSS menu I already spent way too
    much time
on and isn't looking quite right in IE6 still ... and I've
    got to get
going on four other website updates before 6 PM ... it's now
    5 PM ...
and I'm probably going to be up all night again.
Given all of that, I can't see why there appear to be so many
    Library
hating comments on this thread. Reading through, it would
    appear that
Library items are utterly useless -- which is just not the
    case. I'm
surprised at the comments, actually, because the power in
    Dreamweaver
lies in its ability to make the business of building websites
    easier for
users with a wide range of skill levels, for almost any kind
    of job.
Some of its tools (like Libraries) have overlap with SSI
    perhaps to give
the user as many options as possible depending on
    circumstance. Whether
one chooses to use Library items or SSI, the results are
    often the same
in my experience, and I feel Libraries have even saved me
    time in
situations where includes were simply not the wisest choice.
    Who knows,
maybe it's because I've grown so used to them over the years
    is why I
defend them so. But any rate, Libraries at least serve some
    of us well.

  • How to use a Spry Menu as a Library item?

Okay, this is my second post; but, with a different title.
I made a Spry menu for my Home Page. I saved it and a logo
together as a library item and placed the library item on a second
page. The links in the menu work when there is no style sheet
attached for the Spry meny and the menu appears just as text; but,
as soon as the .css style sheet for the menu is attached to the
second page, the menu appears correct except the drop down menus do
not work. I tried adding a link to the Spry Java Script file as it
is on the home page; still no luck.
I tried the same with a test file, which I have since
removed, stored at the same folder as the home page; same problem.
How are we suposed to make a workable library item with a
Spry Menu? Surely this is possible, no?
Here are the two pages I am referring to:
    Good Page:
    http://iculver.com/
    Bad Page:
    http://iculver.com/pages/AboutUs/Personal_info.html

Apologies - my mistake. You are correct, and my instructions
    were
incomplete. That other bit is required too.

The comments 'hide' the scripting from validators and older
    browsers, but
it's still recognized as javascript, since the comments occur
    INSIDE a
    <script> tag.
    > these Spry Menus in Libraries easier to use...)
It's not so hard once you get all the pieces together.
    1. Create the library item as described.
    2. Make sure that each page that is to carry this library
    item has the
required links in the head (to the CSS and the js files), AND
    in the body.
Why not use a template instead? That way, all of these links
    are managed
    for you.

  • DW won't let me change a library item "change will be discarded"

I built a site and I have library items for my logo and
navigation and some thumbnails. I want to use a different file/lbi
file for my header. When I delete the current library item and try
to put a new one in, I get this message: "making this change would
require changing code that is locked by a template or translator.
The change will be discarded." I honestly don't know what to do; I
really need to specify a different file for my header but it won't
let me, and I have over 100 pages and I made all thumbnails,
rollovers, and all links manually and the file that it's using
isn't working right. I just want to put the correct one in there; I
don't know how I can possibly build my site completely from scratch
    - what can I do?
This is a related issue, but I'm not sure how: I have two
library items named the same thing in two different folders; some
files refer to one, some to the other, but I want them all to refer
to the correct one; I can't make change since I get that error
message. I'm confused about which file is which, I'd deleted one
before, then restored it...thank you so much for any help. I'm
trying to build my portfolio site for an art exhibition...

Happily. One of the pages of the site I'm having problems
    with is
    http://www.hopeedwards.com/TEST_new_website/Hope_website/assorted_art.htm
I also attached code for it. [note: the home/index page only
works in Firefox but the other tabs work in IE and Safari. Also,
everything is shoved down wrong in IE and it only looks right in
Firefox] I am running Adobe CS3 on an Intel based Mac Pro with
Tiger OSX 10.4. I'm having trouble with a couple library items. The
very top library item is logo_and_navigation.lbi - all was okay
with it except I somehow had a couple different copies of it in my
Library folder, so I moved one of them to a folder within the site
called "Trashes". Then I deleted that one because I didn't want two
copies and the logo and nav disappeared on some pages that used
that one. I reinstated it in the trashes folder. The pages that use
that located in the Trashes folder are the index, Assorted Art, and
Commercial Work. The ones that use the one in the Library folder
are Clue Series and About & Contact.
I would like them all to use just one file so I only have to
edit one file if I make changes. I've tried several things: I've
tried selecting and deleting the item in the documents and
inserting the proper copy. It won't let me. I get the message
"making this change would require changing code that is locked by a
template or translator. The change will be discarded." I've tried
doing a Find and Replace and replacing the word Trashes with
Library to specify the correct folder info but that doesn't work,
probably because it can't change code in the library item.
I had a similar problem with the thumbnails library items
when I tried to build my other pages doing a File Save As from the
first one I built in Assorted Art. When I tried to create a
Commercial Work page from it, I deleted the thumbnails library item
because it was the Assorted Art thumbnails. When I tried to insert
the Commercial Work thumbnails library item I got that error
message. It was so frustrating; I had to go in and build the
Commercial Work page from scratch. I had to do that with each
different tab. It just doesn't seem right that you can't swap out
    library items.
Anyway, I'd completely appreciate any help or feedback! I
    really would!
    Hope

  • Changing behaviors on library items

I currently have a header as a library item. The buttons all
have pop-up menus and I am trying to edit them. I used the help
through Dreamweaver and it said to open a page that contains the
library item and detach it - make the changes then re-save the
library sections. I tried that and when I click on the "Shoe Pop-up
Menu" on the behavior tab I get the following error message:
While executing inspectBehavior in Show Pop-up Menu.htm, the
    followinf JavaScript error(s) occurred:
    At line 492 of file "C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver
    8\Configuration\Behaviors\Actions\Show Pop-up Menu.js"; TypeError :
    T.update is not a function
Can anyone help with this? What does it mean?

A well-formed library item cannot have a behavior *in* it. It
    can reference
a behavior with a call to it, e.g.,
    <a onClick="MM_swapImage....
but it cannot actually CONTAIN a behavior. Why? Because that
    would mean
that it would have to have <html>, <head>, and
    <body> tags and Library items
just cannot contain those. Why? Because since a Library item
    is inserted
into another page, if it contained those tags, they would
    then be duplicated
    on the other page.
So - your Library item is not well formed, i.e., it's broken.
    > buttons all have pop-up menus
    > and I am trying to edit them.
This is the worst possible situation. You have a broken
    Library item, and it
contains an even more broken menu system. Is it too late to
    reconsider
    here?

  • I can't fix library item

    InDesign CS6 newbie here.
I converted some Quark library items to InDesign. I've experienced the issue below on three different library items.
Each of these library items is a word or words with a 3-pt rule above and a .25-pt rule below. They were originally built with the font Arial Black OTF and included a style called Head Rules AB (for Arial Black).
When our newspaper converted from Quark 7.5 to InDesign CS6 we reorganized our fonts and, for no special reason, decided to go with Arial Black True Type.
Of course, when we first used these library items they showed up with missing fonts. My first attempt at a fix involved just changing the font in the library item and resaving it. Didn't work. Still showed up as missing.
I then did more exploration and thought the font was missing because the OTF font was assigned to the Head Rules AB style sheet. I fixed the style sheet and assigned to all of our page templates.
The library item still showed up with a missing font. I then checked our Character styles and noticed all the Arial Black-related styles had the wrong Arial Black font. I corrected that issue and rebuilt one of the library items from scratch. When I pull it onto a page it still shows up as the wrong Arial Black font.
Obviously there is something here I don't understand. If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks.
