Library upgade failure

I recently migrated my user account via TimeMachine from a 2008 iMac to a new MacBook Pro. Despite the Pictures folder including my iPhotoLibrary of some 65GB incl thousands of photos and videos, iPhoto(version9.5.1) consistently opens it as an empty library showing no pictures etc. I have Library Upgrader as an expensive consultant previously used it to successfully upgrade my wife's iPhotoLibrary in a separate user account. When I run Library Upgrader it tells me "your library can open with the current version and does not need to be prepared with this tool!". I tried renaming my iPhotoLibrary in case iPhoto was picking up some other empty library. However iPhoto seems definitely to be opening the correct library but finding no photos! HELP

It sounds like the library is damaged.
If you have access to the old machine, try copy it over again.
If not:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Network Library partial failure

I have a Tiger Server with about a half-dozen clients. I've implemented a Network Library for font sharing, and for a few months it worked great. Now all but two of the clients cannot mount the NL --it appears in the Finder as an alias that can't be resolved. The remaining two clients still mount the NL without problem. There's no rhyme or reason to why this has happened: no server failure, client blow-up, etc. The clients without the NL can still mount the server via AFP.
So far I've tried restarting a client, deleting then creating anew the LDAP link (Directory Access), deleting all client caches, and copying the SystemConfiguration folder from /Library/Preferences on one of the working clients.
I'm not at that network site on a daily basis so I'm hoping for suggestions I can try the next time I'm there.

    Hi;
maybe you have a firewall or any other networking equipment in the middle that would cut a connection that is inactive for too long?
There are some keep alive parameters.

  • Failure to recognize iPhoto library and failure to import same images

Okay so this one is strange. For some time now every time I open iPhoto is has had to rebuild itself. I took this as a bug and let it do it each time.
Now with Photos being on my machine I saw this as an opportunity to see if it fixed the issue with the new app. I opened Photos and asked it to select the MASSIVE iPhoto library I use. It said it can not open that one and failed after several times trying it.
I then took the step of exporting over 10k images and videos into a folder on one of my drives and then reviewing everything within the files to ensure no bad data or 0k files or anything. All looks good. I can however over and open each random file I tested and it looks okay. So the integrity of the images and videos seem okay to me.
I then also reset the permissions on ALL the files to 777 and the folder to ensure that the system could do anything it wants with them.
From here I tried to import them into Photos and instead of the 10,219 I am supposed to see it only imported a little over 3k and then said that the rest were not readable due to bad (or missing) meta data. I downloaded a meta data editor and tried to batch edit something like the date updated or date created to see if re-setting it with batch may update the meta data to a more modern format and allow for importing. That also did not work.
So here I am with no way to get all my content into Photos and not help I can find anywhere online to work around this.
I am almost tempted to run and PS script to open, process and save each file to get it to reset the information for each image. This seems like an extreme step but I am at a loss as to what to do other than have the system see them as totally new files.
This is also NOT ideal as I will loose any meta data I did have like date creation and I will have 10k files that all think they were made today. Manually sorting everything again into albums is also not very exciting to me but without being able to direct open or import the iPhoto library I am not clear what else I can do.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for posting this because it explains a lot to me as a troubleshooter trying to help other people. No one should be using the guest network feature for their own devices. By default, most routers prevent devices on the guest network from accessing devices on the main network for security reasons. Some routers let you disable that security feature but it's a bad idea if you are letting other people use your guest network.
Furthermore, everyone should have WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) disabled in their router if their router supports the "external registrar" authentication method. That's the method where you enter an 8-digit code which is printed on the bottom (or side) of the router into a device you want to add to your network. You can read more about this here:
    http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/723755
To the best of my knowledge, Apple routers are not vulnerable to this exploit because they do not support "external registrar".
The major brand with the worst exposure to this problem is Linksys because WPS currently cannot be disabled in their consumer routers (at the time I'm writing this). The situation should begin to improve in March 2012 as Linksys starts to roll out firmware upgrades for certain models. Here's a link to the Linksys firmware release schedule:

  • Intermittent import library generation failure building 64-bit binary in Visual Studio 2013

I have a 64-bit c++ project that randomly fails to build because the import library generation silently fails in the link step.  I have scoured the "diagnostic level" log trying to find some hint at why the import library
fails to be created, but there doesn't seem to be any information.
It's pretty random.  When it fails, I can do a clean build and everything builds.  After a successful build, I can do another clean rebuild and see it fail again.
The 32-bit version consistently builds fine.  I see the 64-bit problem regularly in any configuration (Release or Debug).
        I'm running VS2013 Update 2 RC.
Any hints on how to debug this?  Is this a known issue for which there is a patch?

Hi Anna, thanks for the reply.  Yes, this does reproduce in MSBuild if you specify a rebuild.  As mentioned previously, if you do a clean and build, even through MSBuild, the build succeeds every time.
There's no way for me to create a sample project.  Our codebase is quite large and this doesn't reproduce for simple example projects.
There is no error message when the iTunes.lib import library fails to build.  The import library is used in a dependent project and that fails in a way you would probably expect (complains about a missing .lib)...

  • HT1926 iTunes installation/run failure due to C runtime library access failure

iTunes update 11.1.4.62 fails when installing/running in Windows 7. System - see C++ Runtime Library error popup, below. I have tried uninstalling iTunes, rebooting, and re-installing with the same results. Any ideas?

I found another discussion that helped me resolve this issue:

  • Library rebuild failure

My problems started with the big grey multi-language box appeared asking to Restart computer appearing a couple of times – kernel panic? I just optimistically carried on. (What happened next may suggest my iPhoto software is damaged and that this resulted in kernel panic?)
Then a message about upgrading thumbnails appeared when opening iPhoto 5.0.4 – I tried both options (Upgrade and Later) but just got the spinning wheel for ages. So I read a previous post here which suggested a Rebuild of iPhoto. I backed up, copying from Pictures folder to Desktop. The Rebuild progress bar appeared briefly, but then disappeared and I was left with ‘No photos’ in iPhoto – so now I have a bigger problem!
What I do not want to do is rebuild the library manually, as I have 4000 photos - many of which are captioned, and a structure of numerous folders and albums, also slideshows – months of work which would be lost! I’m quite distressed about this prospect.
I have Canon’s EOS Viewer Utility 1.1, EOS Capture v1.1 and PhotoStitch 3.1 and Adobe’s Photoshop Elements 2.0 installed – I could uninstall these, in case they’re interfering? I could also download and reinstall iPhoto 5.0.4? The library contained approx 7.5GB of photos – could iPhoto be overloaded? I have 1GB RAM, do I need more? Are iPhoto Library Manager or File Salvage worth downloading?
Does anyone have any comments / ideas, please?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for the tips guys...have done steps 1 to 4 as outlined in the troubleshooting guide by X-Lab which Rick (JMEH) suggested. These included 1.running Apple Hardware Test, 2.checking SMART diagnostics, repairing Startup Disk, repairing Permissions, performing cache cleaning, 3.confirming sufficient RAM and disk space, 4.doing a Safe Mode check on Login/Startup items...everything OK!
Have retrieved a 3.2MB Album.xml file, from the pre-rebuild Library backup I made. Hoping that I could do an iPhoto Rebuild using iPLM on the original library using this Album.xml file. However, I received this message...
"This library cannot be rebuilt. The album data file for this library is malformed. Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header if XML. See iPhoto Library Manager Help for troubleshooting information."
I've recently been using lots of Special Characters for captioning photos using German and French place names - should this be a problem? Sent the .xml to Brian Webster just in case he can decipher a clue in it, cos I can't even open it. So looks like I'm stuck with a manual rebuild and losing months and months of cataloguing work!
Just for reference, here's how events leading to corruption of photos and Album.xml file occured...Monday - mistakenly hit Power button when computer unplugged at wall, flicked mains switch then hit Power button again = first kernel panic and loud fan humming, then downloaded photos OK...Wednesday - edited Last Roll OK, put on Sleep mode, reboot from Sleep = kernel panic, continued editing (the photos which became corrupted), half hour later = 'Upgrade Thumbnails' and hung up, all attempts to Rebuild failed...Saturday - reboot from Sleep mode (not been using iPhoto at all) = kernel panic.
So I'm hoping the kp's are over now. But if I go back to using iPhoto I'm left with no folders, albums, captions or slideshows - and really don't want to risk this scenario again! Suppose I could frequently back up the Album.xml file. Failing that, are there any other, more reliable photo cataloguing/management systems out there? Maybe just organise them in Finder - seems a pity when iPhoto can do some nice stuff and is so easy to use...
Interested to hear any comments on the way forward.

  • Bizarre iTunes Library Consolidation Failure

    This one's got me stumped.
I have my iTunes media files spread across two large hard drives, and I am rapidly running out of room on the second drive because of all of the video that I am adding.
I purchased a 2 terabyte MyBook external drive, and did what I've done many time before - I set up a new iTunes music folder on the big drive, and after the iTunes Library file updated, I selected the Consolidate function and let 'er rip.
Much to my astonishment, the consolidation only transferred the music files that were on one drive, less than half of my podcast files and almost no video files. Since this defeated the point, I recovered the pre-consolidation iTunes Library file via Time Machine, and trashed the new iTunes Music folder in the big drive.
Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do to overcome the issue?

I never got an answer to this question, unfortunately. I ended up retrieving a version of my iTunes library from the Time Machine backup, erasing the consolidated drive and leaving my music where it was. I put my movies onto an external drive, and pointed that drive as my "iTunes Library". I still let iTunes organize my music, because I really can't stand doing it myself.
Here's to hoping that Apple will announce a major upgrade to iTunes at the coming MWE, one that allows users to select different locations for different types of media.

  • Re: Digital Library Login Failure

i am having the same problem that that person had
I ordered a game from Best Buy's website today and got the confirmation e-mail with a link to the digital download library. However, whenever I tried logging in it blocked the entry stating that the e-mail and/or password did not match the records. I have tried altering the password with no effect. I know it is correct because I can login to Best Buy's website with no problem.

    Hello kipp814,
Thank you for purchasing a game from Best Buy.  I am very sorry to hear you've not been able to download it thus far.
I have reviewed your order and everything seems to be processed correctly.  When you attempted the password reset, did you do it from the Digital Library login page, or the www.BestBuy.com one?  If not from the Digital Library, you may wish to try it from there.
Another step that may assist you is to get to the Digital Library through the order page on www.BestBuy.com.  To do this, log into the website, click on "Orders" in the upper right corner.  From there you should be able to find your game order.  Open the order page and you should find a link to the Digital Library.  Click on it and you should get to the download page.
Please try these steps and met me know if you need any additional assistance.
    Thanks again,

  • Network drive library location failure and Syncing problems

I transferred my iTunes library to a wireless network drive. If iTunes opens without an established wireless network connection, it returns to the default library location. I can easily change it back to the network drive, but want to avoid restoring the default location. How can I do this?
A related problem is with syncing my iPod with the new network drive iTunes library location. In short, it won't sync with the new location and asks me to Restore the iPod continuously. The only way to get the iPod to sync is when the library goes back to the default iTunes location (which I don't want because I don't have music there anymore).
    Would love some help.

+If iTunes opens without an established wireless network connection, it returns to the default library location+
That's how it works. There is no way to stop itunes from doing it. If you ever find you've opened itunes without that drive available, immediately close itunes. Use a shift-start to re-open it using the networked ITL file.
Have you tried assigning a different drive letter to the ipod? Maybe it's competing with the networked drive letter. Just go into windows device manager to change the ipod's drive letter.

  • Lost my library, activation failure

Lost about half my ebook library when I installed the first Digital Editions. My Adobe Reader 7.0 still "sees" them but gives me the "you don't own it" message now. The older Digital Editions didn't "see" them.
Updated to 1.5 and picked up two that the older version didn't see but that's it.
Most of the ebooks I can't open are older Amazon downloads but they were downloaded to the same laptop that I'm still using.
Losing half my ebook library is a huge loss for me. I live outside the U.S. and can't find many books in English.
Tried the activation process online and got this error message:
"Client User is not an EasyActivation user and can not be migrated to a full user.
Eden Info: (0X18) Client User is not an EasyActivation user and can not be migrated to a full user.

How do I become a full user? Can I recover my books?

it might be possible to get them back, but it really depends. Please open a Digital Editions 1.5 Technical Support case... please use the contact links at http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions.
when you get a case open report the case number back here and I'll put somebody on it.

  • IPhoto library open failure?

    Problem opening iPhoto?

    Problem answering question?
If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos" means the helper is just guessing. More information means you get better assistance.

  • Restoring play count from library.xml?

OK, i just reformatted my hard drive, and not sure i backed up everything correctly. All my music is there, but there is no play count/date added/playlists. I am ok with this, but i opened the iTunes Music Library xml file just for fun, and i noticed in the xml the playcount integer was there along with the date added. Is there a way to "import" this xml file so the playcounts show up? date added etc?Its more just for fun, but itd be nice to have. Playlists would be a bonus too, but not critical. I didtn think any of this was possible until i saw this xml file...
    Thanks!

    GARTH,
While I understand your perceived need for this attribute, I have not seen a method to recover the 'Date Added' value. Perhaps there is a JavaScript available from another. If I happen across this facility, I'll include it in my recovery instructions, but I do not go looking for something not critically required (see my reason below).
This begs the question of many Library problems I see here: If your music Library is so important to you (and why shouldn't it be), you need to proactively guard against the typical and expected failures of digital life.
This means *+frequent and complete backups+* of your data - including your entire iTunes Library. Failure to plan means you are planning to fail.
See what you need to do to Completely Backup iTunes.
Do anything less and we'll try to help you recover, but one cannot expect Apple or those of us here to save you from every self-inflicted problem. We do, however, get many of them happily resolved.
    Best of Luck

    wadm> enable-ciphers config=cfg-valid http-listener=test-valid-listener --cipher-type=ssl3tls SSL_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_MD5 SSL_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA SSL_RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA SSL_RSA_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA SSL_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_RC4_40_MD5 SSL_RSA_EXPORT_WITH_RC2_CBC_40_MD5 SSL_RSA_WITH_NULL_MD5 SSL_RSA_WITH_NULL_SHA SSL_RSA_FIPS_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA SSL_RSA_FIPS_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDH_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDH_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA TLS_ECDH_RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDH_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA TLS_RSA_EXPORT1024_WITH_DES_CBC_SHA TLS_RSA_EXPORT1024_WITH_RC4_56_SHA TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_NULL_SHA TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_NULL_SHA TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA
    CLI201 Command 'enable-ciphers' ran successfully
    wadm> deploy-config --restart cfg-valid
    CLI201 Command 'deploy-config' ran successfully
    wadm> list-ciphers config=cfg-valid http-listener=test-valid-listener
    SSL_RC4_128_WITH_MD5
    SSL_RC2_128_CBC_WITH_MD5
    SSL_DES_192_EDE3_CBC_WITH_MD5
And any attempt to connect to the server results in failure. The error log says SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance

failure: server initialization failedThis means that it expects a 32-bit library but it found a 64-bit one.
