License Question for SharePoint Foundation 2010

I have a question as it regards to the user agreement for SharePoint Foundation 2010.
When I deploy code to the front-end of the Foundation service which directly modifies the code on the front-end to make the system do anything different out of the box, does this mean I have violated the code agreement.
For instance, using JQuery to manipulate the look and feel of a form, use third party tools like SPServices, attach SharePoint Designer workflows, modify the server end by using STSADM command line to turn features on and off, create and deploy site
collection features using Visual Studio, or create web parts?
Also, if I am using this software for business purposes of any kind, does it mean I need to purchase the software?
I have received a copy of Share Foundation along with a Server 2008 R2 OS which was purchased.
IF I use Foundation to run my business processes, am I in violation of the user agreement and do I need to purchase SharePoint Server 2010 with CALs?

The official answer: "I'm not a licensing person. Please contact Microsoft."
In general:
Foundation is a "free" download, but can only be installed on Windows Server. You can install Foundation 2010 on Windows 7, but only for testing/development, not as a production server.
Foundation is "free" in that it is licensed as part of the Windows Server it is installed on.
If you have 500 users, then Windows Server will need to be licensed for 500 users. The Windows Server licensing will also depend on if the users are internal or on the internet.
SQL Server: If you are using SQL Express, then no license costs, but the number of SharePoint users may impact the licensing costs of your SQL Server.
The choice between Foundation vs. Standard or Enterprise is the list of features needed and scalability (how many users?).
"JQuery, SPServices, SharePoint Designer workflows, STSADM, Visual Studio..."
None of those will impact your licensing. Anything that you do to directly query or manipulate the SQL tables will impact your support. SharePoint is a platform and you are expected to configure and customize it.

  • Is CAL required for SharePoint Foundation 2010?

Is extra CAL required for uploading/downloading docs using SharePoint Foundation 2010? We already have Licensed Windows Server 2008 R2. Ours is an intranet application which will be accessed by 400 intranet users.
If CAL is required then can i use only 1 CAL for my app server to upload/download docs on SP Foundation provided all 400 client requests will go via app server to SP server?

If I want to use sharepoint foundation 2013, I need to have Windows server 2008 R2 / 2012 license & SQL server license (optional). I'm confused in - what kind of windows server license is required & do I also need some other license to use sharepoint
    foundation?
How can I provide external user access to my sharepoint environment? Is there any requirement of any other license also?

  • Audit Trail Log for Sharepoint Foundation 2010

    Hi all,
Does SharePoint Foundation 2010 have the ability to Audit user actions including opening documents, editing permsions, etc ?
What is the different with audit trail for Sharepoint 2010 and WSS 3.0?
    Thank you
    Rgds,

I agree with Kamil Jurik. There is no auditing feature in SharePoint Foundation edition. The auditing feature is a SharePoint Enterprise feature. But yes there are free utilities on the web, like on codeplex and other. And if you are good in coding then
you may develop your own custom solution as given in a tech article:

  • Support for SharePoint Foundation 2010 on Windows Server 2012 R2

I have located an article that states that SharePoint Server
2010 is supported on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2724471
However, I deal with a large number of farms that are based on Foundation.  Honestly, I interpreted this article to mean both Server and Foundation were supported, but I'm receiving some resistance from consumers because there is no definitive statement
of support from Microsoft re: Foundation and the R2 o/s.
Does anyone know definitively whether foundation 2010 is supported on 2012 R2 or not?  And more importantly, is there some article on the subject I can reference? (I've searched without success).
I suppose the conservative approach would be to assume it is NOT supported unless I can find information to the contrary.

I think there need to be other considerations than "because it sounds good" (which is what the 2012 R2 decision almost sounds like it boils down to). Rather, the consideration should be made of what best supports the application, what version of the OS is
widely used and known, what happens when we encounter new issues due to using a newer OS that is less used with this application?
At least, that would be my argument. Same reason I would not deploy SharePoint 2013 to 2012 R2 when support arrives with SP1 -- 2013 with Server 2012 is a well known combination with many resources available for non-paid support.

  • When building a vacation leave holiday system using SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Designer workflows how can I add half day functionality?

    Hi,
I have built a vacation leave holiday system for SharePoint Foundation 2010 using SharePoint Designer workflows and Javascript. Everything works perfectly but I'm struggling to design a solution for users to specify half day requests that span over dates
greater than 1 day, i.e. my half day solution works but only when the start and end date are the same. How would I change the user interface to allow users to choose which day they want the half day to be requested when the vacation leave holiday request is
    from, say,  6th - 10th Jan 2014?
    Thanks.

    Hi ,
I have a test on my machine with a custom approval workflow and it can work normally .Here are the detailed steps :
    1.
Open the site in SharePoint Designer .Create a workflow to associate with the document library .Set the workflow to start when an item is created and when an item is changed
.Also allow the workflow to start manually .
    2.
Choose ‘Collect Data from a user’ .
    3.
Click on the data and give a name to the Task created .
    4.
Define the custom form field name as ‘Approve ?’ .Set the information type as Choice .
    5.
Set the choices as ‘Approve’ and ’Reject’ .Display as Checkboxes .Uncheck the ‘Allow fill-in values’ and ‘Allow blank values’
    .Click finish to save .
    6.
Click on users and add the users who will approve the documents .
    7.
Keep the output to variable as collect .
    8.
Add a new step .Choose ‘If any value equals value ’ .Set the any value ‘Data source’ as  workflow variables and parameters .Set the ‘Field
from source’ as Variable: collect .
    9.
Set the value behind ‘equals ’ as ‘Approve’ .
    10.
Add a new action ‘Update list item ’ .Set the item as current item .Add the field Approval status as Approved .
    11.
Add an Else-if branch to update the Approval status as Rejected .
    12.
Publish the workflow and test in your site .
    Thanks,

  • How to provide internet access for a site collection in SharePoint Foundation 2010

    Hi all,
I am working on SharePoint Foundation 2010. I have to make a site collection available on internet.
Only one site collection is to be brought on internet rest of the site collections should not be accessible from outside.
How do I achieve this. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
As per my knowledge, you have to create new Web Application for your site to publishing it to internet. Since internet settings can be done at web application so create new one and then backup your existing site and restore in new web app.
You can refer below thread for licensing:

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010 Calendar Questions

We would like to move our equipment resource calendar from Outlook 2010 Meeting Requests to SharePoint calendars if SharePoint Foundation calendars can add additional functionality.
The problem we have had with the standard Outlook meeting request with the equipment added as a resource is that meetings/appointments only give reminder alerts before the meeting starts.  When users have had equipment for long periods of time, sometimes
they forget to return it and it isn't noticed as missing until the next person comes to pick it up a we discover it isn't physically available even through it shows as available in the calendar.
We would like the person reserving equipment to automatically get an additional reminder alert at the end time so they are always reminded to return the equipment.
The only way I can see this done through Outlook is to manually create a second appointment to return equipment at the end of the original meeting.  That is not practical and will not get done.
Can equipment return reminders be automated in SharePoint Foundation 2010?

    Hi ,
Yes, you can create a SharePoint
designer Workflow to send reminder based on the end time. Please refer the below blogs:

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2010 - Searching for a commentBox web part

    Hello!
Im sort of new to Sharepoint and i have been working with it in two weeks now. Im currently an full controll user on the site my company is using and im also using Sharepoint Designer. The site is running on Sharepoint Foundation 2010
I have been digging for sometime after a web part that enables users to leave a message on the home page. I want the same fuction as i get when i create a BlogSite (there you can create posts and comments).
My first thought was to find a Web Part which will allow me to do this, but i was sort of wrong. I found some examples like this: social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/newthread?category=sharepoint&forum=sharepointgeneralprevious
Im still trying to make that work but so far no luck.
So i was wondering if there is a better way to create a function that will allow users to create posts/comments etc?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2010 SP2 or SharePoint Foundation 2013

    Experts,
    I am installing FIM 2010 R2 SP1 on windows 2012.
    FIM Sync installed on server1.
    FIM Service installed on server2.
    Now I have to install:-
    FIM Portal on server3.
With googling I understand that I need SharePoint Foundation 2013 or SharePoint Foundation 2010 SP2.
Can anyone guide what would be the safe approach. I don't have any knowledge of SharePoint.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Mann

Considering you would use it for FIM only, it doesn't really matter which version would you pick.
If you want to implement FIM on Windows Server 2012 (or R2), just make sure that you install correct version of SharePoint (at least 2010 SP2)

  • SharePoint foundation 2010 on Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello,
I have done an in place upgrade of my Windows 2008 R2 enterprise server (running Sharepoint Foundation 2010) to Windows 2012 R2 standard (for license reason). I have applied the latest service pack 2 and hotfix (14.0.7113.5000) to sharepoint . When
I want to open the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell I am getting "The Local farm is not accessible. Cmdlets with FeatureDependencyId are not registered". I have tried different thing (like setting up a config file for powershell to load version 2,
or running PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures ) without success.
I am currently unable to make a backup of the farm.
If someone would have an idea, that would help me a lot.
    Thanks
PS: I am able to open The Sharepoint Central Administration, and the farm is working.

Try this, run cmd.exe "As Administrator".
    powershell -version 2.0
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell
    Does that work?

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010 : Changing language settings

My employer would like to offer our clients the ability to specify a preferred language in-which to use our SharePoint solution.
I.e. Clicking on a national flag on the dashboard will consequently display the system text within the associated language.
Ideally this feature will be bespoke to each given user. I.e. Default language will be English. Each user thereafter will be able to specify their unique user session within their desired language.
Is it possible to configure our solution to offer this feature? If so, how?
We are currently using SharePoint Foundation 2010.
    Many thanks in advance.
    David
    Senninha010

The ability to display prompts in a different language in SharePoint 2013 is called the
Multiple Language User Interface (MUI).  The issue with what you are attempting is not building an interface to enable or disable a specific language in the MUI.  The problem is that the available languages are completely dependent on whether
a SharePoint Language pack for that language has been loaded or not.  If they have been loaded then its just a matter of writing your application to take advantage of Localization support through the use of resource files.  But localizing your application
without loading the SharePoint language pack for that language probably won't work well.  here's a couple articles on the MUI and localization.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010, hotfix install fail "An error occurred while running detection"

    Hi all,
I am having a lot of trouble installing hotfix 2849990 on my server. After running it shows the error "An error occurred while running detection". I tried another hotfix as well but got the same result. I read on the web to do a "repair"

  • Applying theme to all sites in a site collection SharePoint Foundation 2010

I am working in SharePoint Foundation 2010 and want to apply a theme found in my top level site to all the remaining sites in the site collection.  I found the following bit of code on-line and put it in a script:
    function Apply-SPTheme([string]$SiteUrl, [string]$webName, [string]$themeName)
     $site = new-object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSite($SiteUrl)
     $web = $Site.OpenWeb($webName)
     $theme = [Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities.ThmxTheme]::Open($site,"_catatlogs/theme/" + $themeName + ".thmx")
     $theme.ApplyTo($web,$false)
     $web.Update()
     $web.Dispose()
     $site.Dispose()
    Apply-SPTheme "https://sitename" "" "themeName"
I call the function in the last line and the web site where I obtained the code indicated that this would put the theme in all other sites.  When I run the script I get the follwing message:
    You cannot call a method on a null-valued expression. At C:\applyTheme.ps1(the script file):6 char:16
    $theme.ApplyTo <<<< <$web,$false>
    +CategoryInfo: InvalidOperation: (ApplyTo:String) [], RuntimeException
    +FullyQualifiedErrorId:InvokeMethodOnNull
I'm a novice programmer and particularly novice on Powershell. I'm not sure I understand what the problem is or how to fix it.
    I'd appreciate any help.

I highly recommend going back to the SharePoint 2010 site and going through all of the fundamentals.  If yo allocate an hour a day you should be caught up in two weeks.  This will save you hundreds of hours of fishing for solutions.
SharePoint is far too complex to be "guessed" at.  You will never guess at its structure. Going through the basics from the ground up will burn the structure of its design into you head.  You will then be able to find answers quickly because you
will know the documentation and how to ask the questions.
If you are only a basic Admin then your company should allow the vendor to either do the configurations or pay for you to be trained or compensate you to use your personal time for training.  It would be a win for them.
There are many very good books on SharePoint and PowerShell.  They are only good if you already have the basics of both.  One that I acquired recently is quite good at you level of involvement as it is a cookbook of solutions in PowerShell for
normal configuration and administration items that goes beyond what is available on the web site or in the basic training.

I actually have the 2013 version but you should stick to the 2010 version until you are up to speed.  I bought 2013 as a catch up.  Read it over two long dinners of
    Sushi and Sake.
The books run the gamut of SP from planning to admin.  They are not technical manuals and not developer books.  They are written for general administration,  You will read through quickly and then refer back to chapters as needed.  As
your SP site evolves the book will help you evolve with it.
Start by becoming extremely familiar with all of the resources on the SharePoint 2010 product site.  Post future requests that are SharePoint related to the SP forums.  They are very good with PowerShell at this time (three versions but they seem
to have caught up) - They know the product better than most here and are closer to the MS MVPs on SharePoint.  If there is a pure PowerShell issue then the people in this forum can very helpful,
Here are all of the SharePoint forums:
