Light leakage question: any replacement iPad 2s ok?

Seems to me that everybody writing about getting replacements is saying the replacements they received are as bad or worse. Just wondering if anybody at all has received a replacement that has been okay.

My co-worker took his back twice and both of his replacements still had bleeding. At least his 3rd iteration had less bleeding than his original.
To be objective, the bleeding doesn't make the device unusable. My co-workers may not have noticed their bleeding if I didn't ask to compare my iPad 2 to theirs.
We have taken differing strategies. I've returned mine, but he is being persistent and I'm sure to the dismay of his nearest Apple store, checking in just about every week to try to swap his out until he gets an acceptable device.
I on the other hand, chose to just return mine.
It's amazing how many jump to defend Apple, proclaim those who do have iPad 2s "lucky" to even have been able to purchase one and be thankful for it, or that they are being nit picky.
I'll concede a little bit to being nit picky. But Apple themselves have built their reputation for not only beautiful industrial design, but also for their build quality. The prices of their devices are supposed to reflect this quality.
When I shell out $911 for a device, I think I'm in the right to be nit picky. My iPad 1st gen had absolutely no bleed issues whatsoever and was a joy to use.
I also noticed my screen bleed immediately in normal office lighting, so I wasn't just reacting to news blogs or 2nd hand information. I use the iPad primarily for video, and can honestly say the screen bleed is distracting.
Sure, it wouldn't kill me... but for $911 I could buy a 40" LCD TV without any bleeding, but then again.. I wouldn't buy a TV with screen bleeding in the first place.
Apple may or may not fix this screen bleed issue. Maybe they'll give a bumper that clamps down on the screen to help alleviate the issue. If the problem bothers you as much as it did me, the power is truly in your hands.
Return the device if the bleeding has made you so unhappy and the device is unacceptable for use. That was the decision I made. If the bleeding is corrected in later models, decide then if you want to buy it.
You can also decide to keep yours and hope that your Apple store staff is of the more understanding sort (which just about all Apple staff in the Bay Area are), and will swap your device, send it out for repair, or swap it with a fixed refurb. (Some have warned that after the initial 14 days you may not be eligible for a replacement for a brand-new device.) That may or may not be true.. but that shouldn't really be an issue if this problem bugs you enough to want a replacement in the first place.

  • Light leakage question, need help...

I bought an iPad 4th Generation 3 weeks ago an it was fine or maybe I don't see any defects before... Then yesterday I started to notice the light leakage in several spot like on the left side of the screen and on the corner near the speaker... Is it fine or should I be worried about this?
Would there be issues like this in iPad air? I'm planning to get a new one for my father next month.
I am not thinking about getting it exchanged and just preferred to do something that might fix this issue myself since I bought it in macstudio store in Kuala Lumpur and now I'm staying in Yogyakarta (Indonesia).

Are you scanning as jpeg, tiff or some other format?
Are you using continuous numbering for files names as by definition scanned files have no exif data.

  • URGENT QUESTION/TOPIC ABOUT LIGHT LEAKAGE

okay, so after attempting to fix my light leakage on the side of the 3rd iphone I've had so far (because it's around an hour travel time to my "local" apple store), I noticed something odd. There is light spots visible on the BACK of the iPhone!! Yes, through the plastic. I was looking at pictures of the disassembled iPhone, and it's almost like someone forgot to put that black tape against the sides of the LCD/glass screen component. Does anyone else have this problem??
Go into a dark room, turn brightness all the way up, turn the phone around and place your hand against the screen of the iPhone to make it easier to view... The light should be visible through the Black (or white I assume) plastic near the left and right edges (kind of on the same line as the ringer volume adjust and silence switch.
Any comments would be appreciated as I need to get this phone replaced (if it needs to be) asap because I have to go back to college soon and there isn't an Apple store around for miles...
    thanks guys!
PS: I'll try to post pics later

    lol funny ...
i have had the same problem with 2 units in Canada.
    UNACCEPTABLE.
I think apple forgot the quality control aspect of the making of the phone. Simple thing to do is return it. I returned both units. Apple needs to do a better job in ensuring this doesnt happen. Its an obivious problem and when you are forced to join a 2 to 3 yr term you expect to pay for what you get. I guess when Apple brought the phone down to 199$ the quality went right down. I'm on my 5th unit.
Best of luck ... I would exchange it!

  • Is the iPad 2 covered by an International Warrenty Re: light leakage

My brother in-law returned from the USA at the weekend from business and bought me an iPad 2 back from the Las Vegas Apple Store, as I had asked him to. I'm experiencing the light leakage along with the video camera shooting weird colours.
My question is, am I able to visit a UK Apple Store to hopefully exchange/resolve the problems with my 32GB WiFi iPad purchased from the USA.
He has given me his receipt too.

Yes, your apple warranty should cover you irrespectively. I bought my MBP at the Apple Store in NY and have had it fixed a couple of times under warranty via my local Apple store in the UK.

  • I could plug in a jack connected to a receiver and listen to Pandora on outdoor speakers. Suddenly it stopped working; my iPhone works fine plugged in to the jack. I rec'd a replacement iPad which won't play using the jack. Any clue?

Any idea on how to get the jack to work in the iPad? As I indicated in my question, the jack is connected to a receiver which is connected to outdoor speakers. The iPad worked well, allowing me to listen to Padora through the receiver. Suddenly the connection stopped working even though it works when plugged into my iPhone. I contacted Apple support who ended up sending me a replacement iPad. The jack does not work with the replacement iPad either! It still works with my iPhone. I am hoping someone "out there" can provide some insight that will get it all to work again. Thanks.

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • Visible light leakage on ipad 3, very annoying

Just received my new ipad (32G wifi, black).   After turning it on for the first time I noticed a visible light leakage at the top edge of the screen, it is at least one inch long and very annoying indeed!  I've googled this issue and found that there are some others complaining about the same thing, while one guy mentioned that, for his device 'the leakage disappeared after 2 hours of use'.   well, I've been using it for at least 3 hours and it doesn't seem to get even a little bit better.  I'm quite disappointed as my ipad 2 has no such issue at all, not to mention that the new ipad seems to generate more heat, makes it uncomfortable to hold it like a book.  I'm bringing it to my local store tmr, hopefully they can do sth about it.

I have this issue as well.  I can see the backlight on the top left of the IPAD when held in portrait mode. To the left of the front facing camera. Can only be seen if you tilt the ipad almost horizontally.  It doesn't appear to effect the screen quality so I’m not in a hurry to replace it. Maybe I’ll bring it in later before the warranty expires since it is actually a defect that should be covered.

  • Is light leakage/dead pixels considered DOA (dead on arrival?)

I have my Ipad 2 engraved, and I just realized I could not return it for a refund or exchange unless it's a DOA (dead on arrival) as mentioned on http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespolicies.html#topic-21:
"Personalized iPods (e.g., engraved or customized in any way) may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival (see the section below for more detailed information on such Dead on Arrival products)"
Also, according the the Apple's definition, "an Apple-branded hardware product is considered DOA if it shows symptoms of a hardware failure, preventing basic operability, when you first use it after opening the box. "
So I'm guessing light leakage, the yellow tint and/or the dead pixels are NOT considered something that prevent "basic operability"?
If I can't return it, can I send it in for repair instead? Under the standard one-year limited warranty for Ipad, do I need to pay for anything?

The way the "replacement" works with an engraved product is that it's Apple's choice to repair or replace. If Apple replaces it (which may be more likely with an iPad than with an iMac, say) then Apple will send you a new (unengraved) one. (And the choice to repair or replace is Apple's anyway, engraved or not.)
Speaking just for myself, I chose engraving because that was going to increase my enjoyment while I use my product. Speaking again just for myself, there's certainly a market for engraved items. Just knock a few dollars off the price and some of us will gladly take your engraved version off your hands.
If you really are concerned about resale value (I've only sold one of my 8 Apple computers and zero iPods or displays so I couldn't care less about resale value) then keep the box and packaging, keep it pristine, and buy AppleCare.

  • Store vs. on-line purchased light leakage

For those of you who have noticed light leakage on your iPad2, did you purchase your iPad at a store (which one), or on-line?

Just reposting what i wrote in a similar thread:
Brand new ipad2 ships with brightness at 50%. For users who turn it down below 50% for preference, i'm sure there's hardly any light bleeding complaints.
For those that use brightness well above 50%, sure ok i can understand how light bleeding may be noticed at times. Go exchange it if you must.
But for those perfectionists who turn brightness up near 100% and then start searching for bleed issues... at night... on a pure black screen... good luck to ya. You'll never find that "perfect" ipad2.

  • Tomorrow I will get my 3rd ipad2 due to light leakage!

I'll let you guys know how it works out, I will try a different store this time. I am a little mad about this issue.....

Look..in the scheme of important things in life, especially with all that is happening in Japan as I type this, the light leakage is no big deal....BUT..
Having spent over $1100.00 on my iPad 2 with all accessories and apple care, tax etc and replacing my original iPad that I had no issues with and having light leakage around the edges of the new one ... This is a situation that's not acceptable...especially with such a high ticket item...
If all of my LCD display tv's and pc monitors had this issue it would be a problem...
Apple needs to and most certainly will take care of this issue....Foxconn will have to eat a lot of displays I will tell you that...

  • Why does my replacement ipad refuse to accept my gmail password?

I restored content to my replacement ipad from the cloud.  But in trying to set up my gmail accounts, I get a "wrong password" error notice whenever I enter my (correct) password.  Can anyone help?

try again.  delete the account, and start from scratch.  pay real close attention to the password entry, including capitals and any special characters.
At one point i got real frustrated with that same issue.  to this day I do not know what the issue was.  but i ended up going into my google account from a pc, and changing the password to a new one, then readded the gmail account to the pad and all was well.  (you then need to updaye any other devices using the same g mail account)

  • Light gray question mark in Finder window

In OS 10.4.11, I have just noticed there is a light gray question mark just to the right of the little cog wheel icon (I think it's called "action"; it's a pull down menu.) I don't get any explanation when I run my cursor over it. When I double click on it I get a Finder message: "The item cannot be found." What item? I never put anything there in the first place. It seems to be benign, but so do a lot of things just before they blow. Mostly I just want to know what it is. The phrase "question mark" is one of those series of words that cannot be used as a search. It is too common. Thanks in advance for any help.
    MGuilfoile

Thanks, but it isn't from a previous set up. I bought this computer new and have never added anything to the Finder menu bar. It is strange, but control-clicking (or option clicking) allowed me to get rid of it. I just wish I knew what it had been for. What would one put there?

  • Apple Care transfer to replacement iPad

I was wondering if someone could help me with this question?
I recieved the iPad 3. This had a screen issue so I contacted Apple, and chose the Express Product Replacment. The advisor told me it carries a £29 fee but if I decided to take out the Apple Care package, then it would be free. I decided to pay the £69 for the Apple Care Plan.
Now on the Apple Care Protection Plan Certificate email that I received it shows the serial number for the faulty iPad that I returned. I was wondering, will I need to contact Apple to get the serial number altered to the serial number for the replacement iPad?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks both. I'll wait till the paper work comes for the Apple Care (I think the agent told me I should receive it in around 5 days) and then I'll contact them to update the details. Thanks again its much appreciated
