Light Marquis with Motion 3 (Patrick Sheffield)

I am a complete noob, so my apologies is this is a stupid question.
I need to do a Marquis for a friend doing a rap video (I agreed to do editing and got suckered into this). This is the basic look that he is looking for:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeYKViPNnGs
Notice how the light bulbs flash on and off in waves. Also, the lights have to have a platinum look rather than gold.
Finally, a question specifically for you, Patrick Sheffield: what training materials do you recommend for a complete Motion 3 novice?
Thanks.

Mark's already told you about using a Replicator for the light bulbs. As to training, I can't recommend a higher source than Mark's books and DVD.

Also, I'm partial to the Fun With... series right here...

I’m afraid you may have bitten off more than you might want to chew.
The resulting pixels of an in-camera-blur combine information about the color/brightness of back- and foreground (edit: the result of surface properties and lighting conditions) with motion (basically transparency for this task) in such a way that it seems exceedingly difficult (maybe even improssible) to isolate the foreground in a »pure« form.
One may get a halfway decent mask (as the backgound is at least almost uniform and brighter than the foreground elements) but you may have to manually decontaminate the transparent areas, otherwise the masked object in front of a dark background would have a bright edge.

  • Which Mac Pro configuration for Patrick Sheffield's posterization in Motion

I plan to get a Mac Pro, after Final Touch releases a universal version. Real-time color grading requires a G5 or a Mac Pro. I also want to do Motion, accomplishing the posterization that was produced by other means in Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. Patrick Sheffield has shown enough of such to encourage me to go in that direction. How should my Mac Pro be configured?
I am but an ambitious newbie, so I will do none of this tomorrow.
As a one-man studio I need the highest level of productivity I can get. Real-time feedback seems a key to that productivity.
How should my Mac Pro be configured? I am not made of money, but will forgo my golf club membership for the arts.
    LM

Well, not sure about withdrawing your post, but what I'm considering is:
    $3678 Mac Pro
    __200 2 gig ram (makes a total of 3)
    __800 4 500 gig drives ($300 for 4 250 gigs)
_1600 AJA Kona LHe (for HD video)
    _1500 2 Dell 24" Monitors
    $7778
That's for the 3.0 Ghz with 1 gig of ram. The other 2 gig are from Newegg.com - and I want the X1900 gfx card. The 7300 is not ideal for Motion. I plan on throwing an IDE drive in the spare optical drive bay so I can RAID the 4 SATA drives. I also want a few spare drive sleds so I can have different setups for different needs.
Drop from that the things you don't need - probably can get by without the Kona card. You most likely already have monitors, etc...
    That's my wish list anyway...

  • Compositing with Motion

Hi, has anyone done multiple layers compositing using Motion before(more than 10 layers, each with lots of nesting objects). The problem I face is after awhile(a few minutes to be exact), Motion becomes extremely sluggish, I cannot add/duplicate layers, my videos become distorted and occationally the program will just quit by itself.
I am using dual 2.7GHz, 4.5Gb ram, X800 XT, Fibre Channel HD
The items I have in the project are:
    - cg background video
    - life plate(chroma keyed)
    - shadow generated using the life plate
    - light wraps (manually created using lots of layers)
    - simulated lights effect
    - other foreground CG elements(alpha channel video)
    My videos are 10bit uncompressed.
I know Motion is not exactly a compositing software, but it is much easier to execute compare to other compositing software and Motion is what I have for now.
Any suggestion on whether should I stick with Motion or move on to Shake instead? Thanks in advance.
    jovan

    Hey Jovan,
Try clearing your RAM every so often. As soon as you hit play, Motion begins to fill your RAM.
Run your activity monitor in Utilities, clear your RAM, and then hit play in Motion and see how much playback you get before your RAM is full. If you clear your RAM before it gets full, that should clear up your problems. It did mine. It is kind of a pain to have to navigate through a drop down menu to clear the RAM as often as you might need to. A key command to clear the RAM would be most helpful.
I have to give Patrick the credit for this work around. He's the one that suggested I check out the activity monitor.
    Hope this helps.

  • Frustrated with Motion's instability

I am pretty frustrated with Motion right about now. I understand it has some powerful capabilities (of which currently fulfill all my needs) and is in a relatively infantile state, however.... it is completely useless if it can't do what it should do because of poor performance and bugs. I am glad I'm not importing anything from Motion to FCP because judging from this board, that's a whole other pandora's box of eggshells.
I've read posts here of Motion crashing due to 10.4.3, Decklink desktop settings, ANY image filters, font issues, QT version issues, projects too big, etc... I started off pretty good, but as my project has grown during production, Motion has gotten shakier and shakier. Constant beach balls, random non-responsiveness, crashing with no rhyme or consistent cause... you name it. How can Apple call this a "Pro" app?! I read a post stating that Motion is not meant for anything larger than a few second effect or lower-third graphic... what the **** good is that?
I've tried removing my duplicate fonts, I don't have a decklink card, I deleted preferences, I repaired permissions, I installed (and reinstalled) updates, I changed export settings many times, I am even forced to disable image filters when I'll be working on that section because if that filtered image has to be drawn for the screen, Motion crashes. This is insane. I can't even tell you how many folks have written on here how Motion's problems seriously crimped their tight work deadlines. I'm in the same boat. And quite frankly, I'm very concerned that this project won't get built and rendered in time because of Motion's instability.
I'm beginning to wonder if I should have went with AE instead. This project isn't that hard. If Motion can't handle a 1 minute piece, with 2 short movie clips, and no audio... what can it handle?!
    -J

    Heya Justin,
Motion has its strengths and weaknesses, but as a motion graphics artist and/or compositor, you'll want to have a few tools in your arsenal. Motion, for example, plays fairly well with AE. You can open Motion projects as QT movies in AE and see automatic updates when you make changes to the projects (in Motion).
Combustion is a great tool, as Patrick pointed out. It has a somewhat long story behind it, but it is considered a direct competitor to AE. Among its strengths: a superior (to AE) 3D implementation, decent particles, awesome keyer, awesome tracker and more.
Nowadays, picking a tool means picking a community. AE has been around for more than a decade and has a userbase in the hundreds of thousands, so there are a lot of resources out there. It's also a bit long in the tooth, on the downward curve of its product lifecycle. Combustion has a much smaller community and Discreet has been slightly fickle about developing it. For a while, it was a major focus for the company, then it went into limbo, then it came back.
Regardless of all that, try familiarizing yourself with some of the other tools on the market. You really can only appreciate each one until you've tried another. And don't be discouraged: time and technology (things get more powerful and ever-cheaper) are on your side.
    Good luck!

  • Issues with Motion in Using Compressor for a PAL DVD

I am new to DVD Studio Pro and Compressor and am trying to create a DVD of a 50 minute PAL project that I made using FCP. I have found a couple tutorials on how to export my project using compressor to be compatible with DSP via pre sets (DVD: Best Quality 4:3) and actually manipulating the controls myself. I have found in using both techniques that during any scene with motion, the edges of the moving actor become blurred and grainy. The tutorials that I checked out I assume (since they were from the US) were for NTSC projects, is there any other considerations that I should make in compressing a PAL project, which might contribute to this graininess? Any ideas?
Any help would be much appreciated. I have included my settings from Compressor below.
    Thanks.
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 4:3
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
    Estimated file size: 273.48 MB
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
    Video Encoder
    Format: M2V
    Width: 720
    Height: 576
Pixel aspect ratio: PAL CCIR 601
    Crop: None
    Frame rate: 25
    Frame Controls: Off
    Aspect ratio: 4:3
    Field dominance: Bottom first
    Average data rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
    2 Pass VBR enabled
    Maximum data rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
    High quality
    Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 12, Structure: IBBP
    DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled

The general concepts are the same in terms of maintaining quality throughout the work process in terms of Codecs, exports etc.
As to the motion areas, compression markers in FCP can help in problem areas. What you should do is grab some of the problems sections and drop markers in there and encode them. Some of the frame controls can help, depending on source footage. What was the original material and cpautred/edited? Sometimes things in there can also give quality hits.
Lastly some things (like real black outfits on light backgrounds) can cause some edging issues which can take some work to clean up as much as possible...

  • Masking issues with Motion 5

    Hi guys,
I had this general masking technique that I used with Motion 4 where I'd use any group of shapes, paintstrokes and so on, to mask some other object by dragging my group of "mask objects" into the image mask source well.
This technique no longer works as expected with Motion 5.
As an example, consider this project where I want to gradually reveal a circle.
Below are screen shots from both Motion 4 and Motion 5 of the same project, at frame 10:
As you can see, Motion 4 gradually unveils the masked shape (a circle), but Motion 5 doesn't.
I could get around this particular case by adding a write on behaviour to the circle shape. BUt this does not work as a general masking technique in M5, which is a bit sad.
Anyone care to shed some light?

You could get away with it by setting the blending mode to stencil alpha, but that won't work in every situation.  The other thing you could do, is place the layer that's the source of the mask at the very bottom of everything, so it's not shown, and leave the layer turned on.  Then all should work sorta the same.  Quirky.
I'm not really familiar with what stencil alpha does, so I can't comment on that.
But the bottom layer option won't be any good if you want partially transparent output.
It *will* show unless you have some layer covering it up, which would be purely coincidential
UNLESS you use one very very special color for the mask source shape, and send the whole shebang through the keyer to get your alpha channel proper
    Chandosx wrote:
And one other way I just tested, that works for sure, is using keyframes on the source shape's "First Point Offset"(or last ).
Hey, a self-made "write-on" for the mask source shape?
Well, it works in M4 - I'll confirm with M5 tomorrow.
Thanks for all your efforts to figure this out!
I still certainly consider this a bug and would expect this to be fixed.
How can I go ahead and report this a bug to Apple, are they monitoring this forum?
    Cheers!

    Hi
I have a problem with color prints from photoshop elements 12. The pictures are too light and with strange colors. I have a Canon pixma mg615I0 printer and use mac os X yosemite. The pictures are taken with a coanon eos 550d in the color space sRGB. I have followed adobes recommendations and have tried both letting the printer respektive photoshop manage the colors. But nothing works. I see that there are different opinions about which is best to do so I tried both. I have the latest printer driver installed. Can anyone help me with this?

    Do the following:
Print a test page from the printer. Perhaps the print head needs cleaning via its maintenance facility.
Let the printer manage colors, not PSE
    Calibrate the monitor

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:

While in Encore, I go to dynamic link and boom, dynamic link to AE is not highlighted. If I can't make an interactive menu with motion using adobe, then what can I use? This is causing a major problem for me and my clients. (if i over looked the answer to this in another post, my apologies)

You can use the "Create After Effects Composition." This prompts you to create an independent version of the Encore PSD menu file, and opens the layered file in AE CC and creates a new composition with appropriate settings. AE no longer has mpeg export, so you export from AE to AME.
There were some workflow options that I did not play with much, but they were never what I saw as the basics for using AE to create the motion background.
You need to understand these two help pages:
Adobe Encore * Menu timing and looping

I'm not sure what you mean by "interactive" unless you just mean creating navigation.

  • Still image with motion has flicker pulsating problem

    I use FCP 5.0.4
I have read the many threads about this subject and am still not able to succeed in getting rid of the flicker/pulsating in a still image with motion.
I would say about 25% of the stills with motion have the jitters; all the rest look great.
The first thing I tried was
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Field Shift:none
    as well as
Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter min, med, and max.
Maybe 5% were corrected with this, but the other 20% still had the jitters even after using a combination of the above or by themselves.
I just burned a test DVD using a variety of the persistently jittery stills from my current project and although the jitters change a bit, they were still there so all of these failed:
    1. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Upper (odd)
    2. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter minimal
    3. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter max
    4. Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
    5. Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    6. All the tricks together which means
Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace set at Upper (odd)
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Shift Fields: none
    Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
I know this issue has been kicked around a lot and i know some folks are not happy that it has to be kicked around at all. But I am doing something wrong because my DVDs look very un-PRO. Would anyone like to talk me through this nightmare preferably with as many details as possible since I am obviously missing something critical.
    Thanks in advance.

There is no 'secret formula'. It just takes thinking through the issues.
    1. Set the image size for each image that makes sense within the context of your project. Going significantly larger than the displayed area of that image (including movement) is just asking FCP to do additional work to resize the image. FCP is less sophisticated at resizing images than Photoshop. Use Photoshop and your planning of the movie to get the images to the appropriate size.
    2. Wasted effort and totally irrelevant- you could set it to 7200 dpi if it makes you feel better.
    3. Good idea - be sure to knock down areas of pure or very bright white. These are the elements that will give you the most trouble.
    4. Don't do this unless you want to throw away HALF the picture information. Deinterlace deletes half the picture and then photoshop recreates it through interpolation of the remaining half of the picture. Why do this?
    5. Make your determination based on what works. If you have properly exposed and sized the material, the need to blur is greatly reduced. ONLY do it on the images that need it. Why degrade every image if you do not need to do so?
    6. See number 5
    7. Lay out your time line early, view the work on an external broadcast monitor and only mess about with the images that require it.
In the psycho business they have term for much of the referenced post - it's called superstitious behavior. Basically it comes down to "It worked before so we recommend it to everyone without regard to their situation" ... here's another example:
Many years ago in my architecture practice, we had one of the early 512k macs (upgraded from the 128k!) I needed to show one of the interns how to create a project budget spread sheet in Excel. Inadvertently I clicked on Word, said "oops", closed it and opened Excel and we went to work.
A week later I was walking by the computer and overheard the same intern explaining how to work with Excel to another architect. "First you open Word, close it, THEN you open Excel", she explained. When asked by her 'trainee', why do you have to open Word first, wouldn't it just be easier to simply open Excel? Her answer was just perfect, "Well, it works every time, what's wrong with that?" so it goes ...
    good luck with your project.

  • How to create a front panel display that lights up with different colours depending on its input signal?

I am doing a project where I have this array which has different voltage outputs for each grid. How do I create a front panel object that lights up with different colours depending on the voltage input or is there already such a pre-built function?
In addition, I wish to display these in an array on screen. Is there any pre-built function for this?

The simplest way would be an intensity graph. It gives you a 2D grid where each grid point is colored according to the value of a 2D array. The Z axis color ramp determines the color.
My second choice would be an array of colorboxes. (They could even be made to look like LEDs (see image, if course you can leave them square too), All you need is a scaling function thap maps voltages into a color ramp lookup table with an 8bit index)
(Using booleans and color property nodes is relatively clumsy. Booleans are meant for two states because the value is boolean. Since array elements can only differ in value, and not in properties, it will not even work. Color boxes have a color data type which is much more appropriate for this case)
