Lightroom 4 Catalog issues

I am trying to open my copy of lightroom 4 but when I go to open it, it says that my catalog is already running in a different version of lightroom. But there is no other version of lightroom running. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling lightroom but that did not work. Please help!!

Please quote the exact error message.
Did you try re-booting your computer?
Here's a guess: look for a .lock file in the same folder as your catalog and then remove (delete) the .lock file

  • Lightroom 5 Catalog Issues

I've been a LR user since v2 and I've never had any significant catalog issues until LR5.  This isn't so much of a question, more of a statement which I am hoping someone at Adobe reads.  The issues I've recently encountered are as follows...
Issue 1)  LR5 fails to import Panoramas created in Photoshop CC
    - Select several photos in LR5, right-click and select Merge to Panorama in Photoshop.
    - Once pano is created, click save in Photoshop and then exit.
    - Merged photos fail to appear in LR5.
    - In Finder, navigate to folder and verify newly created panos are saved (as PSDs) in the same folder as source images = Yes
    - In Photoshop, verify "Maximize Compaitibility" setting is checked = Yes
    - In LR open the Import dialog to attempt to import the missing Pano just created.  The pano image is found but is grayed out and I am presented with a message that the photo already exists in the library.
    - Attempt to syncronize folder... LR thinks all 10 photos are missing but sees 11 new photos to add (11 because the of the pano).  Syncronization removes the 10, then adds them back to the catalog but fails to add the 11th, the Pano file.  Successive attempts at sychronizing the folders yield the exact same results (see Issue 2).
Issue 2)  LR5 thinks all my photos are missing (photo missing message under histogram)
    - Attempts to syncronize a folder yield 100 missing photo and 100 new photos found (100 is just an example).
    - Syncronization removes the missing photos and adds the exact same photo right back to the catalog, however the problems persists.
    - Successive attempts to synchronize the folder yield the exact same results (100 photos missing and removed, 100 new photos added).  LR is stuck in a loop.
Issue 3) LR5 not creating the correct folder in my folder structure on import.
    - Import is configured to create a new folder for each day (e.g. 2013-07-25) within a year folder (e.g 2013).
    - Upon import LR5 tells confirms it will create a 2013-07-25 folder within the 2013 folder, however upon import the it is actually created in the root photos folder at the same level at the 2013 folder.  In other words, Photos/2013-07-25/ instead of Photos/2013/2013-07-25.
No photos were ever moved.  No changes to the folder structure were made inside or outside of LR.  And no changes to import pre-sets have been made.
I've seen issue number 2 on two seperate computers with completely different catalogs.
I was able to resolve my issues somewhat by importing new photos and manually specifying where in my 2013 folder they are to be stored.  Doing so seemed to remind LR where my photos were and the issues listed above appear to be resolved for now.  That said, I am still receiving the "Photo is Missing" error under the histogram, although the photo counts when I attempt to synchronize the folder(s) are now correct (0 photos missing, 0 new photos to add).

This has been where Adobe asked people to post bugs but with the demise of the online photo hosting photoshop.com website that shares the same domain name, new user creating may not be working, but you can try:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family
Issue 2) is something I’ve seen—the erroneous Missing Photos indication even though I was working on the photos, and exporting them and printing them just fine, without ever having created a smart preview.  I’m glad I read this because I might not have thought about doing a synchronization and having LR5 removing and re-adding the photos, wiping out my edit history.   I can say that the photos I saw as missing, before, are now properly indicated as online so it may be a temporary condition that can be remedied by restarting LR or restarting the computer, though I’ve not really investigated carefully, since it only happened once.

  • Lightroom 5 catalog issue. please help

    hallo everybody,
I really need some help. When i open Lightroom 5, it gets confused and the catalog is not complete anymore. Half of them are missing. It shows the pictures on my SD card, which I always format. In other backups it's the same thing. So, I had to reimport all pictures which did month's ago and now the same AGAIN That can't be....
    please help.
    thanks to everyone that replies.

Are you speaking about Lightroom? By "main page", do you mean the Library Module with "All Photographs" selected?
If so, right-click on any photo and select Go To Folder in Library and it will highlight the folder  containing this photo in the left-hand side Folder Panel.

  • Lightroom 6 Catalog issues

I've been saving my catalog in Lightroom 6 on a regular basis and have had no problem clicking on the Lightroom 6 icon to continue working until today.  None of my backups will open other than the 5.7.1 catalog which I would have to update to 6 again.  When I view my version 6 catalogs I see a folder with a zipper which implies the folder info is in ZIP format.  How does one open these folders and what did I do wrong to get to this problem in the first place?
    Don

The standard LR 6 catalog file is not a ZIP file. Those ZIP files are Back Ups of the original catalog. Do a search of your HDD for *.lrcat (The Star(*) is a wild card character and may not be needed in Windows or Mac Spotlight search system). That will turn up the original, standard, default, LR catalog file.
When you say you have been SAVING your LR catalog what exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean Backing it Up? You can't really SAVE the catalog. There is no Save or Save As in the File menu item and to my knowledge Ctrl + S or Ctrl + Shift + S do nothing. It saved automatically every time you add something to it, make changes to the user/program Preferences/Options or to the catalog settings.

  • Lightroom 4 - Catalog problem?

I recently installed Lightroom 4.0 on my new Windows 7 Home Premiun SP1 (64 bit) computer and imported my Lightroom 3.6 catalog into a Lightroom 4 catalog.
I have two problems which may or may not be related.
    First:
While working in the Library, adding key words, etc., Lightroom will suddenly report in the current photo "The file named "xxxx (either .mrw or .jpg)" is offline or missing". On viewing the folder listing in the left-hand pane, all of the folders display with a "?". They did not do so moments before.
    Second:
My LR4 import path is C:\Users\Bain\Pictures\My LightRoom.
However, Lightroom is displaying the folders imported since the upgrade as if they are in the root of C:
When I view the folders in Windows Explorer they are displayed properly in the My Lightroom folder.
I'd apprecaite any suggestions or help in resolving these issues.
    Bain

    Thanks for your reply Brett
Let me clarify the issue of the Missing Folder.
    1.       The Lightroom 4 folder listing is normal
    2.       While working on a photo in a folder I receive the "The file named "xxxx (either .mrw or .jpg)" is offline or missing" message.
    3.       All of the folders in the folder listing are displayed with the question mark “?”.
    4.       This issue has occurred multiple times.
I worked in Lightroom until I was able to recreate the “offline or missing” message, and all the folders in My Lightroom displayed ‘?’
I followed your instructions, right-clicking on the folder the error occurred in, selecting Find Missing Folder and browsing the  folder location, the folder view flickered, but all folders continued to display ‘?’.
While I was typing this, the folder listing in LR ‘refreshed’ and the folders no longer displayed ‘?’
As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating.

  • How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?

How can I EXCLUDE particular folders/files from being included in the Lightroom 5 catalog?
I want to be able to specify paths and/or filename patterns that should NEVER be indexed in the catalog: not that they don't show up under certain circumstances, just that they are NOT THERE (in the catalog) to begin with!!
I also do NOT want to have to respecify these criteria when "synching" the catalog; criteria should be PERMANENT (or at least 'til they're changed in LR preferences).
I cannot be the only person in the world with this problem--but it sure seems like it, because I've spent an inordinate amount of time doing online searches & I can't find anything that addresses this issue.
    Can anyone PLEASE HELP me?
BTW, Adobe employees (if there are any of you out there), I'm simply trying out LR now.  If I can't get this (seemingly fundamental) thing worked out (with relatively little effort), Adobe is going to LOSE A SALE of LR, because it's useless to me without this feature.
    Thanks,
    -t

Thanks for the info... but how to you TELL LR to EXCLUDE images in a particular directory/directory structure?  The intuitive place to indicate this would be a right-click on the folder itself (or particular images), but no such option exists..  "???"  Thanks again, -pt
The same way that you avoid buying things in your local convenience store. You don't stick a lot of labels on certain shelves, slap a credit card down on the counter each week, and announce you are buying everything that doesn't have a label on its shelf. You just choose the things you want to buy.
Your mention of "synching the catalog" suggests that you are expecting the LR library, to mirror the total images in the computer by default. This is not IMO a useful way to think about it. LR contains no images at all, by default: the Catalog starts out empty.
Then you Add just those selected images that you want to import, among those already in the computer. That's a one-off process which is IMO best achieved controllably in batches - which you can keyword and otherwise organise in LR terms as you go. For new incoming images, ongoing, it is a question of Copying, Moving or Adding these in defined batches as they occur - from the relevant location only - there is no need to re-consider the import of a wider body of images. And one would not want to repeat that whole task anyway: one's prior investment in achieving the right selectivity, has a positive value.

  • Strange Catalog Issue or bug. Help, photos disappeared help?

My images disappeared in the catalog. They are not missing, they are just not visable. I think there is a bug in the Fliter section.
Let me explain. I have one Main folder with 5 Sub folders. All those folders contain random amounts of images. (i.e. the path would be...  Photo/2010/BeachShoot, or Photo/2008/PartyPics... etc).
I imported 5 years of images, hence 5 Sub Folders. I was randomly flagging images to be rejected with the 'x' key. Basically routine maintenance... flag so many, then call up only the rejected photos in the grid view, select all, then delete. Remove the Flag Filter... repeat process over and over...   Basic, simple work...
Now... doing the exact some thing.. I removed all Flag filters and my images are no longer appearing in the catalog. I tested, by turning on flags, off flags.. etc. The images did not accidentally get deleted. I checked my hard drive location. Images are there. I rebooted the machine, I opened up another catalog, to trick it back... did not work. I tried to re-import the images.. but it says they are already in the catalog.
Strange part: On the Left Sidebar window, under Catalog "All Photographs" it shows the correct number of photos in the catalog. However... the strange part... Under "Folders" in the Left Sidebar beneath Catalogs my Main Folder shows "Zero" number of images. But, if I click on a sub root folder where the images reside, they number changes from Zero to the correct number of images and my images reappear on the screen as normal..
The work around... click on every subfolder...
    The solution... Unsure? Help!

  • Rescue my photos from a lightroom 5 catalog! PLEASE!!!

Okay, I have read every help thread and web page, and nobody seems to have advice for my specific problem. I am praying for the sake of my whole summer's worth of work that someone here can help me.
I used Lightroom 5 on a Windows 8 laptop this summer and had a catalog of about 5000 photos, most of which I did not have extra copies of anywhere. This was not intentional, but when I plugged my sd card into my laptop, lightroom would import the photos and I assumed it was also placing a hard copy in a folder somewhere. I am a moron. Anyway.
That laptop partially MELTED, and a friend managed to back up my hard drive to my external, which was obviously formatted for a PC. Here is where it gets tricky.
Another friend lent me her old laptop, which can't use lightroom 5. I installed lightroom 4, but found I could not open or access my old catalog. All of those partially-edited photos that I hadn't exported yet are trapped in there. I am a student. I worked hard on those photos. Dozens of shoots this summer with models and makeup artists are rendered worthless if I cannot get those photos.
My friend lent me his computer, which I am on right now. It's a newer mac and has Lightroom 5. BUT it won't open my catalog from my hard drive because of some formatting issue. So. I copied the catalog and the previews catalog (trying to follow How to Recover Images from Lightroom Previews ) to the desktop, but that method is not working. I've tried everything. I am having a full emotional breakdown. This work means SO much to me and if it's lost I have let SO many people down and I am BEGGING someone, anyone, to help me find a solution. 5000 photos I may never get back. It's unbelievable. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP.

The Lightroom (LR) catalog does not contain your image files. When piictures are imported LR moves a copy of the image files from the camera memory card to a folder location on your hard drive. If you do not specify a folder location they will be copied to the default Windows 8 'My Pictures' folder. That is where you will find your image files! The LR Catalog contains your LR Develop module editing settings for image file and any metadata tags you may have added.
Your LR 5 catalog will not open using LR 4 because it is an older version that does not support the new features. A Mac system will not be able to open the catalog with LR 5 since the external drive is probably NTFS formatted. You can however "read" the files on the external drive using Mac Finder. Check it and see if you can find your camera image files, which are probably in the 'Pictures' folder.

What do you mean by "melted?" Please explain the symptoms, what actually failed,  and how the hard drive was copied over to the external drive.
As dj_paige has mentioned you should make regular backup copies of your LR catalog to an external hard drive. You also need to backup all of your imported image files in the 'My Pictures' folder or wherever you have stored them! I also suggest reading LR tutorials to get a better understanding of how "non-destructive" editing works with your image files. Here's a good place to start:

Read 'Importing Your Images' first and continue from there as needed.

  • "Lightroom -- Opening Catalog Studio Session-003.JPG.lrcat"

For more than two years I had no problems that were encountered using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.2 (which was upgraded to Adobe PS Lightroom 3.6). Until last month I could not open my Lightroom v 3.6. with this message on the screen --- "Lightroom -- Opening Catlog Studio Session-003.JPG.lrcat"
To remove the cause which I believed was in the later version of Lightroom v 3.6, I uninstalled Lightroom v 3.6 and reinstalled the Lightroon v 3.2 from the DVD I purchased more than two years ago.
After reinstalling LR 3.2, I restarted my computer and after that I double-clicked the LR icon giving me this message: “Lightroom – Opening Catalog: Studio Session-003.JPG.lrcat”
In the box I saw this message:
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 64-bit has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. Close program

The name of the Catalog file indicates that you have inadvertantly selected a jpeg image file as a name for a new catalog. I am not sure the full and correct way to resolve the issue but I believe it includes removing the offending "inapproprately named catalog file".
Maybe someone else will provide some additional info. In the meantime if you could post a screen capture of the contents of your "user>(your name)my pictures> Lightroom" folder. This will assist.

  • Opening a Lightroom 3 Catalog in Lightroom 5

I'm trying to open a Lightroom 3 catalog in Lightroom 5.  I'm getting an error that says the catalog is not writable and cannot be opened.  Can Lightroom 5 open a Lightroom 3 catalog?

Lr 5 can create a copy to upgrade from or upgrade directly an Lr 3 catalog. What I think you are seeing is the result of some permissions issue with the Lr3 catalog file or the folder containing it.

  • Lightroom to Photoshop Issue

On Lightroom 3.0 and Photoshop CS5.
    Issue:
I save a file out of Photoshop editing back to Lightroom.  It is not showing up in Lightroom.  The .psd is saved in the original file folder (does not come back in to Lightroom just the folder).  Help me.  This killing my workflow for exporting out .jpg from Lightroom.
    Thanks,

Are you selecting the original file in Lightroom and then 'Edit in Photoshop'?  When I do this and then save to the same folder in Photoshop the new file shows up in Lightroom's catalog without any further action be me.  Do you have the Photoshop option set to 'Maximise PSD compatibility'?

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I can't open Lightroom 3.3 at all.  I get this message in black and white   - Lightroom - Opening Catalog:Dsc-1555.jpg.Ircat on the screen
I click for more information and get the following.

  • Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata?

I am running into space problems on my C drive (hard to imagine, but I my computer was configured before LR and iTunes).  I have moved the iTunes music to another drive, but still need to free up space.  LR is using over 3GB in the following location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata
Under it are folders 0 through 9 and A through F (plus a file called thumbnail-cache.db).  These in turn have their own subfolders.  Can I remove the whole C:\Documents and Settings\DandJ\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata structure?  Do I need to change a preference to have this preview stuff go to a different drive in the future?  My 'Camera Raw Cache Settings' is now pointing to a different drive, but this doesn't seem to be the same thing.
I would LOVE to have that 3GB+ free for other things (like defragging without having to move stuff back and forth)!
    Thanks.

You can move your Lightroom catalogue and the previews to a different drive. The previews always must be in the same folder that the catalogue lives in. After you move them, simply double-click on the moved catalogue file to open it, and away you go.

  • Loss of Lightroom 4 catalog

I have lost my Lightroom 4 catalog. This was caused by a loose connection to my external drive where I keep my recent photos. The loose connection caused Lightroom to crash with a message 'fatal error'. My Lightroom 4 catalog backup is kept on my main C drive in My Pictures. I had backed up the day previously. I don't understand why the whole backup file has apparently been deleted. I have done a search to see if it is elsewhere on the drive but can't find it. When I try to open Lightroom I get the message 'upgrade the catalog file Lightroom 3 for use with Lightroom 4.

Have you used Mac's search tool (Spotlight?) to look for files ending in ".lrcat"  (the first letter of that is an ell, not an eye )?
That's what your catalogue will be named.
