Lightroom 5 and LR3 controls switch around.

I used LR3 successfully on my iMac for years.  I upgraded to OS X 10.8.5 software, and then installed LR5.  It worked perfectly until yesterday.
The problem: When opening LR5 and navigating to the Develop module, the control panel of LR3 appears, the new controls of LR5 are not there at all.  If I click on Lightroom top left next to the Apple icon it read Lightroom5, indicating the name of the current software being used.  The same thing happens when I open LR3, then I get the controls for LR5 when I am in the Develop module.  I have closed and re-opened LR3 and LR5.  I have turned my computer off, and back on again, and the problem persists.  I went far back and it would be a problem with images taken years ago, then with images taken a few months ago there would be no problem, and then with images taken just last week the problem shows up again.
I do not open LR3 regularly, since I purchased LR5.  I had to open LR3 to check on something and since I did that the problem started.
The problem mentioned is not consistent and it does not seem date related in terms of when the images were taken or when they were imported into LR.
Any advice would be very welcome.
Thank you.

I just did some testing.  I shall explain what I did and what my results
were.  I used my Canon 1DMK4 with a newly formatted SanDisk 16GB extreme
card and took some images about 5min ago.
I use an iMac with OS X 10.8.5
I always import all my images through a program called EOS Utility.  This
helps lets me customize my file names.  I have been using it for a long
time with great success in LR3 anf LR5.
The images get stored in a file in PICTURES on my hard disc, from where I
import them into LR.  These image files in PICTURES are sequenced according
to dates.
I then open LR, and import into LR, from PICTURES, using the LR import
button on the bottom left.
Here are the 4 tests with their results:
1.  I took several images around the house during the past few minutes.
The first two images I imported via EOS Utility into PICTURES, and from
PICTURES into LR5, using the Import button.
(LR3 was closed.)
I viewed the images in Library.
Then I opened the images in the Develop module.
On the left side are the LR5 presets, on the right side are the sliders for
LR3.
When I click on Lightroom top left next to the Apple icon, it reads
Lightroom5.
2.  For the second test.
The second two images I imported via EOS Utility into PICTURES, and from
PICTURES into LR3, using the Import button.
(LR5 was closed).
I viewed the images in Library.
Then I opened the images in the Develop module.
On the left side are the LR3 presets, on the right side are the sliders for
LR5.
When click on Lightroom top left next to the Apple icon, it reads
Lightroom3.
3.  For the third test:
The third two images I imported directly into LR5.
I plugged in my camera into the computer, switched on the camera, and
imported directly into LR5.
(LR3 was closed).
I viewed the images in Library.
Then I opened the images in the Develop module.
On the left side are the LR5 presets, on the right side are the sliders for
LR3.
When I click on Lightroom top left next to the Apple icon, it reads
Lightroom5.
4.  For the fourth test:
The fourth two images I imported directly into LR3.
I plugged in my camera into the computer, switched on the camera, and
imported directly into LR3.
(LR5 was closed).
I viewed the images in Library.
Then I opened the images in the Develop module.
On the left side are the LR3 presets, on the right side are the sliders for
LR5.
When I click on Lightroom top left next to the Apple icon, it reads
Lightroom3.
In all four tests the results are such that the left side and right of the
Develop module are not of the same LR, it is always a combo of the LR3 and
the LR5, never a pure LR3, and never a pure LR5.
Thank you

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.

  • Can I buy a Lightroom upgrade (from LR3) with a perpetual licence and a student discount? If so, which page do I need? Thanks.

I am trying to buy a Lightroom upgrade (from LR3) with a perpetual licence and with a student discount.
If I go the student discount route on the web U get taken to the 'cloud' options which I don't want.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
PS Is the upgrade worth it in any case??

I believe there are NO upgrades for Student and Teacher editions but you can see here: Products
If the price is the same as an ordinary upgrade you are probably better off buying that because it can be upgraded in the future.

I'm not sure what you mean by the times get switched around, but you migh check on both mac and device in the Time & Date section of preferences/settings to be sure they are both in the same time zone.

Sounds for what? Music, apps, alerts? Or all?
Make Sure iOS is updated to the latest version
Reboot the device by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • IWeb Images and Assets Switched Around After Publishing to MobileMe

    Hello,
A few days ago a podcast I am hosting started acting odd. If I add a new graphic element to the site, ALL graphic elements get moved around, stretched, rotated, etc.
This DOESN'T happen when I publish to a folder.
I managed to do some workarounds so that the site looks "useable" but all of my borders and colors are moved around. After digging through, I managed to find what goes wrong.
Here is a screenshot of the homepage published to disk: http://imgur.com/p35EZ.png
and here it is published to mobileme: http://web.me.com/ksnowsb108/PhuketSpring_Podcasts/Main_Page/MainPage.html
You can see its not so bad because I tweaked it a lot, but if I so much as add anything, ALL of the photos get rotated around, I get a red arrow instead of the top left building photo, etc.
As I said earlier, I found the problem, but I can't fix it yet. For some reason, when publishing to mobileme the "shapeimage_#.png" files get out of sync. Here is what I mean: http://imgur.com/xcCpP.png
As you can see, shapeimage_7.png corresponds to a red arrow when published to disk, however it shows up as the blue arrow in mobileme. So right now it's not fatal, but one more shift and then the yellow text box will appear instead of the arrow, etc.
Please please please tell me you have a solution! This podcast gets around 5,000 hits daily and it's embarrassing! I know I should not use iWeb for these things but it was a dire emergency.
I have tried going into Sites folder and deleting/reuploading, deleting cache, and preferences. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
    Thank you very, very much!

It CAN be site destroying. The only way I've found to fix it myself is to delete and recreate the page. But that is time consuming and if you do that, you have to then remember to clear your cache or you REALLY get a jumbled mess. But doesn't that then mean that visitors to your site get the same jumble unless they too remember or know how to clear their own cache? Even that doesn't fix the original problem though. And yes, it sounds like we are experiencing the same thing. Seems like others should be as well... do you update the site a lot too? Maybe people don't update as much as we do and don't see it...? Very frustrating and I hope they find an answer...

  • My iMac20 powers off by itself and won't switch back on

I'm sorry this is a bit of a saga but I'm at the end of my tether with so will be really grateful if anyone has any experience of this issue and can give me some help?
The problem started in May when, after an hour or so of use, my iMac 20 suddenly started to turn itself off and wouldn't turn back on again until the following day. This happened around half a dozen times so I took the machine to the local Apple store and was told that it was probably the thermal trip and if I removed the power cord and left it disconnected for a while, it would power up again more quickly. That evening when it cut out, I followed the advice I was given and removed the power cord from the back of the machine but it made no difference and the machine would not restart until the following morning. Back to the Apple store I went and this time they took the machine in to the workshop; a day or two later I was told that they had cleaned out the fans and tweaked some software and had run it successfully on the bench for several hours with no problem. After paying £49, I collected the machine, took it home, ran it for an hour or so and off it went again and as before, refused to turn on. Back again to the Apple store; "Had I reloaded the operating system?" Well no, because I hadn't been told that I needed to. And anyway why would I... surely the thermal cut-out was a hardware issue? The response was that the problem was definitely software-based and nothing to do with overheating or a faulty power supply unit (which was/is my favourite candidate for villain of the piece). So off home I went, backed up my stuff and ran Disc One successfully and started running Disc Two. After about 20 minutes into Disc Two the machine did its usual trick and powered off, and I went looking for a bottle of wine.
Back to the Apple store. The guy controlling the 'guest list' for the Genius Bar said that if I wanted to return the machine to the workshop that day it would be considered a new incident and there would be a further charge for any repair work. However, if I made a fresh appointment (for a couple of days later) then the work would be done as part of the previous 'repair'. Somebody at Apple really needs to look at the way the stores deal with dissatisfied customers.
So, Saturday the 11th of July arrives and I head back to the Genius Bar for my free appointment. I explained to a very helpful guy that this is my fifth visit and I would like to get to the bottom of the problem. He referred to the tech person who dealt with the original workshop repair and she came out to explain that the issue is caused by 'something' lurking in my Library folder and that if I wipe my hard drive and re-install the OS from scratch but without the Library folder, the problem should be solved.
I spent Sunday wiping the hard drive, running the OS discs and then reinstating my iTunes, photos etc and waiting for the machine to turn itself off - but it didn't! I left my external hard drive returning all my files and documents overnight and when I woke up on Monday, everything was still up and running... bliss!
Then, this afternoon, after downing loading a music file in flac format, I found that it wouldn't go into iTunes without the help of Fluke software. I downloaded the Fluke stuff and then as I dragged the flac file into iTunes - boof! The machine went off and won't switch back on again.
So finally... has anyone seen any similar behaviour with their iMac and was it caused by software or hardware? And if it is software that's causing the problem, why can't I switch the machine on again immediately?
    ,

Amsys plc, the company Apple uses for off-site repairs returned my iMac20 today and the accompanying advice note states that the fault was resolved by replacing the power supply unit. I am really grateful to Apple for finally getting to the bottom of the problem, particularly as the repair was done free of charge, although I had already paid £49 for a useless workshop investigation at the Kingston store. The service given by Amsys was exemplary... the collection and return of the machine was carried out at the times promised and whenever I contacted the company by phone, each person I spoke to seemed to have knowledge of the repair without having to refer to the case notes (and none of the 'press 1 for service, 2 for sales...' rubbish).
So once again BDAqua, many thanks for suggesting I call Apple... it's just a shame that the staff of the Kingston store refused to accept what was obvious to me.

  • Lightroom 4 (and 5)

I'm currently using Lightroom 3.x.  I have been hesitant to upgrade to Lightroom 4 because I have a bunch of presets that I really like, and I'm afraid of not being able to use them anymore if I go to Lightroom 4 (and now soon 5).
I heard someone say something recently about some kind of versioning as far as processing, and was wondering if this allows me to keep my version 3 presets for older stuff, but be able to move to updated presets when I get around to it, by switching the processing on a particular collection (telling it to use version 4, not version 3).  Is this really how it works?  Can I use Lightroom 4 and have the benefit of processing the old way if I want, on certain collections, but be able to eventually move to version 4 presets?
I'm hoping this question makes sense.

Yes...you can select which process version you want to use.

  • Lightroom 3 and PSE10 layers won't work?

I recently purchased Lightroom 3 and installed on my computer running Windows 7.  I already had Photoshop Elements 10 installed and that and Nikon Capture NX2 were what I used for editing.  PSE8 is also still installed on my computer.  When I choose to send a photo from LR3 to PSE10 for editing, all the layers choices are grayed out.  I have searched, I promise, but have not found the answer for these two combinations.  Can someone help me please?  Thank you.  All the versions are updated.

Thanks. That did it.  Now, if I could figure out about a thousand other things, I'd be all set!

  • How do I run Lightroom 3 and 4 simultaneously?

When I try to run LR3, while having LR4 open, LR3 magically knows that there is already another version of lightroom running and will, extremely inconveniently, refuse to run, instead moving focus to the already open LR4.
Is there a way to make LR3 actually run at the same time as LR4, instead of making the decision that I should want to use LR4 exlclusively for me?
Some catalogues we work with cannot be upgraded to LR4 format yet because they are shared with clients, and not all clients are on LR4 (hopefully, "yet"). Being able to perform edits in LR4 and then moving the edited-exported copy into an LR3 catalogue is required, and this is an incredibly painstaking chore if it involves closing LR4 just to start up LR3.

Indeed, installed in separate folders, and the executables have different names. This does not seem to matter - somehow, LR3 is able to query whatever silent Adobe service is runnign that some version's already running, and refuses to load. The same happens the other way around - first running LR3 and trying to run LR4 will simply not run LR4 and instead move focus to LR3.
Rikk's suggestion will have to do for now, but it's still a bit of a chore to have to artificially chop up the workflow. Does anyone know what's responsible for telling LR that another version's already running? (can that be temporarily disabled and then turned back on after LR3 and LR4 are running? =)

  • Unplugging all network devices from Fios router prevents DVR freezing and remote control lock ups.

    All,
I recently had a Verizon tech visit my house due to constant DVR and remote control freezing. TV content was freezing whether it was locally recorded, pulled from another DVR in the house, or On Demand. On a hunch after the tech tested everything and was about to leave, he unplugged my gigabit switch from the Fios router. Lo and behold everything started running perfectly. Since to the tech, the problem was solved, he closed the case and was on his way. The probem is of course I have more devices than the built in router switch provides ports for. My network is compised of an 8 port Netgear gigabit switch downstream from the Fios router with two wireless access points (with their own built in gigbait switches) connecting to the Netgear gigabit switch. There are no loops in the switch topology. I've tried changing out the router, the gigabit switch, removing the wireless acces points individually as well as plugging the access points directly into the Fios router switch (one at a time with no Netgear switch in the middle) and all scenarious cause the DVR/remote control freeezing to come back. The only devices I can plug into the Fios router without causing freezes are PC's....anything with it's own switch essentially brings the network to it's knees. If anyone has an idea how to get my network back in one piece AND make the DVR's/remotes behave, I'd greatly appreciate the help!
    My Fios equipment:

*All SNR/dB mesasurements taken by the tech from the set-top boxes and router are well within spec.

I am inclined to echo several of the "tns" comments, particularly with respect to your splitter.  My layout is based on a standard 8-port splitter of the type usually supplied in a VZ install.  In addition I do have a ChannelPlus device that functions as a powered splitter, but its use is limited to distribution of secondary TV signals to older analog TVs.  My first point then is that this may be an offender as "tns" has suggested.
In addition, I'd describe your wiring as "non-standard" (red-colored items in the above diagram)  As you're no doubt aware, with 75/35 you don't really need Cat5e from the ONT (your original diagram).  It seems the highest tiers do require it, but in "standard" installations this run is coax directly to an 8-port non-powered splitter (below diagram), then from that splitter via coax to all STBs and CableCards, other TVs, et.), and also to the Actiontec.   Subsequent feeds from the Actiontec to wired devices (including WAPs) are via Ethernet (typically Cat 5e).
In fact I don't immediately see how your STBs get additional services such as On Demand and IMG with the wiring shown in your diagram (perhaps someone can help me out here).  In "standard" installs the Actiontec must be connected via coax to the ONT to provide such services to other network clients.  I don't see that requirement being met here.
For starters I'd recommend that you change your service from WAN Ethernet to WAN coax.  This can easily be accomplished over the telephone.  Then I'd run coax directly from the ONT to the Actiontec as in my revised diagram below (blue-colored items).  If your setup can manage with this arrangement, I think it will help greatly with the "freezing" issue.

Subsequent Note:  You provided additional info while I was composing a response, and I'd  like to offer another comment.  Structured wiring "panels" of the type usually available are pre-configured to provide data, phone and video.  This usually means that one is in certain respects limited by the ideas of the panel designer.  I have what can be called a structured wiring layout, but it really is composed of individual small custom networks for  each service (automation, security, video, data, telco, etc.), configured so that all wiring terminates in "home run" fashion at a central panel (a few details here: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Home-Networking/Cmon-Show-Us-Your-Network/m-p/481733#M765 ).  This layout makes it easier to make adjustments (and there have been quite a few over the intervening years).  I'm thinking that in your case you may have to abandon the powered splitter (presumably) built into the panel in order to avoid your present fix.
Subsequent Subsequent Note:   From your description it seems that you are using more than a single "whole house" DVR to supply programming to other devices.  This is a bit puzzling to me because somewhere along the line I recall reading that only a single whole house DVR was allowed on the network.  Can you elaborate a bit?

  • Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my Canon Mark III 5D Camera.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my new Canon Mark III 5D Camera.  How can I get my files open to view and edit?  I am using LR3, Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3.  Do I need to upgrade these programs or is there another way to get these programs to recognize my files?
When I try opening the raw images in Lightroom, the thumbnails say "Preview unavailable for this file"  ... when I click "import" an error message pops up that says "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
When I try opening the raw images in Photoshop, an error message pops up saying "could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
When I try opening the raw images in Bridge, it just shows an icon with the file name and CR2.
    Please help!!!

Unless I missed an announcement, today, LR6 isn't available, yet, right?  Only Adobe employees and beta testers would know what LR6 does differently at this point and they're all sworn to secrecy.
LR5 is available as a standalone version.
    PS-CS6 is available as a serial-number-licensed version.
PS-CC + LR5 are also available as a Photography Plan subscription for $10/month with a minimum OS versions of OSX 10.7 (and probably 10.8, soon) and Windows 7.
Bridge is part of PS, not a separate program.
LR5 standalone and LR+PS-CC plan are both available on this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software.html
PS-CS6 can be found on this page:  Creative Suite 6 which can be found by searching www.adobe.com for Photoshop CS6 and clicking the Buy link in the on-the-fly search results.
As with any new Adobe software, it might be wise to run it in trial mode for a few days/weeks to see if it works well with your computer, before purchasing and finding out you might need a new computer, first.

  • Any ideas for security and parental control software yet???

Just received two of the touchpads from the fire sale and gave them to my kids, both under 10.  I am very interested in limiting the sites that can be accessed through the browser, as well as a few other things.  Has anyone found a practical means of doing this?  I'd hate to give up on this and switch it over to Android, especially since there is only Gingerbread available.  But, I just don't know what else I can do about these.  Any ideas?
    Thanks!
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

Please take this post with a grain of salt. I don't claim to be a security and parental control software expert, but I have researched these solutions and have some personal experience with them. That being said, here's some ideas to get you started.
As speedtouch mentioned, OpenDNS is a fantastic solution for website filtering. They have a great set of filters that can be customized and are one of the easiest systems to set up. Simply install an updater app on one of your desktop computers (or directly on your router if it's supported), configure your router to use their DNS servers, and you're good to go. I personally use this system mysefl and it works really well. The only downside in my experience is that there is not a temporary override system (at least, not in the free version that I use). An example of when this might be handy: my wife goes clothes shopping and looking at new bras. Every once in a while, a perfectly legitimate site might get blocked (in this case, probably something I don't want my kid looking at but perfectly fine for my wife). The option to "temporarily override the block" or "temporarily allow" the site would be nice, but it doesn't exist.
Another FANTASTIC solution that I've used in the past is the Astaro Security Gateway. They have a free home version of their "Software Appliance" that goes above and beyond OpenDNS. I haven't used it in a while, but when I did it was able to not only filter web sites but also monitor Instant Messaging and other online activites. It's a bit more involved as you need your own hardware (I used an old computer with 2 network cards and stuck it in between my router and my broadband modem), but the results are pretty powerful.
The downside to all these solutions, however, is that they will only work when the TouchPad is on your network. If they connect to a neighbors network of if the go to a friends house, all of these systems will be moot because they are completely bypassed. The only way to monitor that content from ANY network would be to install an application on the device itself and to my knowledge, none exist.

Intel iMac; upgraded adobe flash; bluetooth keyboard no longer pairs but magic mouse still OK. With Bluetooth switched on the screen splits into 4 areas and open windows seperate and shrink. Switch off Bluetooth and problem disappears and iMac works OK with plug-in keyboard and mouse

    Hi, Derek -
...the screen splits into 4 areas and open windows seperate and shrink.
Sounds like Spaces is being activated somehow. With the wired keyboard and mouse in use, select the Exposé & Spaces control pane in System Preferences, click the choice in that pane for Spaces. See what the settings are. There are some activation settings in that pane - by default, F8 activates it.
It could be that the bluetooth keyboard has some stuck keys and is activating Spaces; or that the activation command has somehow been reset to something that the bluetooth mouse, or bluetooth itself, is triggering.

  • Lightroom preview and JPG color difference.

I'm a Photographer. Using Windows Vista and a brand new Dell 24" HC LCD monitor. Freshly calibrated with a MonacoOPTIX calibration kit. The profile generated is my default monitor profile. After calibration, I looked at some of my past photographic work and the colors looked very saturated to me. And the images all looked a bit brighter as well. I was working in an uncalibrated environment before so I figured thats why my pictures looked different. I shoot in RAW (Canon) and I always (and still do) export all of my work as sRGB.
Yesterday I was working on a personal image and noticed my preview in Lightroom looks a bit different than the output in JPG. I verified my settings and I am outputting to sRGB. I'm expecting my preview and and the JPG to match almost exactly.
    See the screenshot here: http://lifesharephoto.smugmug.com/photos/256400141_Qy7np-L-1.jpg
Notice the web version is much brighter and more staurated?
    Why would that be?

Lou, you are using a non-managed browser. No matter how much you calibrate, it will not show you correct color, even if you use sRGB. This is because your monitor's gamut will differ slightly from sRGB. IE7 is not color managed, even though Microsoft promised it would be a long time ago. Currently only Safari is color managed. Firefox 3.0 beta can color manage if you enable it in the settings. There is unfortunately nothing you can do about it and you have to realize that even if you do everything right, your audience will see different colors. They will all cluster around what you saw in Lightroom though and you should absolutely not trust your IE7 display, even if you calibrate. Only your monitor has that specific response. Other people will see more saturated greens, or more saturated blues, or the opposite. There is no predicting. It will all cluster more or less around sRGB though.
