Limited remote administration

I'm not sure how to appropriately title this, nor how to approach it.
Basically the situation is like so:
I have a server, which is host to a variety of services; from httpd, to remote gui's for specific tasks on the server; I have remote and local access to all of this, and all of the information stored on the server, including client files, server configuration, and super user.
I have a partner, who only needs access to specific portions of the server.
For example,
My partner needs to be able to access /srv/folder/, preferably as his home directory, though not a gotcha really. This person also needs to be able to remotely execute specific commands, within the scope of the services he requires access to, i.e. sudo systemctl start/stop/restart service
I know I can easily limit him via sudoers by creating a new group, and telling sudo to allow users of said group to execute the above commands.
However, how can I limit the scope of the filesystem he is able to access, I don't want him having access to anything outside of /srv/folder, other than potentially a home folder with limited storage.
Furthermore, how can I limit the availability of commands, for example, lets say he shouldn't need more than:
cp
mv
rm
mkdir
ls
tmux
How can I restrict access to this level?
Most of the access will be via ssh obviously.
Mostly, this is to avoid as much potential human error as possible. I trust myself with the server, but I'm not sure I trust the expertise of my colleague, as Linux is somewhat foreign to him. Backup systems are in place, and everything is redundant, but I shouldn't need to rely on backups, and training shouldn't take place on a live system.

Effectively, yes.
I don't want them able to browse around system files and such freely, nor modify them or use them.
A small set of applications under /usr/bin and a quota'd $HOME as well as access to /srv/folder (multiple occurences here, but not all /srv directories)
I didn't figure it would be horrendously easy either... maybe it would be possible by aliasing all `unavailable` commands to
echo "This user is not permitted to use that command."
or something along those lines.
I've done some reading, and aside from what I suggested above, it seems the only other possible routes are a chroot jail and similar other options. I may try the chroot option and see if that jails him well enough to $home, and then see about making $HOME /srv/, and then explicitly add this user to a restricted group, which will only have r/w access to particular directories. Then, by limiting the restricted group to only execute specific commands via sudoers, I think it should effectively accomplish preventing any uneccesary damage.

  • Hyper-V Cluster went wacky, ERROR_TIMEOUT (1460), Remote Administration, Remote Registry

Each Hyper-V host is a Windows 2012 Server
Each host is Connected to a Dell Powervault MD3260 via Dual SAS Cables.
We started getting Errors similar to the Following:
    Log Name: System
    Source: Microsoft-Windows-FailoverClustering
    Date: 9/22/2014 12:01:24 PM
    Event ID: 5142
    Task Category: Cluster Shared Volume
    Level: Error
    Keywords:
    User: SYSTEM
    Computer: SVR-HBG-VM4.HAYDON-MILL.COM
    Description:
Cluster Shared Volume 'VSVR_File_Data' ('VSVR_File_Data') is no longer accessible from this cluster node because
of error 'ERROR_TIMEOUT(1460)'. Please troubleshoot this node's connectivity to the storage device and network connectivity.
The CSV Resources that were giving the Timeout Errors were all managed on one specific host, other CSVs on the Powervault were all working fine form the Host reporting the timeout error.
Each of the Host then started to have issues with timeouts to other CSV.   Dell Tech Support interrogated the Powervault and found no issued with the Connectivity and no events were present on the Powervault indicating an issue.
Each of the Host would then hand in Explorer, the Task bar would have no icons in the task bar and turn to hourglass when moving mouse to it.
Failover Cluster Manager would sometimes work, then stop working, It would not update the status of the VMs. They would jsut stay at "Loading..." Hyper-V Manager would have similar issues.
We ended up Shutting down all of the VMs and the Cluster and then bringing it back online. Though in the Process we had to tweak some things, the DNS settings on the Hosts were pointing to a VM that was Offline that was fixed. We could not reconnect to the
cluster after we turned on the Hosts.  We were getting RPC server unavailable.
I ended up turning off the Firewalls, resetting the NICs and things started to get better.
8 Minutes prior to the Issues did make a few GPO Changes.
Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote Desktop Exception Domain Profile
    was 10.0.0.0/8
    Changed to 10.0.0.0/8,10.1.0.0/16
Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote Desktop Exception Standard Profile
    10.1.0.0/16, localsubnet
Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote administration Exception Domain Profile
    was localsubnet,10.0.0.0/8
    Changed to localsubnet,10.0.0.0/8,10.1.0.0/16
Windows Firewall: Allow inbound Remote administration Exception Standard Profile
    10.1.0.0/16, localsubnet
    Remote Registry Service
    Set to Manual Start
So my Question is, could these changes of Affected the Hyper-V Hosts in the Cluster?
    Thanks!
       Scott<-

I guess I don't see why what I did caused this?  The only Change that should of been a Limitation was the Remote Registry set to Manual. If the service on the Clusters was set to Automatic and I set it to Manual, I could see that happening. I removed
that setting in the GPO, though I never altered the service on the Cluster Hosts afterwards.
I Guess if in the Setup of the Cluster Hosts it Changed the Inbound Rules in the Firewall and then I limited them further, though I allowed the LocalSubnet and all of the Hosts are in the local subnet. 10.1.0.0/16.
One Host finally came back online and was able to start VMs and Connect to the cluster without stopping the firewall. Its firewall was only turned off later to match the other three hosts.
Do the Cluster Hosts use the ports for Remote Administration to Communicate to each other?
Here is another thought, Do they communicate to each other via the Management Port or the Redundant Network Link?  the Redundant Channel Link is in 10.99.0.0/24  Though Each of the changes I made had either
10.0.0.0/8 which should be a super-set of 10.99.0.0/24 or it had LocalSubnet, which should be 10.99.0.0/24
I just want to be sure that was really the cause and turning off the firewalls was not just masking another issue.
    Thanks,

  • I want to get my parents setup with an imac and iPad.  They are elderly and we live in different countries.  I want to know what solution exists so I can be the remote administrator to maintain and keep them up and running .. I dont want anything fancy.

I would like to setup my eldery parents with an imac and ipad which I know will greatly help them in their daily life.  The technology they love to play with whenever I visit, but they can never keep anything running or sync'ed unless I am around.  Medical and other issues make this a real challenge for them.  Unfortunately, I live in a different country and see them maybe once per year.  I'm surrounded my apple products but never tried remote administration and wondered what I would need (software and hardware) to make this noble venture sucessful.  Anyone out there has some experience or recommendations?  I'm looking for something that is simple and reliable to implement ...

    JokerGirl,
This is Scott J, I work for Intel and wanted to try and help you out. Sorry to hear about your current PC and your knee!
I agree with the bigger screen. I have the Samsung ATIV Smart PC with a screen 11.6" which is great to watch shows/movies!  anything bigger is almost too big for a tablet (personal opinion).
Yes, most if not all tablets will have speakers and a headphone jack
    You can watch YouTube
Only certain models have keyboards, you will want to specify this when making a purchase. Note: most keyboards are sold separately.
Covers are usually pretty easy to come buy, as well as screen protectors (clear plastic that covers and protects your screen from scratches, etc.)
Depending on the Operating System (Windows, Android, etc.) you will have access to an app store where you can buy and download content. Alternatively you can access your favorite sites to read news, get books, magazines, etc.
Hooking things to your tablet - different tablets will have different ports (USB, HDMI, etc.) Question to ask prior to making a purchase as some do not have ports (iPad). Back to my Samsung, I have several ports and do hook it to my TV
Tablets can run anywhere from $150-$1,000.  The mid-range $400-$700 should fulfill all of your needs above and more!

I went ahead and reset whatever settings he changed, but how do I close this port to prevent this guy from gaining access to my router in the future?

whokebe1 wroteI'm pretty certain I didn't see that bottom entry the previous week. And if you'll notice, I can't undo it without resetting the router.
That certainly doesn't look like anything I've seen VZ add.
I have seen VZ add a UDP from from ANY address / ANY port to DVR port 63145 which effective blocks port forwarding needed for third party VOIP.
VZ recently encrypted the Actiontec config file.  However the config file for Westells remains unencrypted.
If you want to block access to the CPE Management port.
Save your current configuration to a file.
Open it with a text editor.
About 3/4 of the way down the file you will see the following lines:
    (cwmp
        (enabled(1))
    Change it to:
    (cwmp
        (enabled(0))
That should block remote CPU access.

  • Air Port Extreme Remote Administration?

Is it possible to administer the Air Port Extreme remotely?
My Linksys router has been doing OK lately, but have been noticing issues like speed latency.  I think this is true not only since another B or G Wifi device connected to the router causing the rest of the speeds to decrease, but also since I moved into a location that has many WiFi hotspots - specifically my condo complex.  My conclusion is buying a dual band wireless router which probablt has a larger WiFi range too.  I am debating on whether or not to buy the Apple Air Port Extreme Base Station or one of the top 3 Linksys E Seriers routers (E2500, E3200, E4200), since I have 2 iPads, an iMac, 2 iPhones, 2 Apple TVs, 2 Windows 7 laptops, 1 Windows XP desktop, XBox 360, Nintendo Wii, and 2 WiFi enablesd Blue Ray Players.  I saw that I was able to access all of the devices with the Air Port Extreme Base Station - great!    Air Port Extreme Base Station works great with all of the Apple devices, stops latency slow WiFi speeds and can have a USB hub attached to allow for a printer, multiple HDs [Time Machine Backups, YAY], etc.  I am leaning towards the Air Port Extreme Base Station, but have two reservations:
    (1) WEB BROWSER: I cannot administer the Air Port Extreme Base Station via a web browser and am forced to install the software and
    (2) REMOTE ADMINISTRATION: I cannot make any changes to the Air Port Extreme Base Station remotely, say if I'm at work, forgot to open a few ports and NAT/PAT, to access my computer.
I would buy the Air Port Extreme Base Station if I can at least get through one of these two reservations.
    Please help.

<Yes, the newer AirPort Extremes running 7.4.1+ firmware, can be administered from a remote location ... of course, you would still require the AirPort Utility to do so.>
I am looking to set up remote access to my Airport Extreme that is running the latest firmware. Can you describe what I need to do to do so?  I do not have a static IP so will have to use something like DynDNS I assume. My needs are pretty simple. From time to time my Airport drops out (I'm guessing after a power outage) and while the Cablevision modem restarts, my Airlort is often left flashing orange. This would be fine except that this is all at a weekend house that is 90 miles away and I need the wifi to be working so that I can access my Nest thermostat as well as my Insteon system for remote light management.

  • Remote Administration from Turkey?

Normally I would not be that concerned. This IP originates from Turkey though and to top it off I just changed my password about a week ago. According to this log, someone from Turkey succesfully connected to my router.  Well it does say ICMP which is ping or for the ones that don't know it's Internet Control Message Protocol but it also says Remote Administration which I find a bit whacky. I guess my main question is, why can't verizon block this stuff from their network alltogether? Why does the customer have to even see this stuff? Does anyone know anybody from Turkey, China or the Russian Federation?
    IP Address assigned to: TURKEY
IP Address: 212.156.0.206 is located within the following Network:
    Network: 212.156.0.0
    CIDR: 212.156.0.0/16
    Mask: 212.156.0.0/255.255.0.0
    Network Range: 212.156.0.0 - 212.156.255.255
    Total addresses: 65,536
    Jul 18 05:03:31 2013
    Inbound Traffic
    Accepted Traffic - Remote administration
    ICMP type 8 code 0 212.156.0.206-> on eth1

An ICMP type 8 packet is simply an echo, or ping.  The term remote administration is a misnomer and does not indicate a logon to your router.
Ping is a valid troubleshooting tool, but having it enabled can disclose the presence of a router at your IP address.
You can disable your router responding to pings
    - Click on the Advanced icon.
    - Select Remote Administration
    - Uncheck the box next to Allow ICMP echo request
    - Apply

  • Dpm 2012 remote administration - windows 7

    HI,
I am doing a POC with DPM 2012 RC.  DPM2012 server has been setup and is working so far. I am trying to connect the DPM console for administration using Remote administration feature installed on my windows 7 machine. I am unable to connect and getting
    the error as:
Unable to connect to <dpm server name with FQDN >(ID:948)
Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer.
I dont see any service being installed on windows 7, am I missing anything or any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Newspleaner,
I did fresh install of windows 7 SP1, then i installed DPM 2012 (RTM) Remote Administration Console.
Everything is working... I could open the console and connect to DPM2012 server with FQDN name.
Communication between Remote Administration Console and DPM server use TCP dynamic port. You should verify that you don't have FW/Router that filtrated TCP Dynamic ports.

  • Remote administration can't be disabled

I've seen a couple of posts on this, but none that seemed to be properly resolved. I have a wag200g, and remote administration cannot be disabled. I'm not a moron so please don't give me some copy paste reply telling me what button to click, as someone did in a different thread on this problem.I'm on the latest firmware, so nothing on that either please. The only sensible solution is to route all incoming on port 80 to a dead ip address, same as I've had to do for the inexplicably open port 443 - another dangerous security hole.
Seriously, I think this is a HUGE problem that you've got, since I found the same on someone else with the same router. Difference being, they hadn't changed the admin password. Hence, just knowing the ip its possible to login with admin/admin and cause havoc. The login box for remote administration even helpfully gives you the make and model of the router..........sheer madness.
I'd like to say this is the last linksys router I'll ever buy, but it's not. I'm going to get one of those old ones on ebay so I can install dd-wrt on it and not have to worry about linksys firmware (seriously, javascript, on a router admin page? you got to be kidding)
Anyway, I'm not really looking for answers, just wanting to register the problem in a way that hopefully might make someone listen

Hello, insaf_mohd and onlyregisteringtopostthis. I'm just your average network guy in the process of learning more from others, so bear with me on this. I also have a WAG200G and I've recently enabled Remote Access on it. Actually, I just followed the instructions on the link: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=58abe55b7a774a9181f60f2d1de937ff_4252.xml&pid=80&r...
I disabled and enabled Remote Management (Administration > Management > Remote Management)  just to experiment on things. So far, it's working. Can you guys give me additional insights on other steps to do on the WAG200G to optimize its performance?

  • What "ethernet port" does airport utility use for "remote administration"

I have a friend who was recently evangelized to Macs and bought a Macbook Pro and an Apple Airport Extreme (gigabit) Router, hereinafter called AE. The place where he lives has cable modem internet access and an older Linksys wireless-G router for the building, and I am trying to configure his new AE, prior to making it the primary router in the network (e.g. connected to the cable modem).
When the AE is completely configured the Linksys will be retired.
I remotely manage and maintain the network and some other computers in that house. The Linksys is configured for Remote Administration so I can manage it. I manage several PC's and Macs using Timbuktu Pro 8, with the necessary ports forwarded through to TB2 on those machines.
I am trying to configure the Airport so it also can be managed remotely, so from a workstation on that network (accessed from where I am using TB2) and running Airport Utility, I have checked "Allow setup over WAN" on the Airport/BaseStation page. Now I would like to test whether I can connect and remotely administer that Airport Extreme from Airport Utility on my Mac.
I assume that, if I can rout packets from my Airport Utility here through the internet to the public IP of the Linksys router there, I should be able to connect. But I can't.
My setup is this. The target AE has its WAN port connected to an ethernet port on the Linksys, as is the LAN in the remote building. Nothing is connected to the AE's ethernet ports at this time. The Linksys is the DHCP server, and the AE has an IP from it, as does all the other ethernet- and wireless-connected computers, printers, etc. The AE's wireless is active and the wireless-connected devices in the building can connect to either its base station or to that of the Linksys. When the Linksys is retired the AE will be the only wireless in the building.
I attempt to connect in the following way: On my Mac, I run Airport Utility. From the file menu I select "Configure other" and enter the public IP address of the remote Linksys, and give AE's password. There is a long wait
Reading the Airport wireless device configuration....
while Airport Utility tried to discover AE, and then
An error occurred while reading the configuration..... (-6753)
I suspect that my remote connection problem is due to the fact that the AE is behind the Linksys, and the proper port forwarding is not in place on it to pass the Airport Utility's packets through to the Wan port of the AE. This might be that I have not entered into the Linksys the correct port number to forward on to the AE. I've tried the three numbers in the list:
"Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products" found at
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1629
that are mentioned as possibly being involved with Airport Utility; 192, 4500 and 5009.
    Advice will be appreciated.
    Bob

One example, and there may be others, is the (free) DynDNS dynamic DNS service which publishes a domain name for the WAN port of your router which can then be resolved, like all other domain names, to the actual IP address of the WAn port of your router. This service provides a solution to the problem of having a proper domain name in cases where your public IP address changes over time. Unless you pay for a static IP address, virtually all ISPs change your public IP address over time.
So, you can register for a free DynDNS account at www.dyndns.com and that is how you come up with the User: and Password: information; use whatever User and Password you register at dyndns.com with.
The first part of the hostname you can define as you wish, subject only to someone else having used it previously, and the remaining parts of the domain name might be "dyndns.org" or one of the other domain names provided by the DynDNS service. So, you could publish, via DynDNS, the name of your public IP address as, for example, joehlam.dyndns.org however you might want something less descriptive or more vague.

  • Remote administration Airport extreme

    Hi everybody,
I Have two networks, one at home one in my office. I use apple remote desktop to go to "my" computer at the the office and vice versa. The thing that isn`t good at all is, that I only can go remotly to a single computer within the network, the one I forwarded the IP on the Airport extreme station. But from time to time I need to go on another computer. So my Idea was to administer the Airport express station remotly using the airport admin utility. I have a fix IP on both ends and connecting to the internet using PPPoE on both machines. When I put in the IP address of My AirPort station in the office using search other in airport admin utility at home, after mybe 5 Minutes an error occours saying that the configurattion couldn`t be read. What is the problem? Is it the PPPoE configuration?
Both Airport running on 5.6, Macs all on 10.4.3. For any help very happy!
    Greeting Stephan

    A few suggestions:
    - firmware version 6.2 has many instability issues, particularly on PPPoE connections. You should use firmware version 5.5.1 available from:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremefirmware551formacosx.html
    - it is probably best to try this without a router or firewall between the Mac you are doing the configuration from, and the internet
    - make sure you have enabled the remote administration function on the target Base Station (I think this setting is found by clicking on the Base Station "Options" button in the Airport Admin Utility)

  • Remote administration of small office via Internet possible?

    Hi forum,
I am a sort of "administrator" (actually that one, who is always asked when there is a computer problem) within our small office group. But I am also very often on the road so I cannot help my workmates personally.
Our office Macs are connected to the inside and outside world via a Time Capsule. I consider buying an ARD license, but I am unsure if this would enable me to hop on my workmates' Mac screen when I am on the road and want to connect via internet.
Could you tell me if there is a way to accomplish this without buying new hardware or a subscription service?
    Cheers,

If all you need is to be able to control another computer at your office from a remote location, then ARD would be overkill. Look into the freeware VNC. That will give you control capabilities and not cost you anything. You can find VNC applications for Mac here. Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 already have a VNC component to allow you connect to the system so all you'd need is the portion on the computer from which you'd be taking the control. Most people seem to find Chicken of the VNC still works well for them, though it's not been updated in a while. JollyFastVNC, though still in development, is another option that's looking quite promising. You will need to open and forward the appropriate ports (TCP 5900) to the internal IP address of the system in your office. If you need to connect to more than one system, you'll need to run a third-party VNC application, such as VINE, on the office systems to you can designate the port; ARD only uses 5900 which only allows one computer to be controlled through an NAT device.
Another option, if your users are all using Mac OS X 10.5, might be to use iChat. It allows screen sharing and isn't subject to the difficulties with IP addresses, network ports, etc. that arise when using ARD or any similar direct system control.
    Hope this helps.

  • Java program are limited as Administrator after windows 7 update

I have updated the windows 7.
The java program(packaged by InstallAnywhere 2008 Enterprise) can be executed when I login the system as ordinary user.
but the error will occur when I execute the java program as Administrator, please refer to the below error information.
(The java program can be executed correctly before the windows 7 update, so I think there maybe some new restriction for the java if login as Administrator )

The only thing that I can see here is that some installer is failing; this is not the place to ask for support with that installer.

  • Remote administration of Express in an Extreme Base Station network

I am a newb administrator of a small network of an AEBS with 2 Expresses in "extend a network" mode. I can access the Base Station over the internet but I haven't figured out how I can do the same with the Expresses.
Also, I understand that MAC filtering is unavailable for the Expresses in "ext a net" mode. Is this correct? It seems to be operational for the Base Station but even restricted MAC addys can access the network through the Expresses

    On this same topic;
We have a new Extreme base station that connects 1 MBP, (wirelessly), 1 HP Laptop (wirelessly) and 2 PC (via ethernet) to the internet.
All of the computers can see and use the Extreme base station and the printer connected to it via USB.
We also have an Airport Express that the two laptops can see. This has a printer connected to it as well via USB. (both are new Canon printers and all of the software for each, and their drivers are loaded on all computers).
Both the Extreme and Express have a steady green light, their own names and are set up on the same network.
Though my MBP can see both the Extreme and Express, neither "see" each other as far as I can tell. And, the printer connected to the Express cannot be seen in either Bonjour Printers, or anywhere else.
Also, in order to "attempt" to find the printer connected to the Express, I have to disconnect from the Extreme Base Station and connect to the Express.
How can I get the printer (connected to the Express) to show up in my pick list of printers WITHOUT having to disconnect from the Extreme and connect to the Express. Also, how can we get the Express to be connected to the internet via the Extreme?
All searches here and documents I have poured though do not address this issue and we'd really like to get this straightened out. I am willing to take a lot of time to do this, but do it right.
Can someone please help me with this?
    Thank you in advance,
    ~ J

  • How can I get remote administration  to work?

I had remote admin working just fine under Snow Leopard, but since upgrading to Lion, I can't access my machine remotely.  I've tried the open source VNC client from a PC, and the Mocha VNC app from my iPad.  I've confirmed that the VNC password is correct, that my network firewall allows VNC, but when I try to connect, the client just churns and eventually times out.  Thanks in advance for any help!

  • ARD Newbie - Remote administration/screen sharing

    Here is the setup:
Admin: OS 10.5.8, ARD 3.3, Connected via Airport Express (802.11g)
Client: OS 10.5.8, Remote Management/Login enabled in System Preferences, Connected via Airport Express (802.11n), NAT enabled/ports mapped for ARD.
I still cannot connect to client's Mac via ARD. I choose File> Add By Address in ARD and provide the client's IP as well as User/Pass. ARD fails to verify.
Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Nevermind; wasn't forwarding to the right address. Works now.
