Limited to one display mode with new nvidia drivers

I have a problem with nvidia drivers after 8178
I can get any display mode to work as long as i specify only one mode.
If i enter more modes in my xorg.conf, it will ignore all those modes and revert back to nvidia-auto-select (wich is 1024x768 in my case)
Anyway, i'm not able to change resolutions using xrandr for example. I need this for some applications that require to run in a different display mode ( old windows games i run using wine for example)
When i run X -logverbose 5 it becomes clear that all my monitor's supported modes are in the display pool.
I have also put in gtp generated modelines for all the modes i might need.
I really need a solution to this as i will probably no longer be able to use 8178 when xorg7.1 hits current.
This is what i have in my xorg.conf:

  • JRE 1.3.1_02 does not work with new Nvidia drivers - HELP!

I am a user and not a developer but this problem really does bite the big one. I have had installed JRE 1.3.1 and have used it to run LimeWire file sharing program for a long time (LimeWire is a java program from www.limewire.com) and also use it to see java applets on web pages in IE 6.
I have since upgraded my Nvidia video drivers to version 2.8.3.2 which is the latest official release at this time from Nvidia. Since doing this I have no java at all anymore. Limewire refuses to run at all and there is an error report generated in it's resident directory. If I go to http://java.sun.com, IE hangs and then dissappears, leaving a bug report on my desktop. It seems that JRE does not like the new NT OpenGL dll at all in the new Nvidia drivers and will not run at all. The dll that causes the problem is:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvoglnt.dll
I upgraded JRE to version 1.3.1_02 because Sun says this is the latest version and runs on XP which is what I have. Still java does not run at all anymore and I get the same bug reports. Has anyone found a workaround for this problem? This really stinks because now I cannot use LimeWire at all and if any web page has java on it, it dissappears right away and there is no more browser on my desktop. The only way I can even visit http://java.sun.com is if I use a Java blocking applet to filter out java applets on web pages.
Please address this issue in JRE development and release a patch for it or a workaround.
    Thank you for reading this.

    Chuck,
I stumbled in here looking for help, I am a PC user,
not a coder or developer (How sad. <g>). I checked for
updates to the Nvidia driver (none), Windows XP (not
at this time), and DirectX 8.1 (not at this time,
these come on the XP updates page so far as I know.)
    Not too suprising...
I have no idea of how to implement your suggestion on
how to disable the JMV use of DirectX overal in my XP
envornment. I guess that using Internet Explorer 6 to
see web pages with Java on them are pretty much out of
the question for now but I would be happy as a clam if
I could get my LimeWire application going again.
LimeWire is called via a desktop or Start menu
    shortcut in this fashion:
    Target Box: C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaw.exe -cp .
    RunLime
    Start In (directory): "C:\Program Files\LimeWire 1.7"
So it appears that java is called via the javaw.exe
file and passes a cp argument (whatever that is), then
there is a period separator (dunno why) and then the
"RunLime" statement that calls up the LimeWire
program.to implement the suggestion, simply add -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true between "javaw.exe" and "-cp" separating it from them by a space on each side. Your result should look something like this:
    c:\windows\system32\javaw.exe -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -cp . RunLime
    >
I cannot see any need for fancy graphic acceleration
or DirectX being called to play for this application
since it is basicly a file manager that shares.
Nothing fancy about it.It's not the application choosing to do this, but Java itself. Java GUI applications specifically those who use the Swing GUI classes (like LimeWire, if I recall) automatically leverage DirectX. This is really valuable for Swing applications since they emulate Windows (or Mac or Motif) GUI widgets rather than using them, making fast access to display buffers important to ensure best performance.
    >
Do you have any idea of how to pass your
    "-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true" statement to disable
DirectX into the above call to start java and
    LimeWire?See above.

Hanging by the edge of my seat, waiting for more input
on this. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

    Hiya guys,
JUst wondering if anyone else is having issues oc,ing there 6800gt with the newer nvidia drivers?any driver newer than the 71.25 version causes freezes and corruption and does not matter what speed its at even does it at 360 1050 but at default 350 1000 everything is fine.
BUt oc,ing with the msi 71.25 and below drivers it runs without error at 400 1100 temps are at 52c load 45idle,
Have installed fresh winXP pro, thought it may have been a power problem so i ripped out my 420w thermaltake psu and replaced it with a nice new Enermax noisetaker 485w psu with dual 12v:18a rails still no go,have tried every driver availible only drivers 71.25 and below will oc,all driver up toĀ  76.50 will not, also have tried coolbits, rivatuner, powerstrip etc..and still no go.

wow - this is my story also... I have been up and down the street with my MSI 6800GTs (in SLi) and they do not OC worth a damn... I am pretty bummed out due to the money, time, blood, sweat, and tears I have shovled into this rig and I only get stock...Ā  essentially... I have tried all the OC'ing utilities, different power supplies, volt modding... and I think it's got to be some bios setting or maybe the one piece GPU memory cooler design... the GPU and memory both heating this thing... I don't think it works that well... honestly... I have been around the net, on many forums... and the only peeps who have /any/ luck with OC'ing these MSI 6800GTs are water cooled... anyways... I have spent soooo much time on this and for that reason alone I doubt I will be buying MSI products in the future, but I would still like to find a solution which allows me to push my $900 worth of video cards to ultra speeds. Ā  I am really considering going with water cooling... but I really don't want to deal with the hassles of it right now... what I would really like to find or buy are some 6800 Ultras reference design coolers to install on my GTs... I think a lot of this inabillty to OC well is heat related... I know I can get 10mhz more out of my cards when my room is cool....Ā  I have a LOT of air on these cards... and good ventilation... I have my system stats in another post on this forum entitled "nx6800GT OC issues in SLi" or something like that.Ā  Good luck man, and I will let you know if I find a solution for this.

  • PE7 crashing with new NVidia Drivers

Just a note, I updated to the NVidia 191.xx series driver, from the 190.xx version, on my notebook and my desktop PC.Ā  Both crashed whenever I used the scrollbar to scroll down the effects or transitions area.Ā  I went back to the 190 series and it's fine again.
Just a note the latest 191.xx series drivers from NVidia caused PE7 to become unstable on both my PCs, both running 64 bit Vista.

Check out this thread, there have been quite a number of posts on various Forums concerning nVidia issues with the latest drivers:

Is there a way to use the iMac's display mode with a Mac mini with out logging in first on the Mac mini (late2014)
im currently useing my Mac mini as a portable computer, I take it to the university and use the iMacs there as a monitor but before I can do that I have to log in to my Mac mini first which means doing it blind

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.Ā
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.

    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and

  • Overscan missing from new Nvidia Drivers - Mac MIni 2010

So I was able to install new Nvidia drivers on my Mac mini 2010, however, there are no overscan options.. and my tv is connected via HDMI. Is there any workaround for this?

The final version of Appleworks 6 does in fact work on the Intel Mini under Leopard -- but Apple doesn't support it, nor ship it with the new Minis.
A free office suite that is MS Office compatible is NeoOffice:
    http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/maindownload.php
    a similar alternative is OpenOffice:
    http://www.openoffice.org/
There is no office suite that is directly compatible with Appleworks files, but if you install AppleWorks 6 on your Mini, you could export files in formats that other office programs can read.

  • So what exactly does limited to "one app" mean with a Pro account and the new prices?

So it seems Pro has dropped in price but it is now limited to "one App".
So what exactly does that "one App" mean?
Only one tablet version or one phone version for a certain title?
Or you can have a tablet & phone version including android & iOS for that one title?

I think that everyone received it just now…
Changes to Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, Professional Edition
Effective immediately, all customers who newly purchase or renew Digital Publishing Suite (DPS), Professional Edition, will be able to publish only one app per license of DPS Professional Edition.
Under this policy change, Professional Edition customers can publish an unlimited number of issues (.folio files) to a single app and distribute those issues based on purchased fulfillment bundles.
An app created with a single license of DPS Professional Edition can be distributed to any or all of the marketplaces that DPS supports, including the Apple App Store (and Newsstand), Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and the Windows Store.
In conjunction with this policy change, Adobe is reducing the price of a Professional Edition license to $4,800 USD annually (€3,600/¥480,000) or to $400 per month (€300/¥40,000) and will include 1,000 fulfillments annually. The number of fulfillments included with a monthly subscription remain unchanged.
This policy does not apply to test or demo apps published using Professional Edition. The one-app-per-license policy applies only to an app published to a supported marketplace(s).
If you are an agency, upon your renewal or purchase of Professional Edition, you can create only one app per Professional Edition license. If you have multiple clients for whom you are creating apps, either you as the agency or your client must purchase a Professional Edition license for each app published to a supported marketplace(s).
If you are an existing Professional Edition customer and choose to renew your Professional Edition license at the end of your annual agreement, these changes, including the lower price point and 1,000 fulfillments, apply at that time. These changes do not apply to your existing DPS Professional Edition agreement and take effect only if you renew your license.
DPS Professional Edition customers can continue to create unlimited Single Edition apps, which is unchanged under the new policy. A Single Edition app is defined as an app that includes one built-in or embedded folio.
If you expect to publish three or more apps annually, we encourage you to contact your local reseller to discuss pricing for a multi-year Enterprise Edition license.
Enterprise Edition offers additional functionality and benefits not available through Professional Edition. These include app customization, integration with back-end business systems, in-app marketing tools, targeted content based on user entitlement, and the ability to publish apps privately.

  • Use iMac in Target Display Mode with a Power Mac G4

I would like to connect my Power Mac G4 MDD (Model = http://support.apple.com/kb/SP63) to the new iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010) in Target Display Mode. That is, I want the new iMac to be the display for my Power Mac G4. Has anybody done this (including using the iMac 27 inch, Late 2009, which can also do this)? In a general sort of way, this sort of thing is described on this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924.
The problem: The iMac requires a Mini Displayport connection. The PowerMac has ADC and DVI-I display connections and also came with an adapter for converting DVI-I to VGA. How can I convert/adapt to get the appropriate Mini Displayport connection?
Gefen makes a converter (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8913) that will convert DVI-D to Mini Displayport, but the description explicitly says that it will work with DVI-D only while my PowerMac has DVI-I. I know that these are two different, incompatible connections.
Is there another converter that works with DVI-I? Or is there a way to adapt from DVI-I to DVI-D? Or how about a VGA or ADC to Mini Displayport converter?
    Thanks.

    japamac-
Thanks so much for your reply. You're right on target for what I'm looking for and that article is VERY helpful! If you don't mind, I do have a couple more questions/clarifications.
    1) First, I think that I didn't read the Wikipedia reference concerning DVI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface) closely enough. It includes the following paragraph. If I understand it and what you said, it shouldn't be a problem to connect the male DVI-D of the converter into the female DVI-I socket of my Power Mac. Right?
+The long flat pin on a DVI-I connector is wider than the same pin on a DVI-D connector, so it is not possible to connect a male DVI-I to a female DVI-D by removing the 4 analog pins. It is possible, however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female DVI-I connector. Many flat panel LCD monitors have only the DVI-D connection so that a DVI-D male to DVI-D male cable will suffice when connecting the monitor to a computer's DVI-I female connector.+
    2) I'm not clear on the difference between the Altona AT-DP200 and the Gefen converter. The Gefen converter is somewhat less expensive, so I'm trying to figure out what the downside is. The article you mentioned says that the ATP-DP200 "doesn't scale images", but that seems to only be an issue if I'm trying to connect other devices (PS3, Blu-ray), not if I just want to connect my Power Mac.
The description of the Gefen converter includes the following drawbacks:
+The only major drawback to Gefen's solution is no support for VGA devices or HDCP. A minor gripe would be the fact that the Gefen device only accepts one input resolution and only outputs one resolution (1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz). These limited options aside, the Gefen device looks like it could do the basic trick of transforming a DVI signal to Mini DisplayPort so that you could use your 27" iMac for a few more purposes, provided that the input signal carries the required 1920 x 1200 resolution.+
I'm not clear on what the practical impact of those limitations would be. I don't think the the lack of support for VGA devices or HDCP is an issue for my application. But I'm wondering about the statement that it only accepts one input resolution and outputs only one resolution (1920 x 1200) and the need for the input signal to carry 1920 x 1200. I take it, first of all, that the Power Mac can supply that input resolution. And, what is the impact of the device only having that resolution output to the iMac screen? That is, how would that look on the screen, ugly or okay? Finally, would the Altona device provide a better looking output on the iMac screen because it can apparently handle different resolutions? The manufacturer's description says, "Resolutions: all resolutions up to 1920x1200 (It is Important to select one of the resolutions that display
is capable of displaying, refer to your display’s users manual)."
    Thanks again.

  • Blank screen with new NVIDIA driver (256......)

    Hey guys,
A while ago I updated my arch system (pacman -Syu, I read the site beforehand), it was working beautifully before I did so. After I updated and rebooted, my computer turned on and gave me a completely black screen after showing a power saving message. After this, I tried reinstalling drivers, nvidia-xconfig, looking at various logs and dmesg output but nothing helped. I checked IRC and no-one had a clue.
I then decided to do a reinstall, thinking that one of my config files must be dead or something, and I backup my home folder regularly anyway. I did a regular install (from internet), got all my config files sorted out then rebooted. Same power saving message. What do I do?

Try setting your refresh rate manually. Create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf, and put this inside:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Default nvidia Device"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "TwinView" "0"
    Option "metamodes" "1280x1024_60 +0+0; nvidia-auto-select +0+0"
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
I generated that with the nvidia-settings utility. That's usually a safe refresh rate to use, but I can't tell what the supported rates are for you monitor. On another note, your 20-nvidia.conf is fine. Mine is only two lines longer because I enable SLI and manual fan speed control.

  • 2010 iMac target display mode with 2013 Mac Pro

I have a 2010 27-inch iMac that I want to use with target display mode for a 2013 Mac Pro. I have a mini display port to mini display port cable connecting them. When I plug the cable in the iMac screen goes black, but eventually reverts back to iMac desktop. Pressing Cmd-F2 makes it go black again, but eventually reverts back. I was under the impression that this was the correct cable to use to connect, but it doesn't seem to work. Anyone have ideas for what to do? What am I missing? Thanks!

You can use the cheaper single link adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/product/MB570Z/B/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter>
if you don't have more than two DVI or HDMI displays.
    <http://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202801>
If you will be using more, you can still use a single link adapter, but it must be ACTIVE, such as
    <http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B087B-005B-DisplayPort-Single-Link-Certified/dp/B00 4071ZX0>

  • Gnome stuck in fallback mode - not recognizing nvidia drivers

Every time I start a gnome session it is stuck in fallback mode. Checking under System Settings > Details > Graphics I see that the Driver is listed as Unknown and Experience is Fallback. Forced Fallback Mode is OFF. I cannot get it to recognize the nvidia driver (I have also tried nouveau but it did not recognize that either). I have tried re-installing the nvidia driver and rebooting, but I can't seem to fix the problem . Here are the logs that I thought might be relevant. If you need to see anything else please let me know . Thanks.

There is one thing I forgot to clarify, have setup up the pc as a server so I do not have direct access to the server. Everything is forwarded over ssh (using nx to connect to the server and start a gnome session). Starting KiTTY (a modification of PuTTY) with x11 forwarding I do not see any windows when I run "xinit -- /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp". I get the following:

I remember when I would start the pc that startx I could never get to run, I would always start the gui using gdm, which was the only thing I could get to work. I do not have a .xinitrc. I believe the nx connects and issues gnome-session to start the session but I am not sure.

  • Blank screen with proprietary nvidia drivers [SOLVED]

I've just installed arch on a new computer, and have encountered an issue- I can't get it running with the proprietary drivers, just nouveau, which is quite the handicap on a GeForce 660.
I used the beginner's guide since my last fresh install was using the arch installation framework. Everything went more or less smoothly, and I booted in to a working system- indeed, I can still boot into it just fine if I chroot in with my install media and swap back to nouveau. If I don't, I get the typical udev boot messages and all, and then it blanks out instead of going to the login prompt. It also does this if I uninstall both nvidia and nouveau drivers.
I've looked at some threads over this, and none of them seemed to apply. I've tried both current and 304 drivers, regenerated initramfs, and blacklisted nouveau.
One last bit of information that may or may not be relevant: at least one of the threads mentioned these issues being related to GRUB, while I'm booting straight from UEFI using efibootmgr- not sure if that could be related in any way.

Hm, I seem to have solved it by blacklisting i915, as suggested in the talk page on nvidia drivers for UEFI users.

  • Installing new NVIDIA Drivers in Windows XP (under Boot Camp)

    Greetings,
This may seem like a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Are we able to download and install the latest 9600M GT WinXP Drivers made available here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforcenotebook_winxp_185.85whql.html ?
I noticed the ones that came with my MBP 15" are 177.56, but NVIDIA has posted new ones, 185.5.
Can I update to the latest drivers or am I restricted to the ones that came with my MBP and Leopard Installation?
    Thanks!

I have been repeatedly advised by Apple that future Boot Camp upgrades may not install properly if users have installed different drivers manually.
I had experienced this myself on my late 2007 MacBook Pro, and I had to roll back the drivers in order to upgrade Boot Camp.
Many issues have been reported about driver conflicts in Boot Camp on the unibody MacBook Pros, and Boot Camp is definitely due for an update. For these reasons, I have chosen not to manually update drivers on my unibody MacBook Pro.
    I hope that this helps!
    Good luck!

    Hi Wilde,
Apple recommends to only use the BootCamp Drivers they provide.
However you can tryout these Nvidia driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforcenotebook_winxp_185.85whql.html
Make sure to make a backup of your Windows before installing them.
Or at least make a System Restore Point.
Some people use DriverSweeper http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/ to remove the 'old' drivers prior to installing the new ones.
    Take care
    Stefan
