Lingo "alert" causes script error

I've just started using MX 2004, and I find that whenever the
"alert" lingo is encountered, I get a script error which won't
continue.
I am working on Mac OSX 10.4.10 and compile my projectors to
.exe and transfer them to my PC.
Everything else works, just not the "alert" lingo command.
Any ideas?
Thanks
William Donelson

The alert handler requires a string so if you pass anything
else you will get an error. If it was failing on
alert ( "This is a message" )
I don't know why, but if you were passing a message to a
handler that wasn't a string then preceding it with EMPTY changes
it to a string.
ie.
alert( EMPTY && v_message )
or
alert( v_message.string )

  • Snippets cause script error when placed in different order

    In a new topic, I insert two snippets: SnippetA and SnippetB. All is well.
    Now I want SnippetB to come before SnippetA, so I move it (or delete and replace it, or any other method one might use to get the order changed). Now in the preview or compiled file, the topic gives a script error:
    Nothing is changed in the topic except the order of the two snippets and the ehlpdhtm.js file has never been touched.
    I have come across this error under many circumstances, and I have never been able to figure out what causes it.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    Sorry it took me so long, it kinda slipped my mind for a week
    The problem comes from the DHTML effect you applied in the snippets. I removed the DHTML effects (in HTML mode, the toollbar didn't work) and the problem was solved in the example topics you send me. It did work in the output however with WebHelp. My guess is that's because RoboHelp correctly applies unique ID's in the output but not in the preview. It didn't work in your output? What are you creating?

  • I have been having scripting errors that have not been able to be resolved by any of the measures listed on your Help page.

    I've gone through the Help list under "Unresponsive Script Errors": I don't have Webroot SpySweeper; I tried letting the scripts run longer (selecting "Continue") but they keep coming up; my errors come up all the time, not just on certain websites; and I tried disabling add-ons to see if they were causing the problem, but they weren't. I have also completely cleared my cache several times and then updated Java, since I've heard outdated versions of this can cause scripting errors. I finally tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox (a clean reinstall, with no preferences saved), but that didn't work, either. Then I downloaded FileHippo and downloaded all other the updates it detected as being needed for my system, including Firefox Beta. Could my low RAM possibly cause my continued problems? Also, are scripting errors related to No Response errors? I am still getting these, too, after performing all except the most complicated remedial actions for them recommended on the Help page. (Both these types of errors started occurring for me at the same time.)

    The error often has the name of the extension in it in some manner, '''supply the message wording''' then at least we'd have an idea of what you see. Plus we really don't know what you did look at, or what you actually tried of what you did look at.
    For instance "AVG Free" shows something like tavgp in the message, if I recall correctly, so they aren't always real obvious unless you've seen it before.
    But if you really went through some of help pages you would have tried in Safe Mode, gone through the diagnostics, and almost certainly gone through all your extensions turning half off then have of those on or have of those just turned off back on again and repeat -- not fun but it doesn't take a real long time, but I'd rather try other ways first, because I have a lot of extensions and many are already turned off because of Firefox changes for the worse, certainly not because I don't need them.

  • New Tab script error prevents other functions from working. How do I remove "New Tab" content (sponsored links, etc)?

    I actually found the settings for it in the top right corner of the page, but figured I'd report it anyway.
    Basically, the New Tab Tiles have been causing script errors (prompt to stop script) that disable a few navigation controls, like being able to close a tab. Any tab that is open or opened after the script error will not close. I have to restart Firefox for the controls to start working again. I have found that the tiles that have been causing the problems are the one's that Firefox provides, as it still happens when my internet history is clear and not loading any tiles from my history.
    It doesn't happen every time, but it does happen regularly. I just changed my settings from "enhanced" to "classic" and will see if this helps, otherwise I will just turn it to blank if its still an issue.

    If it does happen there are other add ons that block scripts like No Script.
    However for script errors, general troubleshooting can be found: [[Warning Unresponsive script - What it means and how to fix it]]

  • Firefox is slow to open and close. I get a "script error" that says it may be caused by a recently opened tab. What do I do to correct this problem. It is wreaking havoc when trying to open/close or move around the internet.

    I am getting a "script error" when I close out the internet, specifically Firefox. My backup internet explorer does not do this. This is slowing down the process of opening/closing Firefox. When I open Mozilla, I get "restore session" even though I have closed everything down. I have "removed program" and re-downloaded Mozilla 3 times and still this problem persists. What is causing it and how do I fix it?

  • Whay am I having script errors with some of my websites only on Firefox, not other browsers, causing the computer to freeze for a bit at a time.

    I keep getting "script" errors and my computer locking up while using Mozilla Firefox on some of my websites. I don't have this problem while using Internet Explorer. Why has this just started and how can I resolve this? I like Firefox, but will have to start using a different browser if this doesn't get resolved.

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

    Thanks for your input here. One thing I noticed yesterday in trying to resolve this (as I'm getting all kinds of errors with almost every program referencing this (Finder, iTunes, BetterTouchTool, SizeUp and Radioshift among others), is that I do not have the xmail.osax in the /Library/ScriptingAdditions/xmail.osax. When trying to locate online - as well as calling up your link - http://lestang.org/article63.html, it looks like it is no longer available.
    I'm not even sure why this is trying to be called as from my understanding this is a Mail Client.
    Here is a snapshot of the errors that are repeated:

  • How can I identify the cause of a Script Error

    We have a client who has been using Contribute for a few years and who has reported that they are constantly getting a Script Error message when using Contribute to edit pages.
    This message has only started to show in the last week or so despite there not having been any revisions to the site template (that I'm aware of).
    The message seems to be appearing when visiting most if not all pages on the site.
    I've looked at the scripts used in the site but can't identify anything with reference to MM_swapimage in Line: 1 Char: 1
    Can anyone give suggestions for solving this issue or at least to stop the error message from conatantly appearing?
    Screen shot of the message attached for reference.

    You can try installing IE 9. Since Contribute uses the latest version of IE installed in the machine as its embedded browser, this issue might be solved.

  • Bash script - send mail only if script causes an error

    Hi,
    I have a script running on a server for backup purposes. I use

    That depends on how you capture errors and how you call the script you are running. If you don't "exit" on errors, at least set a variable like "error" and, at the end of your script use something like:
    if [[ error ]] ; then
        /bin/mail -s "$SUBJECT" "$EMAIL" < $EMAILMESSAGE

  • IE causing error script error on production server with cfform (flash)

    Not sure if this is better posted here or the Cold Fusion
    Flash Integration category. I have a site on a shared hosting
    environment that has a cfform using flash that has several cfinput
    date fields. The datefields display and function properly on my
    development environment in both firefox and IE but only work in
    firefox on my production server. In IE I get the following script
    error:
    Line: 5477
    Char: 1
    Error: Object Expected
    Code: 0
    Does this have to do with missing files in the CFIDE\Scripts
    directory? If so can I place the needed files in a local scripts
    directory and point to them in the source of the page getting the
    errors? Any help with this problem would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Sounds like the /cfide/ folder is not mapped on your site.
    Ask them to make a virtual folder called "CFIDE" pointing to the
    real CFIDE folder.
    If they wont do it, make a folder yourself and copy the
    /cfide/scripts folder to it. If you dont have the files, install CF
    locally and move them up to your site.

  • Upon Opening and Editing I have a Script Error

    This Error Appears in my Contribute CS5 if I click through yes/or no I can make some edits and revisions but my Navigation on the top of the Tri-Oak.com site dissapears.
    VS

    I've been having the same kind of problem with scripts in my pages that work fine in every browser but cause incessant error messages in Contribute.
    And even if you do click "No" to continue running scripts on the page, it will still pop up error alerts for this and other scripts.
    Any idea how to kill off these bogus error messages? They are in no way relevant to what my Contribute users are supposed to be editing on the page.
    Here's another error I'm getting a lot.
    This is in reference to a third party modal window script I am using. (http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyphoto-jquery-lightbox-clone/documentati on) As perscribed on their site, in my code I have a block at the end of the page:
    <script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8">
      $(document).ready(function(){
        $("a[rel^='prettyPhoto']").prettyPhoto();
    </script>
    This references 'prettyPhoto' which is defined in the javascript included in the <head> section of the page as:
    <!--  Begin prettyPhoto  -->
    <script src="https://ssl.acesag.auburn.edu/main/jquery/prettyPhoto/jquery.prettyPhoto.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://ssl.acesag.auburn.edu/main/jquery/prettyPhoto/prettyPhoto.css" type="text/css" media="screen" title="prettyPhoto main stylesheet" charset="utf-8" />
    <!-- End prettyPhoto  -->
    Again, the script works fine, without any errors, in Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, & even IE 8-10 on Windows, Chrome, Firefox, Safari on Mac, Safari on iOS, Chrome and Firefox on Android. I'm running Contribute 6.5 on Windows 8 but have seen the same errors in older versions of Contribute. I had one user with Contribute CS4 having the exact same errors.
    These scripts are included in the standard templates used throughout the ACES website (http://www.aces.edu/). So this is something that causes a lot of anoyance for a lot of our users who maintain pages through Contribute.
    I'd really appreciate any help or insight anyone can offer on this. Thanks.

  • Alert causes key focus loss

    _player.alert("") causes lingo key handlers to lose focus in
    a shockwave window. The alert comes up, hit OK, but then the

    Hi Howard,
    the session state for Page Items are set on submit, that is why the lower part of your question works.
    I would create an ITEM (in my example P11_ERROR),
    and then create 2 dynamic actions:
    1.) Execute PL/SQL Code when Lose Focus on Item TCKT_ID
    Code:
    DECLARE
    lv_counter NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    SELECT count(*)
    INTO lv_counter
    FROM your_tckt_table
    WHERE tckid = :TCKT_ID;
    IF lv_counter > 0 THEN
       :P11_ERROR := 'ERROR';
    ELSE
       :P11_ERROR := NULL;
    END IF;
    END;
    Page_items to Submit: TCKT_ID
    Page Items to Return: P11_ID
    2.) a Dynamic Action wich Alerts the Error:
    on Change of Item P11_ERROR Condition: when ITEM IS NOT NULL
    Action: Alert "Error! ID does already exist!"
    Works for me :-)
