Linking two remote Macs

I have a basic question about linking two remote Macs over the internet. Here's the situation...
I live in Maryland and my brother in South Carolina. We would like to be able to exchange large files easily. I've managed to do this using sftp from the terminal, but what I would really love is if I could get his remote disk to show up as a folder on my desktop (in the Finder).
Is there a way to do this (that isn't too expensive)?
Eric

Is there a way to do this (that isn't too expensive)?
This method is free, I am assuming that as you have been using sftp your also familiar with SSH.
You can mount an afp volume over the internet through an SSH tunnel.
Turn on file sharing on the remote mac. Then you can ssh into it using a listening port. here is the syntax
ssh user@server -L 5548:127.0.0.1:548
Then once the tunnel is connected you choose from your finder 'command +k' amd in the connect to server window use
afp://localhost:5548
This will then prompt you to login and then the sharepoint will mount on your desktop as if it were a local volume.
The only issue you have is that the finder can become very slow and unresponsive when using network volumes over low bandwidth.

    Hello Boardman99,
It sounds like after a recent update you are no longer able to send mail, but receiving it works without issue.
I would start with the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Mail
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3899
Try these basic troubleshooting steps first
Tap Safari and attempt to load a webpage (try any webpage). If you can load a webpage, then your device has Internet access. If you are unable to load a webpage, follow these troubleshooting steps.Try to use an alternate Internet connection if available:
    Try a different Wi-Fi connection
If your iOS device has an active cellular data plan, tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn off Wi-Fi.
If the affected email account is provided by your Internet provider, see if your issue is resolved while connected to your home Wi-Fi network.*
Log in to your email provider's website to ensure that the account is active and the password is correct.
    Restart your iOS device.
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Choose the affected email account, then tap Delete Account.
    Add your account again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • Need help in connecting to a remote Mac

As the Admin Mac, my Mac connects to the Internet wirelessly using a TIme Capsule. The Time capsule is connected to a cable modem.
The remote Mac, is connected by ethernet to a Wildblue Excede dsl.
I know the IP address of the remote mac (findmyip.com).
Also, the remote Mac has no User Name or Password at login.
What I get is notice that the remote Mac is offline.
Can someone lead me through a simple set up for both computers that will permit me to make the connection? Do I need to do Port Forwarding on the Admin Mac?
    Thanks

    Hi
One way to do this would be:
    1. Write a sample program which will read the username & password as command line parameters. This will authenticate this data against the LDAP server that you have setup. Once you have this working proceed to step2.
    2. Write a Java Bean with two attributes that will hold the username and password. Add a method authenticate user which will contain the code you have written in step 1.
    3. Create a JSP with username & password fields. Let the form post to the same JSP or a different JSP/Servlet.
    4. In the JSP use the <jsp:useBean> tag to create a bean coded in Step 2. The scope bean should be "request". Set the username and password fields using the <jsp:setProperty> tag. Once you have this , just use the beanId from the <jsp:useBean> tag to call the validation method.
Keep me posted on your progress.

  • Need help connecting to remote Mac

At my work location I have two Macs, a MacPro and a Mac mini. I have a MacBook that goes between work and my house. The two work Mac's are connected to the network via ethernet. I join the work network with the MacBook via wireless, and I am able to "see" and connect to the mini and the MacPro from the Macbook, and I can connect to the mini from the MacPro as well.
At home, I can still see the two work Macs in my sidebar in the finder, but I can only successfully connect to the MacPro from home. My connection to the work mini fails every time, and I'm stumped as to how to fix this issue. Any ideas?
Other details, the MacPro and MacBook are running the latest Mac OS; the mini is running 10.5.8

Well, I think I answered my question, or at least found one solution. I ended up using screen sharing from the MacBook to the MacPro and then connected to the mini via the MacPro to see the mini's static IP. Now, I'm able to connect remotely with that...would be nice to know why things don't work a little easier, as I'm sure I'm missing a basic setting.

  • Is it possible to link two or more accounts without merging?

Is it possible to link two or more accounts without merging? For example: give access for apple id [email protected] (obviously fake and is used by John) to apple id [email protected] (also obviously fake and is used by Rose). This would only allow access from one consenting party to another, for temporary sharing.
The accounts would be temporarily linked/paired in the same manner as a bluetooth device (device A shows the user a password to input into device B) except John receives password abc123 and Rose receives password xyz789. they exchange passwords and can use this to do multiple things, such as; pool money to buy a game, a movie, or a song album, or they could share an app or two with each other.
Is there any feature in apple remotely like this in any way? If so please let me know how I can find or use this feature.
If not, I would recommend implementing this in the future, if not the near future. There are a lot of people that would use it, and it could allow app designers to make more money, because people would be able to buy something by pooling their money. If you think otherwise, ask anybody who lives in an apartment with three other people, because that is the only way they can afford it.

You cannot merge or link accounts.
    Sorry.
You can leave feedback for Apple at:  http://www.apple.com/feedback

  • Linking two imacs?

I know this has probably already been discussed at one point or the other but I need some information.
I have an Intel iMac and a G5 iMac that both have Firewire ports. I do a lot of photography work and have many app open at once. I would like run Photoshop on one machine and Aperture on the other. All I need to do is be able to drag and drop from one computer to the other my image files. Is there any way to link two iMacs to do this. Obviously there is no way to control both computers with the same mouse and keyboard but I would like to at least be able to move files from one to the other with out having to do it over a network (router with ethernet). I just want to hook both computers together with one cable and drag and drop from one computer to the other. Any suggestions?

Target Disk Mode (TDM) effectively turns the Mac that is in TDM mode into an external hard drive for the other Mac. This will certainly allow you to drag & drop files & folders between the two Macs ... but only one of the Macs will be usable while the other basically becomes a hard drive connected to it.
It sounds like you want both Macs running as normal, but you want to share files/folders between them. And you don't want to do it via ethernet for some reason. Why? Networking would work fine.
You can directly connect the 2 Macs via an ethernet cable or via a FireWire cable and network them together that way, no router is needed. In both cases you would have to turn on File Sharing in the Mac whose files you want to share; and log on to it from the other Mac via Go > Connect to Server. (If you use FireWire, you also have to set FW as your preferred network in System Preferences > Networking; also on the Firewire pane, set Configure IPv4 = DHCP.)

  • Linking two computers together

Can I link two macs together so I have access to both but the other computer doesn't have access to mine?

If you own both and have admin accounts on them, yes. On the "other" computer, go to System Preferences, Sharing, and turn on File Sharing.
When the two computers are on the same network, you should see the other computer appear in your sidebar in Finder. Click it, authenticate with your admin details (from the other computer), and you now have access to its files.

  • Albe to get a script working on a local machine. Can't on a Remote Mac using AppleScript

Ok I was able to get the following code to work on a local Mac
    tell application "FileMaker Pro"
    name of every database
    end tell
But when I tried to run it on a remote Mac using Applescript
I got a syntax error of: "Expected class name but found identifier"
    I tried the following
    set RemMac to "eppc://10.1.2.3.4"
set remoteApp to application "FileMaker Pro" of machine RemMac
    tell remoteApp
    name of every database
    end tell
That didn't work, any ideas how I can use 1 Mac to check on another Mac's FileMaker's list of open databases
    Thanks

    Thanks Sherry,
This looks like it works perfectly
I am just trying to understand how the times work.
This is the snippet for a two hour maintenance window
     $a = Set-WmiInstance -Class CCM_ServiceWindow -Namespace 'ROOT\ccm\Policy\Machine\RequestedConfig' -PutType 'CreateOnly' ` -argument  @{PolicySource = 'LOCAL'; PolicyRuleID = 'NONE';  PolicyVersion = '1.0';  Schedules = '1D529B0010080000';  ServiceWindowType = 1;  ServiceWindowID = '8fa8c041-b6fc-4e3a-bd91-494af0e7f20d';  PolicyID = '8fa8c041-b6fc-4e3a-bd91-494af0e7f20d'; ` PolicyInstanceID = '8fa8c041-b6fc-4e3a-bd91-494af0e7f20d'}; $a.ServiceWindowID get-wmiobject -query "SELECT * FROM CCM_ServiceWindow" -namespace "ROOT\ccm\Policy\Machine\RequestedConfig"
The things change are 'schedules','ServiceWindowID' , 'PolicyID' and 'PolicyInstanceID' and they seem to change, even when the same time is set e.g. create a 2, 3 hour service windows
Whilst getting the string is easy to work out using client centre. I am really curios to find out how these values translate to 1,2 and 3 hour service windows. The SDK doesn't shed a great deal of light on the subject (well not that I could find)

  • Two Mini Mac and One Monitor

    Hey everyone,
Whats the best one to do? I have two mini mac and one monitor with a WIRELESS (Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse...
    Should I get a KVM or Network,etc?
Or what is the best advice for me to get?
Im using one Mini Mac for work just as Photoshop and Lightroom ONLY,
Other mini mac for play around, download, internet search, etc
both 10.4.11 BUT will get Snow Leopard soon...
    1.66 Ghz Inter Core Duo
    and
cant remember the other Ghz as its shut down at the moment but higher then 1.66Ghz, Inter Core Duo
    Johnny

...with a WIRELESS (Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse...
Do you have a separate keyboard & mouse for the other Mac? Bluetooth keyboards and mice normally can only be paired to one device and since the Bluetooth receiver is built-in to the Macs, you normally can't attach your Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse to a KVM. (If you have a non-Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse with it's own dedicated receiver, then it's possible to use that with a USB KVM. But those are mostly PC keyboards/mice so most Mac people don't have such.)
So that basically eliminates KVM as a sharing device for you. Leaving just something like screen sharing to remote control one of the Macs. You probably will not like the way Photoshop and Lightroom work over screen sharing, so remote control just the "internet only" Mac, not the Photoshop Mac.

  • Run Script on Remote Mac via Web Interface

I have a script that does what I want it to do (which is to select a particular speaker, or set of speakers in Airfoil - http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/ - on a remote mac).
I would like to be able to execute the script from a non-mac (actually a PlayStation Portable), so I wondered whether it would be possible to do something like this:
    1. Enable the web server on the remote machine.
    2. Serve a page with a link to the appropriate script.
    3. Browse to the page on the PSP and choose a link to initiate the script.
Problem: I have no idea whether this is possible with AppleScript.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
      Mac OS X (10.4.5)

It's possible. If the PSP can send an email form then you could set up a Mail.app rule that triggers the AppleScript. A more direct method would be to set up ACGI Dispatcher ($) to fire the script. I have that running on my machine and use it occasionally. There was a secret to making the thing actually work on my machine that took me a few months to work out. Hopefully you won't have that problem since now I can't even remember what it was.

  • Connecting Two Desktop Macs

I have two desktop macs in my home one upstairs in a bedroom and the other downstairs in a living room. Neither have a airport card but I do have two routers. I have a broadband connection coming via my phone landline.I am able to connect either to the net individually but cannot have both connected at the same time.
So now to my question. Is is posible to have both running simulataneously and to have them linked for backup purposes.
What do I need to do or is this possible by bridging my router?

I have a router connected to each mac and both are going into phone sockets in their respective rooms. I do not want to have a long eternet cable connecting both to the same router. The prefered option is two seperate routers that can run simultaneously and also one mac to be able to see the other over the net. The broadband package that I have with my ISP does not give me a static IP address if that makes any difference. So want I need is both routers linked that they can see each other and be connected at the same time. Any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated.

  • Fastest way to transfer files between remote macs?

My brother and I share folders and various file types through ichat at the moment, but it's so slow, we are both on pretty fast networks (35/35MB and 50/8MB) i can mount a folder of his on my mac (we are in seperate towns) by putting our apple ID's into the apple extreme section (i think back to my mac) and we can share files that way, but im confused as to why the transfer rates are so slow, we get at best 32KBs. does anyone have any recommendations for a faster file transfer method between remote macs. Thank You.
P.s. as a joke i always say that the rate is so slow because i'm on Cablevision's Network and he's on the Verizon Network, lol.

One option you can use is File Dropper:
    http://www.filedropper.com/
You copy the file to the site and it generates a link
that you can then copy and send off to the person
so that they can get the file.
Accepts files up to 5 gig I believe and is quite fast.

  • How to change iCloud password on a remote Mac?

I use iCloud and Back To My Mac (BTMM) to access some of the computers I have overseas. Everything was fine up until yesterday when I had to change my iCloud password. I now have lost access via BTMM to those remote computers as they need to have the iCloud password updated in the iCloud panel in their System Preference (and the Back to My Mac option has to be disabled/re-enabled to have it restarted).
I have remote SSH access to those remote Macs (all running Lion and in one case Snow Leopard), so I have a working SSH shell on them. But I cannot figure out how to update the iCloud password that is stored on those Mac via command line. I can reboot them if needed of course remotely, I'd just need to update the password used for the iCloud services...
Having someone walk to those Macs, login with my account and have them enter the password for me is not really an option, as to do that I'd have to give them both my Mac's account password and my new iCloud password, which is not going to happen :-) In addition, some of the Macs are used by my parents and in-laws, with their computer skill being limited to knowing how to open Safari and the Mail app. They wouldn't be able to help in anything technical.
So... is there another solution other than buying a plane ticket to go overseas and do it myself?

In case anyone wonders, I was finally able to update my iCloud password ont he remote computer. The key was SSH.
Issue this command to connect via SSH to the remote Mac:
    ssh remote_computer -L 5800:127.0.0.1:5900
This forwards all traffic from port 5800 on your Mac to port 5900 (the VNC/Screen Sharing port...) on the remote Mac.
Then open the Screen Sharing app from your Mac. From there, connect to:
    localhost:5800
This will actually connect you to the remote Mac, even though your iCloud password is wrong on the remote Mac. Now you have GUI access and you can login into your account remotely and update the iCloud password on the System Preferences on the remote Mac.

  • Two remote objects calls on the same php class

    Hi to all,
I've encountered a strange issue while developing with remote objects.
I've a mxml component with an init() method inside which is called by a menu.
When the init() method is called it makes 7 remote object calls which are bound to some components' dataprovider.
Among this calls I've got 2 remote object which refer to the same remote class. This because I have to call the class twice and the bind the result to two different combobox. Below you find the code:
    <mx:RemoteObject id="myFile" source="myRemoteClass" destination="amfphp"  showBusyCursor="true" makeObjectsBindable="true" fault="traceFault(event)"/>
    <mx:RemoteObject id="myXls"  source="myRemoteClass" destination="amfphp"  showBusyCursor="true" makeObjectsBindable="true" fault="traceFault(event)"/>
in the init function I make this calls:
    myFile.listDir("dir_1")
    myXls.listDir("dir_2")
then in the mxml code I bound the result of myFile to combobox1 and the result of myXls on combobox2.
The problem arise when I call the myXls' listDir method. When I call it I receive the following error:
    code:
    Client.Error.DeliveryInDoubt
    Message:
    Channel disconnected
    Detail:
Channel disconnected before an acknowledgement was received
The strange thing is that not only the myXls object returns this error, but also all the other 6 remote object return the same error above.
I'm not sure, but I guess that the error could be caused by the two remote object which call the same php remote class. If I comment one of the two calls everything works fine.
Do you have any suggestion about?
    Thanks!!
    Bye
    Luke

    Hi Jan.
    1) We have the 2 VO, each with 3 rows to fill in data. What I mean is that when i just fill in all the fields for the first row of the first VO, and the value of one of these fields is bigger than 50, then after the exception is thrown and the message is displayed, the fields for the first VO are duplicated and shown in the second VO as if the user had inserted them.
    2) We tried yesterday the validateEntity and a Method and Atributte Validator approaches after reading that white paper with the same results.
The validation is correctly done using any of the those methods.
I will try to reproduce this issue with the HR schema.
    Thanks in advance once again.
