Linksys wrt54g setup????

hey,
i am having trouble getting my Linksys wrt54g v8 router set up with cable internet. since i can't use their setup disc, i am having to do it manually, but i am not sure what i am doing. i have tried to follow the instructions online, but i still can not get the Internet indicator to light up on the router. i really don't think this is an Airport problem (at least not yet), but i just can't connect the modem to the router.
i know how to access the router using an ethernet cable, but once i get to the Linksys setup in Safari i get lost. i tried changing the IP address in the router setup and it says, Settings Saved, but then it kind of locks up. i press Close, but it won't let me go anywhere from there.
can somebody help me with this? i need detailed idiot proof instructions!

The following are typical instructions for setting up a Linksys router with a cable modem...
Typical Linksys Router Setup - Cable
- Access the Linksys web-based setup at 192.168.1.1 (or whatever address your router is set at) using a web browser. The default username is blank & password is "admin."
Setup tab
- LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.1
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- WAN Connection Type: Obtain an IP automatically
- Apply (if you make changes)
Status tab
- WAN (all the values here should be populated by your ISP)
DHCP tab
- DHCP Server: Enable
- Starting IP Address: 192.168.1.n, where n should be greater than 1
- Number of DHCP Users: n, where n should reflect the realistic number of concurrent clients that you plan on having connected to the router at any given time.
- Client Lease Time: 0
- DNS 1, 2, 3: <leave at default>
- WINS: <leave at default>
- Apply (if you make changes)
Advanced - Filters tab
- Filtered Private IP Range: <leave at default>
- Filtered Private Port Range: <leave at default>
- Block WAN Request: Enable
- Multicast Pass Through: Enable
- IPSec Pass Through: Enable
- PPTP Pass Through: Enable
- Remote Management: Disable
- Remote Upgrade: Disable
- MTU: Disable
- Filter Internet NAT Redirection: Enable
- Filter IDENT(port 113): Enable
- Apply (if you make changes)
- Leave all the other tabs at their respective default settings.

Linksys wrt54g setup issue

hello all,
ive recently setup a cisco modem with a linksys wrt54g i had lying around for a friend. i enabled the security (WPA/WPA2) and changed the name for the wireless connection. I restart every thing and i see the new name wireless secured connection but unfortunately a while later i see that the original unprotected 'linksys' access point still available. ive tried resetting the router and doing the process over a couple times. first by enabling the password and then changing the name and vice versa but i always see the unprotected access point show up again and again and its driving me crazy. i know its my router as well because when i disable the router both connections are lost. so basically my router is showing 2 names.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try removing the entire preferred network from the preferred list? If not then try to remove the entire preferred network from the list and then check it still shows the default network of the router “Linksys” or not. Linksys WRT54G setup crash.

Hi,
Today I wanted to install my Linksys WRT54G for a wireless network.
But when I tried to install the driver from the CD, the program crashed.
This was during the: 'Getting program information.'
I tried several times but everytime the program crashed at 14%.
On a other computer it worked till 99% but then stopped because I didn't have the WRT54G hooked up.
I really hope you can help me!

Linksys WRT54G setup on Laptop

Hello All,
I just bought Linksys Wireless WRT54G router and I am facing problem while setting up the same on my Laptop. When I connect the wireless router via modem the internet light glows but when I execute setup then It says internet connection is not available.
I want to know whether Modem is required for setting up linksys router as my laptop already have inbuilt modem.
secondly when I try to use some combination of RJ11 and RJ45 cable the internet link is not getting lit.
Can someone help me for setting up the same as I wanted to know what all the requirements for setting up this router in IBM Laptop R52

Also, I was already having wireless connection setup on my Laptop and I am able to access the internet at one of my friend's location who is using netgear. I am not able to configure my router...It always says internet connection not available try switch off cable.DSL modem and blah blah blah...
I wanted to know the hardware flow and then actual setup...

Linksys WRT54GS setup issues

Good day all and sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
I recently bought a computer off of a friend which came with a WRT54GS router, which I am having issues setting it up.
I have the setup disc version 6.0. I get to about step 8 and I am asked for a password, whichIi never set up. I have seen on here a few places that suggest the default is admin, but I am not sure if that is for a secure log in or the set up. Any rate, admin doesn't seem to work. I have looked elsewhere on the forum and found that i can hold the reset I can default the router's factory settings, but this doesn't help either. If it is useful,I have also cleaned the drives and installed a new OS (WXP), so I don't believe it is any lingering PC password type of issue. This is my first rodeo with a wireless setup, so any info that you all may have would be most helpful. Thanks!

You don't have to use the CD to set up the router. Just configure it manually. Follow these links for instructions, depending on your Internet Service Provider:

WET200 configuration to Linksys WRT54G

Hi guys,
I've got a WET200 connecting to a wireless router (linksys WRT54G) setup thru the WET200 site survey.
Does the WET200 need to have an ip with the same sub net as the network the WRT54G is connected to?
I have a laptop hooked up the the WET200 with a static IP. I cannot ping IP's of the same sub net on the network the WRT54G is connected to nor see anything on the internet?
WET200 connected to wireless AP WRT54G (192.168.23.3)
WET200 IP address = 192.168.23.8
Laptop IP address = 192.168.23.218 (connected to port 1 of WET200)
I can configure the WET200 via the laptop, but not able to see anything across the bridge?
Anyone have any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Yes, WET200 need to have an IP with the same sub net as the network the WRT54G is connected to.
Second, I have a couple of question like can you ping the IP address of WET200? If no, then try to make the IP address of the WET200 as automatic. If it gets the replies then try to ping the IP address of the laptop. If that does not get the replies then the WET200 is not configured properly and if it gets the positive replies then they are communicating with each other so try to change the cable between the WET200 and laptop.

Successful DSL Setup With Westell 6100G and Linksys WRT54G Router

After a week of searching I finally figured out how to get DSL setup with my Linksys router.
All I could get out of the Westell > Linksys router configuration was DSL downloads limited to less than 0.2 Mbps.   No matter what I did on the router settings that was it.    I had a second eHome router that easily configured and achieved the 1.0 Mbps download speeds so that confirmed Verizon and the Westell modem were not the issue.
So what's wrong with the Linksys router configuration?    I had the Linksys WRT54G router Version 5.   Checking the firmware it was the original release of 1.0.0.   (See your routers instructions which can be downloaded from Linksys for how to check your firmware).   I downloaded the latest firmware version for this router model and version number.    Following the Linksys instructions I flashed the latest firmware 1.02.8.   Now I had an updated modem ready to be configured for DSL.
Assuming you already followed Verizons instructions to set the Westell modem to bridge mode setup your router to work with it.
Step 1: Go into the modem typing its address... Default 192.168.1.1   leave the ID blank and the default password is admin.
Step 2: Go to the Basic > Setup screen.
Step 3: Select PPPoE and the screen menus will change
Step 4: Enter your Verizon ID (exclude @Verizon.net)
Step 5: Enter your Verizon Password.
Step 6: Go to the bottom of the screen and hit Save.   Wait and the router will indicate it was saved.
That's it.  All you need are the three entries above to get it working. Turn off the PC, Router and Westell.   Turn on the Westell, then the router and then boot the PC.   It should work at this point.    I now get the full DSL speed for both downloads and uploads.
The bottom line....check you router, especially the older models for updated firmware before you give up on it.

Linksys WRT54G V8 Basic Setup page problems

I have been trying to change my password and all the settings on my WRT54G V8 router today because I forgot the password, and I can't seem to navigate the Basic Setup page. I can log in (most of the time) after resetting the router, but whenever I try to click on a different tab (like "Wireless", or "Security") it comes up with the page saying "This Page Cannot Be Displayed." I'd like to be able to put a password on it (which I have successfully done before on this router) because I live in a college dorm and would like to keep my internet from being bogged down by other people using it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you downloaded the WRT54G setup software disk into your PC initially. Reset the router (hold in the reset button for 30 seconds), hard wire your PC to the router, and access the Linksys icon on your desktop. Just follow the prompts after that. Can't get pass "Internet connection" on Setup wizard for new Linksys WRT54g router

Hello everyone.
Well, I just bought (today) a Linksys WRT54G wirelss router and wile going through the Setup portion of the wizard (part of the installation of the EasyLink Advisor application), after I connect all the cables (in proper order) it tries to establish an Internet connection but comes back saying that no Internet connection is present. I tried powering off and umplugging the Verizon Westell modem I have but it still says the same thing. I even tried to get the set up completed with two other verizon modems I have but just can't get pass checking for Internet connection.
My ISP is Verizon and I use just a regular DSL connection using a Westell VersaLink model 327W.
Is there anything I need to do to get this going? I mean, the set up CD shows how to hook up the cables and everything so it really is not that hard but right after the "hook up the cable" portion it check for an Internet connection and that's were I get stuck.
Any help will be appreciated.

Your problem is that the Westel "modem" is actually a "modem-router", and it uses the same 192.168.1.x address space as the WRT54G.
The ideal solution is to place the Westell into "bridge" mode. This will convert it to a true modem (all router features are turned off). I assume you are using PPPoE (if this is not correct, please let me know). If so, then you will need to setup the WRT54G to do your PPPoE login, when the Westell is set to bridge mode. Also note that you must first disconnect the Westell from the WRT54G and from the Internet, before you attempt to place the Westell into bridge mode.
An alternate solution is to leave the Westell as is, disconnect it from the WRT54G, then login to the WRT54G and change the "Local IP address" to 192.168.2.1 , then reconnect your system. In this case, the Westell will do your PPPoE login, and the WRT54G will be set to "Internet connection type" of "DHCP - automatic". If all you do is browse the web, do some emails, and basic stuff, this setup will probably work OK. If you are planning more complicated stuff (Internet gaming with port forwarding, video conferencing, etc.) then be sure to use the "bridge" mode described above.

Trying to setup my Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router but having trouble.

Right, i will keep this nice and simple. I have had broadband internet for the past 10 days and yesterday i got myself a Linksys WRT54G Wireless router so both myself and my partner can connect our Macbook Pros up to the wireless internet.
But the problem is we cannot seem to connect onto the wireless network. It shows up when searching for internet connecting even when its is open without a password or with a password it does not want to connect?!?!
I can plug my laptop directly (as i am doing now) into the broadband modem and it works so i have no idea what is wrong? This afternoon we tried using a Windows Laptop and had the same problem. The wireless network shows up but when you enter the password that was entered on the 192.168.1.1 website it does not reconise it?!?!
If you can reply speaking English and not too much computer language that would be fantastic.

Since internet connection is working fine on the laptop computer when plugged directly into the modem, you just need to configure your router settings.
Are you using a DSL or Cable connection? Please see the links below on how to configure your router with your internet provider (ISP).

Once you are finished doing so and your laptop is able to connect to the internet when connected to the modem > router > laptop, then you are now ready to configure the wireless settings of the router for you to be able to connect wirelessly.

How to hook up a Linksys WRT54G to Motorola NVG589. PLEASE HELP!

Hello, I have recently switched over to AT&T Uverse and I am loving it. One thing I miss is having extra ethernet ports to plug in my desktop computer and my Xbox 360. When the Uverse technician came in, he installed a Motorola NVG589 modem that also has a built in wireless router. He also installed a VAP2500 as a receiver for 2 wireless TV boxes. The VAP2500 plugs into the back of the Motorola NVG589. 3 other TV boxes are plugged into the back as well. My dilemma is the fact that all of the ports are being taken up. I need at least 2 more ethernet ports free so I can hook up my Xbox 360 (my model doesn't have built in wifi) and my desktop computer as well. I told the technician this when he installed the system and he told me to go on ebay and buy 2 cheap splitters and split 2 TV boxes that are coming into the NVG589. I did so. It didn't work out. I called up AT&T and the guy over the phone said that was the worst thing I could've done. He told be I should buy an ethernet switch. I had my Linksys WRT54G (Version 6) router laying around at the time and realized that it had a built in ethernet switch. I want to get this to also function as another Wifi hotspot because I have an old PowerMac G4 downstairs that won't connect to the NVG589 for some reason (it says connection timeout). I am guessing that the wifi card in the system may be too old to connect to the modern NVG589. So, I need the 2 extra ethernet ports and another Wifi hotspot from this setup. I have tried multiple things to get this to work. The closest way I could get it to work was when I plugged an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the WRT54G to port on the back of the NVG589. I then plugged the TV box ethernet cable I had to disconnect into the second LAN port on the WRT54G as well as plugging my Xbox 360 into the 3rd LAN port and my computer into the 4th LAN port. This worked great for the TV box and the Xbox 360. However, the computer's ethernet connection ran very slow and the WIfi from the WRT54G was very slow as well. The Wifi from the NVG589 was slow too. I unhooked that setup and put it back to what it was beforehand. Is there anyone that knows of a flawless way of setting this up? Any articles someone can link me to? Ya, the install tech must have been sleeping or texting or something during training.... or it's possible he misunderstood you and thought your were talking about needing extra phone ports, which could be accomplished with simple splitters. You were almost where you needed to be with your setup, you just missed some steps. Connect your wired computer only to one of the Linksys' LAN port. With the Linksys powered up press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds (will need toothpick or unfolded paperclip). This will perform a "factory" reset. When the Linksys is fully rebooted, log in to the Linksys. Do not configure the "Internet Connection Type" on the Linksys. Navigate to the "Wireless" section on the Linksys and configure the wireless. Do not use the same SSID (wireless network name) that the NVG589 uses. Save changes. Navigate to the "LAN" configuration on the Linksys and set the routers address to 192.168.1.1 and disable the DHCP Server. Save changes. This step will kick you out of the router. Power down your computer and the Linksys, run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the NVG589 to a LAN port on the Linksys, then power up the Linksys, and when it's fully rebooted, power up your computer. You should be good to go at this point. You will want to individually configure your wireless devices to use either the wireless network from the NVG or the wireless network from the Linksys. Otherwise they make keep jumping back and forth between the two, which will degrade performance for that device. You may still notice a slight to moderate performance drop for the wireless on both the NVG and the Linksys because they will be competing for the same wireless airspace along with the VAP2500.

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad,will that work?

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

2 Macs on Linksys WRT54G, only 1 gets access at a time

I have an iBook and a Macbook, both connected wireless via airport to my Linksys WRT54G router/access point.
But only 1 Mac at a time can connect wirelessly to the Linksys access point.
Is this caused by interference?
DHCP is set to on, on Linksys with a maximum of 5 computers allowed.
Strange thing is that at my work we have a similar setup with multiple macs wirelessly connected to a linksys access point and all macs can connect simulateneously. So it must be possible

Yes, they are both using Airport and both set up as Using DHCP.
When the second Mac is turned on, while the first one was already successfull using airport, the second Mac will shortly flicker the airport reception to full reception, but shortly after that it will show no reception at all.

Can no longer connect to internet wirelessly with Linksys WRT54G...

I'm at my father-in-law's house. His home network setup is as follows:
* Compaq desktop connected via Ethernet cable to
* Linksys WRT54G, v3 (IP 192.168.2.1) connected via Ethernet cable to
* Westell DSL modem provided by SouthEast Telephone (his ISP - IP 192.168.1.1)
I set this equipment up for him about 18 months ago. His Compaq desktop connects perfectly to the internet, using the setup I described above, which I set up for him about 18 months ago. I *used* to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly (with both my IBM ThinkPad and my MacBook; my bro-in-law *used* to be able to connect to the internet wireless (with his Dell laptop).
For reasons we don't yet understand, neither of us can connect wirelessly to the internet any longer. I have called Linksys, posted to their board, and read other threads here, so I am aware that MacBooks have some issues with Linksys routers. I'm getting ready to phone my father-in-law's ISP, to see if they can help.
But... I don't understand why this used to work, but doesn't any longer. I would be very grateful for any help any of you great folks could provide, and I will gladly post here any detailed info on the setup that might be of help!

Actually the Linksys 2Wire modem works fine in OSX and when connecting via a Compaq PC I also have in the house. It is just on the MacBook running XP that it fails to "connect". XP see's the network but cannot connect.
Also, I downloaded again bootcamp and created a fresh driver CD, reinstalled the driver and received the same error: 1706 No valid source could be found for product Macintoish Drivers foir Windows XP.msi.
I looked at the directory on the CD and it appears that there are no driver files, only documentation.
I called Apple, got no help, called Microsoft, spent 1.5 hours talking to them
they were no help either.
I sent a messge to the bootcamp beta mail address informing them that it seems the drivers are not being downloaded with bootcamp.

Insufficient Bandwidth Linksys WRT54G 2.2

IChat 3.01 works fine if I connect my computer directly to my Comcast cable modem. When connected through the WRT54G I can text chat but audio chat attempts produce the dreaded "insufficient bandwidth" message. I updated the Linksys to v4.20.7. I have tried to open ports as listed in some of the other posts on this problem. I have selected Upnp enable, and Upnp disable. I have selected DHCP disable, and enable. I have reinstalled the 10.4.2 update. I have repaired permissions. In short, I have tried to utilize every fix detailed in the hundreds of messages offering fixes. Since iChat works fine without the Linksys in the mix, I am inevitably led back to the idea that somewhere I have a mistake in my Linksys setup. Has anyone got a setup guide for v4.20.7 firmware of the Linksys WRT54G that will help me step through each and every setting required to get this thing working? Or is this device just not going to ever work with iChat? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the WRT54G (Ver 4.0/4.20.7 firmware). I have mine configured with UPnP only which opens the following ports: 1024 to 5000 Both TCP and UDP.
Try configuring it only with UPnP enabled(Take out all of the port forwarding and port openings, Unplug your modem, router, and mac and then plug them in in this order: Modem (then wait a minutes or two),router (then wait a few seconds), and then your mac and give that a go.
Then try testing with a known working screen account. (My screen name is in my profile if you want to test with me)
I've noticed the WRT54G isn't real good releasing ports from UPnP without rebooting.
That's how I got my WRT54G working and I can now chat with both Mac and PC's.
