Linux 10g: large SGA on tmpfs and swap

hello.
i'm try to use large (more than 1,7G) SGA with tmpfs. oracle start-up and starting massive swap (in/out) operation (swap usage about 2G). What oracle placed in swap immediatly after startup ?
PS. SGA size about 2.5G, RAM 4G, swap 4G.
wbr, Dmitry

okay. i'm reboot server and this is result of free command immediatly after reboot:
oxygen:~# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3948680 270608 3678072 0 4088 214776
-/+ buffers/cache: 51744 3896936
Swap: 3212920 0 3212920
as you see, server have more than 2.5G free RAM for SGA.
Before buy RHAS, i'm try test Oracle on Debian. /proc/sys/vm/pagecache not found in Debian /proc/sys/vm :(
X not started on server at all, slocate too.

• Large SGA On Linux and Automatic Shared Memory Management problem

Hello
I use Oracle10gR2 in linux 32bit and I use http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/linux/LargeSGAOnLinux.php manual
for larger SGA it works fine but when I set sga_target parameter for using Automatic Shared Memory Management
I recieve this error
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-02097: parameter cannot be modified because specified value is invalid
ORA-00824: cannot set sga_target due to existing internal settings, see alert
log for more information
and in alert log it has been wrote
Cannot set sga_target with db_block_buffers set
my question is when using db_block_buffers can't use Automatic Shared Memory Management ?
Is any solution for using both Large SGA and Automatic Shared Memory Management ?
thanks

• Large SGA issue-- insert data is very slow--Who can help me?

I set the max_sga_size to 10G,and db_cache_size to 8G, but the value of db_cache_size is negative number in OEM, and also I found that the data inserting was very slow, I checked the OS, found no CPU consuming and no IO consuming.
The OS is HP-UX B11.23 ia64.
Oracle server 9.2.0.7
Physical memory : 64G
CPU: 8
(oracle server and os are all 64-bit).
If I decrease the SGA to 3G,and db_cache_size to 2G, and the same data inserting is very fast, everything is well.
so I guess if there are some os parameters needed to set for using LARGE memory.
Who know this issue or who has the experience of using large SGA in HP-UX ?

Sounds like you might have a configuration issue on the o/s side.
Check that kernel parameters are set as recommended in the installation guide
The first thing that came to mind after reading the problem description was that you might have too low SHMMAX for that 10GB SGA, which would cause multiple shm segments to be created and thus explain the performance degration you're experiencing.
A quick way to check if that's the case would be doing "ipcs -m" to see if there are multiple shm segments when SGA is set to 10GB.

• MySQL innodb_buffer_pool_size and swap

I have a few of my MySQL configurations located here
Based on this, I have an innodb_buffer_pool_size of 12G, but my data is 10G larger.
I'm sure that we do not consistently access 22G of data because a portion of it is just old logs.
However, for performance sakes, should I just increase the RAM to ~24G or higher?? because my swap is being used pretty heavily too.
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

What it indicates us how we can read buffer pool is using by db is good or bad etc...As size increase in column(size_for_estimate),you can see the reduction of physical Read,so if you can see drastically reduction in this then you should increase the buffer cache.
this advisory just give to estimation that increasing buffer cache will help you to reduce phycial IO as more blocks will be get from memory after incresing buffer cache.

• Satellite S50T-B - Adding RAM and swapping HDD for SSD

HI there,
I have recently purchased the Satelitte S50t-B laptop and have a few question about upgrading:
1. What is the recommended RAM to add (8GB)
2. What is the recommended SSD to add?
3. Are there any instructions to add RAM and an SSD to my laptop?
4. Will I void my warranty by installing more RAM and swapping the current hard drive for an SSD?
Thank you for your help

This notebook is listed on Toshiba page:
http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/satellite/s50/pspq8a-008008/specifications
- What is the recommended RAM to add (8GB)
The unit supports 16GB RAM, so you can add an second PC3-12800 8GB DDR3L (1600Mhz) SO-DIMM module (i.e PA5104U-1M8G)
- 2. What is the recommended SSD to add?
Its up to you there are different SSD drive on the market and most of the 2.5 SATA SSD drives should be compatible.
- 3. Are there any instructions to add RAM and an SSD to my laptop?
It looks like both parts (RAM as well as SSD/HDD) are not user upgradable since there is no separate access to the memory or HDD bay. This means that whole plastic cover at the bottom of the unit needs to be remove in order to get access to these part.
But as far as I know this would cancel the device warranty!!!
- 4. Will I void my warranty by installing more RAM and swapping the current hard drive for an SSD?
If you want to keep the warranty valid, such upgrade should be performed by authorized engineer.

Hello Halfback71,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.

My MacBook (late 2009 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) often runs VERY slow...beach ball of death frequently. My page ins (3.29GB), page outs (5.64BG), and swap files (10GB) seem extremely high in comparison to most other discussions in here. I don't know how to copy the pie chart so it shows on here but here's what it says right now:
Free - 176 MB
Wired - 592MB
Active - 843MB
Inactive - 432MB
Used - 1.82 GB
VM size - 198GB
The page ins and page outs have 0 bytes/sec in the parenthesis even though the numbers are so high.
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

You difinately need more ram. 2gb is the bare minimum to run just the Lion OS, anything extra will slow your Mac to a crawl. Upgrade to 8gb from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/
And you will be a happy camper!

• Is the only way to import large amount of data and database objects into a primary database is to shutdown the standby, turn off archive log mode, do the import, then rebuild the standby?

I have a primary database that need to import large amount of data and database objects. 1.) Do I shutdown the standby? 2.) Turn off archive log mode? 3.) Perform the import? 4.) Rebuild the standby? or is there a better way or best practice?

Instead of rebuilding the (whole) standby, you take an incremental (from SCN) backup from the Primary and restore it on the Standby. That way, if, for example
a. Only two out of 12 tablespaces are affected by the import, the incremental backup would effectively be only the blocks changed in those two tablespaces (and some other changes in system and undo) {provided that there are no other changes in the other ten tablespaces}
b. if the size of the import is only 15% of the database, the incremental backup to restore to the standby is small

• Arch Linux Turkish Community @ 8th Free Software and Linux Festival

Hey There Guys,
We'd love to tell you about the latest news. We were at our stand all
day long on the very first day of 8th Free Software and Linux Festival.
What we've done?
* We've burnt 20 i686 and 10 x86_64 CD images and created paper CD cases
and gave everyone for free. (unfortunetly we were only capable of doing
40 of them and 30 cases since especially the cases were so expensive as
they were the best quality available)
* Made some installations for people who needs help
* Printed nearly 30 Turkish installation manual and gave them with the
CD's..
* Created a "Arch Linux on Tap" concept and made it available over the
network! They is very cool though since anyone can put the plug in
and install Arch with our very new and fresh Arch mirror (that have i686
and x86_64 packages for core, testing, community, extra).
We'll continue to do introduce Arch Linux to visitors of the festival
and help them to discover the beauty!
We also have some pictures for you! Comments are welcome!

Yeah, that's mine! (which runs Leopard for now but has several virtual Arch's on it..) I'm working on installing Arch on it.. (is a 3-4 years Arch user by now btw..)

• How can i see how large an app is and how much data is stored

In ios7 I could select an app and see it's size and how much data is stored in using it on my iPhone.
I can't seem to locate that option in ios8.1
to refresh and app I had the option of deleting it and reinstalling before based on the information held by the app.
is this clear?
MyFitnessPal is taking a long time to load, thought I would see how large the app is and how much info is stored
but as I've redundantly stated here I can't find that option in my phone now.
thanks in advance for any help you can offer
iPhone 5 iOS8.1

For reference in iOS 7 it is under Settings app > General > Usage.
According to the manual iOS 8 is the same…
http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
(page 177)
Usage information
View cellular usage. Go to Settings > Cellular. See Cellular settings on page 179. View other usage information. Go to Settings > General > Usage to:
Display battery level as a percentage
See Battery Usage, including the elapsed time since iPhone has been charged and usage by app
View overall storage availability and storage used per app
View and manage iCloud storage
For me it take a few seconds to load, you may find that the app is being slow to open if it is still downloading some data for it's own caches etc. Try to ensure it has a good internet connection. Obviously it could just be that the service in question is also having issues, so consult their support too.

• MultiThreaded compare and swap question.

I'v got this assignment and I'm not sure which approach to take. I think I've got it right with my second try, but I was wondering if I could get some sort of verification or something.
"Use Java monitors to implement the atomic Compare-And-Swap instruction, which has the following effect: CSW(a,b,c): < if (a==c) { c = b; return(0);} else {a = c; return 1;} > (In most concurrency books and papers instructions within angle brackets < > means that everything within the brackets is done in one uninterruptible, atomic action.) "
Is this right?
public synchronized int compareAndSwap(Object a, Object b, Object c)
if ( a.equals( c ) )
c = b;
return 0;
a = c;
return 1;
}Or is this?
public int compareAndSwap(Object a, Object b, Object c)
synchronized ( a )
synchronized ( b )
synchronized ( c )
if ( a.equals( c ) )
c = b;
return 0;
a = c;
return 1;
}Or am I totally off base? I think the latter is right as it prevents the objects themselves from being messed with.

As far as making it an atomic action, you do that
with synchronized, BUT more detail might be needed
about the context in which it's supposed to be atomic
to know what to sync on.OK, thanks. I was thinking I was crazy or something, but his question is just unclear. I have no idea what he wants and I'm not sure he does either.
Thanks.

• Large file on fcpx and trying to export without compressor? want to eventually transfer to dvd?

I have a fairly large file on fcpx and trying to export it without compressor. I tried this and the .mov file was way too large to eventually burn to a dvd. Can someone please help!! I am very new to this program. Do I need compressor? Or when I share>export media is there a setting i can change?

Are you making an authored DVD or a DVD-ROM? If the former, the size of the file doesn't matter only the length of the video.

• XMLAgg alias: Inconsistent between 10g (10.2.0.4) and 11g (10.2.0.3)

Hi All,
We're seeing inconsistent behavior between 10g (10.2.0.4) and 11g (10.2.0.3) when aliasing a nested select statement that returns an XMLAgg.
Not sure if this is an instance of Oracle correcting behavior or if this should be considered a bug.
Sample query:
SELECT xmlelement("ItemData",
(SELECT xmlagg(
XMLELEMENT("Item", x.item)
FROM (SELECT 'item1' item FROM dual
UNION ALL
SELECT 'item2' item FROM dual) x
) AS "Items" -- in10g alias on nested select is used for grouping element name; however in 11g alias is ignored
).extract('/') xml
FROM dual;
10g result:
<ItemData>
<Items>

item1

item2

</Items>
</ItemData>
11g result:
<ItemData>
item1

item2
</ItemData>
The issue is the missing “Items” element, not the pretty print.
Alternate 1:
I’ve found that I can use SYS_XMLAGG together with XMLFormat so that it works in either 10g or 11g -- When using in 10g the nested select statement cannot be aliased otherwise a duplicate Items element is created
SELECT xmlelement("ItemData",
(SELECT sys_xmlagg(
XMLELEMENT("Item", x.item),
XMLFormat('Items')
FROM (SELECT 'item1' item FROM dual
UNION ALL
SELECT 'item2' item FROM dual) x
) -- Cannot alias in 10g otherwise a grouping element is created
).extract('/') xml
FROM dual;
10g result:
<ItemData>
<Items>

item1

item2

</Items>
</ItemData>
11g result:
<ItemData><Items>

item1

item2

</Items>
</ItemData>
Alternate 2:
Another alternative is using an additional XMLElement tag to create the grouping element “Items” (As above select statement w/ XMLAGG cannot be aliased)
SELECT xmlelement("ItemData",
xmlElement("Items",
(SELECT xmlagg(
XMLELEMENT("Item", x.item)
FROM (SELECT 'item1' item FROM dual
UNION ALL
SELECT 'item2' item FROM dual) x
)-- Cannot alias in 10g otherwise a grouping element is created
).extract('/') xml
FROM dual;
10g result:
<ItemData>
<Items>

item1

item2

</Items>
</ItemData>
11g result:
<ItemData><Items>
item1

item2
</Items></ItemData>

Hi,
This issue was discussed a couple of years ago : {thread:id=1093561}
IMO, the correct behaviour is the 11g's.
The Alternative #2 you mentioned above using XMLElement (or XMLForest) should be the only way to correctly deal with this situation in any version.
Just curious, where did you first see/learn that aliasing a subquery should create automatically an additional wrapping element?
