Linux-3.10.10 fails silently when booting with UEFI

This problem has occured for me on several occasions in the past (with 3.10.2 and 3.10.8) but that has been with kernels in [testing]. With 3.10.10 dropping to [core], this is the first time this has happened for me with an official release.
Though the linked-to thread is marked as "Solved", the only solution found was downgrading and waiting for a new kernel to be released that did not have the issue (3.10.3 and 3.10.9). I am using UEFI with gummiboot, but I have no idea why this is happening (and since the boot fails silently it's rather difficult for me to provide helpful logs). Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Have you found any workable solution that isn't just waiting? Can anyone else guide me in some troubleshooting?
All the best,

Booting directly from the firmware and via gummiboot are basically the same, in the sense that they both rely on the EFI stub loader. The problem under discussion in the thread to which I linked appears to be a bug in the EFI stub loader that interacts with the firmware version -- it affects many Lenovo computers, but few others. It appears when using the EFI stub loader directly, from rEFInd, or from gummiboot; but it's a highly inconsistent bug. It can go away by switching from gummiboot to rEFInd, from rEFInd to gummiboot, from one version of rEFInd to another, from either of these to a direct boot from the firmware, etc. It also comes and goes with the exact kernel version, with different people reporting problems with different kernels.
As I said, there's no real fix. The precise cause hasn't been nailed down; if it had been, chances are there'd be a fix by now.
Fascinating. I wonder what's going wrong with it.
If SYSLINUX is getting you further into the boot process, then I recommend you try to debug what's happening with SYSLINUX. Try posting details of any error messages you see.
Fair enough. Then, here's my plan. Given that this thread appears to be a duplicate of the thread srs5694 linked to, it should probably either be merged in or closed (I don't necessarily have any preference, and since there has been no new discovery made in it, it doesn't seem as though there is any inherent advantage one way or another). And, I will shortly open a new thread on troubleshooting syslinux.
Thank you for your guidance srs! You've been a huge help.
All the best,

  • Boot process freezes when booting from UEFI

Subject says it all.  I followed the grub2/uefi wiki to configure Arch to work with my new motherboard's EFI.  I can boot into grub okay and I can select the entry that boots Arch, but the boot hangs indefinably at the 'loading udev uevents [BUSY]' prompt.  By contrast, if I boot using a 2nd HDD which has grub-bios on it, Arch comes up without a hitch.  I must conclude that booting from UEFI is the problem and would like to fix it.
I moved all logs from /var/log so that the dir is empty hoping to catch something that would give a clue but after a failed boot attempt, mounting the root partition and inspecting /var/log gave no files.

Please check this Install Ubuntu without a CD using UNetbootin.
Also I think this thread is better safed in Linux section of this forum.
    Try a look there, also.

  • Getting white screen when booting with alt key

Hi, I've installed windows 7 with boot camp on my brand new iMac 27" on OS X Lion.
Everything works fine when I configure boot camp to start as mac, or as windows.
However If I press the alt key when booting, as per this tutorial http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/04/boot-camp-tutorial-install-windows-xp.html I get a white screen and that's it. Any Idea as to what might be the problem?

    Hi
Try resetting the Parameter RAM (PRAM) - pronounced peeram. Restart the mac and depress the P, R, alt and command keys simultaneously. You should hear the boot chime. Keep the keys depressed until you hear the boot chime three more times. Release the keys thereafter.
Other possibilities are: you're filling up the hard drive and you need to clear some space; a problem is developing with the hard drive and/or directory structure. You need to run a disk repair utility such as fsck, DU's Repair Disk coupled with Repairing Privileges or something 3rd-Party such as Disk Warrior.

  • [solved] no sound when booting with webcam attached

    Hi everybody,
hopefully this is the right section to post since I'm not quite sure if the problem is related to KDE or a general hardware thing. ;-)
Anyway, the problem that I have is that I don't have any sound at all when booting my system while my webcam, a logitech 9000 pro, is attached to the USB port.
Even when unplugging the webcam afterwards the sound does not work. I need to reboot my system first with the webcam detached and than it'll work again. I also did already manually insert the modules in /etc/rc.conf but no change. Every time it seems that the webcams audio interface will be recognized as the primary audio device.
When not having the camera plugged in and plugging it in while KDE is up, everything works like a charm.
But of course it bothers me quite big time to unplug the webcam every time after using it and rebooting the system again after I forgot to unplug it.
I also checked for other modules to be loaded automatically (compared the output of lsmod before and after plugging in the webcam) but there was no change.
So does anyone have an idea what to do in order to get the order of the audio devices right?
    Thank you!...

In your /etc/rc.d/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf try to put zero index for your audio driver, so it will load first. In my case it's this line:
    options snd-hda-intel index=0

I compiled my kernel with this line:
    # make -s clean bzImage modules modules_install
    Any ideas?

    Ok, I fixed it.
When doing mkinitrd auto it would make an initrd image from the modules at /lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH when it had to do it from /lib/modules/2.6.16.18-ARCH
    I fixed it with
    mkinitrd kernel_version=2.6.16.18-ARCH
Also my menu.lst was wrong, a new image was created under the name of
    initrd-2.6.16.18-ARCH.img.
My menu.lst pointed to initrd26.img. I didn't change it before because I didn't know, someone should update the wiki article about compiling the kernel from source.

  • Kernel Panic When Booting with Install DVD

I get a kernel panic when booting from the OSX 4 (tiger) install DVD. I am using a Quad G-5 with 8 gigs of ram.

Have to ask what version your Quad came with, whether same DVD you are using now. Apple now has Tiger DVDs w/ 10.4.6 for sale.
When booting, or when you get to the screen to select Languages on the initial screen (before you can select DU or Installer etc)?
How about Option booting to Apple Hardware Test and running extended test?
Did you run memtest or anything when you installed RAM (assuming you didn't buy it BTO w/ 8GB).
Any time adding or changing hardware, including memory, it is either a good policy or essential in some cases to boot into Open Firmware (command option of) on startup and type "reset-nvram" and 'reset-all" after installing. Same for PCIe or even swapping out disk drive (where sometimes a drive won't show up or allow you to partition).

  • Unable to boot with UEFI by bootable windows 8.1 DVD

Hi guysUnfortunately when I want to install windows with UEFI from bios, there is no choice for choosing boot from DVD, while my DVD is bootable and it is in my DVD Rom. On the other, by changing UEFI to Legacy support, it can recognize my bootable DVD of windows 8.1. I really cant understand what is the problem. Please help to install new windows through UEFI (((((((((Thanks

I think this is a problem with new laptops (as far as I know), you cannot boot into UEFI using DVD.
(Try disabling / enabling SecureBoot but I dont think that will help either)
You can however create a bootable USB and boot into UEFI.

  • Frozen system when booting with dual-head setup (updates)

    Hi guys,
I made a fresh install a couple of weeks ago and I configured my system for a dual-head setup following the wiki. I activated KMS and added radeon to the kernel parameters.
    My xorg.conf looks like this:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    Option "Position" "0 0"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "HDMI-0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    Option "Position" "1920 0"
    EndSection
I was having random freezes for a couple of days, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I hard rebooted my computer when it froze and it could boot normally that second time.
But after yesterday, last update to the open source drivers xf86-video-ati (1:7.5.0-2) and lib32-mesa-libgl (10.5.2-1), my system doesn't boot unless I disconnect one of the screens. When only one screen it's connected everything is fine. If I plug the second screen, it pops up the KDE service to configurate the second screen but as soon I press 'apply the chages' my system freezes and I had to hard reboot.
I've tried all possible combinations usingt different outputs from the screens, getting the same results. Two of them connected --> freezes after grub loading. One connected --> boot Ok, but as soon as I plug the second one and I apply changes, freezes.
I found one configuration that doesn't freeze my system. When I plug the second screen, as I said, KDE service automatically pops up. Before I was changing the positions of the screen, one beside the other one, and my system freezes when I apply the changes. If I just left the default configuration (one screen in top of the other), it doesn't freeze my system. After that, I can rearrange the screens, as I need them, and it doesn't freeze.
    Here it is my grub.cfg

Downgrading catalyst to 14.3 seems to have done the job. Thanks for the suggestion, marking as solved.

Sorry, I don't post often and wasn't aware of the rules on images. I'll keep that in mind next time.

  • Monitor blacks out when booting with KVM Switch in the middle

    Hi
I have attached my Xserve with an iMac G5 to a KVM Switch. When I boot up the Xserve the monitor blacks out after the apple logo.
I know that the Xserve tries to autodetect the monitor. Apparently it fails in its job when the KVM is in the middle. Everything works well when I remove the KVM and connect the monitor directly to Xserve.
Any ideas how do I disable the monitor autodetect feature - or something?
Xserve (intel) Mac OS X (10.4.1) dkvm-4u KVM switch

    Hi all
I did try that. No luck.. Strangely enough, I realized that when the server boots up, the login screen defaults to 85HZ refresh rate. I found a site that explains the plist file that you can change to force it to 60HZ. What is weird it if I boot the Mac connected to another LCD, then move the cable to the KVM, it works. It almost seems like when the mac is booting, it sends some sort of signal just before the login screen comes up, that screws up this KVM. Tried updating firmware, still in the process of speaking with the KVM support people...
    very strange..

  • HDD recovery failed, Qosimo wont boot with BOOTMGR is missing

    Hi all,
i recently used the Toshiba HDD recovery thing to restore my laptop to factory settings, while it was doing this it popped up saying it failed, I restarted and boots up to Toshiba logo then comes to a screen with just BOOTMGR is missing ctrl alt del to restart. Anyone know how I can solve this so it will work once more?
    Laptop is Toshiba Qosimo X500 - 149
    Thanks
    Harry

    Hello Harry
HDD recovery image is screwed up and you will not be able to start it anymore. Only way to install Toshiba recovery image is to use recovery DVD. Have you created one following Toshiba recovery reminder?
    Here is original reminder message:
    +Important INFORMATION+
+Your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. If you need to repair your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer" and follow the menue instructions) or create a bootable Recovery Disc Medium for this purpose.+
+*Toshiba recommends you to create Recovery Disc Medium using the "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator" to ensure that you are able to restore your computer to the original factory installed state, even if your computer gets seriously damaged.*+

  • No screen displayed when booting with options key held down

When I hold the option key down to select which OS I want to boot into I am getting nothing displayed on the screen but the booting has paused waiting for my input because I can use the cursor keys and return to get the system to boot.
Anyone got any ideas as to why I cant see the choices?
    Thanks
    Gary

Just a quick follow up on this problem. I have just tried the Mac Mini on my TV using the HDMI port and I get the boot menu displayed when holding down the Option Key and it works fine. The issues are arising when I plug a VGA adaptor into the mini display port and use that with my monitor. The monitor is not reporting any out of range or sync signals while booting and I have tried 3 different monitors of various ages and all have the same result.
I also get no apple logo or any display while OSX is loading when I use the monitor

  • HS-23 silent when used with N73

I just got a N73 from Vodafone which was packaged with a HS-23 headset. With this headset I use the silent profile but it seems that for incomming calls the ringtone cannot be heard in the headset as I would expect :-(
If I change the profile settings the ringtone can then be heard on the phone and the headset but never in the headset alone. Nokia Customer Care suggested I refer to my Authorised Nokia Service Point for inspection But I first wanted to check if anyone else has this experience or am I missing something simple in the settings which should solve the problem?
Any advice would be welcome. Thanks :-)

The only thing you can do is make sure the connections on the pop-port and on the headset plug are thoroughly clean.
Failing that, thake the phone and headset to a care centre and they'll be able to determine if either is at fault.

  • Macbook does not recognize external USB drive - except when booting with CD

    Hi all,
I recently swapped my Macbook's internal HD (Toshiba 100gb 5400 rpm) into an external USB enclosure (Eagle Consus). The computer does not recognize the external HD, even when using two USB cables for extra power. No luck with safe mode or resetting PRAM. Disk utility just hangs with spinning wheel if I start it. Switching the USB ports does not help.
I thought it might be a power problem until I noted the following:
1)The external drive works fine if I boot the Macbook from the Mac OS install CD... with this I can run disk utility and scan the drive with no problem
2)It works fine on an old Mac Mini with only ONE of the USB connectors plugged in
3)The enclosure worked fine on the Macbook when I had the new drive in it (320 GB 7200 RPM) while copying the files over
    Any thoughts?
    Many thanks,
    --T

It is actually using a power supply, yet it will not actually power on unless it is connected to a computer's USB port. At least this is how it works on my old desktop running Windows 2000. When you disconnect the drive from Windows, or put the machine in hibernate mode, the device actually shuts down. It powers back up once the machine wakes up from hibernate mode.
It's a somewhat older device which predates the Macbook Pro, but it claims to support older Mac, such as the G3, G4, G5, iMac, iBook. OSX 10.0.4. So perhaps it's just too old?
    It's a Buffalo HD-HB250U2 (250 GB).
    So you're in Japan too?
