Linux Install - ulimit, dbconsole
Hello- brand new install of 11g Standard Edition on Ubuntu Linux...
I read a helpful startup script and entered most all of the configs by hand before install.. reading the logs I can see that oracle starts up and has been configured.. though the configure app did end up complaining and did not finish completely (java and oracle proceeded to keep the dual CPU box at load 5 for the next 9 hours while I slept !!)
so now I go to start the DB and a console.. two problems:
* ulimit - whether in .bashrc, or in /etc/security/limits.conf.. I cannot get these ulimits right.. I currently have, user 'oracle'
oracle soft nproc 2047
oracle hard nproc 16384
oracle soft nofile 1024
oracle hard nofile 65536
dbstart runs without error, but
when I run emctl start dbconsole , I get the msg -- ulimit: 25: Bad Number
followed by
OC4J Configuration issue. /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_hps-desktop_lin11 not found
well, I am not used to the terms yet.. my ORACLE_SID = lin11
but I know I have a database called orcl
so looking in the directory, I see
OC4J_DBConsole_hps-desktop_orcl
hmm.. dont know what to make of that mixup
clarifications for Up and Running Install welcome
thanks
I'm also using Ubuntu and get the same error message when running emctl:
ulimit: 25: bad number
I traced the problem to the file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/commonenv which is sourced by emctl.
The offending line is line 23: ulimit -S -c hard
If you type this line into bash, it works just fine, but emctl begins with the line #!/bin/sh, which on Ubuntu systems is symbolically linked to /bin/dash. Now, ulimit is a built-in shell command, not an executable file, and bash and dash seem to have a different syntax. If you type "dash" at a shell prompt to start a new dash shell, and type that particular ulimit command, it will complain about a bad number. (I'm not sure what the "25" represents, that number seems to be related to the number of lines in the shell script in which the command is found.) Be sure to type "exit" when finishing this test to return to bash or whatever your preferred shell is.
Two things to note: this ulimit command is related to core file sizes and its failure shouldn't cause any problems, so you can probably safely ignore the error messages. Secondly, Ubuntu is not an officially supported OS for Oracle, so this problem may not exist with Suse or RHEL, I don't know. I am running Oracle on Ubuntu, and it seems to work fine, although installation was a bit of a headache.

Launching Wizards in Oracle 11G on Linux install
Hi,
Just wondering if someone can tell me where the wizard launches are located in the Linux install.
Thanks,
ZachHans,
I have heard them referred to in different ways,
Configuration assistance, Wizards, etc. Say if I
didnt want to create a database by command line. I
wanted to walk through "Configuration Assistant" and
choose defaults for the quick and easy setup. No worries. Using the correct terminology gets the right answer faster, and the wrong terminology simply means that we have to test and verify the question. Always works that way.
One definition of professional is 'a person who knows the right name for the tools'. Based on that, I've known come amateurs who are much better than the pros.
I would like to figure out where to launch the
"Configuration Assistant" that might let me do that.
I know in Windows environment, they are located right
in the Oracle start menu. Actually, if you took a moments gander you might have noticed that the 'Start Menu' is nothing more than a set of shortcuts. There is literally no program 'In' the Start Menu.
Right clicking on the Start Menu shortcut and looking at the properties would tell you the name of the Assistant and that it is located in the ORACLE_HOME/bin directory.
And the nice thing about Oracle is that the names are pretty much the same in Linux, Unix and Windows (and others as well) Due to historic silliness, Windows needs a .exe at the end of the file name, so in Windows it is netca.exe and in Linux it's netca ... and so on.
>
Thanks for any help.Hope the above helps

Failure to install CD 3 of Linux install set
Downloaded four zip files from the following location:
http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux
Unzipped them to the ISO files and then burned the four CDs - no problem and the CDs were validated as okay. During the install CD1 - no problem, CD2 - no problem, CD3- problem - wrong CD was the error message. So redownloaded, unzipped, and reburned CD3. Redo and precisely the same error.
THEN went to the following location and downloaded the five ISO images from here and burned the corresponding CDs.
http://linux.us.oracle.com/isofs/RedHat/RHEL4/i386/ES/U4
Burned the five CDs and they validated as okay. Install - CD1 - no problem, CD2 - no problem, CD3- problem - wrong CD was the error message. Precisely the same thing as above.
THEN - took both sets of CDs, and instead of my home machine I took them to an ed center and attempted the install on a spare machine and get exactly the same errors as above.
What is going on - seems like it always CD3 (regardless of the number of CDs) that croaks - how do I get Linux installed?
THANKS for any help - Ken CooperDid any of you ever solve this problem ? -
I have same issue with CD 3, no matter what I try it claims to be unable to read the darn thing !
The packages it has failed on so far is XDELTA / ZSH / SENDMAIL - all from CD3
I have tried burning a new CD3 copy -> same thing.
I changed the CD drive of the server. Dunno why it would accept CD1 and CD2 but not CD3 - anyway it didnt work either !
Tried using both CD's in another PC and was able to extract and view the faulted packages without a glitch !?!
I'm lost for clues . . .
Now i'll try fetching the CD3 again and burn a third copy....
And then i'll try to choose to few things that it might not need cd3.
If that also fails i'll throw everything away and ask them to use MySQL or MSSQL :)
Is there any way to copy the stuff to harddisk and run install from there !?
- just point me to the manual if I overlooked that possibility :) ? -
Hello,
I hope I'm in the right forum.
I have tried a triple boot on my macbook (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP504)
- extra partition for Win7 and Linux - installed rEFIt - Windows installation without problems.
But the Linux install fails.
(Tried to install with openSuse 11.3) The CD booted normally. But after I clicked on the "install"-Button, a green screen appears and nothing moves. I've also tried to install Ubuntu (10.4 LTS) but after the CD booted, a black screen appears and the screen is frozen.
After that I decided to reinstall my OSX, perhaps it helps. But that doesn't solve the problem.
Sorry for my bad english. I hope you can help me,
MaxThanks for the reply. I figured it out on my own. Something to do with
specifying the directory or changing the current directory, I forget exactly which. -
Linux Install Podcast does Arch
The last two episodes of the Linux Install Podcast covers the installation of Arch Linux. I'm not what you'd call an expert, and I make mistakes, well, I make a lot of mistakes. But I do manage to get Arch installed with X. I get wireless working with a rt61 based wireless card and I get my ati radeon xpress 1100 working with both the open source and the proprietary drivers. Anyone interested in hearing someone fumble through an Arch install can get the podcast from: http://thelip.net
Arch can give you what you want (so can Debian and Gentoo), but the two most important criteria for a lightweight system are: 1: install and load only what you want, and 2: when you have an option, go for the less resource hungry solution (MPD vs Amarok, for example).
P.S.: I use both a custom kernel and the stock kernel on my netbook. Both load with same ram usage (as only required modules are loaded by udev), just the install size vary as the custom kernel is stripped down for the modules that I really need. What makes the difference is not kernel really, but what you load afterwards. My netbook loads xorg, openbox and some lightweight eye-candy like conky, wbar, etc immediately after booting up, the ram usage at the beginning of session is ~60 megs (only!). -
Official Arch Linux Install Guide needs edit
Aloha,
This line in the Official Arch Linux Install Guide

MahaloHum, well I don't know how to write a git patch. I guess it would be a good thing to learn though, but I have to go to bed now.
Hum..., after further looking at the this forums section I guess I posted in a totally wrong place Live and learn.

? Linux Install via vncviewer post install ? device xvda was unreadable ?
Thanks in advance:
Using 64 bit new server/ I've successfully installed version 2.1 64bit of VM Server.
During the virt-install --vnc
# mount -o ro,loop /OVS/running_pool/rac1/rhel-5.1-server-x86_64-disc1.iso /el/EL5x86_64
# service iptables stop
# service portmap restart
# service nfs restart
# exportfs *:/el/EL5x86_64
What is the name of your virtual machine? : rac1
How much RAM should be allocated: 8000
What would you like to use as the disk (path)? /OVS/running_pool/rac1/rac.img
How large would you like the disk (/OVS/running_pool/rac1/rac1.img (gigabytes)? 100
Would you like to enable graphics support? (yes or no): yes
What is the install location? nfs:192.168.1.11:/el/EL5x86_64
Then I set the DISPLAY=<client-ip>:0.0
The /etc/exports contains: /el/EL5x86_64 *(rw,no_root_squash)
During the Linux Install
1. I configure the IP for the Guest OS install
2. Configure TCP/IP for the new Guest OS
I Get a Warning on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
The Partition table on device xvda was unreadable to create new partitions it must be initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive.
I choose: YES
Because it will not allow me to choose NO
Then I get the following:
Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout
The Select the drive(s) to use for this installation
I see
Check for xvda 102399 MB Xen Virtual Block Device
Then I get the ERROR:
The file system-config-services-0.9.4-1.el5.noarch.rpm can not be opened.
I appreciate advice heterthe rpm package, system-config-services-0.9.4-1.el5.0.1.noarch.rpm is not in the first disk, but in second ISO file.
.../Enterprise-R5-U1-Server-x86_64-disc2.iso/Server/system-config-services-0.9.4-1.el5.0.1.noarch.rpm
so you need change to second ISO file. or you may download EL5.1 DVD,and need not switch iso file since all rpm packages in one ISO file. -
No display after linux install on Satellite A100
Hi All,
On the weekend I decided to install linux on an extended partition on my toshiba satellite a100. I did a fresh install of windows from the recovery cd and everything worked fine. I then installed linux on an extended partition and my computer displays nothing when starting up - (the LCD has a back-light) and I get all the beeps and it reads from CD's etc. The strange thing is that I can plug it into an external monitor and it works fine. When I start it up with an external monitor I can then switch to the LCD and I get a display but it is very slow and has many imperfections.
I have updated the bios, installed the latest graphics drivers (ati) but still have no improvement. Since the linux install I have removed the extended partition and installed windows from the recovery cd again (still not improvement).
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can try next?
Thank you in advanced for your help. You ask what you can do??
Delete and format the whole HDD and reinstall the OS from the recovery CD.
If you want to use the Linux, I would recommend using a Knoppix. You can get it on the Live CD and its not necessary to install it on the HDD. -
Computer freezes before BIOS after arch linux install
This is my first time installing arch linux, I followed the beginners install guide word for word. However, after the install, my computer gets stuck before the BIOS. It identifies the RAM, GPU, and harddrive (all Diagnostic lights are ok on my MOBO). Before the install it booted fine, but now when I boot it up it wont go to the BIOS screen no matter how many times I press delete. However, when I remove the harddrive it boots to the arch linux install screen on my USB drive perfectly.
I know it is not my hardware because I did many different tests (mem-test, swapped out harddrives, tried 1 stick of RAM in different slots, etc). More importantly, my harddrive is brand new so I know it isn't dead because I could partition it when I was installing arch linux.
Computer specs:
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+
DFI LANPARTY nf4-d
ATI Radeon x800
2 GB DDR RAM
160 GB SSD
I have no idea what the problem is, I must have screwed something up with the bootloader or something. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.Try clearing the CMOS settings either by removing the motherboard battery for some minutes or by using the relevant jumper on the motherboard. Check the manual of your motherboard for details.

Linux install server and solaris 10
Hi,

/sbin/install-discovery: information: not foundHmm. That looks like the image file is corrupt. Can you pull the image from media again? Can you see if there's a /sbin/install-discovery file in the image (usually under Tools/Boot/root). I recall there used to be a problem with that file.
Linux box setup:
/etc/bootparams

Those are for automated installations.
TFTP setup from /tftpboot:
[root@robert tftpboot]# ll
total 232
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jun 10 13:55 C0A80214 -> inetboot

/home/sunos_install *(ro,no_root_squash)
[root@robert tftpboot]# showmount -e localhost
Export list for localhost:
/home/sunos *
/home/sunos_install *That looks pretty good.
You do have the option of running VMware on linux, and putting a Solaris 10 image on it, then using that VM as your boot server. But the problem you're displaying doesn't appear to be related to the linux server.

Where is the guide for Apache2/php5/10g/Linux install?
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/opensource/php/apache/inst_php_apache_linux.html
is now sadly outdated considering that the stable releases on all products are now:
Apache -> 2.0.52
Php -> 5.0.2
Oracle -> 10.1.0.3
I am looking to run namely these software versions on a Linux (Fedora Core and/or Debian) system, but can't find any worthwhile documentation anywhere (oracle, google etc.).
First of all I would like to know if it is even possible to run Apache 2.0.52/Php 5.0.2 with oracle-instantclient-basic-10.1.0.2?
I know that with Oracle 9i you had to install the whole 300MB client install to get things to work easy, but that time has surely passed?(!)
I am running oracle 10g on a seperate installment, and would like to connect to it with Apache 2 and Php 5. What is the best way to do this?
I don't want to sound rude, and I do not expect a full installation guide, but if somebody could tell me how to do this I would appreciate it. The apache part is easy, the tricky part is the --with-oci8 php part combined with the instantclient (installed correctly and added in ld.so.conf).
--with-oci8=/usr/lib/oracle/10.1.0.2/client/(lib) does not even remotly work. Whats the trick, if any?
YS
Anders BergI have been working on this issues for a few days now. I was able to get Apache 2.0.52, PHP 5.0.2 and Oracle 10g Client(Administrator option) to work. Here's my compile
export ORACLE_BASE=/opt/oracle
export ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/OraHome_1
export ORACLE_SID=DBRAC
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/usr/lib
./configure with-apxs2=/apache/bin/apxs with-oci8=$ORACLE_HOME --enable-sigchild
However, when I compile using '--with-xsl' option (I isolated the problem with this option), I cannot get a database connection. There's no error with the compile. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance
Here's my actual command
./configure with-apxs2=/apache/bin/apxs with-oci8=$ORACLE_HOME enable-sigchild enable-track-vars enable-sockets enable-wddx with-curl with-mysql with-gd with-gettext with-ldap with-xsl enable-soap enable-discard-path --enable-exif -

Srini -
Hi
From the Oracle d/l site I have downloaded the same 11.1.0.6 db file 3 times and got 3 different cksum values.
1844527800 May 15 14:25 linux_11gR1_database_1013.zip
cksum linux_11gR1_database_1013.zip
1640646659 1844527800 linux_11gR1_database_1013.zip
But should be
1044354138
Not having this problem with any other d/l's.
Needless to say that, although it unzips, the installer fails in different locations each time (33%, 45%) Typical error below. Installer just hangs
Is anyone else having the same issue?
It seems to be tied to the oracle site as no other downloads I make are suffering this problem.
I'm thinking of taking the 3 downloads and somehow trying to patch one good one out of them by diff'ing the folders but this is tedious.
Thanks
Kevin
