Linux on Oracle: Installation Problem..Odd!!
I am trying to install oracle 8.0.5 DB server on my RedHat5.2 box
with all the necessary rpm install like gcc, cc,lib etc.
I am running the orainst from the har disk, I answer all
questions and then
I see the graph bar appearing and oracle getting installed.
However,
when I get to the point where it has to create the
ntcontab.o
I get the following O/S Error report:
Error during action 'Creating ntcontab.o'.
Command: make -f
hda4/u01/app/oracle/product/8.0.5/network/lib/ins_network.mk ntcontab.o

directory
ntcontab.c:7: sys/types.h:No such file or directory
mv: ntcontab.o: No such file or directory
make: *** [ntcontab.o] Error 1
I also have the make install , when i type (for testing) :
make: *** No targets. Stop.
For the permission for oracle user, I have granted all type of
permission available. using linuxconf from redhat.
I would appreciate if anyone could give a hand with it. I am
stuck!!
Thanks you very much,

Oracle Installer Problem while installing Oracle 9i on HP Unix
Hi Everyone ,
I had earlier installed 9.2.0.1 on Linux and had no probs whatsoever . When i am trying to install Oracle 9.2.0.1 on HP Unix , the Oracle Installer opens up a window saying CHOOSE JDK HOME DIRECTORY . I have already set the PATH environment variable to point to /opt/java1.4 and /opt/java1.4/jre/bin and also JAVA_HOME to point to /opt/java1.4 . Even after trying to put the directory information it refuses to go thru giving the Error INVALID JDK HOME.PLEASE ENTER CORRECT JDK LOCATION.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
RaviThis could be due to you have multiple JDK homes like java1.4 and java1.3. Instead of type JDK home in the windows box, try to browse and select the JDK home and try it. Otherwise, if you have multiple JDK homes, then try to remove one of them.

nullThis resolved my problem as well. I am on Windows 2000 server, SP2. The problem installing Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 standard edition exhibited itself by briefly changing the cursor to an hourglass and then returning to ready. The executable JREW.EXE would briefly execute in processes and then stop.
I copied the installation media to a server drive and renamed symcjit.dll and the installer worked correctly.
Thank you to Yugandhar for this solution.
We too faced some of those problems ie setup.exe wont even run in Windows XP pro, p4 system..the culprit is symcjit.dll. Its the problem in p4 to run this dll. After lot of research, just rename it and all is set to go.

Oracle Installation Problem on MacBook Pro with OS X
Im trying to install Oracle database 10g on my MacBook Pro with the latest OS version. At first I was a bit confused on which of the links I should download, so I downloaded the client release 1, it was a 300mb aprox download. When the download was over I couldnt run any of the files on my Mac, maybe its because they only run on Mac OS Server? maybe i got the wrong link?
FORGOT TO READ FIRST... SEEMS LIKE A COMMUN PROBLEM. SORRY

Canon LBP6000/Linux/Drivers/CUPS/Installation Problems/Help
I'm working on installing these drivers, http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/laser_printers/imageclass_lbp... the "CAPT Printer Driver for Linux Version 2.60". My distribution is Arch Linux, and my print software is CUPS. I've been at it for a couple of days now, and am pretty familiar with with all the terms, variables, and commands; I think the main problem is that some of my command line settings and other random printer options/preferences are filled in with the wrong choices.
Anyone wanna help me sort this out?Hi Suzanne,
I'm also based in Hong Kong with the exact same printer I bought from Broadway the other day. I had the same problem as you describe when I tried to install it earlier tonight, but now I've got it working.
Once you have the driver installed and the printer connected and turned on, open any printable document, then:
File > Print
Choose "Add Printer..." in the Printer dropdown menu
You will see LBP6000/LBP6018 in the box that appears. Ignore it. Instead, click on "More printers..." in the bottom left corner of the same box.
Another box will appear with a dropdown menu at the top, giving you two choices. Choose "CANON USB (CUPS CAPT)," which will give you the model number again. Click on it, then "Add," and voila!
Hopefully, this will save you the angst you will likely suffer from calling customer support (funny how that has become an oxymoron...) -
Oracle Linux 6.2 Installation Issue
Basic Oracle Linux 6.2 installation problems.
There are two iso files supplied for the installation.
V29609-01.iso (install files)
V29610-01.iso (bootable disc)
I boot from V29610-01.iso and the setup files run fine.
I am then prompted to identify the location of the second disc.
I encountered a problem where my DVD drive door would not open to insert the second disc.
To work around this problem I created a partition on my hard disc to copy
the installation files for the second disc to.
I boot from windows 7 (my primary operating system) and copy the installation files from the disc
to the partition.
I reboot from V29610-01.iso.
When prompted to identify the location of the install disc/files on my hard drive
I selected the drive where I copied the files to and press <enter>
I receive a message that it cannot find the image disc there.
I shut down.
I boot from windows 7 and this time copy the actual disc image
V29609-01.iso there instead
I reboot from V29610-01.iso and repeat the same procedure.
It still can't locate the disc image.
(I noticed the boot disc always defaults to the following structure in its displayed path \image\image.img
for the image file that it is trying to locate)
I shutdown.
I boot from windows 7 and this time create a directory called image and
rename V29609-01.iso to image.img and copy it to the image directory. Still no luck.
Why can't it locate the disc image?
Thankyou@ O.P.,
What are you actually trying to accomplish? Replacing your Windows OS with dual boot Linux? In the later case I recommend you to use VirtualBox and forget about the old-fashioned and obsolete dual boot. Of course your system must not be older than 7 years with a x86_64 CPU and VT-x or AMD-d option. Why do you want to install a 32-bit OS?
Anyway, the V29609-01.iso install DVD is bootable. You will need to burn the .iso disk image doing a raw disk copy, but not the content of the mounted .iso image or you will loose the bootloader. There is plenty of information in Google searching for "burn iso image". If you use Virtualbox you can boot right of the disk image file without burning a DVD. -
Hardening Linux for Oracle 10g
I have been working on creating a bare-bones RHEL 5 installation which will act as an Oracle 10g database server. For hardening Linux, I have restricted to a bare minimum of packages to make it more secure. This installation did not have X-Windows, Gnome/KDE and a host of other services that will not be required on Production servers. I selected only the BASE installation which was further customized to include just the following (there is scope to trim this further, so feedback is welcome):
NetworkManager
readahead
smartmontools
yum-updatesd
irqbalance
acpid
crash
cryptsetup-luks
dos2unix
dump
finger
gnugpg
ksh
libaio
logwatch
m2crypto
man-pages
mdadm
nano
numactl
openssh-clients
openssh-servers
pam_ccreds
pam_krb5
pam_passwdqc
sendmail
setuptools
stunnel
sudo
symlinks
system-config-network
tree
unix2dos
unzip
vconfig
wget
which
yum
yum-rhn-plugin
yum-security
zip
Since I do not intend to use nfs, nis, samba – associated packages were not included. Further hardening was achieved by deleting non-required services (kudzu, avahi, gpm, atd, netfs, ip6tables).
The challenge comes when I begin setting up Oracle 10g using the oracle validated rpm method. In an attempt to resolve dependencies, YUM ends up installing 70 packages that do not apparently seem to have anything to do with an RDBMS (sound libraries, Gnome, X libraries and tools etc.). For me the libraries/binaries required for linking appear to be justified but the rest appear to be installed only for the Installer.
This package addition also ends up installing gamin which provides the gam_server which has bugs in it that lead to > 90% CPU consumption.
I further tried erasing some of the packages to see if anything broke. Till now nothing is broken and the database is running fine. Till now I have removed:
gamin
gamin-python
gnome-mount
gnome-vfs2
libbonoboui
libgnome
libgnomeui
oracle-validated
yum-updatesd
esound
hicolor-icon-theme
GConf2
gnome-keyring
gtk2
libglade2
libgnomecanvas
libnotify
libwnck
notification-daemon
audiofile
cups-libs
gnome-mime-data
cairo
pango
My questions:
• How have you created a production/hardened Linux based Oracle installation?
• Can you share your experiences in hardening Linux for Oracle and deploying the Oracle 10g RDBMS without installing the scores of packages which themselves might compromise the server?
• What exactly is the dependency for the Oracle 10g RDBMS on X11, Gnome, Gamin and graphic libraries such as Cairo and Pango (to name a few)?
• Which Linux system services are really mandatory for Oracle?
• Does a non-default secure installation compromise Oracle support?
The current memory footprint for this setup (without any workload) is (figures in MB):
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1010 458 552 0 19 377
-/+ buffers/cache: 61 949
Swap: 2047 0 2047
…of this 290 MB belongs to Oracle ☺
I will be working with the other route – without using the oracle-validated rpm.
Please let me have your feedback.

AniruddhaHi,
I'll paste the rpm -qa of a RHEL5 server I have installed through rpm -ivh (not yum at all)

Installation problem oracle 11g R2 on oracle enterprise linux 5 update 5
hello support,
i've installation problems with oracle 11g R2 on oracle enterprise linux 5 update 5. In the section "ORACLE Net-Konfigurationsassisten" the failure "[INS-20802] Oracle NET-Konfigurationsassistent not success". What's wrong? I've followed the instructions on http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/smiley-11gr1-install.html
I've heard the problem can occur with problems in /etc/hosts? My /etc/hosts is configured:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 oracle localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
is this ok? what can I do to bring the database-installation to success?
Thank's for help ;-)

user605023I'm facing the same error message while install Siebel 8.0 on OEL. But before I had this ksh problem, it complains about disc space first, and I actually has plenty of disk space under the directory (it needs only 0.7 G and I have 17G free). Anybody has encountered such problem before?

Installation problem with Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 8.1
Hi all,
I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 (Rel 3) on Mandrake Linux 8.1. I changed all the parameters, tested everything, created the users (oracle & apache) and groups (oinstall & dba) as per the documentation. I downloaded the Oracle's "tar" file from the Oracle's web site. I unzipped that in "/shared" directory on my PC. I changed to "/shared/Disk1" directory and gave "./runInstaller". A window is opening with the following buttons.
About
Deinstall products
Exit
Help
Installed products
Previous (disabled)
Next
Only "About" and "Deinstall products" buttons are working. None of the other buttons are working. When I press "Next" nothing is happening.
Could anybody help with this problem. I really appreciate it.
Thank you very much in advance,
Murali.Hi all,
This problem got solved. Its very silly thing. Number lock should be off, when you are running Oracle Installer. It worked for me. (This is for Mandrake Linux 8.1)
Regards,
Murali. -
Having the following problem. Perhaps someone had the same. In that case, please help.
I have P4 with 1GB of RAM and 2GB of SWAP. No disk space problem. No shared memory problem. I installed the Client of Oracle9i (9.2R2) on redhat 7.3 (standard installation as Server). I have already noted here that with the Oracle installer running, the system uses almost all the RAM available (99.5% of the total), but at least it can conclude the installation. However it never uses the SWAP (100% free).
When tried to install the Database (enterprise or standard), the installation continues as long as there is RAM available. When reached 99.6% of the total used, it does not give any response (it hangs at 41% of the installation). Even here no SWAP portion is used.
Is there a problem of the kernel dispached with Rh7.3 in using the swap? does Oracle Installer really needs so much RAM? or am I missing something in the installation process of the Database? I am using jdk-1.3.1_04 downloaded from the sun website.
I would appreciate if you cc your response also to [email protected] I may have problem to access the Forum in the coming two days.
Thank you in advance.
Jama Musse Jama.Check the Support Matrix (if you can find it) and it will tell you that Redhat and most Linux are not supported. I bought Redhat 7.3 Professional , a WinBook with lots of disk and speed and tried to get 9.2 to run on it. no way. It's not certified so it's not supported. Even though I explained that what I was trying to do was get rid of Windows XP and move to RedHat 7.3 and would they send me Oracle 9.2 when it was available. I got the CDs 3 days later. but it won't work. Now I am left with the choise of buying the 9AS package or going backt to XP.
I do not thing that Oracle is living up to the spirit of LINUX. They say Linux but they mean a very specific subset. Who do they think they are, Bill Gates? -
Problem in Running the Oracle Installer Remotely
Hi,
I installed the Oracle 10g on Enterprise Linux 4.5. The installer runs fine on the linux host successfully. And install the oracle software. Now I want to run Oracle installer remotely from my windows xp workstation but It is failing. Also I want to run DBCA remotely. But it also failed. Can anyone help me with this problem. On local linux machine every things works fine. I can run xclock as well locallay.
I need step by step instructions please. I am totally new in this.
I am using SSH connection to access my Linux box. ( I am using PuTTY ssh/telnet client).
Do I need to set any environment variable as linux user in my .bashrc file (Profile file). If so what is that.
Do I need to modify any file at Linux server for X forwarding. ( I am not at all familiar about X forwarding, how or when to configure it and why). If so what all things I need to do.
Any setting at my windows xp work station.
Any other recommended ssh/telnet client to use instead of PuTTY.
Many Thanks in Advance.

user575045Hi Madrid,
According to your instructions I started vncserver at Linux box. Now from my windows workstation I want to connect to linux. Can you recommend a good vnc client. I google and saw mostly vnc software is for windows. I tried TightVNC Viewer but I dont not connecting to the linux server. Once I provide the IP for Linux server It is giving me the errors that it could not find any vncserver. On linux I am running the vncserver. From my windows box I can ping the Linux server.
Any help or recomendation in this regard will be highly appreciated.
Thanks
