Lion broke macbook airport hotspot!

I used to regularly create a wifi hotspot with my macbook under "internet sharing" by enabling sharing share connection from "ethernet" to computers using "airport" to move files between my iphone and macbook, or to stream media to my ios devices.
However Lion has messed this up by waiting until an internet connection appears to create the wifi hotspot! The hole point is i may not have an internet connection/ wifi connection but i still need the wireless connection! I dont need the internet i just need the hostpot thats created!!!!!!
Im really annoyed because i used this everyday!
Any ideas on how to get around this? Or how to force the macbook to create a hotspot like it used to?
On a side note... OSX lion, massive fail in general apple, i wouldnt say its crap, just very pointless, and not as good as snow leapord, im kicking myslef for clicking "buy".
PS
Im about to try and shove an ethernet lead into the macbook and see if thatll trigger the hotspot without internet connection.
Thanks for any advice guys, and feel free to join in my bitvh about lion.

I dont think iv explained the problem very well. Let's start with an example. If I wanted to play a game on my iPhone with a friend in the room on an iPhone to iPhone one option would be to use the wifi in the house to connect the devices in order to play the game. In this situation i am using a wifi hotspot but not the Internet and not a pc/mac to pc/mac wireless network.
I want to use my laptop as a wifi hospot but not the Internet. Apps such as spotify presume that you have a wifi router in your house to transfer files through, (not over the internet just via your routers wifi) If you're not in the house, you need a different wifi network to do this and thats why you turn the MacBook into a wifi hotspot. Creating a wireless network is not the same thing it's a closed system used to transfer files between your macs and pcs. To use my example again, you wouldn't be able to play a multiplayer iPhone to iPhone (non Internet) wifi game over a pc/mac tp pc/mac wireless network that you set up on your mac, you need it to be a regular wifi hotspot.
The MacBook can no longer do this without an active Internet connection, because it doesn't trigger the wifi hotspot till it notices an active incoming Internet connection, (which I obviously don't have if I'm on a train).
I have just been on the phone with apple care and they admit that this is no longer possible in OSX Lion.

  • Macbook airport issues fixed?

I just ran Apple software updated and it include a fix for time machine/airport drivers.
Tada, its all fixed...or so it seems!

My wireless card firmware has gone from 1.3.2 to 1.3.4 but I haven't noticed any difference to performance at all. As soon as I take my MacBook more than about 15 feet from the airport I stop getting its signal, (I used to be able to take it 100 feet from the airport and get a good signal.)
Meanwhile my iBook with 10.4 working with the same airport express can get a signal 100'+ away from it.
If this is "the fix" for Macbook airport woes I'd say we are stuffed. I've just ordered a USB adaptor so I can at least use it when I travel at wifi hotspots.

Since upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro is super slow connecting to Wi-Fi (seems to search forever).  This is not the case with my Daughter's MacBook (still on Snow Leopard) or my Wife's Dell (Windows 7).  Any ideas?

Hold Option when you click on the Airport in the top bar & post the stats.

If you bought the MBP new 3 weeks ago, it should have come with Mountain Lion already installed. Did you update your MBP to the newly released 10.8.4 update? If not, what OS were you running before the upgrade, and what version of Mountain Lion do you have now?

  • Hi, My network went down earlier in the week.  Now it is fine, but my macbook airport no longer detects it and keeps asking for a WAP.  When I put the password in, it 'times out'.  I'm getting rather fed up.

Hi, My network went down earlier in the week.  Now the network is fine, I can connect through the ethernet cable, but my macbook airport no longer detects it, when prompted, macbook will find it, but I get asked for the WAP.  When I put the password in, it 'times out'.  Prior to the network problem my macbook worked fine everytime. Anyone know the answer?

My guess is all the issues are probably related and fall back to malware.
AVG is probably correct in identifying malware. So I suggest you try some cleaning tools other than Emsisoft .
    ones I use (all of them one after the other until I find one that can cope) are;
    Roguekiller http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/
    Malwarebytes anti malware Free http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/var2/confirm/
    ESET online scanner http://www.eset.com/int/home/products/online-scanner/
So first create a clean boot in Windows using Microsoft's instructions https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135?wa=wsignin1.0 and then run the anti malware applications.
My outside looking in guess is that malware has set itself up as an internet proxy and is is downloading copies of itself and other malware, blocking some mail port as times as downloading more malware is more important, and probably breaking your tivo as well..
Try the malware programs first. If that does not work I will try and talk you through some logging to see what is happening.

  • How can i install snow leopard together with lion, on a Lion based MacBook Pro ultimo 2011

    Hi
How can I install Snow Leopard on a Lion Based MacBook Pro ultimo 2001. I will both have installed Snow Leopard and Lion on my computer, but how can i do that?
I have purchaded Snow Leopard, but I can installed it
    Pls can anyone help me
    Best regards and merry christmas

Apple figures that having supported PowerPC code for the last 6 years is enough so they dropped it.
Why should they have to support some that old forever? It doesn't make good business sense to support some that so few will use.
If you must play those games, my suggestion is to get an older Mac that will support PowerPC. It is going to be a difficult task to get Snow Leopard to run on a new Mac.

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

  • Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

My MacBook was not normally booting up. It would turn on, make the Apple startup noise, and the bottom loading bar would progress just a little bit, then my MacBook would shut down. I tried rebooting it many times and the same thing would happen, it would just shut down. Then, I read that I can reset the PRAM (by holding Option+Command+P+R after the Apple startup noise comes). That worked, but now I get a screen that asks me to choose one of the 4 options (see:  http://images.macworld.com/images/article/2012/07/lionrecoveryutilities-289404.j pg). I choose Restore From Time Machine Backup, but it progresses to 17.6% and gets stuck there forever. I tried doing it again, and it got stuck at 17.6% again. That is why I am asking if I should just reinstall Lion, then restore a previous backup on the fresh new Lion?

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Macbook airport problems linked to battery power?

I too have experienced the macbook/airport problem, specifically since 10.5.8 came back. When I upgraded to 10.5.8, it was so useless that I just reinstalled tiger. Then Snow leopard came out and I upgraded only to experience the same problem but not as severe.
I have just been able to pin/point the problem today (mainly because I just grew so frustrated and spent considerable time trying to figure out). I have tried all the other potential fixes posted on here to no avail (changes airport settings, replacing card, changing dynamic IP to manual, encryption etc).
This is what I have determined and was able to reproduce it:
When macbook is running on power (plugged in):
If battery power is below 60%, connection is spotty - the lower it is, the worst the problem.
If the battery power is above 60%, no problems at all, runs fast and no drops.
When macbook power is not plugged in and running on battery:
    Below 60% almost useless
Above 60% spotty and worse as the battery drains
Can anyone else test this out? I've sent Apple an e-mail.

I've gone down to maybe 15% without any noticable difference in connection.

  • Macbook airport extreem and brother printer/scanner DCP-330C

I have macbook airport extreem and brother printer/scanner DCP-330C and everything works fine.
    I can print wireless.
The only thing that irritates me is, when I start my macbook I first see a screen with MFL-ProSuite, I quit then a screen with connect with USB, I quit and then I see a small blue screen.
Is there a way to get rid of these things, so I can start directly with the things I want to do.
    Thanks for the reply.
    Frank

That is something that has to do with the brother software. Doesn't have anything to do with the airport base station.
I would try and Contact brother to see about disabling it.
What I think , is probably because the printer is on the airport not the computer so brothers software is getting confused.
See about deleting just the software and not the drivers. That is if you dont need the software.
