Lion Removing Spaces in all Search Windows?

I just recently upgraded to Lion on both Macbook Pro and Mac Pro. On both machines, anytime I try to use the serch wondow, in all software such as Aperture, Mac Mail. Safari,Spotlight the spaces between words is automatically removed. So far the only exception is Firefox. Anyone else run into this problem?

Found the answer to this issue. I'm amazed this received no responce from the community. Must mean I was the only one with such issue. Amazinly, the exact same thing was happening on three differnt Macs that I loaded Lion to. The answer was given to me by a very helpful and SMART tech person at Apple Care. Two other Apple Care techs were going to have me reinstall the entire OS after wiping my computers clean. I finally found someone that knew what they were doing. He simply took me to Apple>Preferences>Language & Text. Then I selected the Text Tab and then went to the bottom of the window and Reset Default Settings. Bingo, all was fixed. Each machine I did the same thing on and all are working fine now. Hope by me typing this up will help others if needed since not one person responded to this inquirey.

  • I just upgraded to Lion and now cannot add attachments to my emails in Safari or use the search window.  What gives?

I had been holding off upgrading to Lion because of the bad press, but discovered that I could no longer receive email on my Mac because my iPhone had been moved to iClound by an Apple tech when it had to be replaced, and my Snow Leopard version wouldn't support iCloud.  So I upgraded to Lion and immediately began having trouble.  First I was told that several of my software applications were incompatible and had been removed.  Then I discovered that Safari (apparently the latest version 5.1.3) had lost functionality.  I can't attach anything to my emails and the search window is grayed out and inoperable. Is there a fix or do I need to retreat to Snow Leopard?  Bob Kellam

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • How can I keep lion from generating .DS_Store files on windows network partitions, but not disable it for all network partitions?

How can I keep lion from generating .DS_Store files on windows network partitions, but not disable it for all network partitions?  I am fimilar with changing the setting for all network partitions(defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true), but that is undesirable when I connect my laptop to my home network. A preferable solution would be where I could control the writing of these files based on disk format (NTFS vs HFS+).

Go to MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for ds_store. There are numerous utilities for preventing them from being transferred to Windows systems.

  • How can I get my toolbar back to its former condition. After it was "fixed", my tool bar is changed....I would like the 3 coloured buttons to be on all the time as well as the search window.

I need help to restore my toolbar...Right now I have to  put the curser up to the top so I can get the minimize arrows in order to get the coloured buttons. I would like to always see the 3 coloured buttons as well as the search window

the 3 colored buttons should still be there unless you're in full screen mode, hit the esc key on your keyboard in the top left side of it. now what do you mean your search window? if you only have one bar at the top, if you're running lion, that's normal with the new update the one bar is now your address bar and google search bar all in one/

  • How do I get all the control buttons in one place in 3.6.16, like they used to be in previous versions? Having the refresh and stop buttons between address and search windows, and the home button to the far right is awful.

In 3.6.16, the buttons are all over the place. In previous versions, the forward, back, refresh, stop and home buttons were all together. In this version, the refresh and stop buttons are between the address and search windows, and the home button to the far right.
I would love to have them all together as they used to be - much more user friendly that way. I have tried installing alternate themes, but the coding of this version over-rides the themes.

Firefox 4.0 has a combined Reload and Stop and Go button that appears at the right end of the location bar.
To restore the Firefox 3 appearance you can use these steps:
    * Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
    * Move the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position at the left side of the location bar.
    * Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
    * Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

  • Search Windows Space in Leopard: failure

In Snow leopard, trying to search Windows drive/space returns nothing. It is on a separate drive, Mac stuff on another. I can find files manually.

Is it the NTFS (read only) structure that makes search impossible? Or because Leopard can't maintain an index for search. If the answer is that it is impossible to search Windows disk space in Snow Leopard that's what will close this (dumb) forum question.

  • How can I completely remove iTunes and all associated files/programs from my Windows PC?

How can I completely remove iTunes and all associated files/programs from my Windows PC?

iTunes, along with Quick Time, iCloud, Apple Software Update, Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Application Support can all be removed from your PC by uninstalling them using 'Uninstall or change a program' in Control Panel. The only obvious thing that will be left behind is your iTunes library which remains untouched. If you want to remove that as well it's just a question of deleting it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Why did Lion remove spotlight search from right click options?

Why did Lion remove spotlight search from right click options?

If by "contextual menu" you mean Right Clicking, then Yes, I now can highlight text (say a name in Address Book), right click it, and Spotlight searches for it.
There is a little triangle next to the word Searching in Sys Pref; make sure it's pointing down and opens the sub-choices below it, i.e. Look up in Dictionary, Search with Google, and Spotlight.
Let me know if this doesn't do it for you.
    Good luck.

  • Removing Spaces

I've been using Desktop Manager for quite some time. I use the app all the time, probably 50 times a day. Even though I like Leopard, it screwed up my Desktop Manager app. I NEED to use ALL apps in ALL SPACES, not just one space per app, which is complete nonsense to me. I DEFINITELY DO NOT WORK that way. It stops/ ruins my creativity. Does anyone know how to remove Spaces or stop it's influence on other apps?

Spaces had a verifiable problem of activating itself when the Enable Spaces box was unchecked, but that was mostly resolved in version 10.5.2.
You can try this. After Enabling Spaces, select all the applications in the lower window and click on the minus button to remove them from the list.
Uncheck the Enable Spaces and this may prevent Spaces from interfering.
On the website Jane mentioned, it says version 0.5.4 of Desktop Manager (DM) is built for Intel/PPC and requires Mac OS 10.4 or later, but I don’t think it has been updated to work with Leopard (according to other users of DM).
VersionTracker reports DM is designed for OS 10.3 to 10.4 PPC.
However, as Kappy said, it is apparently not compatible with Leopard. On the DM developer’s website there is this warning:
THIS SOFTWARE IS ALPHA QUALITY. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. IT HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED WITH OS X VERSION 10.3 (PANTHER). ON OTHER VERSIONS YOUR MILAGE MAY VARY.
I understand how you would prefer Spaces to be workspace-oriented rather than application-oriented and I have had several discussions with other users on this forum about it. They have logged a suggestion to Apple to provide an option to let the user select between the two different orientations of working with virtual desktops.
You might search this forum for others who prefer the workspace-orientation virtual desktops and see if they have any work-arounds.
Sorry, this probably doesn’t help much.

  • Final Cut Pro search window does not SORT.

I am an editor and I use Final Cut Pro everyday. I recently had to upgrade to LION because of a wonderful Quicktime update that corrupts
video codec files on Snow Leopard. So now that I have LION I can actually edit again. But, when I try to import files into Final Cut the
search window wont sort my files by date, name, etc...
It wont actually sort by anything. Every other program works fine for that, mainly After Effects. I have to manually go find files that I used
to give a certain naming system to because I could find them easily by typing in one word.
I also cannot search the Network anymore at my office which is a real pain. We dump all our finished projects onto a huge server. Now
when I need to find an old file I have to know the exact date it was made or else I have to go searching through every folder in our server.
Any body know of any way to fix these issues without having to rewrite code which I really don't want to do with my company computer.
Also our IT people refuse to learn anything at all about MAC computers which is SO helpful...

Im not sure what you are referring to. Maybe I didn't explain the problem correctly.
Final Cut seems as if it is not indexing the files. Most of the time it won't even show me dates (modified, created, etc...) just dashes. Then if I  do what you are describing and try to sort it at all it stays in the same exact order. I can't even sort alphabetically.

  • HT201364 how do i remove space from my start up disk

How do i remove space from my start up disk?

Do you mean "make" space on your HD?
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • I can't get google in search window after upgrade to 9

I just upgraded to version 9 and now the search window (the one at top right) doesn't work at all. I used to have google there as default, and other engines available on drop-down menu. If I go to manage search engines, I'm taken to add-ons page with nothing like the search choices I used to have. Is this a bug, or is this function no longer available? If Firefox no longer supports this functionality, how do I revert to an earlier version without loosing bookmarks, settings, etc? Win xp SP3 on desktop.

Do you still see any default search engines in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\)?
If not then do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
