LMS, Captivate and C:drive tracking

We are implementing a new LMS however will need to place large captivate files on the local PC hard drives due to low bandwidth.  The user will access the local PC files through the LMS.  Need help in getting the LMS to receive SCORM information from the local PC files.  How can this be accomplished?

SCORM essentially dictates web-delivery. SCORM does not account for locally-delivered files with tracking to the web.
I'd love to know how you plan to 'access the local PC files through the LMS'...
Regardless, one approach is to create some custom SCOs, though I'm not sure this would work. A SCO manifest can point to resources outside the LMS itself, so you could theoretically...maybe...deliver the large media files to customers via CD or network share, then have the SCO launch an HTML file that looks to that local path to load the actual content. As long as the content passes it's tracking information to the index file, which in turn is passing the values to the LMS API via JS....that might work.
However, I'm sure there's some security issue trying to load local SWF files into a web-delivered HTML file...?
Otherwise, you could try to build a custom application that runs locally (i.e. AIR) to which users login, which then grabs their To Do list from the LMS and finds the related local SCOs, allows them to launch, track the results locally, then at some point synch those results with the LMS...
...but I can't imagine that's an easy task.

  • Captivate and LMS JavaScript Problem

We use Captivate and a Plateau LMS. We had an issue with
bookmarking within our course. The first lesson worked just fine,
but later lessons were not bookmarking. We added javascript alerts
to the code to see when the Captivate content was setting LMS
    variables.
We feared the issue was the bandwidth between the client and
the LMS was so limited that the script attempting to set the LMS
variables was failing, but this is not the case. The script appears
to not run at all sometimes at random intervals. When it does run
it is successful each time. The first lesson, which works reliably,
is much smaller than the other lessons, maybe the size of the SWF
factors into the ability for the script to run properly?
Has anyone else run across this issue? Does anyone have
advice in deeper troubleshooting an issue like this?
    Any input is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Chris

I think that CP3 sends back its data on a time basis, not a
    slide
basis...like every 7 seconds or something?
We've had customers who are tracking interaction data in
    their CP
quizzes which have like 40 questions. If they go through it
    too quickly,
the timed 'save' to the LMS gets behind quickly...so by the
    time the
user is done, only 2/3rds of the suspend data has been
    saved...
And I imagine the bookmark could be left out entirely as
    well.
So see if it's a timing thing? Go through slowly, see if
    posting happens
on a timed basis...maybe that will help determine where the
    issue is...
I do wonder how CP4 sends its data back...

  • Captivate and Canvas LMS by Instructure

    Hi
Does anyone know if there is any info or procedures for connecting Captivate to Canvas LMS by Instructure?
Can it be done using LTI?
Any info whatsoever would be helpful.
    Thank you!
    Matt

Thanks Tom.  Have you any experience building a middleware app that would allow Captivate to talk to Canvas? Or have you heard of anyone doing this?
I received this response from Canvas:
"You will most likely have to build your own app (middleware) that can bridge the communication gap between Adobe Captivate and LTI.  What is your programming language of preference?  We do a lot of ruby at Instructure, so we have a lot of example ruby apps on github, if you wanted to use  one of them as a place to start."

  • Difference between captivate and presenter

HI, what's the difference between Adobe captivate and
presenter. Do they both do the same? Which one is better for use in
    creating online training modules?

It took me a while to "get it" too. Yoiu can take a look at
Adobe's spin on things from the blog site maintained by Silke
    Fleicher from Adobe at:
    Sike Fleicher
    Blog
But the real truth of this is that they are quite different:
-Captivate Excels at computer software simulations, software
demos and software learning simulations (where the user gets to try
    a simulation test.)
-Captivate is a stand-alone application and not an add-in to
    powerpoint
-Captivate does let you import PowerPoint slides
-Captivate creates a stand-alone CP file to store your setups
and then you publish to Flash, Word, Acrobat
-Captivate does not produce a side-panel to show progress,
but it does provide a wide range of progress bars and related
forward and back button options and positions
-Presenter is an add-in to PowerPoint
-Presenter has an optional navigation panel to show progress,
but it has limited forward and back navigation button options.
-Presenter is more like PowerPoint, but you gain Quiz sets or
single Quiz options and the ability to integrate and embed Flash
content such as Captivate SWF files as a slide set. For example you
can have a PowerPointesque look with a navigation pane on the left
or right and then present the user with a video or software
simulation on another slide and then Quiz the user about the
    materials or demo.
I would consider Presenter to be about as hard as learning
how to use PowerPoint, but all of the options are now on one menu.
I would consider Captivate to be about as hard as learning to
use Excel, where the basics are easy, but there are many options.
For Software demos and simulations, Captivate is the better
    choice.
For Quiz-Enabled PowerPoint, Presenter 7 is the better choice
For e-learning of Software, you can use juset Captivate, but
both products make a good team
Finally, while Adobe charges a bit too much $$$$ for each,
the cost is recouped with the time you save on a large project. If
the products were 1/2 of the list price, they would probably sell
10X the number of copies and create some real BUZZ about these
products for the group of people that are not e-learning
    professionals (a huge group).
The final piece is a system that integrates the Quiz results
for user login and score tracking. Known as a Learning Management
System (LMS). Both Presenter 7 and Captivate export to Adobe's
Connect system in Connect format and they also publish to SCORM or
AICC formats used by other systems. However, the cost of the
Connect system for LMS (not the live presentation piece, just the
e-learning piece) is well beyond reach for a small company (about
3X the price of other products). The 40% annual maintenance fee
charges, limited feature set and slow to fix it support make
Connect about a grade "C" compared to the competition. Adobe can do
far better to make Connect the LMS tool that it could be in terms
of features, price and bug repairs. So if you need a LMS to go with
this, then you should certainly look at Connect and price it (it is
nice), but look at what you could get elsewhere for both features
and support at a given price point.

  • Deleting a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0

how do i delete a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0 at the same time.

    Hello CleveCo, Inc
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

  • What is it like to edit HD with FCE4 and multiple video tracks

I would like to get an idea of what it's like to edit HD on final cut express on an Intel based Power MAC (let's say 2.8GHZ with a large hard drive and 4mb of memory)
If one was to have 4 video tracks and a track of green screen with various transitions ( 4 minutes of video)
I really can't get a handle on this when reading the threads and forums.
When I hear people say I have no trouble editing HD on an Intel 2.8 power MAC, I often wonder that may be the case if you are editing one track of video, but what about multiple tracks, transitions and green screen layers?
If anyone is doing this on FCE with an Intel based Power MAC, I'd like to hear what you are experiencing. I know it;s different for everyone but I'd like to hear some examples and times

Four streams of video with effects can be handled by FCE using Unlimited RT, but it does depend on the computer and the drives. The internal drive of an iMac for instance would be hard pressed to do this without a lot of stuttering on playback. A fast external drive like a RAID would be needed to get good performance.

questions, T/F, multiple choice and matching. The second set has 2
questions a multiple choice, and matching. I have the submit and
next buttons on the question. I used these questions last year in a
course that was published in Articulate and uploaded to our LMS
(Cornerstone) and I had no problems.
This year we revised the current course, I made text changes
to the questions in Captivate and published. After I import these
into Articulate, you can not see the corrective feedback text when
you select the correct answer, the incorrect feedback text will
always display even when you select the correct answer. I used the
Import .swf in Articulate to display in presenter window. If I
import and display in a new window, thew question works.
I am baffled to what has changed that would prevent the
correct feedback from displaying. Anyone ever hear of this and have
any suggestions on how to fix this or what I should be looking at
    to fix this?

You say nothing about the version of Captivate used to create
the courses. Obviously, "last year" indicates that either Captivate
1.0 or 1.0.1 was used, but it's rather important to know which. The
implicaiton of "this year" indicates you upgraded to Captivate 2.0
    - is that correct?
Pending replies to the above, it occurs to me that the
problem does have to do with conversion of the original files -
specifically some branching seems to have gone awry. Let us know
what version of Captivate you used originally - and which you are
using now. Might not hurt to include the same info on the version
    of Articulate Presenter being used.
    Thanks.

  • Working with Captivate in Hard Drive Enclosure

Got a new computer and put the hard drive from my
old computer in a Hard Drive Enclosure. To get Captivate to work I
had to re-enter my key ... can open demo Captivate sample cp but
when I try to open Captivate files that I created the file starts
to load in Captivate and then Captivate closes. Using version 1.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Sid

    Hi:
    Thanks for the quick response.
See link to Hard Drive Enclosure .... I took the hard drive
out of my old computer and put it in the enclosure .... then you
hook up the enclosure to your new computer via a USB connection ...
I can run any applicaitons on the old hard drive by ... simply go
to my computer and look for dive f: to access.

  • 90 minutes of video and 6 audio tracks is too much?

I have all 6 tracks of a 5.1 setup, but it will only allow me to listen to the left right channels and nothing else, either in the mix or by itself, even though the meters are showing me activity on all six channels and show the tracks as active. Any ideas, I dont really need to hear it as a surround mix, I know FCP doesnt support this, but I would like to hear the components individually just to make sure the assets sound okay for encodijng in DVDSP,
I tried bouncing to STP but I get the same resultsm except STP actually tells me it cant play me all the tracks and its dropping pn playback due to lack of disk space or something like that.
It seems strange that with a dual 1.8 G5 3 gig of ram and 150 system and 250 Gig scratch drives I should have more than enough space for playback to be possible. Is there anything I can do or that I'm not doing?

check your Audio Output assignments ... for each audio track, right click in the track control area of the timeline (between the track lock and auto select button seems easiest to me)
    hope it helps

  • Load Cycle Count and Hard Drive Life

When I heard about issues with another platforms default power-management settings burning the life out of notebook hardrives, I decided it would be wise to check how my own MacBook Pro was doing. I installed smartctl utilities via Darwin ports and started keeping track to my drive status.
I was shocked to find that the LoadCycleCount as reported by my machine's SMART subsystem was over 500,000 of an expected 600,000 cycles in a harddrive typical life on a system that was just 18 months old of just typical use. Since then I've monitored things and haven't been able to get it to slow down - so that it's now crossed 613,000 after 8032 power-on hours and the macbook is still running - not making any weird drive noises either.
I've been making weekly backups now - but I'd still rather have a planned replacement than get caught in the middle with a downed system. Frankly, I'm bothered by how fast this drive's life has been "used up" by the default settings of OSX. Have people ever gotten a pro-active replacement approve by applecare - I have the extended warranty on my machine - but don't want to void my warranty on the whole machine just to fix this harddrive issue.

    1. Yes.
    2. I have used 254 for years on my HP.  I don't run for extended periods on batteries, and I hate spin down / spin up delays.  I have never had a problem and always use it sitting on my lap, often being set down on and picked up from a desk.  I would not worry about it.

  • Hard Drive Speed Difference Between FireWire 800 and Internal Drive

Right now I have my entire 1.5 TB Lightroom photo library on an external drive connected to my new Mac Pro via FireWire 800. Will I experience dramatic or even noticeable speed improvements if I move this drive to one of the internal SATA hard drive bays in my Mac Pro?
I would likely buy a new drive and SuperDuper the external to this new drive I put in the Mac Pro.
    Thanks,
    Matt

SATA II 3Gb is only the controller bus and has almost nothing to do with actual individual drive speed. Confusing the bus interface with hard drive speeds is not a clear way to compare.
Just pull the drive out of the FW case is all you probably need to do. Actual FW800 is less than 80MB/sec and more like 72-75MB/sec - which is as slow as your hdd gets from slow inner tracks.
Other than green, most 1.5TB drives average minimum 75MB/sec to max 115 with average in mid-90s. And the first 1/2 of a drive is where best performance comes from.
The size of the data and media library, amont of free space, all play a role.
I think FW should be left to backups, an alternate boot volume, off line data.
If it was Aperture library, but otherwise SSD is not realistic or viable. Nobody uses RAM disks as they are inefficient.
I still find 10K VelociRaptor ($279 / 600GB) fast, smoother, more responsive, great for system and data drives, even if they are only 135MB/sec, or about what some of your 2TB drives can offer.
QUICK TAKES - A striped pair of Velociraptor 600G 10K HDDs matches the speed of one SSD. For less that the price of one 256G SSD, you can buy two 10K 600G Velociraptor HDDs. If you stripe them (RAID 0), you get the same sustained transfer speed as the SSD. http://www.barefeats.com/quick.html
If you are not already using all the internal drive bays, just nice to have them handy before going external. Also take a look at two other articles on Barefeats:

  • Adding Memory and Hard drive

I have an original MacBook Pro, running 2.33 GHz with 2 GB Ram and 160 GB hard drive. I am looking to add memory and I was wondering if anyone knows how much my book is upgradable to. And I was also wondering if it's possible to put a bigger hard drive in. When I look at Apple memory, my MacBook Pro isn't even listed. Thanks.

You can get some idea of the "level of ease/difficulty" involved in replacing the HD from http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo/Hard-Drive-Replac ement/115/10/Page-1 or http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Manuals/15-inch-macbook-pro-manual.pdf
It is certainly harder than with a MacBook, or with the very latest model of MBP, but it is not too bad. Certainly easier than with an iBook or some of the PowerBooks , for example, as long as you proceed carefuly and cautiously, keep track of where the screws came from and *use the right tools*.

  • Display of Responsive Design inside LMS [Captivate 8]

I have recently begun designing courses with Adobe Captivate 8. We use a third-party LMS system, "Meridian Global LMS", or, "MG LMS" for short.
We have run into a problem where content displayed inside our MG LMS system on a mobile device does not display the "mobile sizing" as programmed in Captivate 8. Essentially, it defaults to the "desktop" parameters.
We tested the same course inside the SCORM Cloud website, and we did not observe this issue - when accessing the content on mobile devices, it displayed the "mobile sized" view as intended.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any workarounds? What is going on here?
Devices tested: iPhone 5 running iOS 8.1.2, Android Galaxy 3 running Android v4.4.2

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.
