Load Balance but No Failover

I have an application that does not fail over nicely to another server. I would like to configure my CSM to load balance normally on new connections and keep the sticky so an individual workstation always accesses the same server.
It is my understanding that should Server A fail, eventually all connections will be redirected to Server B. i would like to prevent this from happening. The client would rather see loss of connectivity than have a workstation's connection fail over to the operating Server B.
Any chance?
Thanks
LP

The only way would be to prevent the server from going down. So, by not configuring probes, as long as the server is able to answer arp request, the traffic should be forwarded it to it and if the service is down, the client will get a failure.
If you also want to cover the server is completely down, you could configure static arp entries on the CSM for those servers or put a routing device between the CSM and the server.
However, I have to question such a config.
Why would you want half the users to go the failed server ?
Are you afraid that one server only would go down with the load ? if so you could use maxconn to protect it.
Are you afraid that when a server goes down all connections get stuck to the remaining server due to the sticky entry ?
If so, you could use a source hash algorithm instead of a sticky group.
All I want to say is that there might be a better solution to your problem than having users stuck to a dead server.

Gilles.

  • LRT224 Load Balancing and Link Failover

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have recently set up the LRT224 with two different ISP's. I am having problems configuring the Load Balance and Link Failover.
When I have Load Balance selected only one ISP (WAN 1) is active, the other (WAN2, ISP modem) remains inactive. Why is Load Balance only engaging one ISP?
When I have Link Failover selected, even with attempts and seconds configured to one second, and WAN1 has packets lost, it doesn't switch over to WAN2.
I am not tech savey but any help will be greatly appreciated so that I can get both ISP's active with Load Balance or at least have Link Failover work almost instantly. Thanks.

    Hi @BSue2015,
If both WAN1 and WAN2 are already getting IP Addresses from your ISPs then we can say that Load Balance is working. To check it further, do a speed test by going to http://www.speedtest.net. Dual WAN connections are doubling the amount of available full speed connections due to the load balancing. The speed should have its maximum throughput even if you have several users on the network.

  • Load balancing and transparent failover in RAC 11g

    Hi,
The only way to configure load balancing and transparent failover in RAC 11 g R2 is using the clauses LOAD_BALANCING and FAILOVER on the tnsnames.ora of application server. Is that correct?

If the database is admin-managed, I shall suggest that rather than playing with the remote_listener parameter , set one service as preferred for one instance. For the other service, let it be preferred on both the nodes. The service with just one instance as Preferred won't be able to use loab-balancing as there is just one instance available for its disposal.

  • Cisco SA 520W set up for load balancing but traffic not routing properly?

Forgive me cause my networking skills are a bit rusty. So we have an SA520W that sits in-between both of our ISP connections. One connection is 4 bonded T-1s and the other is a shared 50/20. I have configured the SA520W with the optional port set to load balancing. I set the protocol bindings to be HTTP and HTTPS to go over the optional WAN which is the 50/20 yet when I do speedtests I am getting very mixed results. Sometimes it reflects that I am on the 50/20 and other times I just get 5 down and 5 up. and then other times it is a mix between the two, like 5 down 15 up.
It is just weird. I don't understand am I missing some other protocols I need to bind other than HTTP and HTTPS? It isn't just speed tests either I have noticed some weird web page loading issues as well. You can go to a page and it loads really fast and then later on...

Furthermore,  can you give us an overview of your network topology and user info.  If  possible, can you provide us the configuration and dbglogs from your SA  520W so that I can forward to the development team?
To get the dbglog from SA520W, login through web UI and in the browser enter the following URL:

  • 11i load balancing web nodes without use of Hardware http load balancer

I am looking at note 217368.1 (Advanced Configurations and Topologies for Enterprise Deployments of E-Business Suite 11i) and some other notes on load balancing but some aspects are not clear.
Aim is to implement load balancing traffic to web nodes without using Hardware ( BigIP, cisco etc) for HTTP layer load balancing.
Which is more preferable between dns or Apache Jserv load balancer ?
Need details like failover capabilities, death detection of node, functionality testing and ways to monitor Apache Jserv load balancer.
Any help in this regard is welcome .
    thx
    arun

Oracle recommends using loadbalancing hardware rather than using DNS. If you want the features you mention above, you will need a hardware loadbalancer.

  • ASA and vpn load balancing

    Hi,
I am configuring 2 ASA5540 for internet trafic inside to outside ,
outside to inside (web, smtp) but also vpn load balancing for client to site , site to site and webvpn.
In the doc I can configure them for internet trafic as Active/Standby or Active/active.
for vpn : I can use vpn load balancing
But no information if I want to use the active/passif and vpn load balancing together.
Any thoughts on which way to go? what is the best thing to do ?
    Regards

    Hi,
I think that you cannot use an Active/Active configuration for VPN connections as it is stated on Cisco's documentation: "Note: VPN failover is not supported on units that run in multiple context mode as VPN is not supported in multiple context. VPN failover is available only for Active/Standby Failover configurations in single context configurations" available at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example09186a0080834058.shtml
    Hope it helps

Here are few bits of info:
For load balancing for Analytics, that isn't officially supported yet for the UI and Administration components. It might work with sticky sessions from portal-to-analytics but that doesn't get you much. Improving the options there would be a good enhancement request.
For the collector, I think there are two important things to remember. Use broadcast mode. I've never actually seen it in unicast mode, but broadcast definitely works. Also, remember that this is all managed by Portal and Analytics - you don't use your own load balancer between Portal instances and the Analytics Collector instances.
Finally, ALUI Directory is not certified to be load balanced yet. On a separate note, ALUI Directory has a socket leak on Windows due to a bug in the version of Jrockit that ships with it. Upgrading the embedded application server for the ALUI/WCI installation to jrockit-R27.5.0-jdk1.5.0_14 will resolve it.

  • How to load balance runbooks?

    Hi,
Now I have successed to deploy an seccond Runbook Server in an test environment. But I have not fully understanding how the runbooks run on the primary vs standby. And I know that by default one Runbook Server can handle 50 runbooks, and how to scal out
    runbooks?
    How to load balance runbooks?
    How to fail over runbooks?
    /SaiTech

you can change how many concurrent runbooks are allowed to run on a single runbook server. 50 is just a default value.
you can assign a runbook to run on a specific runbook server (or more). this is the simplest way to load balance.
runbooks will failover automatically. do note that the runbook will start all over, hence you need to put in safeguards in your runbook. word of adwise is to keep runbooks small and chain them together. This makes them easier to recover.

  • Load Balance guest Internet access via two different DMZ zones at two sites

    Hi Sir,
My customer has the following unified wireless guest access requirement:
    - There are 2 internet links and dmz zones at two different locations, Site A and Site B
    - Data centre is at Site A
    - WiSM is proposed to be installed at the Cat 6500 in Site A
    - Lightweight AP are distributed across Site A, Site B and other branches
    - Only one anchor WLC is proposed at Site A, DMZ zone to provide guest internet access
My customer would like to load balance the guest via the two internet link at Site A and Site B but with the same SSID across all locations. Can it be done since only one anchor at Site A? How about puttting another anchor WLC at Site B, DMZ zone? But how can i establish two EoIP tunnel to two different anchor WLC from a single WiSM?
    Thanks for your help
    Delon

You can... but you can't control where the traffic will flow. The wlc will determine which DMZ wlc it will use. The wlc will load balance, but traffic in site A might go to site B. I currently have deployed that senerio in multiple client installations....

  • Best Option (if any) for Load Balancing Distribution Point(s) on Same LAN

    Hey Guys -
I've got a simple question this time.  We use SCCM 2012 R2, manage ~800 systems at 3 locations, but perform most work at our main office where this scenario takes place.  Here, we have a single DP on-site which is a separate VM than our Primary
    which is also local.
Recently, our PC Lab tried running our OSD TS on 16 systems which were each started 1-2 minutes apart.  When run on a single  brand new PC connected via GB network, the OSD TS takes a couple of hours to complete so with 16 it really caused some
issues.  We had a couple of Programs/Packages/Applications which actually timed out due to the default 120 minute max run time.  We don't usually image 16 at a time, but often do 2-3 at once so are looking to find a solution to speed things up anyways.
    My Question
What is the best solution / method for implementing any type of load balancing on a single LAN?  I'm not asking for true load balancing, but simply any solution where multiple systems running a TS can pull from more than a single local source if possible.
We do not use multicasting and from what I've been told it will not be a possibility as it causes havoc on networks so it's out. I know that some clients can share content depending on deployment configuration, but don't know how / if this applies to OSD
    Task Sequences.
    Any suggestions or ideas?  Thanks!
    Ben K.

Agree, 16 machines is not a lot. I would normally go for about 2000 machines per DP depending on pkg/img size etc. Whats the size of that rebuild? Image + packages? Do you do a full DL before starting or is it started from WinPE?
Our BranchCache tools will of course help, regardless of how fast your gig link is since data will be pulled from more sources, but think your issue is more network related? If the images is 5 gig and you add another 5 gig of packges in the sequence a 1Gb/s
link should pull that 16 * 10GB=160GB in about half an hour. So think dont think you are having 1Gb/s from server to clients.

  • Load balance traffic to a service based on a added field in the HTTP Header

I am trying to use HTTP Header Load balancing but the field we want to use in order to load balance is "user-defined", example HTTP_TOTO = toto1.
Do you have any idea on how I could perform this ?
    Thanks in advance

Load balancing using pre-defined headers is supported. Not sure if load balancing using user defined fields is possible. You could refer to the following document.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/webscale/css/css_710/bsccfggd/httphead.htm
We would appreciate it if someone could share their experience if they know more about this.

  • Guest N+1 redundancy & load balancing in seperate data centers

I need assistance in aquiring documentation to setup N+1 redundancy & load balancing between two seperate guest anchor controllers installed in seperate data centers. Can you explaing how it should be setup or point me in the right direction for documentation? If you can't point me in the right direction to aquire documentation; can you answer the following questions?
    1) How do I setup my mobility groups on my guest anchor controllers installed in the DMZ? Should both guest anchor's be in the same mobility group.
    2) Do both guest anchors share the same virtual IP or do they need to be seperate (DMZ01 - 1.1.1.1 / DMZ02 - 2.2.2.2)? I think seperate!
    3) Are there any configuration parameters on the guest anchors for load balancing?
    4) Do either on of the guest anchors need to be setup as a master controller? I'm not sure?
    5) Are there any configuration parameters on the foreign controllers for load balancing?
    6) How do I setup my foreign controllers? Should both guest controllers be added to the mobility group on the foreigh controller? I would think both of them would be added to the foreign controller mobility group.
    7) Should both guest anchors be added as an anchor on the WLAN? I would think both controllers would need to be added as anchors under the WLAN!
    8) Am I missing anything here? This is how I think it should logically work?
    Thanks,
    Gordon

I need to elaborate on my questions:
    1) Do both of my guest DMZ anchors need to be in a seperate mobility group on their own or can the guest anchors be in completely seperate mobility groups? All 100 + foreign controllers are in seperate mobility groups.
    I) Example #1: Guest anchor number 1 (Mobility group: DMZ) / Guest anchor number 2 (Mobility group: DMZ)
II) Example #2: Guest anchor number 1 (Mobility group: DMZ01) / Guest anchor number 2 (Mobility group: DMZ02)
    2) Do both guest anchor controllers have to be configured with seperate virtual IP's or do they share the same address?
    I) Follow up to this question: I want to register the DMZ controllers with our DNS servers so that my clients receive a name when authenticating through my customized webauth. I am currently using 1.1.1.1 as the virtual address and I'm pretty sure this is the address I need to register with my external DNS server. My question is this. Does the address I use for the virtual interface matter? 1.1.1.1 is not a valid address with my network. Do I need to assign a valid address registered with my network if I'm going to add this address to my external DNS servers?
    3) No change to my original question.
    4) No change to my original question.
    5) No change to my original question. I have run into Cisco documentation that mentions guest anchor load balancing, but the documentation is very vague. I'd love to be able to load balance as the network group wants to limit my guest traffic to the internet. I could double my pipe if I could load balance the guest anchors.
    6) No change to my original question, but the answer to question one is key to the setup of my foreign controllers.
    7) Elaboration: Should both guest controllers be added as an anchor under the WLAN on the foreign controllers? I would think both of them would be added.
    8) No change:
    9) Should my secondary guest controller be added as an anchor on the WLAN of the primary guest DMZ controller and visa versa?
Can my Cisco expert answer this or do I need to open a TAC case?

  • Load Balancing with forms server 10g

    Hello,
i've a cliente which is right now processing a migration from a client-server 6i platform (using Terminal Servers) to a forms 10g web platform with several Application Servers 10g in standalone.
At the end, client want to enable Load Balancing in order to have some manage at each Application Server load.
The idea to accomplish is to have an hardware Load Balancer. The client already has a CISCO CSS 11503 SSL.
Is there any documentation where i can check more info about the compatibility/configuration to this architecture.
    Thanks for your attention.
    regards,

You can check this doc Link:[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/hpux.1012/install.1012/install/toc.htm]
It say all about it, and don't mention nothing about a Load Balancer, but I'll try tokeep searching.

  • Load Balancing vs PQ processes accros RAC nodes

    I have following config.
    •     3 node RAC (10.2.0.3 on RHEL)
    •     All services (ERP, CRM, MISC and many more) configured for symmetric load-balance. i.e. Load balance across nodes.
    •     Each node has Instance_group set to run all the above services. Parallel instance group set to same as service name at the session level.
    •     PQ is enabled at the table level for some of the large tables with degree of 4.
    Issue :
    •     Quite often, QC gets spawned on the one node , but all the slaves gets spawned on a different node. This overloads the interconnect and slow down the fetch when result set is large.
    Question :
How do I make all PQ processes (slaves + QC ) to go on the same node ? Is it possible to do without changing the load balancing scheme?

What is your interconnect configuration? Single Gig-E? What number is "large"? What do you do with large result sets? Spool them out? It’s GigE. Mostly extract of Multi-Million rows i.e. spool. Other with similar volumes goes to ETL server for complex downstream processing that subsequently gets fed to other targets.
In order to get this behavior you need to have an instance groups that only contains one node each, then change your parallel_instance_group to be that group.Yes. I have been told that by Timur as well with those two links. The links were helpful to understand the mechanics of Parallel Instance Group. In that link ( Part 2 ) mentions that it’s symmetric load balancing but I see he’s not load balancing connection across the both the nodes as he connects to specific nodes. See below excerpts from his blog site. Did I missed or mis-understood anything there?

srvctl add service -d ERPCRMP -s -r  rac1, rac2, rac3….All the session makes connection with above TNS entry. Now how do I set up Instance group so that my connection goes to any of the 3 nodes and slaves are restricted on the same node as QC.
Do I have to set something like this?
    Node 1:
    INSTANCE_GROUP= IG01
    PARALLE_INSTANCE_GROUP=IG01
    Node 2:
    INSTANCE_GROUP=IG02
    PARALLEL_INSTANCE_GROUP=IG02
And so on for the 3rd node.

  • Cisco CSS 11503 Arrowpoint/Load Balance question

I am troubleshooting an issue with my 11503.  I am running version 07.40.0.04. I have it configured as follows:
      content upcadtoa-rule
        add service cadtoa-wls1-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls1-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls2-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls2-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls3-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls3-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls4-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls4-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls5-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls5-e1
        add service cadtoa-wls6-e0
        add service cadtoa-wls6-e1
        arrowpoint-cookie expiration 00:00:15:00
        protocol tcp
        port 8001
        advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
        redundant-index 2
        vip address 172.30.194.195 range 2
        arrowpoint-cookie name TOA
        active
However, the load-balancing across the servers does not seem to be doing much balancing.  One of those servers is getting hit with 5 times as much traffic as another and another server is lucky to get a connection at all.  With the cookie expiration set, one would think that this would all balance out over time.
I just came across this information from Cisco and I am wondering if it is relevant:
If you configure a balance or advanced-balance method on a content rule that requires the TCP protocol for Layer 5 (L5) spoofing, you should configure a default URL string, such as url "/*". The addition of the URL string forces the content rule to become an L5 rule and ensures L5 load balancing or stickiness. If you do not configure a default URL string, unexpected results can occur.
In the following configuration example, if you configure a Layer 3 (L3) content rule with an L5 balance method, the CSS performs L5 load balancing, but will reject UDP packets.
    content testing
    vip address 192.168.128.131
    add service s1
    balance url
    active
The balance url method is an L5 load-balancing method in which the CSS must spoof the connection and examine the HTTP GET content request to perform load balancing. The CSS rejects the UDP packet sent to this rule because a UDP connection cannot be L5. Though the CSS allows this rule configuration, its expected behavior would be more clear if you promote the rule to L5 by configuring the url "/*" command.
In the next example, if you configure an L3 content rule with an L5 advanced-balance method, L5 stickiness will not work as expected.
    content testing
    vip address 192.168.128.131
    add service s1
    advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
    active
The advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie method causes the CSS to spoof the connection, however, the CSS still marks it as an L3 rule. Thus, the CSS does not insert the generated cookie and the rule defaults to L3 stickiness (sticky-srcip). You must configure a URL like url "/*" to promote this rule to L5, ensuring that L5 stickiness works as expected.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  The thing is not down, it is just balancing strangely causing application performance issues.

    Hey James,
You will need to suspend the content rule in order to add the url statement.  This will cause a quick downtime until the content rule is activated again.  I have shown below the commands to add the statement.  Perhaps you can create your commands in a Notepad file, then paste them all in so they execute quickly to minimize your downtime:
      content MY-SITE
        vip address 10.201.130.140
        port 80
        protocol tcp
        add service MY-SERVER
        active
    CSS11503# config t
    CSS11503(config)# owner TEST
    CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# content MY-SITE
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
%% Attribute may not be modified on active rule
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# suspend
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# url "/*"
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# active
    CSS11503(config-owner-content[TEST-MY-SITE])# exit
    CSS11503(config-owner[TEST])# exit
    CSS11503(config)# exit
    CSS11503# show run
      content MY-SITE
        vip address 10.201.130.140
        add service MY-SERVER
        port 80
        protocol tcp
       url "/*"       <--------
        active
    Hope this helps,
    Sean
