Local/online help

I have sql server 2012 dev edition on my Windows 8.1 workstation.
While in SSMS I clicked F1 and was asked if I wanted to use online or local help. I selected local and was asked to point to where the doco resided locally. At this point I remembered that BOL is not installed at set-up and has to be browsed online or downloaded.
I went to help manager settings so I could switch from local to online but the dialogue that is shown in all the online articles is not what I see. All I get is the option to browse for local help.
So, I went online and downloaded SQLServer2012Documentation_December2012_EN.exe and unzipped it to my temp directory. When I go to my temp directory I do not see any obvious way to install. I see some html files, lots of cab files and an .msha file that
Windows 8.1 has no clue how to handle.
So at this point:
I have no way to select online help under the settings (dialogue is not shown)
I cannot install the downloaded exe as I see no way to do so.
I have tried pointing the "where is local help" dialogue under help manager to the file unzipped into temp but that doesn't recognize any valid help files.
Where from here?

Hello,
If you downloaded the help from the below link
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=347
Please follow these instructions:
1. Click the Download button on this page to start the download.
 2. Click Save to save the download to a USB drive or other portable media that
can be carried into the firewalled environment.
 3. Double-click the self-extracting EXE to unpack the contents.
 4. Specify a location of your choice to extract the contents to. For example,
a network share that is accessible to your destination server.
 5. Launch Help Library Manager by going to Start, All Programs, SQL Server 2012,
Help & Community, and clicking Manage Help Settings or by launching SQL Server Management Studio, clicking the Help menu, and then selecting Manage Help Settings.
 6. In Help Library Manager, click Choose online or local help.
 7. Select I want to use local help and click OK.
 8. Click Install content from disk and browse to the directory where you unpacked
the downloaded EXE.
 9. Select the HelpContentSetup.msha file and click Open.
 10. Click Next.
 11. Click Add next to the documentation you want to install.
 12. Click Update.
 13. Exit Help Library Manager.
Hope this helps.

  • Forms Online help disappeared

Previously (at least until last week) the Forms Online Help was available here:
    http://www.oracle.com/webapps/online-help/forms/10g/state?navSetId=_&navId=0
but this link results in a 404.
It would be the same as the one shipped with Forms Builder, but it's a little bit hard to post links to my local online help when I want to suggest to use a documented builtin...
Could someone please restore the documentation or at least update the announcement here with the URL where the documentation is located now?
    cheers

It might have to do with SSL/SSO implementation they put into production recently. Since the forums are on SSL and the new fancy login screen got added the whole forum seems to behave quite unstable. I get the "We are sorry blah blah blah" screen almost every second time I click on a link here in the forums. Hopefully they didn't vaporize the docs permanently as it was a good resource to point to....

  • How to use online help instead of local help files?

I know that if I am looking for help in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, I can hit F1 or go to Help -> Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Help...
However, I do not like that doing that sends me to the limited help files that are stored on my local drive.  I would like that link to default to the online help.
Is there any way to do that?
The real reason I want to do this is because I use Mozilla Firefox and tightly control the cookies that sites save on my computer. For sites that I trust, I simply add them to the whitelist. However, I am unable to add file:///C:etc.etc. to my whitelist, so I have to approve 5-8 cookies every time I go to another page within the help files. This is extremely annoying.
In regards to this local help default over internet help, Adobe has said:
The Help menu within the product opens local Help, a subset of the content available in online product Help. Because local Help is not as complete or up-to-date as online product Help, Adobe recommends that you use the PDF version of product Help if you want to stay off-line.
But what if I don't want to use the "subset of the content available in online product Help" and prefer to simply go to the online product Help just like every other Adobe CS4 product?

You could add a custom menu item to the Help menu that executes the following line of code:
    // Acrobat 9 Pro Help
    app.launchURL("http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/index.html");
See this tutorial for more information: http://acrobatusers.com/tutorials/2006/add_custom_menu_items

  • Installing jdeveloper online help documents(html) locally ?

I would like to view the jdeveloper help documents outside jdeveloper
how can I install the Jdeveloper online help(http://otn.oracle.com:8877/jdeveloper/help/), locally on my computer?
    cheers
    Russel

    Hi Russel,
The jar files zip that you have downloaded is specifically for use with Oracle Help for Java (OHJ) - running in JDeveloper.
Unfortunately we are not able to provide the equivalent of the HTML on-line version available on OTN for your local machine.
You could try to use the zip file locally but it would not provide a table of contents and many of the links would not work.
Do you hava a specific requirement for a local HTML version of the help? I can pass this on to the Documentation team as an enhancement request.
In the meantime, your choices are to use OHJ within JDeveloper or to download the PDF version.

  • Adobe Online Help Launches in non english. How do I get it back to English

I have a user who somehow managed to change her Photoshop Online help from English to Arabic. The photoshop menues are all in english as is the entire program. The install language is English. But if she clicks help - photoshop online help - the page opened inthe browser is the arabic page. How can I change her help language back so it goes to the english web pages?
Only photoshop does this. Help for the other apps in the Creative Cloud all go to english pages.
I've tried changing the region at the bottom of the page to United States. That had no impact.

Perhaps she enabled Arabic with English type support or something liek that. without more details nobody can realyl know what's going on Could even be something configured oddly in teh browsert or it have an invalid cookie that changes the locale for the help.

Does anyone could help on that ?
    Thanks,

What web server are you using, if it is OHS then the online will be automatically configured and redirect to the help located on the Oracle website.
If you are using a different web server or want to run the help locally have a read of - Configuring Online Help to Run Locally

  • Accessing Contents & Index online Help

I'm trying to figure out what needs to be included with the
software product when I've created a project in WebHelp using
RoboHelp HTML X5.0.1. However, I can't always get to RoboHelp's
online help by clicking Contents and Index. Is there something I'm
not doing correctly from my end?
    Thanks.

You need to give the developers everything that is in the
folder to which you generated. That is defined in the first page of
the wizard. Sometimes developers will ask if everything is needed
to which the stock answer is "only if you want it to work".
RH first tries to access online help. If it cannot, it should
open a local version. If that is not happening, go to Tools |
Options and select Use Offline Help.

  • Acrobat Distiller 11 "Online Help Content Cannot be displayed."

Any one else packaged Adobe Acrobat 11 and found that all of the help menus display "Online Help Content cannot be displayed.  Verify you can launch your web browser and have access to the Internet."?  The problem is for Acrobat and Distiller, Adobe Forms Central is fine.
Ideally there'd be a way just to make the application be able to access the adobe help on the Internet.  I tried adding the FeatureState registry key as we are behind an authenticating proxy.  This made no difference.
As this didn't seem possible I've configured Acrobat to hide the affected menues and created a new menu which opens the Acrobat_ref.pdf - so Acrobat is now ok.  However, I can't find the Distiller pdfs, i.e. "distiller parameters guide" and "pdfmark guide".  Also I am unsure how you would configure Distiller to point to these on the local machine.  I've used the Adobe Customization Wizard to create the package.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I think you are looking for this PDF which is called "Adobe PDF Creation Settings".

  • Forms 9i Online Help Interface

I installed forms 9i and Changed NLS_LANG parameter to AMERICAN_AMERICA.
The normal menus is in English now but still the menus for the online help is displayed in Arabic Language.. I want the whole development enviroment to be in Egnlish Language Interface..
    How Can I do that???

Sounds like a Bug - I suspect that the Help system (because it is Java) is picking up the Environment settings from the control panel rather than from NLS_LANG - If you change your locale using the control panel does it then change?
Anyway you shoudl log a TAR with Oracle Support to get them to log a bug on this.

  • Can't open RoboHelp's online help

Since yesterday I haven't been able to open RoboHelp's
on-line help. I've tried accessing the help from both the help menu
and by pressing F1 and nothing is happening. I've accessed the help
many times in the past, and I've had no problems.
    Any ideas?
Also, where is the help file stored? I couldn't find it on my
    hard driuve.
    Thanks,

Same thing at the TechPubs Group where I work -- we depend on
RoboHTML and WebHelp. I first thought it might be a local firewall
or other domain security issue (blocking Activex or Java applets),
but there was absolutely no error message or other clue, just a
brief, momentary "busy" cursor and then nada. Would like to know
what the bottom line is, as I have used the Online Help extensively
    over time and recently.
    Have a nice weekend!

  • F1 does not take me to online help!

When I hit F1 in Lightroom 3, it takes me to C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1\Local Store\Help\en_US\Lightroom\3.0\Using\index.html.  I did have CS5 demo installed, if that makes any difference (I seem to remember turning off online help on CS5 - but don't remember how the heck I did it).  The help screen the above mentioned link takes me to says "Adobe Lightroom 3 Beta".
Thanks in advance for any help,

I had the same problem.  I isolated it to a file with a older, obsolete URL reference. The file name is Lightroom_3.0.helpcfg.
The folder in Windows 7 is located here...
    C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\chc.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1\Local Store\HelpCfg\en_US
The easiest solution is to delete the entire chc.4875...8CE.1 folder (the one with the ridiculously long name) containing the file and letting Lightroom Help rebuild the contents (which it will do automatically on first use).  This same folder is used for other Adobe products such as Photoshop but they will rebuild too.
The harder solution is to change the two lines in the Lightroom_3.0.helpcfg file to point to the correct help URL.
    The two correct lines are:
         searchAdobeRefinement="site=lightroom_3_all"
    and
         id="en_US_Lightroom_3.0_Using"
If you feel comfortable editing the Lightroom_3.0.helpcfg file, you should be able to locate the 2 lines that need changing.
    Hope this helps.

  • Acrobat XI Online Help

We are getting an "Online Help cannot be displayed." message when trying to access any of the Adobe Acrobat & Distiller menu options.  Through testing on our system we've narrowed down that this is happening because Adobe Acrobat XI is using an anonymous login to get to the Internet.  Is there anyway that we can configure this to use local system credentials instead of "anonymous"?

Not really.  It appears to be a limitation for Acrobat and Reader Help.  It's documented in a couple of places.

  • Coding advice needed for moving from CHM to 'true' Online Help

Apologies in advance if this is the incorrect forum for these questions. Apologies also if this is a little off-topic; I’m a tech-writer, and I use RoboHelp, but my questions are related to the underlying code that calls my Help files.
Currently we produce Help in RoboHelp 10, exporting it as a CHM, and we’re looking to provide this content online.
Our applications are written in a combination of VO (Visual Objects) and .NET (we’re slowly moving all the content over to .NET). This means that some of the Context ID calls to the Help .CHM are written in VO, others in .NET.
The plan is to modify these calls so that instead of calling a CHM file, they point to a web page address. Can anyone point me in the direction of some help regarding this? I’d really love to see some coding examples of where others are doing this same call to a web page.
The majority of our users have permanent online access. However, there are occasions where they might do an export of a patient’s data (our users are Doctors) and travel on-site, doing a ‘home visit’ for example. We have numerous users who live in remote regions of the country where there is poor or no Internet access. In such circumstances we need the code to detect that there’s no Internet access, and instead of trying to call a web page of Help content, the included local CHM file is called instead (i.e. the ‘traditional’ method of using a Context ID to display a locally-stored CHM Help file). Has anyone done this? I’d really like to see some code examples.

Colum is correct that WebHelp will give you an online help format but it will not be viewable from your server without a connection and that is one of your requirements. What you are looking for is known as Airplane help so that the user gets the latest online help when they have a connection and a perhaps older version when they are not.
How to do that with AIR Help is described on my site but my concern in pointing you in that direction is that I have not seen any new development on that help format. You need the same option with WebHelp and CHM help. I don't have a workflow for setting that up.
There is general information about calling help on my site and you will also find very good information at http://www.wvanweelden.eu

  • JDK online help broken under JDev 903 ?

    Hi,
Since I upgraded from version 902 to 903, online help
for JDK classes does not work anymore.
Neither does it for my colleagues or after a
    fresh re-install (unzip).
It does work for oracle BC4J classes or
    user-defined libs (say ChartBuilder), though.
Can someone please help me restore this basic
functionality offered by any decent modern IDE?
    TIA,
    Bernard.
PS: this seems to have been mentioned by at least
one user, Ms Stohlmann, whose post stayed unanswered.
re:How to add JDK reference to JDeveloper Help?

The hosted Javadoc will be used if the local Javadoc
is not found. Due to the name mismatch, the local
Javadoc is not being found, so JDeveloper tries to
access the hosted doc. Thanks for the explanation, Steve, I like to understand
why things don't work, sometimes ;-)
In your case, it sounds like your firewall doesn't
allow you to get files from outside your your
    company's network.
You can fix this in JDeveloper by setting your proxy
in the Preferences (from the Tools menu, select
Preferences, and then select Web Browser/Proxy). Set
your proxy as you do in your browser, and then
JDeveloper should be able to get through your
firewall to access remote files.Well I have. And I am allowed to access the Net, but on
1st external request, the proxy (from a browser)
    prompts me for a username/password
    (it's a Netscape software BTW)
JDev doesn't prompt me, instead I am getting this:
Proxy authorization required Username authentication is
required for using this proxy. Either your browser does
not perform proxy authorization, or your authorization has
    failed.
I am asking mostly out of curiosity, because local doc by
default makes more sense anyway, but then the auto-u[i]Long postings are being truncated to ~1 kB at this time.
