Locale and Jsp

Hi again,
I am new to jsp and would like to hear some expert advice when handling i18n.
A) How are locales working? I have printed out ${pageContext.response.locale}" and ${pageContext.request.locale}" . Should I work with them when handling localization in an application or is there session object or some other way to do it?
B) Which is the most elegant way to handle database entries i18n? For example if there is a field DESCRIPTION in a table TASKS, and I would like to show a translation depending on the user's locale. What I have as an idea is to create fields DESCRIPTION_EN, DESCRIPTION_DE, DESCRIPTION_JP... and read the locale from point A) - from page context or better from session and then call the right query and show the passing version. Does this make sense?
C) As posted earlier the jstl fmt:message works only partly for me. It gets the message from the right bundle but when browser locale is changed it doesn't change to the right bundle. Where could the problem lie?
Thanks

IMO any website that tries to automatically i18n based on the locale settings in the request is highly annoying.
I usually prefer English content because translations suck to my local language, yet I'm almost forced to use a localised operating system because it's very hard to get non-localised versions here.
Any automatically localised website would present me with a language I don't want, or worse with services I don't want (like Google, which defaults to searching websites in the language it autodetects rather than all sites).

  • Download local file using Servlet and JSP

    Hello,
    I will like to use a browser to download file on local system using serlvet and Jsp technology. Does anyone have any idea how to do it?
    Any comment will be appreciate.
    Thanks

    Well you can just put the file in a folder that is accessible to the web server. Then have a link point to that file. That will cause the web browser to download the file.

  • Locale-specific JSP page

    Hi,
    I want to provide internationalization in my web tier by providing locale-specific JSP pages rather than using resource bundles for the content inside the JSP page.
    In other words, I'd like to have a folder structure such that I have a default .jsp file in the root folder and locale-specific .jsp files under the locale folders as following:
      /jsp
          /index.jsp
          /en_US/
                 index.jsp
          /en_GB/
                 index.jspAnd depending on the default locale of the server (not user's). I'd like the appropriate index.jsp to be picked up at runtime.
    If the above is not possible, I even wouldn't mind using a locale suffix for the JSP files:
      /jsp
          /index.jsp
          /index_en_US.jsp
          /index_en_GB.jspIs there any way to do this?
    Thanks, Rishabh

    Well yeah, I did want the server to pick up the "best fit" JSP page automatically, going from specific to general. So if /en_US/index.jsp is missing, it should default to /index.jspSomewhat like how ResourceBundle handles property files.
    This approach is suggested in the Designing Enterprise Applications with the J2EE Platform book in the J2EE Internalization and Localization (http://java.sun.com/blueprints/guidelines/designing_enterprise_applications_2e/i18n/i18n4.html) section 10.3.3.5 - Locale-Specific JSP Pages. Of course here they use the users's locale from the request to do this. But using the default locale of the server should pretty much be the same thing.
    If the above doesn't really work, can anyone suggest how I can hook into the request handler or write a custom servlet filter as suggested by Ram to do this at a framework level so that it works for all my pages?
    Thanks, Rishabh

  • Locale and addXMLPath

    I've got a web app that runs from "/app", and my Flash
    control loads from "/flash". This control is localized and the
    language files are stored in "/flash/en", "/flash/ja", etc.
    However, the Flash app attempts to load it's resources from
    "/app/en", "/app/ja", etc. I was surprised by this-- I thought
    these files would load relative to the Flash object, not the URL of
    the host document.
    I'd like to control the full path to the language files, and
    I believe it is possible, but I'm having trouble. The
    "Locale.addXMLPath" method is (I think) the method I'm looking for,
    but so far I haven't gotten it to work.
    First of all, am I suppose to give it the path to the
    directory where the XML files live, or the path to the XML file
    itself?
    // Like this?
    Locale.addXMLPath("en", "/flash/en");
    // or...
    Locale.addXMLPath("en", "/flash/en/flash_obj_en.xml");
    Second, how should I configure the Flash control so that it
    delays the loading of the XML file until these paths are assigned?
    Configure for string replacement "automatically at runtime" or "via
    ActionScript at runtime"? I just don't want avoid having to invoke
    a method for every localized text field in the Flash control.
    I haven't found much on Google about "addXMLPath"-- the Flash
    documentation has an example, but the example doesn't actually
    *call* addXMLPath. And most user-written pages about it aren't in
    English. :)

    There's an internationalisation forum here. You might have more luck in there. As a starting point though, yes you can use it from a JSP, (although conventionally you'd have separate JSPs containing translations rather than dynamically include the text, it's a performance thing). I assume that you realise that it won't do the translation for you(?).

  • "where does firefox 'profiles' end up in Windows 7? I see there are duplicate 'default'profiles in a local and roaming folders.

    I am moving my 'profile' from one netbook (which uses Windows XP) to a newer netbook (using Windows 7 starter). I have found two folders off the 'users/(my name)/local' and 'users/(my name)/roaming' that seem to be duplicate default profile folders. When I copy my profile from the older netbook, how do I know which folder to put it into.
    Hope this is clear

    The profile folder in the path '''''users/(my name)/local''''' only contains the Cache folder/files and the Safe Browsing information (''urlclassifier3.sqlite'') and a couple of other files. You do NOT need to copy/transfer the files & folders in this path to your new notebook, as these files will be automatically rebuilt on the new notebook.

  • Hetrogenous join: ms access local and oracle on server

    Hello
    I want to know if it is possible to join tables from a local client ms access db and an oracle db on a server. I have used the link feature in ms access and the hsodbc feature of oracle, but the ms access db is local and the oracle is not. Is there anyway that I can control the local access db from a link from the oracle db on the remote server?
    Thanx

    There is no such facility as of now to acces Oracle table from DB2 database or anything.
    You can spool the data into flat file for MS access table and import that data into
    Oracle table.

  • I tried to update iTunes yesterday.  The update failed.  Now when I try to open iTunes it says that the version isn't localized and needs to be run in English.  It has never been in another language.

    I attempted to update iTunes yesterday.  The update failed.  iTunes now won't open and displays an error message that the program isn't localized and needs to be run in the English version.  I'm in the US and the computer and program has never been used in another language.  I tried reinstalling the full download for the new version and that failed as well.  I logged out; shut down; restarted; retried the update; etc.  Still no luck and the same message.  Thoughts?

  • How to use the same services-config for the local and remote servers.

    My flex project works fine using the below but when I upload my flash file to the server I doesn't work, all the relative paths and files are the same execpt the remote one is a linux server.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    I think the problem  is the line
            <endpoint uri="http://localhost/domainn.org/amfphp/gateway.php" class="flex.messaging.endpoints.AMFEndpoint"/>
    but I'm not sure how to use the same services-config for the local and remote servers.

    You are confusing "served from a web-server" with "compiled on a web-server". Served from a web-server means you are downloading a file from the web-server, it does not necessarily mean that the files has been generated / compiled on the server.
    The server.name and server.port tokens are replaced at runtime (ie. on the client when the swf has been downloaded and is running) not compile time (ie. while mxmlc / ant / wet-tier compiler is running). You do not need to compile on the server to take advantage of this.
    Hi Paul,
    In Flex, there is feature that lets developer to put all service-config.xml file configuration information into swf file. with
    -services=path/to/services-config.xml
    IF
    services-config.xml
    have tokens in it and user have not specified additional
    -context-root
    and this swf file is not served from web-app-server (like tomcat for example) than it will not work,
    Flash player have no possible way to replace token values of service-config.xml file durring runtime if that service-config.xml file have been baked into swf file during compilation,
    for example during development you can launch your swf file from your browser with file// protocol and still be able to access blazeDS services if
    -services=path/to/services-config.xml
    have been specified durring compilation.
    I dont know any better way to exmplain this, but in summary there is two places that you can tell swf  about service confogiration,
    1) pass -services=path/to/services-config.xml  parameter to compiler this way you tell swf file up front about all that good stuff,
    or 2) you put that file on the webserver( in this case, yes you should have replacement tokens in that file) and they will be repaced at runtime .

  • Ideas pls for a small application on java and jsp?

    hi ,
    I would like to create an application which for resume. I would like to codify the java code . The java code should be able to autogenerate jsp file's since the output of the resume would be on an jsp page. To add it simply a wizard for dynamic resume creation using java swings and jsp. Code for jsp should be autogenerated please note it.
    Ideas please!
    Thanks in advance

    I'd like to add more information to Patreck's suggestion.
    JSP pages are wonderful if you need the web server to perform some actions before sending you the final web page.
    Here, you don't need the web server to do anything because your Swing application can do it for you. As Patreck implies, Swing can make a connection to the database, retrieve any information you want, perform whatever logic you need, and write the output to an HTML file.
    To give you an example, you can use Internet Explorer to view a basic web page on your hard disk. You can also use Microsoft Word to view the same basic web page. They both do the same task and there is no need to force IE to use its Word plug-in in order to view the web page.
    JSPs are not necessary because Swing will do all of the work for you. You only need JSPs if you want people to use your program through a web browser because they can't do Swing inside a web browser. You should only use one or the other, not both. Understand now?
    If you really really must generate JSP code from a Swing application, then just write out the JSP stuff in the file. For example...
    public void createWebPage( Printwriter pw, String myName ) {
       pw.println( "<% String myJSPName = \"" + myName + "\" %>" );
       pw.println( "<HTML>");
       pw.println( "<HEAD>");
       pw.println( "<TITLE>My Resume</TITLE>" );
       pw.println( "</HEAD>");
       pw.println( "<BODY>" );
       pw.println( "<H1>My name is " + myName + " and my JSP name is <%= myJSPName %></H1>" );
       pw.println( "</BODY>" );
       pw.println( "</HTML>" );
    }As you can see, it's pointless to embed JSP when you can do all the programming within Swing first and just write out the correct response.

    Part 2: Install and configure Windows Server Essentials Experience role remotely
    In an existing domain environment
    In an existing domain environment, please use following command to provide credential and then add Server Essentials Role: (Figure 13)
    Add-WindowsFeature -Name ServerEssentialsRole
    -ComputerName xxx -Credential DomainName\DomainAccount
    Figure 13.
    After you enter the credential, it will start install Windows Server Essentials role on your computer. (Figure 14)
    Figure 14.
    After the installation completes, it will return the result as below:
    Figure 15.
    Next, please use the
    Enter-PSSession
    cmdlet and provide the correct credential to start an interactive session with a remote computer. You can use the commands below:
    Enter-PSSession –ComputerName
    xxx –Credential DomainName\DomainAccount (Figure 16)
    Figure 16.
    Then, please configure Server Essentials Role via
    Add-WssConfigurationService cmdlet and it also needs to provide correct credential. (Figure 17)
    Figure 17.
    After your credential is accepted, it will update and prepare your server. (Figure 18)
    Figure 18.
    After that, please type “Y” to continue to configure Windows Server Essentials. (Figure 19)
    Figure 19.
    2. In a non-domain environment
    In my test environment, I set up two computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and use Server1 as a target computer. The IP addresses for the two computers are as
    below:
    Sevrer1: 192.168.1.54
    Server2: 192.168.1.53
    Run
    Enable-PSRemoting –Force on Server1. (Figure 20)
    Figure 20.
    Since there is no existing domain, it is necessary to add the target computer (Server1) to a TrustedHosts list (maintained by WinRM) on Server 2. We can use following command
    to
    add the TrustedHosts entry:
    Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Client\TrustedHosts IP-Address
    (Figure 21)
    Figure 21.
    Next, we can use
    Enter-PSSession
    cmdlet and provide the correct credential to start an interactive session with the remote computer. (Figure 22)
    Figure 22.
    After that, you can install Windows Server Essentials Experience Role remotely via Add-WindowsFeature ServerEssentialsRole cmdlet. (Figure 23)
    Figure 23.
    From figure 24, we can see that the installation is completed.
    Figure 24.
    Then you can use
    Start-WssConfigurationService cmdlet to configure Essentials Role and follow the steps in the first part (configure Windows Server Essentials Experience in a non-domain environment) as the steps would be the same.
    The figure below shows the status of Windows Server Essentials.
    Figure
    25.
    Finally, we have successfully configured Windows Server Essentials on Server1. (Figure 26)
    Figure 26.

  • Local and ISP DNS

    Hi all,
    i have a local DNS server for some local stuff like website,ldap and so on and the normal ISP DNS.
    On Client i have entered the local DNS IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and the ISP DNS IP (yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy).
    So here is my problem when the Local DNS IP is on top of the table i can surf only the local websites but not the public. vice versa is it for when i have the ISP DNS IP on top. what can i do to surf all website, the local and the public.

    Your DNS is asking a "lame" server for DNS; you're not getting an authoritative response to the query.
    The target DNS server for the query isn't configured correctly; the local DNS server has found a target DNS server for the domain as being authoritative for the zone, but the target DNS server is not configured as being authoritative for the zone.
    i configured my router for forwarding the port 53 to my local dns, but it didn't solved the problem!
    That's not what I'd choose here.
    Your clients are aimed at your DNS server. Your DNS server is aimed at your ISP servers. Your firewall is set to pass DNS out, but (generally) to block inbound DNS requests. Your DHCP is set to serve your DNS server address. If you've been tossing configuration changes and such here within your clients and your DNS servers, then you may well have some stale stuff in the DNS caches, too.

  • Setting Locale and Hostname on New Installation Fails

    Hello,
    Tried doing an Arch install on my Acer Aspire One D255 today, but when I try to set the hostname and locale while chroot'ed into /mnt, I get:
    Failed to get D-Bus connection: Failed to connect to socket /run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
    This occurs when running hostnamectl and localectl as per the Beginners' Guide. I had to set the locale manually in /etc/locale.conf, but I don't know what to do about the hostname, and something seems to indicate there's a more serious issue.
    Any idea?

    ifaigios wrote:I edited Beginner's Guide yesterday replacing the old method of setting the default locale and the hostname, with localectl and hostnamectl. However, as you discovered, it seems that these commands require DBus to be running to work, so they are of no use in the chroot. Thankfully, thestinger  reverted my edits as soon as you found out the problem, so the page contains the correct information again. I am sorry for the inconvenience and for any trouble I caused.
    No problem, thanks for helping! However, I think you missed a few 'systemctl' commands. There's three here and one here. I don't know how to fix them, so for now I'll just configure them on reboot.
