Location Services on a MacBook Pro

Hi.
I just noticed that OS X includes a setting that allows one to enable/disable location services in the security preference panel.
I skimmed through the documentation for the CLLocationManager class. It makes specific note of the differences between implementation on iPhone OS and Mac OS X, but it is void of any information about which OS X-based devices support location services. It's plainly evident the usefulness and underpinning of this feature on an iPhone with GPS, but on any other hardware it's not clear to me how location services acquires coordinates.
Can anyone tell me if Location Services actually does anything on a MacBook or MacBook Pro? If it does, what does it use to determine geographic location?
Thanks much.

Yes - it does work - it uses the visible WiFi networks to determine your location (same as you get on an iPod Touch which doesn't have a GPS chip).
You can see it in action by checking the "Set time zone automatically using current location" in the TimeZone pane of the Date & Time System Preferences.

  • Getting Service for my MacBook Pro

I bought the MacBook Pro around the first of April this year and have overall been happy with the exception of two problems. First, the computer fails to recognize the Airport card (in either OSX or XP). It is like it is not plugged in. This occurs after the computer is used for an extended period and seems to be related to heat. After a couple of hours, everything works fine again until it gets hot. The second problem is similar in that it a loud snapping noise comes from the speakers, again after the computer is operated for an extended period. I called Apple service and updated the firmware but still no resolution to the problem. Apple support suggested that I take the computer to a local warranty center. In Louisville, KY, (where I am located) the Apple website listed two locations, CompUSA and Mactown.
I carried the computer to CompUSA first and was advised that it would be a few days before they could look at it. And, they could not give me a time estimate for the repair, though it shouldn't take more than two weeks even if they have to send the computer back to Apple. After they fumbled around with the paperwork for about 15 minutes, I decided not to leave my $2500 laptop with them.
I then called Mactown and was told that it would be about 10 days before they could look at the computer, unless I paid $50 to move to the front of the line.
Finally, I called Apple back and made arrangements for them to send a shipping box so that the unit could be returned to them for repair. I was advised that the repair sould be completed in 5 to 7 days (including shipping). DHL picked up the computer this afternoon.
Is this as good as it gets with Apple service? I have owned Dells for the last 8 years and have only had to return a computer once for repair. In that case, an overnight delivery service came to my location with a shipping box and picked up the computer. It was repaired at Dell the next day, and shipped to the location I planned to be at the following day. That was the standard service, I had not paid extra for this service.
Consequently, this message is being posted from my Toshiba Qosmio 17" laptop (which has not required service).

If not, you should be able to find a printer share app to print across the internet to his printer using your 4G connection.

  • How do I get support service for my MacBook Pro that was purchased in the U.S. if I'm traveling internationally?

My MacBook Pro (purchased August 2010) crashed at the beginning of a 2 month trip in India. Whenever I turn it on, I get either a grey screen or the apple logo and then a message telling me to restart my comp (this happens when I try to boot from the disc).  I've done everything short of cracking the case open to reposition the HD, and that's only becuase I can't get my hands on a adequately sized screwdriver.
Any thoughts?  How do I get my computer services while in India? I'd be okay with shipping, but I can't even get a hold of apple without spending an astronomical amount in cell-phone fees.  Help?

If this happens when you try to start from the installer DVD, then you have a hardware problem. Getting it repaired in India probably isn't easy to do. You could arrange with Apple to ship back to the US, but you would need to arrange with AppleCare for that.
    You might try Apple's India support numbers: (91) 1800 4250 744 or (91) 80-4140-9000.

  • Service Battery on MacBook Pro -Mavericks 10.9.4

Upgraded my 2 Months old MacBook Pro 13 Inch retina to 10.9.4 on 1 July 2014. Cannot pin point when this message started displaying but for sure this is after 1 July 2014 as I do monitor battery consumed cycles.
At present it is 19 cycles consumed, machine is always on a power source with a backup and hence minimal battery cycles.  All my other laptops[Non Apple products] perfectly work on this setup.
My work place is a bit remote in mountains and hence nearest service centre is bit far from where I work. Is there a software glitch attached to recent update which I can manage for about a week or 2 or a serious issue with Battery which needs immediate attention?
Regret reposting as there might be other threads but guess none covers whether it requires an immediate fix.

You can try Resetting the System Management Controller, but probably you will have to take it in for warranty work.

  • Transfering cell phone info from my old blackberry that has a shattered screen and no service to my macbook pro using 10.6 SL

Ok some people just don't fit like the rest, and in this world I am fine with that! My situation is as the title reads I just entered, I have my old blackberry cell ph. screen is shattered and no service, it holds information and misc files I would like to be able to transfer to my macbook pro I own and currently am using 10.6 Snow Leapord. Is there anyone willing to give a round peg some square help that reads like ABC please? If a free app or like info exist that would be great, but what is most easy and painless would work, all of life's little charges will surly suck the sanity out of my sole way before the life is gone as it seems.
Thank you for the time and patience I am grateful more than at times I seem to be able to express being!
Phone is a Blackberry Perl************ (POS)*************** THE POS PART IS ONLY MY ADDED FEELINGS AT THE MOMENT PLEASE EXCUSE.

Ok the phone does get noticed and files come into a view that does allow me to see they exist, but I was thinking their must be an app or widget or WTEver they are allowing those files to be open.
Because what good is seeing a file exist that you cant view and open?
Maybe I worded my question wrong, I thought there is something a person would know of that allows the function of me connecting and reading the files to transfer and use?
Communication is such a fine line if the desired effect is understanding the whole process, like reading a file you know exist, because chances are human mental memory is not so good to completely recall its entire content.
I need this macbook to open blackberry phone files making them readable to be transferred like to a place I could recall phone numbers for future use?? ANY HELP THERE?
    Thanks a lot David Bro

depends where you're looking - it's on the lower right if you're looking at it from the top.
it's on the lower left if you flip it over - bottom side up

  • SERVICE BATTERY ON MACBOOK PRO 13" MID2010

I replaced the battery on my MACBOOKPRO 13" with an OEM battery but the battery indicator still says "Service Battery".
I did an SMC reset and nothing happened. I tried to restart and the message is still there.
It is charging just fine and holds the charge but the message "Service Battery" bothers me.
    Thanks for your help.

Download, install and run this little gem. It tells you a lot about the state of the battery. It's free, but you can make a donation to the folks that made it.

  • Will Remote Desktop allow me to access and use my Mac Pro 2009 from my MacBook Pro 2011?

Own a small business, have two locations, I need to use Windows via Parallels on my Mac Pro 2009, but I am forced to spend most of my time at the other location which has a MacBook Pro 2011. Will Remote Desktop allow me to use the MacBook Pro 2011 to access the Mac Pro and use Windows via Parallels?

If all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be overkill. If the systems have Mac OS X 10.5 or later you can use the Screen Sharing built into those versions of Mac OS X to control the system.
Another and perhaps easier option is to use a service such as LogMeIn or TeamViewer. Either option may be significantly easier than dealing with screen sharing or ARD.
You'll want to confirm that any solution you choose will work with Parallels, of course. I haven't tried remote control of a system to use Parallals, so there may be special considerations there. If you don't get useful comments here, you might try Parallels' forums.
    Regards.

  • MacBook pro 13" 2010 hard drive died in less than 2 months, what to do

Hey apple forums, ran into issues today and I want to know how to handle the situation. I bought a MacBook pro 13" (2010) model on may 1st 2010, it died 9 days latter, best buy replaced it free of charge (even though I had to fight them to do so) this next one ran fine from may 9th 2010 to June 22 2010, just shy of two months. What happened? The **** hard drive died (which by the way is a crappy seagate, I only buy western digital drives as they have NEVER failed me in the 10 years I have used them). The way i know this is because I am a pc repair technician and have run diagnostics and they all say drive is dead. When boot up (or attempt) the apple logo pops up and shows a progress bar (which I have never seen before) it stays on for 10 seconds and then disappears, then the normal circle loading animation begins, then my MacBook pro starts getting ridiculously hot and never loads up Mac os x 10.6.4. I am then forced to hold the power button for 10 seconds to kill the power. I can boot into windows 7 which tells me that it is strongly recommended to perform a disk check which hangs midway, or if I cancel it before it starts I can boot in to a working copy of windows 7. If I access or attach a external hard drive I get a blue screen that says "applehfs.dll" is the cause of the blue screen.
I did force boot the Mac os x install DVD and used the disk utility to first verify permissions and it came up with god knows how many errors, but won't let me repair permissions (it is grey out). So I proceed to do a disk volume check, it stops and says it is strongly recommended to backup as many files as possible and reformat the hard drive. I do have the equipment to recover data, however my concern is getting the hard drive replaced under warranty. Being a it support personnel I need my computer asap, it isn't my problem that the hard drive died so I am not going to just buy a new one, how does apple go about replacing NOT repairing the hard drive.
This is what I want, go to the apple store with my Macbook pro and my craftsman set of #000 screw drivers and take the hard drive out myself, hand the hard drive to the "genius" (which by the way are un qualified in my opinion to service my $1200 Macbook pro, as they scratched my first MacBook pro, and stripped the screws. Sorry Apple but you lost my trust). Have the genius hand me a replacement hard drive, I place that back into my MacBook pro and be on my merry way home to reinstall all of my programs and restore my data.
Is this a reasonable request and do you think apple will give me a hard time?
    Thanks to all the help,
    Jakthebomb

No, that isn't a reasonable request, and it's not going to happen that way. If you want Apple to warrant your new drive, Apple will insist on installing it. If you want to choose your new hard drive, you'll have to buy and install it at your own expense. Given your impatience, your prejudices, and your low opinion of Apple service, that's certainly what you should do. In addition to getting your preferred drive and installing it on your own schedule, you'll get a much longer warranty than Apple would give you on it, and you'll get to keep the old drive to recover data from it if necessary (Apple would keep it if they replaced it.) Installing a new drive yourself will have no effect on the Apple warranty covering the rest of the machine, and being an IT professional, you can probably buy a new hard drive for even less than we ordinary mortals pay for them nowadays.
So yes, Apple owes you a new drive, but if you can't accept the terms on which Apple will provide it, by all means just buy and install one yourself and get on with your life.

  • Airport Internet to Macbook Pro to Powermac G5 via Firewire

    Hello,
I am having signal reception issues with my powermac and airport network. To get around this, I connect my powermac to the macbook pro via an ethernet cable and share internet (this is great for moving the files I do back and forth) so I am ok with the arrangement.
The problem is that I want to share the iTunes library that is on the powermac to my apple tv. The powermac and macbook recognize eachother's libraries, and the macbook connected to the airport network is syncing/sharing with the airport.
I know it because somehow the powermac is on a different network, but I would think there is some way to make it show up on all the airport connected devices even though it has to connect via the firewire.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I know this sounds a little convoluted, but hopefully it is decipherable.
    Kind thanks!

The iTunes sharing won't cross a subnet.
The Internet sharing service on the MacBook Pro is creating a subnet to allow the Mac Pro access. There is no way to configure Internet sharing so that it does not create this subnet.

Can I subscribe to HBOGO thru Apple TV and avoid cable service using my MacBook Pro as the host for projecting to my TV via AppleTV?S

    Possibly.
Some sites such as TMN GO which is similar will not allow mirroring to take place.
