Locked at load screen  apple thingy twirls....had it on for over an hour, have tried using the Shift key....no luck...the grey screen of patience testing is winning

so i decided to use my old 15 inch macbook, circa 2008, (around christmas i got it) as my hard drive for my sonos system,   ok, that's too much info.  the nuts and bolts of it, is that my macbook is plugged in, and starts with the gray screen and the little twirly gadget, but hence it moves forward no more...i have tried the Safe start, although i'm not sure how long you have to hold the command  button....just trying to get this baby back among the living   i submit to you who have chosen to read this and am as pliable as warm play doh.   i'm not sure i can find the boot up disks, as i moved recently...but other than those simingly insurmountable issues its just wonderful to be on the right side of the grass.....back to you community!

Well the next step, while it should not cause data loss, at least has the potential to lose your data. That would be reinstalling the OS. It is also possible that the data is already gone though I hope that is not so. If you decide you want to procede, boot again to the Snow Leopard (10.6) install DVD and work through the installer. Choose reinstall when asked what you want to do. Do NOT choose erase and install as that would definitely lose your data.
I'll keep my fingers crossed. Please in the future make sure your important data is backed up.
