Newbie help me obi wans: ...coded locked by template or translator
Hi Folks,
I'm such a newbie to DW I've been using it for a few years actually, but in a very basic sense.
I dloaded a template, added some graphics, made some buttons etc.. and of course text, but when it comes to coding,
I've only figure out how to add spaces lol
I'm trying to add a flash video to my samples page. I can add images, but every time I add the .flv, I receive the subject message.
So here are 2 issues:
1. I don't know if this related to #2, but I can't erase the 3rd column...or even use it. it's locked - I see a circle with a line through it. The template I bought did say it was 3 columns, but I don't understand why I can't touch it. I've attached a tiff of what it looks like right now.
2. as the subject says "changing code is locked by the template is locked a template or translator" is giving me grief.
I've reviewed the previous posts on the subject, but I'm afraid my newbie-ness has left me not knowing what to do. ie. I can't find a time/date to change...I see the <head> and <script>, but they're greyed out on the one page I'm trying to edit. They're not greyed out on the template page however.
I also tried saving my .dwt as a new template, but that didn't work either.
Here is code for my Samples page. I'll post the code for the template page under that.

Any help is hugely appreciated.
Cheers
keeblerthanks for the quick reply!
I found the 2 things to change, but when I go back to my page...everything is gone! eek
(fear no panic - I did back up my website prior to making any changes
(file attached).
it looks like there is only 1 column instead of 3 sections. I was hoping to lose just the one on the right.
here is the new code from my Samples page (not the template) I"ll post that below.

How to Lock particular template for user editing.
Hi Gurus,
we have some templates created on top of infoset querrys to display the output in specific format. I want to lock particular templates for user modification. That means when the user is trying to change the template layout and try to save with the same name it should not allow to do that. if the user wants in another name then it must allow the user to do that.
How can i achieve that.
Thanks in Advance.
Appreciate your help.Use a naming convention on templates with a particular prefix, ie ZCORP***. Then create an authorization object that specifies that templates with the prefix ZCORP cannot be changed or deleted. The user will be able to changed and save under a different name, but not the same one.
Thanks for any points assigned.

Can I lock the template?
Help!! I have another problem. I want to lock the template so that no one can change the layout unless they have a password. I just want it to be a form with drop downs, and an area that they can enter text - but other than that - I want it to stay locked. Is that possible??
You probably mean can you lock the spreadsheet/document. The answer is that you can lock tables and they will be un-editable and unmovable. However, the table where you want people to enter data cannot be locked. A user could move that unlocked table around on the page or delete it altogether if they chose to do so. Also, the only password protection is for the entire document; anyone who can use the spreadsheet can go to the Arrange menu and unlock a locked table. Basically you can't do what I think you want to do, which is to lock everything down so it is unmovable and un-editable but leaving one cell unlocked for data entry by the user.
The closest solution I have is to create two tables. The first is the main table with all your functions. That table will be locked. The second is a table with only one cell, and it is unlocked. You can place the second table over the first so it looks like one table if you want to. You could also make the second table the exact same size as the first table and set it on top of the first table. You will have to set the fill to none so you can see the table underneath. Each of these has advantages and disadvantages so you'll have to see which you like best if you decide to do this. -
Locking editable template regions to Contribute users only
Hi,
I would like to know if it's possible to lock some editable
template regions to Contribute users only? We need to have these
regions editable through Dreaweaver so our site designers can still
modify them. I'm not talking about the "Optional region" here, just
a "regular" editable region.
Thank you,
Stéphane Braultthere's no option to restrict access to contribute users only
when using Dreamweaver templates.. but a possible dirty workaround
would be to place those editable regions inside dynamic code (ASP,
PHP, JSP, etc..) as Contribute won't be able to interpret them..
they won't be visible in Contribute -
Page Properties Locked by Template
I am getting this error when I click on the Page Properties
button: "All of this page's properties are locked by a template, so
you can't edit them."
When I look at the template in Dreamweaver they don't appear
to be locked and when I compare the template to a template from
another site (that doesn't have this problem in Contribute) they
are identical.
What am I missing?Yes, be sure of where the editable regions are defined in
your code to make sure you don't accidentally have some weird piece
of code or a tag wrapped in an 'editable region' tag.
Also, is the file locked by Contribute? Is the Edit button
available? If the page is locked, the page properties may be locked
as well. -
Hi,
I'm new to Contribute ....as will be obvious from the
following question!
I would be very grateful if someone could explain how I can
use Dreamweaver 8 to lock any HTM file on my website that is NOT
based on a template. Is this possible?
Best wishes
Simon RCLYes. I've constructed a website which has been up and running
for some time using DW8 ...and which hasn't been based on
templates. I've now installed Contribute 3 to it from a remote PC
...and have successfully made a linked to it. Although I can upload
text and images OK using Contribute I haven't been able to change
the Permission settings in DW to prevent changes being made to any
of the files, - including index.htm!
I note that the Contribute Administration tools in DW refer
to permission settings for folders ...but not for individual files.
I've been searching Tom Negrino's book on Contribute 3 and
can't find a answer. I'd be very grateful for your help! -
Rel="stylesheet" in template causes Contribute to crash
After years of no problems with their site, my client was
suddenly unable to login to their site using Contribute 3.
Contribute would crash during "Updating Templates" screen.
The problem turned out to be a rel="stylesheet" in an
absolute link to a style sheet.
Example:
This crashes Contribute 3:
<link href="
http://wwww.mysite.com/css/style.css"
rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
This does not:
<link href="
http://wwww.mysite.com/css/style.css"
type="text/css">
The doc type was:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01
Transitional//EN"
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
And the stylesheet link is in the <head>.
Go figure.
Hopefully this posting will spare someone else the headache.Suggest you do an F1 (help) search on Design Time Stylesheets.

Testing dreamweaver templates in contribute
I have a client that wants me to set up a template for
sending mass HTML e-mail that they can edit in contribute. I have
set up the page and template in dreamwever and want to post and
test. Is there any easy way to do this without setting up a full
fledged contribute server. Any help would be great. How are they going to send the mail, from their own computer
using an emailclient or from a server, using a database and script?
When they use an emailclient like Outlook Express, you could
save the html file based on the template on their computer and make
it available as newsletter in Outlook Express (send it BCC, cause
otherwise eveyone gets all the email addresses).
Your client could edit this file using Contribute (in the
menu go to File, Open, Edit the file in edit mode and save the
file). -
Opening a dreamweaver template in Contribute
I am trying to open a template I have created in Dreamweaver
with Contribute to test it out. However, when I try to open the DWT
file in Contribute, it gives me "Contribute cannot edit this type
of file" message. What am I doing wrong?Yep - can't do dat.

Apply a new template in Contribute?
Have an existing site in Contribute that has hundreds of pages. How do I update the template applied to all of the pages? I had 2 ideas:
1) Edit the existing template, keeping all the file and editable region names the same (thinking that the next time the page pulls the template, it will pull the new content).
2) Creating a new template with the same editable region names and finding a command to apply the template to all of the pages.
Suggestions?Hi,
This can be easily done if you have Dreamweaver. In Dreamweaver, connect to your website, edit the template which you want to change. Make your changes to it, and save it. Then, it will ask whether you want to make changes to the web pages based on this template, click Update to update the changes, or if you do not need to update, you can click Don't Update. Dreamweaver checks out the web pages, and makes the changes.
Hope this helps. -
Saving reformatted sample templates in Contribute CS3 for reuse
i have taken a sample template and reworked it so that it
works for our organization - and used this reformated template to
create our home page. Now I would like to save that augmented
template so that I can use it as my base template to create the
other pages for the website. How can I do that?I found a LiveDocs page which gives troubleshooting info "templates not showing up in Contribute". It gives the following reasons why a template would not be shown:
Templates not downloaded correctly.
This doesn't seem possible because all the templates were initially in the list and then one goes missing (after it has been used to create a page)
The permission group the user belongs to might not have access to that template.
I have checked the user permissions under "New Pages" in the Administer Website options and the user can use all templates.
Check templates have .dwt extension
They do.
Check templates are in the /Templates directory
Checked and they are.
Does anyone have any ideas why a template would suddenly go missing in Contribute?
Thanks -
Non-Dreamweaver templates for Contribute
Are there any guidelines anywhere for creating the equivalent
of Contribute editable/non-editable templates for sections of HTML
pages which were not created by Dreamweaver; for example,
guidelines on the use of <!-- begineditable--> etc.?Ian,
The Dreamweaver template system works from the standpoint of
a "deny all, allow some" mentality.
Initially a Dreamweaver template file allows no editing to
any sections. When modifying the template in Dreamweaver or any
other text editor, the addition of the begin/end editable pairs
enables the editing of any content existing within the tag pair.
If you want to create a template for use with Contribute
outside of Dreamweaver just create the file with any editable
sections you desire then change the file extension to .dwt and
place it in the "Templates" directory on your CPS managed
webserver. Any files in the "Templates" directory that end with
".dwt" will be loaded on the next startup of the Contribute client.
By default the Publisher and Writer roles allow access to all
templates in the "Templates" directory via the Contribute client.
Also, make sure that the "whatever" text mentioned by Murray
is unique to each individual editable region.
Please note that the Contribute/Dreamweaver template
interaction is *not* a run-time template system. Dreamweaver
templates are design-time templates. If you have sections of the
template that change later then those changes will need to be
applied on a page-by-page basis to each page using a given
template. This functionality is automatically handled within the
Macromedia workflow by using Dreamweaver to download the entire
site then having it update all pages that are based on a given
template.
The piece of the code that denotes which template is assigned
to a given page is as follows:
<!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/level2.dwt"
codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
with an acompanying closing tag of:
<!-- InstanceEnd -->
The "InstanceBegin" tag should follow the opening html tag
and the "InstanceEnd" tag should precede the closing html tag.
The important piece of the "InstanceBegin" tag is the value
of the "template" attribute. This needs to be the path to the
specific template file relative to the webroot on the server.
Hope this helps. -

Updating templates in Contribute - future release?
Hello
I know this question has been asked time and time again, but
I wanted to take the topic a step further.
I know in order to update templates (dwt's) in a
Contribute-based site, you have to:
* Download the site locally if it's a remote site
* Update the pages with the revised template
* Reupload the site to the remote site
There just seems to me that there's got to be an easier way
to do it than this. Honestly, I would have used Server Side
Includes when I switched to using dwt's if I had fully understood
that the site doesn't have some automated way of updating the site
through Contribute. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until part
way through our redesign implementation, UGH.
I guess my question is, are there any plans in the next
release of Contribute to allow some automated way of updating the
pages through Contribute when a template is changed? To me this is
a REALLY NEEDED feature. It now takes me longer to make template
updates than it did prior to using Contribute/Dreamweaver.
Thank you - LainieBefore you make any changes, perform a Get (down arrow icon in the Files menu) operation to download any client-updated files first. That way, your local files will be exact duplicates of what the client has placed on the server. After verifying you have the most recent versions, make your change and upload.
