  • Log files full of service broker errors, but it works OK

We have a C# web application that is using SQL dependency to expire cached query data. Although everything is working okay we are seeing a lot of errors being generated particularly in our production environment.
The first error messages is this:
Service Broker needs to access the master key in the database 'SubscriberManager'. Error code:32. The master key has to exist and the service master key encryption is required.
It shows up in both the server event log and the SQL server log files. I believe the actual content of the messages something of a red herring as I have created a database master key.
    I have also tried
Recreating both the service master key and the database master key.
Made sure the database owner is sa.
Made sure the user account has permissions to create services, queues, procedures and subscribe query notifications
Made sure the broker is enabled
I have seen other people with similar errors whilst researching the issue but the error code almost always seems to be 25 or 26 not 32. I have been unable to find anything that tells me what these error codes mean so I'm not sure of the significance.
Also I am seeing a lot of errors like this:
The query notification dialog on conversation handle '{2FA2445B-1667-E311-943C-02C798B618C6}.' closed due to the following error: '-8490Cannot find the remote service 'SqlQueryNotificationService-7303d251-1eb2-4f3a-9e08-d5d17c28b6cf' because
    it does not exist.'.
I understand that a certain number of these are normal due to the way that SqlDependency.Stop doesn't clean everything up in the database, but we are seeing thousands of these on one of our production servers.
What is frustrating as we have been using SQL notifications for several years now without issue so something must have changed in either our application or the server setups to cause this but at this point I have no idea what.
The applications are .net 4.0 MVC and WCF running on Windows 2012 servers calling SQL 2012 servers also running on Windows 2012.

    Hi Mark,
    1. for your question about possible memory pressure, if the used memory is below the Max Server Memory, then it's OK. If you have not set Max Server Memory, you should at least leave 4GB for your x64 system.
    2. for your original question, I suggest you can check my actions below:
    a. run this statement:
    Select name, is_master_key_encrypted_by_server
    from sys.databases
    Where name =
    'your_database_name'
if the value of "is_master_key_encrypted_by_server" equals to "0", it means the database does not have a encrypted master key.
b.if there is no encrypted master key, then the error may be hit by the "begin dialog conversation" statement (you can check your sql profiler trace to check".
"Service Broker dialog security lets your application use authentication, authorization, or encryption for an individual dialog conversation (or dialog). By default,
all dialog conversations use dialog security. When you begin a dialog, you can explicitly allow a dialog to proceed without dialog security by including the ENCRYPTION = OFF clause on the BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION statement. However, if a remote service binding
exists for the service that the conversation targets, the dialog uses security even when ENCRYPTION = OFF."
Workarounds can be disabling the dialog security (using encryption = off) or create a master key. You can find more information in about URL.

  • SCOM2012 - SQL 2012 DB Log File Discovery isssue

    Dear Experts,
I have some SQL 2012 servers, that has few log files (.LDF) stored in a specific drive. SCOM discovers these files but, has a wrong value in 'Display Name'.
For example. The log file name on the server is PROD and the file path c:\SQL\PROD.LDF, but in the console it shows name as UAT and file path as c:\SQL\PROD.LDF (file path is correct as expected). It always stays in critical state stating that the log file
is out of space while it is not the case.
We even have tried wiping the agent off the server and reinstalling it. But it did not fix the issue. When I remove the agent 'Operations Manager' under event log disappears, but when I reinstall the agent after few days, I see the log created,
but with older events too dated well prior to the uninstallation.
And the other thing is, we had this issue while using 2007 R2 and even after switching over to 2012 it continues.
SCOM 2012 was a fresh setup and was not an upgrade.
Hope someone could help me out with this.
    Regards,
    Saravanan

    Hi Niki,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
I hope the image can explain better. I have that log file on a SQL server, which is being discovered with a wrong File name but with the correct path. The actual file name what I see on the server is exactly the same as it shows in the File path in console.
But 'File Name' in the console is completely irrelevant. Also, this log file is in critical state for log file full, which is statistically false. There are few other log files on this server, for which we do not have this issue.
Please let me know if any other information would be required
    Regards,
    Saravanan

this is because of a problem at the WS server (it might mostly be a windows server).
You can request the WS team to have a look into this issue. it is not a PI problem.

  • How to Recover database from old backup and full archive log file

    Hi Oracle expert!
I met problem when restore my oracle database.

How can i restore my database to 05-Nov?

    - but when I select Data from table created between 01-Nov to 05-Nov, it not found!
Not the same way the step:
SQL> RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE UNTIL CANCEL?
It apply newest the same archived log i had table created between 01-Nov to 05-Nov.
How can i do with RMAN to recover my table? That is not possible,if your all available archive logs applied using rman or through sqlplus(recover database using backup controlfile until cancel) and one of these logs contain your table then there are not any problems. So there are not any difference between recovery using rman and user managed(using sqlplus),but there main matter is applying all archive logs.So first check through rman list copy of archivelog all or list backup of archivelog all and identify there in rman repository is any information or not about these logs.

NO Server cannot shutdown due to log file getting filled for a database.Application might crash which is accessing this database.Or if a transaction is running it will stop and and will try to rollback but will not be able to as log will not grow ,so this can
    cause DB in recovery

    Hi,
    It seems that the audit log mechanism is activated, at your system. But, if you didn't set the parameter DIR_AUDIT, audit log will be created under "/usr/sap/<SID>/<instance>/log", not "data" folder. You can check its default value on RZ11. Revise the parameters, below;
    DIR_AUDIT = <path>
    FN_AUDIT = audit_++++++++.AUD
    rsau/enable = 1
    rsau/max_diskspace/local = <SizeOfFile>

    Hello,
Instead of Putting limit on trn log it would be good to find out cause causing high utilization.Even if you find that your log is growing because of some transaction it would be a blunder to rollback its little easy to do it for Index rebuild but if you
cancel for some delete operation you would end up in mess. Please don't create a program to delete or kill running operation.
You can create custom job for alert for trn log file growth. That would be good.
From 2008 onwards Index rebuild is fully logged so sometimes it causes trn log issue. To solve this either you run index rebuild for specific tables or for selective tables.
Other option is widely accepted Ola Hallengren script for index rebuild.I suggest you try this

  • Database Log File getting full by Reindex Job

    Hey guys
I have an issue with one of my databases during Reindex Job.  Most of the time, the log file is 99% free, but during the Reindex job, the log file fills up and runs out of space, so the reindex job fails and I also get errors from the DB due to log
    file space.  Any suggestions?

Please note changing to BULK LOGGED recovery will make you loose point in time recovery. Because alter index rebuild would be minimally logged and for the time period this job is running you loose point in time recovery so take step accordingly. Plus you
need to take log backup after changing back to Full recovery
I guess Ola's script would suffice if not you would have to increase space on drive where log file is residing. Index rebuild is fully logged in full recovery.

  • Unable to delete records as the transaction log file is full

My disk is running out of space and as a result I decided to free some space by deleting old data. I tried to delete 100,000 by 100,000 as there are 240 million records to be deleted. But I am unable to delete them at once and shrinking the database doesn't
free much space. This is the error im getting at times.
The transaction log for database 'TEST_ARCHIVE' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases
How can I overcome this situation and delete all the old records? Please advice.
    mayooran99

In order to delete the SQL Server need to write the information in the log file, and you do not have the place for those rows in the log file. You might succeeded to delete less in each time -> next backup the log file each time -> next shrink the
log file... but this is not the way that I would chose.
Best option is probably to add another disc (a simple disk do not cost a lot), move the log file there permanently. It will increase the database work as well (it is highly recommend not to put the log file on the same disk as the data file in most cases).
If you can't add new disk permanently then add one temporary. Then add file to the database in this disk -> create new table in this disk -> move all the data that you do
not want to delete to the new table -> truncate the current table -> bring back the data om the new table -> drop the new table and the new file to release the temporary disk.
Are you using full mode or simple recovery mode ?
    * in full mode you have to backup the log file if you want to shrink it

  • Question about full backup and Transaction Log file

I had a query will taking full backup daily won't allow my log file to grow as after taking the full backup I still see the some of the VLF in status 2. It went away when I manually took the backup of log file. I am bit confused shall I
perform backup of transaction log and full database backup daily to avoid such things in future also until I run shrinkfile the storage space from server won't get reduced right.

yes, full backup does not clear log file only log backup does. once the log backup is taken, it will set the inactive vlfs in the log file to 0.
you should perform log backup as the per your business SLA in data loss.
Go ahead and ask this to yourself:
If  a disaster strikes and your database server is lost and your only option is restore it from backup,
how much data loss can your business handle??
the answer to this question is how frequently your log backup should be?
if the answer is 10 mins, you should have log backups every 10 mins atleast.
if the answer is 30 mins, you should have log backups every 30 mins atleast.
if the answer is 90 mins, you should have log backups every 90 mins atleast.
so, when you restore, you will restore latest fullbackup+differential(latest one taken after restored fullback)
and all the logbackups taken since the latest(restored full or differential backup).
there several resources on web, inculding youtube videos, that explain these concepts clearly.i advice you to look at them.
to release the file space to OS, you should the shrink the file. log file shrink happens from the end upto the point it reaches an active vlf.
if there are no inactive vlf's in the end, despite how many inactive vlf's the log file has in the begining, the log file is not shrinkable
    Hope it Helps!!

  • Tempdb log file is full

    Hi DBA's,
my tempdb log file is 500mb size , auto growth enabled and log file used max.
now I am unable to insert or update and it is allowing only read operations.
what to do in this situation ?

is it 500 mb or gb??
either way, 500mb is too small and 500 gb is too big for a log file and you need fix that.
if it is 500 mb, i would not worr much but increase the file size. do you have space on the existing disk to accomddate some growth to the log file.
if not, can you add nother log file on another disk and presize it correctly(to more optimal size)
and when possible , remove the old 500mb log file and restart the server. you do not necessarily need multiple log file drives.
if it is 500 GB, there must some large open transactions and may be the growth was linear.
to find the current size of tempdb
    sp_helpdb 'TempDB'
    select Name,((size*8)/1024) as SIZE_IN_MB from Tempdb.sys.database_files
    Hope it Helps!!
