Logic express vs Cubase ?

I'm a guitarist doing fairly basic multi-track recording at home. I used to use Cubase on my PC. Now on the Mac, I use Garage Band, but would like an application that is a bit more powerful.
Regarding Cubase vs Logic express, are they similar? pros and cons? are they compatible?
Thanks

Logic and Cubase are fairly similar as DAWs. They do same things actually. And they are not entirely compatible (one cannot swap projects between these two programs). As a guitarist you'd find LE9 an awesome DAW. And it's actually cheaper than Cubase.

  • Logic Express 9 running with Tascam US-122 - possible?

    Hello,
I've been scouring support forums and the Logic user manual all day and unfortunately cannot seem to find an answer to this:
Is it at all possible to run Logic Express 9 with the Tascam US-122?
I've just converted from PC to Mac in the last couple of weeks: all of my software and drivers are all up-to-date so that should not be an issue. Obviously that means that I've previously been using my Tascam with Cubase on the PC, and I was really hoping it would cope with Logic too. The problem is that Logic does recognize the Tascam but when it comes to recording, I can't get it to work. Apparently it's something to do with the sample rate?
Please help - if it can be avoided, I don't want to have to buy another device. Any advice or answers would be very much appreciated!
    Thank you.

It sounds like you have the same setup as us.
I (oops, wife) has a brand new iMac, a Tascam US-122L and a Yamaha KX8 controller. She started with GarageBand, then bought Logic Express 9 and just yesterday we ordered the upgrade to Logic Studio.
Like any new computer setup of course nothing worked right away.
She plugs her guitar into the Tascam but it didn't work until we changed to Input 2 in Logic (or was it GarageBand, sorry I am getting them confused).
Anyway, my point is that you should not need any more hardware to make it work. We have yet to plug a mike into the Tascam...that will be the fun for the weekend....lol
    Good luck,
    Paul

  • Logic Express 8 won't open

Just bought a new copy of Logic Express 8. Have installed twice, but the app will not open. Crashes after only a couple of seconds of the bouncing icon.
I tried firing up my Yamaha GO46 interface, thinking maybe it wanted to see an input. Got all my audio/MIDI configured, ready to go. Nothing helped.
I have Cubase LE installed and it runs fine. I wanted to improve my DAW, but an app that won't open is no improvement.

Any ideas what the deal is?

It sounds like an issue with the core audio.
When you start logic, hold down the ctrl button and choose no when the option to load the core audio appears. Logic should open.
You need to configure the audio settings in the audio/midi setup utility found in the application\utility folder.
By default, I think the input is set to the inbuilt microphone - you need to change it to your audio hardware which you use (make sure it's connected and turned on). You also need to make sure your audio hardware is turned on and connected to your computer before you open logic in future.
    Hope it helps.

  • Use exterior vst instruments in Logic Express 9

From my former PC I installed Cubase Essential5 onto my new iMac and I purchased Logic Express 9 as well. I am trying to find out wether I can use the HALionOne and Synth Prologue vst instruments in Logic Express and how I go about it. I did install a demo version of Musiclab's Realguitar and after checking the Audio Units Manager, installment I was able to open this under Exterior instruments. Does anybody have suggestions?
    evert

    Hi
Logic only supports Audio Unit plugins, not VST (or any other type). Install the correct type and you should be good to go.

  • Logic, Reason, or Cubase

I have been using Logic Express for two years, mainly the virtual instruments. I am looking to upgrade to something that offers more but don't really know where to get started, and was wondering what the differences, the pros and cons, are to the logic system, propellerhead, and cubase? Thanks for any help!

IMHO, Reason is a different type of application - like Live is a different application. I haven't used Cubase in a while but the last version I used was not on a level with Logic at all.
You didn't mention Digital Performer which still has the best and ironically the most "logical" workflow, interface and GUI of any other DAW application I've worked on. Downside to DP is that it is way processor inefficient compared to Logic for VI's. Great interface, really good upgrades (usually free), but way lousy customer support and the included VIs are pretty lame. MOTU's paid VIs are really great (MX4, MachFive II, Symphonic Instrument, and Ethno area all really good). Price is now a consideration as well since DP plus those VIs would be over $2,000 retail I think.
I've been using logic for about a year now. The interface is still suck city. It gets better over time, but it still needs a lot of improvement. It is like having a car with a quirky transmission or srarter that you learn to shift or start over time. You know it's goofy, but it doesn't bother you after a while. It is hard to believe how bad the interface in L7 sucked. L8 is a huge improvement though. One big annoying thing is that you have to assign keys to certain features if you want them at all. Nice to see Logic finally get on board with the consolidated window circa DP 2005 although as with most things, the DP implementation is better (and slower heh heh). Logic is WAY processor efficient, has fantastic VIs, good effects, nice sample library, the Apple Loop browser - and the interface still blows comparitively.
However be all this as it may, for $499 (or the $199 upgrade or whatever it is), Choosing Logic Studio is a NO BRAINER. While the Logic 8 "upgrade" is pretty yawn underwhelming from a "new features and improvements" standpoint (sticking in a couple of minor features found elsewhere for a while), it is a small step in the right direction. Hopefully there are bigger steps to follow.
Look at the bright side... if you're not familiar with anything BUT Logic, you won't miss anything from the other DAWs. I envy you. You can get great work done with Logic, the VIs and effects are great. For $499, it simply can not be beat. For all its shortcomings, Logic is the only choice.
You should also search the web for comparison discussions.

  • CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH LOGIC EXPRESS 7

I have just installed logic express 7 on my mac but for some reason none of the MIDI sounds are playing back through my speakers after i have made them in the matrix edit window. i know the program is playing the MIDI sounds because it is showing there is a signal in the tarck mixer window yet on on the transport bar it says there is no MIDI output, does anyone.
The same problem is occuring in my copy of cubase aswell which leads me to believe that there may be a problem with the MIDI settings on my mac,
ive tried everything i can think of to get it to work but its no good,
    CAN ANYONE HELP ME
    Much apreciated
    armadacd55

    Tom, some preliminary questions:
Have you gone through the Audio MIDI setup utility (not in Logic, in /Applications/Utilities) and set up your devices?
What are you using for an audio interface, a third-party interface (PCI card, USB or Firewire) or the Mac's built-in audio?
What are you trying to use to generate sound from the MIDI data - a soft-synth, the EXSP24 sample player, a Quicktime instrument, or an external sound module?

  • Control surfaces with Logic Express

    hello all
Im new to MAc , completely new having been PC since the year dot...Having used Cubase since atari days I have a Steinberg Houston Controller surface. Anyone know if it is possible to use it with Logic Express before I spend £150 on the programe please??

    Hi,
nope, the surface wouldn't work natively on a Mac. You can only use it's MIDI features and remap the controls to functions in Logic. As long as the interface sends MIDI, this will work, but there won't be any access to the special features i guess. Guess why? Steinberg wouldn't want to provide a driver for another DAW than Cubase. Sneaky little ones they are...
But you can try to sell it through ebay.

  • Logic Express frustrations, Garageband Joys

Every time I sit down and really try to dive into Logic I get frustrated, close the program, and use Garageband instead. I think I am starting to hate Logic and regret my purchase.... It feels like the most counter-intuitive program I have ever used to record music. I've used Cubase for years to record live acoustic and electric guitars, vocals, bass, sequenced keys and drums, rewired it with Reason, all with no troubles. With Logic I can't even figure out how to get a guitar signal into the *&%! thing. Can anyone recommend a good tutorial website or book? The Logic manual/helpfiles are not easy to figure out at all with no real "getting started" tutorial. I'm very close to selling my copy on eBay!

I switched from Cubase when Logic was first out the door with an OS X version. Then I was invested into it. I agree that Logic Express is far more complicated than it needs to be. Take a look at Final Cut Express. Apple took a very complex feature set and created an interface that made it manageably easy to use in a fairly short period of time.
After using Logic for about two months (and yes, I read the manual, printed portions of the full-blown help files, bought two videos and a good 3rd party manual), I walked away from it.
About a year later, I gave it another try. I started from scratch, followed the tutorials in Martin Sitter's Logic Pro and Logic Express book, and learned it step by step. I am still learning, but now that I've got the basics, I am really glad I have the program. I only wish I had the dough to upgrade to Pro.
One thing I have learned in the process: if you can think of something you want to do with your studio, either hardware or software, Logic probably has a way to do it. It might not be the easiest way, but it is there.

  • Logic Express 6 on Intel iMac

Is anyone still using Logic 6(apple) on an Intel iMac? Just wondering. I found a deal on Logic 6. I'm an old school Cubase user(wintel) and want to make the move over to logic. Logic 6 and the upgrade to 7 are still a better deal for me than Logic 7 on it's own.
    Intel iMac 1.83Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi....... I have Logic Express 6, if your looking to
be swayed into an inexpensive way of using Logic I
can sure give you a sreaming deal.
    6, 7, 7.1, 7.2, it's all small changes that don't
amount to much. If you find something that works
just go with it........ having the latest version
    isn't imperative.
Except....it IS imperative if he wants to use it on an Intel Mac; Logic 6 WON'T run on one.
And BTW, there were BIG changes from Logic 6 to Logic 7 (and even from 7 to 7.1). not the least of which is Plug-In Delay Compensation, which is pretty critical IMHO.

  • Logic Express, Reason 4 and a MacBook Pro.

I'm looking to get a MacBook Pro (15" @ 2.4 Ghz C2D) and have been writing in Reason 4 pretty exclusively on our current project. In the past I was using Cubase SX2, Reason and a PCI Audio card. So, I'm looking to find a Intel Compatible audio application and most likely not going to get the latest version of Cubase SX (or whatever it's called now). Nice application but I'm ready to move to something else.
A couple of questions... Will logic work nicely with the MBPro? Is the 15.4" screen tolerable with Logic Express? I'll still have the Dual 1.8 G5 w/ 4 GB of memory but wan to try and be totally portable. Also, for a simple two channel input how is the quality on the 1/8" jack? Should I look for a nice 2 channel input/output USB audio card?
That is all my questions for now.
    Thanks.
    Bill

I may have mispoke - I need to be able to transfer pictures from my Samsung phone to my Macbook Pro - I have had them talk with the bluetooth but that only worked once. I would like to be able to use a cord and have the Macbook recognize the phone - how do I do that?

  • Problems Using Logic Express with Alesis Multimix 8

    Hi,
Does anybody have any experience of using the Alesis Multimix 8 USB with Logic Express 7.0.1? As far as I can tell the software is set up OK. The problem is that there is an awful amount of noise present on both the input and the output (sounds like inordinatley loud dither). The problem is also present on Garageband and iTunes but not with Cubase LE (bundled in with the Multimix).
I have searched and searched the internet for drivers for the Multimix but with no luck. At the moment I am just using the "core audio" USB codec drivers that are built in as I seem to have no other option.
Does anybody have any suggestions before I go ahead and buy another external audio interface? (got my eye on the new Behringer F-CONTROL AUDIO FCA202)
    Rev. G Rock
PS I am running OS X (10.3.9) on a G4 iBook (1.33 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM) and have done all the updates available for Logic Express 7.0(.1)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

OK I understand it's helpful to others to post solutions should you find them so here goes:
It would seem that the problem is with the built in CODEC used by OS X. You can update using the drivers available at http://www.usb-codec.com
I used the demo version to see if it solved the problem which it did. However you need to buy the software to get rid of the annoying beep every 30 secs on the demo version. well worth it to get my hardware working properly though.

  • Logic Express Trial

I want to try using logic, i am currently a cubase user.
However wehn i try to download the logic express trial version it will not let me.
Has anyone else had this problem?
or can someone suggest how to download the trial
    Cheers Dave

u would think if everyone has the same problem every day and askes the same questions Apple would address that in the setup notes.
Couldn't agree more. A page or two, with a simple table, would render many posts here unnecessary from people those getting started with Logic.
"If you want to do this then do that" type of table. Perhaps you could send feedback:

  • How can I route my audio interface inputs to Logic Express inputs?

    Hello,
Logic Express can 12 inputs to record audio on.... fair enough.
My MOTU Traveler, together with ADAT connected Mackie Onyx 800F have 16 inputs...
How can I use the first 4 inputs (XLR) together with the last 8 input (ADAT)
Logic only seems to count from 1 to 12!
(After reading the manual, It seemed to be solved by making new Audio Input Objects in the Environment, but unfortunately these objects where removed from Logic Express)
    Does anybody have the solution?
    Thanks a lot.
    Greetings,
    Mark

    Hi Michael, thanks a lot!
Unfortunately it didn't solve my problem yet. I tried
the audio/midi utility and found that the inputs
can't be turned off. Is there not a environment patch
possible, that I can load that puts the inputs in the
    right order? I hope so!
    Greetz,
    Mark
The Environment doesn't route audio; it routes MIDI. There are audio objects IN the Environment, but you can't shuttle audio around like that.
You have to remember that LE is an entry-level piece of software. You might think Garageband is entry level, and I think it should be, but in reality, LE is VERY crippled. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ragging on Logic as a program; I think Logic is great. But Apple has made some poor choices with respect to the features of LP that get crippled in LE.
Sorry to digress from your original topic, but I think this is a bigger issue. The difference in price between LP and LE is enormous. That difference should be due to the fact that LP has plugs and effects (and other fairly esoteric features, like surround mixing, that most people don't need), and that justifies the price difference. Remember, when Emagic sold Logic (pre-Logic Pro 6), those effects and instruments cost a LOT more than the difference between LP and LE. LP is really a steal for what you get. LE is a poor substitute.
Seriously, LE is a lot less than just a lite version of LP; it's crippled by things like the 12 input/output thing (what is the point?), the useless Auxes, and numerous other little things that keep it from really competing with other 'lite' sequencers like Cubase SL or Audiodesk.
Anyway, I think the answer to your question is, if you need to record more than 12 simultaneous tracks, or you need flexibility in accessing your hardware's inputs and outputs, you need a better program.
Fortunately, the upgrade cost to LP isn't that much, nor is the crossgrade to Digital Performer...

  • Logic Express Trial version

I am looking for the *Logic Express Trial version* since certain time with no luck.
Does anybody know how we can have a demo version?
I was using Cubase SX before and now I would like to switch to Logic Express, but no where on line could not find any demo version.
Most of the software in the market have a Trial version but not for LE 7 or LE8.Shame...
    Any info would be appreciated.

I believe back in 2005 there was a free trial version of Logic Express 7, but I don't see anything available at the moment for either 7 or 8. So, yes, that means you buy before you try, unfortunately.
Having said that I must add that I picked up Logic Express 8 a few weeks ago and I love it. I've never used Logic before so the price cut and all the added plugs and instruments made this deal too good for me to pass up.

  • Logic Express 7 Update/Upgrade Question

    Hello,
I posted this once before but I'll try again...
I have Logic Express version 7.0.1 and never did get the "paid" upgrade to Logic Express version 7.1 (or was it version 7.2?). I'm wondering what the latest version of Logic Express 7 is and how I would go about getting the update/upgrade to 7.1 (or 7.2)?
I use GarageBand most of the time and don't use Logic Express a lot so I don't really want to fork out the cash to move to version 8 but it would be nice to see it updated somehow. Logic Express 7.0.1 seems to work fine on 10.5.6 for me, by the way.
I just can't seem to find any info on Apple's website about the version 7.1 (or 7.2) update/upgrade.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Thanks so much,
    Gerard

    It was 7.2.3 (961.9). I still use it along side 8.0.2 (1502.22)…
Because the files in both LE7 & LE8 get huge when they are edited, but unlike in LE7, there is no way to bring the file back to it's proper size. A 350 KB song in LE8 can get to be many MBs, so I'm forced to build the song in LE7 where I can save the final version twice, which brings the file back to it's proper size. I can then open it in LE8 and edit only the few parameters that I've learned don't increase the file's size. The amount of extra work this made transferring 700+ files from Cubase is beyond belief. I needed to get software to preserve LE8 file creation dates for the many files I had to make small changes to in LE7 and import a 'new' file into LE8. And after every 5 times I open LE7, I'm asked to register the application. I had to click that box off the screen over 2500 times.
