Logical column - Fact measure using Dimension value

Hello all, I have a Fact table that has a metric (Value) where I have set the Aggregation rule to Sum. Now I'd like to create a metric based on the value of a Product Dimension that joins to this Fact table. So I create logical column that has the syntax - Case When Product_Desc = 'A' then Value else 0 End.
The issue is in Answers when I bring this new metric in it doesn't bring in the correct value, are there steps I am missing with creating this metric?
My assumption is if I just bring that new metric in by itself it would return one record - A sum of the Value where the Product = 'A'.
Thank you

Hi BRizzle,
In your scenario, you creatre a calculated measure using the employee dimension, and then this measure show "#VALUE" on the pivot table, right? It seems that it's a limitation of using calculated measures in SQL Server Analysis. Calculated measures cannot
be secured using Dimension Security in a straight forward manner, in fact they won't be listed at all in the Dimension tab of the role where we define the Dimension security. When such measures are browsed in client tools like Excel, the value that would be
displayed is an error value like #VALUE. For the detail information about it, please see:
Limitations / Disadvantages of using Calculated Measures / Calculated Members in SSAS

  • Execution of a planning function with the used dimension values in a crosstab

    Hello,
    would like to execute planning functions within Design Studio but I don't really know how I combine this execution with the used dimension values in a crosstab for the .
    Here the requirement:
    3 Planning functions which should use the same filter (all values of all dimensions in the crosstab) and which should run one after another:
    // open data slice
    PF_1.execute();
    // generate combinitions
    PF_2.execute();
    // close data slice
    PF_3.execute();
    Many thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Tobias

    Hi Arun,
    in general it is not possible to nest planning functions. The inner function would update the data in the plan buffer without the outer function knowing about it. Also the inner function might be on a different aggregation level which would make things very tricky.
    Alternatively you can include ABAP logic into a FOX formula:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/47/94eb78b6394befe10000000a42189d/frameset.htm
    Or just create the complete logic in one ABAP planning function type.

  • Using dimension values in calculations of cubes

    hi ,
    I am trying to build a calculated measure using a dimension values like for example
    if a dimension is portfolio
    having values L,X and C values
    and the calculated metrics is like to be calculated only for L and for others it should show 0.
    I created something like this
    sum({[Portfolio Cd].[Portfolio Cd].&[L]},[Measures].[Annual Intr Amt Pl L])
    the problem is that when this metric is drawn to check the values against this dimension it show same values for all the portfolios
    where as it should show 0 for  X and C .
    Can anybody suggest a solution to this .?
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
      Try using a CASE statement in your Calculated measure as shown in below sample
    WITH MEMBER MEasures.SalesAmount
    as
    CASE
    WHEN [Product].[Category].CURRENTMEMBER.MEMBER_CAPTION = "Accessories" THEN SUM([Measures].[Internet Sales Amount])
    ELSE 0
    END
    SELECT [Product].[Category].[Category] ON 1
    ,MEasures.SalesAmount ON 0
    FROM [Adventure Works]

  • Query to Find Table and Column Name by using a value

    Dear Legends,
    I hope and surfed in our forums and google to find the Table Name and Column Name by having a value(Number/String). And my where clauses are
    where owner NOT IN ('SYS','SYSTEM') and
          data_type IN ('CHAR','VARCHAR2','NUMBER')
    May I have your help for building the query. and my query as follows
    select a.owner, c.column_name, c.data_type, c.owner, c.table_name
    from dba_objects a, all_tab_cols c
    where a.owner NOT IN ('SYS','SYSTEM') and
    where c.owner NOT IN ('SYS','SYSTEM') and
    where c.data_type IN ('CHAR','VARCHAR2')
    order by a.owner
    Thanks,
    Karthik

    You can use
    select * from user_tab_columns a, user_tables b
    where a.table_name = b.table_name
    and  a.data_type in ('NUMBER', 'VARCHAR2', 'NCHAR', 'CHAR');
    Or if you want to user DBA_* tables, you can use.
    select * from dba_tab_columns a, dba_tables b
    where a.table_name = b.table_name
    and a.owner = b.owner
    and  a.data_type in ('NUMBER', 'VARCHAR2', 'NCHAR', 'CHAR')
    and b.owner not in ('SYS', 'SYSTEM');
    And now when I look a bit more closely, you don't need DBA_TABLES there. dba_tab_columns alone is sufficient. And requirement is still not clear yet. Why you need a group by there? If I get it right, you can use this.
    select * from dba_tab_columns a
    where a.data_type in ('NUMBER', 'VARCHAR2', 'NCHAR', 'CHAR')
    and a.owner not in ('SYS', 'SYSTEM');
    Whether you use group by or not, the query will give you the same output.

  • How can I make an Equation apply to an entire column, but only use the values in the specific rows?

    I am working on a research project using Numbers 09 and have columns for values that require me to use formulas using values in other columns. Becuase I am lazy and have 180 rows of data, I would like to find a way to have a formula apply to an entire column so that I don't have to go row by row inputting the formula.
    Essentially, I want to be able to have N(X)=F(X)+G(X). Where X is the row number. Is this possible?
    The real formula I want to have is (4*(F(X))^2)/G(X)
    Thanks!

    Place this formula in your chosen column in the first row containing data in columns F and G.
    =(4*F^2)/G
    Press enter to confirm the entry. The result will appear in the cell.
    Click (once) on the cell containing the formula.
    Shift Click on the cell in the same column on the last row containing data in F and G to select all cells between. .
    Go Insert > Fill > Fill down.
    Done.

  • Derived logical column using Row values in OBIEE11g

    Hi Experts
    I have a requirement whereby I need to create say 100 new logical column in obiee using the row values of one dimension.
    For eg. say I have dimension values like A and B in one of the table ,  I need to create logical columns like C=A+B and D = A/B and E = AxB as such when the user drags this to the analysis the calculation should happen automatically.
    The problem is they are in the rows and not the coulmn , so I can't do plain calculation like sales per Unit = Sales/Units - as Sales and Units are two differnet measure column.
    How to achieve this in RPD.
    Regds

    Hi
    Pls. find below the examples :
    You have a dimesion called KPI which has soem KPIs.
    KPI           Measure Values
    KPI1          10
    KPI2          20
    KPI3          50
    etc
    Now I need to calulate a driven KPI i.e KPI10 which is KPI10 = KPI2/KPI3 , and I need to do that in RPD.
    I know I can do it in Front end analaytics by using Pivot or Selection steps . But I want to do it in RPD.

  • OBIEE Error in Logical column

    Hi,
    I want to use dynamic variable and filter the dates. I am creating new logical column in BMM using the below case statement. I am getting the error.Please suggest me for this issue.
    CASE statement:
    CASE WHEN VALUEOF(CURRENT_MONTH_FNC_STG) = '08 2010' THEN
    "FNC_STG"."A_FNC_INVOICES_T"."INVOICE_CREATION_DATE" BETWEEN ('08/01/2010 12:00:00 AM') AND ('08/05/2010 12:00:00 AM')
    END
    --Here CURRENT_MONTH_FNC_STG is dynamic variable....
    Error:
    [nQSError: 27002] Near <BETWEEN>: Syntax error [nQSError: 26012] .
    Thank U

    Hi...
    if avg sales should be calculated to current month always.. then why don't you apply external filter ..
    i hope you are having time dimension columns like: year and month which is holding values like 2010, 2009.. etc, and 1,2,3,4.. etc..
    If then,
    apply this filter..
    Year = Current_Date
    and
    MonthNumber = Month(Current_Date)
    you can't include those 2 r.h.s values directly..
    click on filter option of year column then > Advance > convert this filter to SQL.

  • Passing Presentation variblae to the logical column in the rpd

    Hi,
    Can some one please tell me how to pass presentation variable to RPD logical column
    i am capturing a date from prompt and defining a status column based on the date user selects in the prompt,
    can some please tell me how to achieve this..
    Thanks in advance

    You can pass request variable to RPD.
    Create a session variable called PRESENTATION_VARIABLE. Write some SQL in initialization block like select 'something' from dual.
    Now you can use this session variable in logical column as VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.PRESENTATION_VARIABLE).
    Now go to dashboard prompt , edit the column using which you wanted to set presentation variable. Select Request Variable in Set a variable dropdown.
    Type the name of the Request variable as PRESENTATION_VARIABLE.
    Now in your dashboard report you can use the logical column which is using this request variable.
    Let me know whether it worked or not.
    Thanks

  • Constructing Calculated Measures in MDX for different measures using same columns in a fact table

    Hello,
    i have a fact table with 2 columns corresponding to dimensions Dim1, Dim2. In the same table i have 4 other columns Value_Type(int), INT_VALUE(int), FLOAT_VALUE(float), TEXT_VALUE(string). There are a number of measures which are identified by Value_Type and
    depending on their nature could be written in one of the 3 columns (INT_VALUE(int), FLOAT_VALUE(float), TEXT_VALUE(string)) Let's say Measure1 with Measure_Type=1 is age, 2 is account balance and 3 is Name for clarity. There could be other measure types that
    use these 3 same columns for data. So the sample fact table looks like this
    Dim1 Dim2 Measure_Type INT_VALUE FLOAT_VALUE TEXT_VALUE
    10 10 1 25
    10 10 2 2000,34
    10 10 3 John
    10 20 1 28
    10 20 2 3490,23
    10 20 3 Frank
    My task is to write an MDX query for each Dim1, Dim2 combination which returns all 3 measures in the same row. The idea is to construct a calculated member for each Measure that returns value from the right field. For example for Measure1 we take INT_VALUE
    with measure_type=1. The problem is i don't know how to construct MDX query for these calculated members. Can you please help me?
    So my final goal is to write an MDX query that returns all measures in one row for each set of Dim1, Dim2
    SELECT [Measure1], [Measure2], [Measure3] ON COLUMNS,
    NON EMPTY [Dim1].[Dim1].[Dim1].Members*[Dim2].[Dim2].[Dim2].Members ON ROWS
    FROM [Cube]
    Dim1 Dim2 Measure1 Measure2 Measure3
    10 10 25 2000,34 John
    10 20 28 3490,23 Frank

    Hi Kosmipt,
    I would combine the "INT_VALUE", "FLOAT_VALUE" and "TEXT_VALUE" columns into one with STRING data type for the fact table. And there should be one dimension to store the Measure_Type informations. Then in cube, you can write MDX scope for every one of
    "Measure_Type" dimension members. For example,
    scope(
                [Measures].[M]
        [DimMType].[MType].&[1]= CINT([Measures].[M]);
    end scope;
    Once the cube is built by the above way, you can write MDX like something like the following to achieve your purpose.
    WITH member [Measures].[Measure1] AS ([DimMType].[MType].&[1],[Measures].[M])
             member [Measures].[Measure2] AS ([DimMType].[MType].&[2],[Measures].[M])
             member [Measures].[Measure3] AS ([DimMType].[MType].&[3],[Measures].[M])
    thanks,
    Jerry

  • Few dimension values used in FACT tables.

    Hello all,
    We are trying to know if somebody faced this issue earlier. We have dimension tables containing 5 million records, but the fact table uses hardly 30k of these dimension values. The fact table contains 350 million records, so is there any way to improve the performance of the query in such a scenario, where hardly 20% of dimension values are actually used by the FACT tables.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Different measures use same source column but gives different values in SSAS project

    I've inherited a SSAS project. I'm currentlig gaining knowledge, but do not understand this: There are 4 measures that get data from same source table and column. Example measures:
    [Started]
    [Processing]
    [Processed]
    [Finished]
    All of them gets data from a table (view), and a column "Event_count" with just value 0 in each row. Usage of the measure is "Count of non-empty values".
    Correctly all of these measures gives different values, but I don't understand how since they all go against the same source column. I thougt maybe they were defined in Calculated measures, but nothing there. Where or what else could be affecting this behavior?
    Bonus information (problem): One of the measures is returning blank/empty, which is why started with this research at all.
    Help anyone?
    regards .r

    Hi ,
    I would ask if all the measures are under the same measure group ? It is important to know, since in the dimension usage we are creating relationships between dimensions and measure
    groups .
    Did you try the delete all the calculation's code and leave only the " CALCULATE ; " part ? Do the values change after deploying the slim script ?
    Are all properties the same ? defaults & caching ?

  • Display values for logical columns with several physical sources

    Hi all,
    I'm enocuntering some strange behaviour with the values displayed for a column (when we want to add it a as a filter, and in the dialogue box select 'Show All' values).
    Basically the logical column is mapped against several physical columns as the base fact table is aggregated to different levels. Additionally, one column in the fact tables has an attribute value, and these vary between the aggregated and non-aggregated table. This is not a problem.
    In the production environment, when we display the all values in the filters prompt for this column we are seeing the values being taken from one fact table. Naturally this means that not all the values possible for this column are being shown (i.e. values from the aggregated fact tables are missing). Now in one of our test environment where those fact tabels have additional data loaded, the values are being taken from one of the other fact tables. Unfortunately it is not necessarily the fact table with less data.
    My questions are:
    a) What dictates which fact table the server will use when the query in Answers doesnt use any dimensions (i.e. we are selecting just this attribute and selecting all the possible values by which it can be filtered)?
    b) Is there a way of obtaining all the values from the differente physical columns? I.e. that the display values shows the values of that logical column across all the physical fact tables? Maybe we would need to model that attribute as a logical dimension just for that attribute? Im not really sure this would work, as at the physical level the join between the dimension and fact would still have to go to only one particular fact table.
    Any info or help is much appreciated.

    Hi,
    Aggregate tables exist at physical level and are created by ETL procedures. Although i am aware that the dimension come into play when the application needs to decide which source aggregate table to use, it is not an issue here as in our query we are not involving dimensions. We are selecting just this one columen, and then the filter option on this column, then in the dialogue box we select 'All Choices', only the values from one of the source tables is being shown.
    This is not a probelm within reports, i think it is a product limitation in that in that option to list all values a user can filter by, it is not possible to display all the values from the different fact tables to which that column is mapped.
    Has anyone else encountered this behaviour?

I removed content tables dim level totals for unconformed dimensions in logical fact LTS and set level for measures at total level for unconformed dimensions. it is still in progress and need to test.

  • Count Measure by Minimum values in Dimension only

    Hi, I am drawing a huge blank here -
    I have a Count measure on my fact table, and need to count the rows only if a code in the dimension table is the minimum code for the Fact
    For my fact, I need to count from the following dims:
    Dim A (count all from this dim - which would be a distinct?)
    Dim B (count only the minimum code from this dim)
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi oroborus , you are basically trying to have two new measures in your Fact, based on some conditions.
    Ex: You have a measure Total_Orders in your Fact and based on some conditions you want two new measures say Total_US_Orders and Total_OnLine_Orders.
    Lets assume you have two dimensions Country_Dim and Store_Dim. which gives you location and Store of an order.
    In your business model, duplicate the Total_Orders measure and name it as Total_US_Orders. Check the Use existing logical columns as the source box and go into the Expression Builder.
    Here you define the formula for this new column. Which will be something like
    FILTER(Fact.Total_Orders USING Country.Country_Code='US').
    Similarly, create the Total_OnLine_Orders by duplicating the Total_Orders measure and write a formula something like
    FILTER(Fact.Total_ORDERS USING Store.Store_Type = 'Online')
    I hope this will give you a brief idea of how to create calculated columns in business layer.
    Good Luck
    Sai
