Login window won't display list of users

I had 2 users, my main admin account and the default "guest".
And it bugged me that each time I restarted the Macbook Air, unlike with my previous Macbooks or with my iMac, I didn't see a list of users to choose (and then enter password) but just a "name" and "password" fields.
This appeared all of a sudden after an OS X update a few months ago. At first I thought it was a new thing... sorry I really can't remember WHICH update. But I know it wasn't like that when I bought the Macbook Air last January, and it appeared suddenly after a restart.
At the time I panicked since I didn't remember right away what the heck my user name was. It's not like I use it regularly! Thankfully I remembered. And forgot all about it until the next reboot.
And I finally decided to look into it, and realized it's a simple setting I should be able to change.
But I can't!
My settings were already set to "display a list of users" and NOT to "name and password".
To make sure, I created a new "test" user (which I should've done as soon as I got the MBA anyways).
I also tried selecting "name and password" option... hoping there was a mixup somewhere and the options were "cross-wired" somehow (ok, I didn't really believe it would work).
And putting the option back to "users list".
logging off inbetween each change.
I shut the MBA off completely too.
But nothing works.
I still only get the name and password fields.
My settings say one thing, reality shows another.
It's a minor thing. But it bugs me big time.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If nothing appears in the TextEdit window, post the contents of the Terminal window.

    Hi,
Is there a way (like a notification or API) that the daemon can figure out when the login window is being displayed after the user logs out?
    Thanks!

  • Some windows won't display?

For some reason, some of my windows in dreamweaver will not display correctly, or much at all. For instance, when you first open dreamweaver and select "new dreamweaver site" all I get is a window that displays a few text fields and then whatever is behind that window (almost like the entire window is transparent, except when I move the window, it doesn't change to match what is behind it) My system exceeds the dreamweaver minimum requirements.
    I operate on windows xp
I am running the trial version.

I have, Thank you. I kinda sorta fixed the problem, I discovered that when I move the window off of the screen, it appears correctly, annoying but I dont know what else to do.
    Thanks alot for replying

  • Login window not displaying list of users

Hello, i work in a networked office environment, where we regularly sync our networked users to mobile accounts, using homesync.
On most of our computers, the login window displays the admin account, guest account, other (for network login) and any users synced. However on some computers, it just displays the username/password dialogue. I've checked the login preferences - and "display login window as: list of users" is selected. Also this information is grayed out as though it can't be changed. Is there a rogue system preference file that's causing this to not work correctly? If so where is it, can i delete it, or modify it to fix this situation? thanks!

I tried the commands you've listed. Upon checking the com.apple.loginwindow.plist files, I noticed that the changes ARE being made to the file, but loginwindow.app is flat-out ignoring the settings. As for the stuff I tried earlier:
    Boot into Single-User Mode
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Library/Preferences
    rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    rm com.apple.windowserver.plist
    cd /Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    cd /System/Library
    rm Extensions.kextcache
    cd /System/Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    reboot
...and after this had no effect, I deleted the loginwindow plists listed above several times from the Finder to force loginwindow.app to regenerate them.
It seems like my problem has evolved slightly since my first post. At first, changes made in the Accounts preference pane would have no effect on the contents of /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist. Now, the changes ARE made in the file, but loginwindow.app does not heed them. Any ideas?

  • Login Window stuck displaying "List of users"

The Login Window app on my PowerBook (OS 10.4.6) suddenly stopped taking changes to preferences. Things like auto-login, displaying the Reboot/Sleep/Shutdown buttons, showing the list of users vs. the user/password prompt, etc. have been changed in the Preference Pane, but upon logout or reboot the changes have no effect. This is really a problem, as I want the login window to display the user/password prompt rather than the default list of users for privacy. I've followed the instructions posted elsewhere for fixing the auto-login problem (boot into single-user mode and delete the appropriate plists/caches), and it had no effect. Any help anyone could render would be appreciated.

  • Login Window - Display List of Users

I have a SLS running in home environment. I only have a few accounts, and on the server, I want the list of users, not the "user/pass" prompt.
I've searched on this and found:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWFULLNAME 1 (turn on name list)
and did this, and the value appears as one in my plist, but it's still not working.
    Any suggestions?

    Hey Mr Hoffman,
How you doing? You are by far one on the highly respected guys on the forums. I say your post and thought "wow, he figured it out." But, alas, we are both stymied. This is a good one. Been messing with this for a while and nothing seems to work on server. Crazy thing is that /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow and /System/Library/PreferencePanels/Accounts are exactly the same size and version on client as they are on server. And now with compiled nibs, I can no longer look at the interface files. So the setting is being modified somewhere else. Still have not found exactly were but clearly the defaults command that works on client is not read on server and the pref panel disables the option to toggle.
Again, MrH, thanks for all the answers and the continued contribution to the forums.

  • Clicking on my user on login window occasionally causes display errors. Graphics chip dying?

Hi. Occasionally (but happening more and more often), when I boot my computer and it goes to the login window, when I click on my username, suddenly the screen corrupts a bit around the username and while I can move my mouse, nothing is clickable anymore. The corrupt pattern always differs, and the only way to fix it for me is to force turn off the computer. When I reboot it, it works normally, and I can type my password to login. However today, I received the problem, and when I rebooted it, the problem happened again. I didn't want to shut it down this time to look for another solution so I just shut the lid, put the computer to sleep, and reopened it to see if the problem was fixed, but to no avail, the glitches (mostly random patches of black and white dispersed with small sprinkled pixels of varying colors) this time filled the entire screen.
I think it may relate to the GPU, and in the case of the GPU, I can recall an event where I was using Final Cut to export something while I was also exporting something in Premiere, and suddenly the computer just stopped moving, and closing the lid didn't stop the harddisk or stop the fans (probably overtaxed with heat). After that, I've been noticing this happening.
My temporary solution with this issue is to change the graphics card I am using.
My MacBook Pro has the "better battery life" and "better performance" option, in which the 9400M is for "better" and the 9600M GT (or whatever) is for "performance", and requires me to log out and sign back in for any changes. For a while now, I have been using the "better performance" option since I started using final cut more often. Since it requires me to log out and sign back in in order to change, I feel that the 9600M GT which I might have possibly damaged could have something to do with it, since it seems that when I click on my username, the internal preference files change the graphics preference to "better performance", and that change may cause the glitches.
Did I toast my 9600? How should I resolve this issue? I feel if I turn this computer on again it will never go back to it's normal mode.
edit: read other topics, in case anyone brings up a heat theory: No I do not see any association with heat. I have had the glitch occur when I turn the computer on in the cold or when I turn it on a couple minutes after I turn it off, in which the board is still warm

You have the MacBook pro 5,1 2008?
Have you installed this firmware update, which brings you up to MBP51.007E.B06 (EFI 2.8)
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.8
    Download
This update is recommended for MacBook Pro (15-inch, late 2008) models. The update resolves a graphics issue that may cause the internal display to flicker.

  • Keyboard doesn't respond at login window... works in Single User mode

I have a G4 xServe (server 10.3) that won't accept keyboard input at login window, but the same keyboard, usb port, works fine when I'm booted into Single User Mode.
Booting into Single User mode, something interesting gets posted during boot:
    "AppleCPUThermo got unsupported command"
    Any thoughts?

Did you find a resolution to this issue? After I installed the latest security update to OSX Server 10.4.8 I am now experiencing the same problem. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • New Safari Window won't display

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard at my work computer (they don't allow Lion yet). I ran the updates which upgraded Safari to 5.1. However, now I can't open a new window. It shows in the window menu that they are open, but they won't display, and I can't get them to. If I hit Command-L it will highlight the url field, but won't allow me to type anything. I've tried going back to Safari 5.0, uninstalled all extensions, deleted cache, reset everything etc. I now don't have any of my work-specific bookmarks and an unusable browser. I've deleted preference files, cache files, etc. It starts like normal, but if I close the window, or open a new window, it is locked up. Is there any way to fix this?

    Anti virus software installed?
Does the same thing happen in another user account?
    How about third party plugins?

  • Preferences window won't display along with other windows.

I am trying to edit my preferences. It only displays a little hint of a window with an X to close it. The same thing for reporting a bug. Basically I have not been able to get one popup application window to display.
I am on Vista Ultimate x64 with dual monitors running in 2650x1600 resolution.
Basically I can't even report the problem as a bug since that feature won't display the window either. Hopefully Apple is monitoring this board.

The same thing is happening to me in XP. I couldn't even log on to this site as a window (probably asking to save my password) is popping up but all it shows is a small title bar with an X. No preferences, can't report bugs or even customize the toolbar.

  • Screensharing login window won't quit

I have had this problem over a year now. We have 3 Macs in the house - two iMacs and my MacBook Pro. Both the iMacs have screensharing enabled in their System Preferences. On my MBP, in the Finder window sidebar I select one of the other mac to view. I get the usual screensharing login window, I enter the info. and hit connect and it never connects. The window will never quit neither can I dismiss the window even by quitting screen sharing app. I have not been able to find the exact process that is responsible for this window in the Activity Monitor so I could atleast terminate the process there. The only way I could then get out of the mess is to log out and then log in. Here's a little caveat. If when the login window is sitting there stubbornly trying to log in and I have quit the Screensharing app, I go back to the Finder window, select the same Mac and hit Share Screen button, it will immediately connect. But the log in window will still sit there and there is no way I can dismiss it other than to log out and log in. - It's really annoying I have not been able to figure out as to why this happens. Anyone know about this? It's been about 15 minutes now, and the window is still there. It doesn't time out either! Well, I got to go log out now (after I post this post)

Yes, I have had this issue and it is quite annoying.  If you go to Activity Monitor and Force Quit 'NetAuthAgent,' it will kill the login box (make sure you have 'All Processes' listed in Activity Monitor).  How to keep it from happening, I have no idea, but this at least gets the login box to go away.

  • New iTunes, Login Window won't open

After installing iTunes 7.02 last night, I tried opening it. Unfortunetly it slowed the computer down a lot and I forced quit it. Later when I turned on my computer to use again, it acted very slowly, taking 45 minutes just to get to where the login window should be. But the loading bar stops just at the very end, and I am deprived of logging on. I tried numerous solutions, including trying to reinstall OS X, It wouldn't let me as there was a newer version, repairing the disk permisions with system profiler, it froze halfway through, repairing the disk with system profiler, it was unbale to repair 1 disk, go into single user mode to fix some plists, try safe booting, it wouldn't work either, I tried to use the Techtool Deluxe program that comes with Apple Care, it wasn't able to boot from that. Please help!

I just got Tech Tool to turn on, guess it was taking a really long time.

  • Lion Server won't display AD imported users

I have a Lion Server running 10.7.5 on a Mid 2011 Mac Mini Server, the server is bound to our Windows 2008 domain and the server is used to manage iOS device via Profile Manager as well as a suite of iMacs via Open Directory and Work Group Manager.
As of last week everything with the server was working perfectly (well it was after we opened up the necessary ports) I was able to enrol and manage devices and import AD users in to the relevant Profile Manager groups and assign the group a iOS Configuration Profile.
As of yesteraday all previously imported users don't show up within the Server App, I can import new users and add them to groups but previous users don't show up in the Users list.
If I check group membership the previous users are there within the Server App if I hover over the users I get their UserID and Node information from AD. If I look in Work Group Manager and check group members the membrs show up as Not Found.
As a result of this I am unable to enrol any new devices with Profile Manager or manage the current devices trying to lock devices fails and so does trying to enrol new devices.
Nothing has been changed on the server or our firewall, the server is still bound to AD and both LDAP and Open Directory are working fine. I can test the AD bind with dscl /Search –read /Users/username and get valid output.
Does anyone have any advice or pointers for me so that I can trouble shoot this issue please?

  • Bootcamp Windows won't display without power cable attached

Hey guys, I have a strange problem and I don't know when it first arose.
I have a MacBook Pro which I use a VGA adapter to have 2 monitors running (my laptop screen and the extra monitor). This runs fine in OSX.
When I try to use the same set up in Windows I get weird results. It works fine while I have the power cable plugged in. When I remove the power cable only the secondary monitor shows and the laptop's monitor powers down. If I don't have my VGA cable plugged in and try to run Windows with just my laptop screen, I can only get the screen to display while the power cable is in. As soon as it remove the power cable, my laptop's monitor powers off. It comes back on when I reattach the power cable. When I have the power cable in and the VGA cable in, both monitors display fine
Does anyone have any idea what this is about? I reckon its something to do with starting to use a 2nd monitor on OSX, but I have no idea where to start.
    Thanks in advance!

Since I heard other people had DVI
connections working, I tried that, and it worked.
Then, I plugged an analog monitor back into it, and
that worked too! Seems like it just needed a kick
    (weird).
I too have tried all manner of combinations and restarts to get Windows XP output to SVGA data projector. I get picture during windows start up and then it disappears - never to return once XP has loaded.
What order do you use to link up all the bits? is there a way to toggle external monitor in XP via boot camp on a Macbook Pro?
