Long delay launching application

I have a problem with an application dispensed by webstart. Some users get long delays launching the application. Webstart hangs at the point of "checking for updates" and takes up to 20 mins to get past this point. The problem is not usually reliable. The few times I've got my hands on a computer which displays these symptoms it mysteriously decides to start working properly. Has anybody experienced anything similar or have any idea what might be happening?
I noticed a bug with similar symptoms in the FAQ but I am not setting heap size so it's not that.
The only common feature I've identified is that it doesn't appear to happen to people who don't have to authenticate on the web server.
These are the details:
There are about 100 people launching an application through webstart on various operating systems and with various network configurations - ie some are loading over a vpn and some access from outside the network.
All users are accessing the same web server and all users go through a fairly restrictive firewall (though obviously open on port 80).
There is a possibility that some of the files (in particular the jnlp file) get cached by servers routing the data. This has sometimes caused problems before.
The server (running apache) requires authentication for all users not on the local network.
The application is quite large and it takes about 30 mins to download via a 56k modem.
There are regular updates to one of the jar files.

sorry to revive an old thread... perhaps this may be of some help to you

  • Unexplained Delay Launching Applications (two related questions)

I apologize at the outset for the length of this message.  I've added the information accumulated after trying several Window XP forums.
    1) I'm getting a 30-60s delay launching almost any program (from Command Prompt, Notepad, through any Office 2007 application), but only the FIRST time that particular program is launched during a given "session."  (Here "session" seems to mean any extended period of inactivity, not generally a reboot or logoff/logon.)  The Windows Task Manager shows CPU usage is 99% by System Idle Process during this delay (but I can't do much else while I wait), so I have no idea what's causing the holdup.  After the machine gets "warmed up," however, there are no delays of any sort.  Any suggestions to track down the problem?
Possibly relevant details:  Lenovo T61 (Core2 Duo), vintage June 2008, running Windows XP Professional SP2 -- factory-supplied downgrade option from Vista,  (This is a problem that I noticed shortly after the downgrade, not a "new" problem appearing on an older installation.)  All other current Windows security updates (plus Windows Search 4.0 but minus SP3, which Lenovo warns against, and minus IE 8, which is too new for my taste) have been applied.  A bunch (but far less than half) of the Lenovo preloaded software has been uninstalled.  The only security software is ZoneAlarm Security Suite 8.0.298.035.  (Yes, I did a clean uninstall of Norton before anything else.  I use ZASS "Internet Lock" a lot, and one of the many manifestations of this problem is a long-delayed response to right-clicking on the locked ZASS icon in the system tray.  Nevertheless, I did try a clean uninstall/re-install of ZASS with only a temporary improvement.  Further, the problem does not arise every time I use Internet Lock.)  Various other "tweaks" that don't seem immediately relevant have been applied, of course.
I have another very similar installation of XP (SP3 this time), and ZASS on an older Dell laptop -- all of the same tweaks have been applied, as near as I can tell (but no Lenovo add-ons, of course) -- which shows no such problem.  This is why I suspect some interaction with Lenovo software (in addition to the fact that there is so much of it).
The precise phenomenology of the problem is difficult to ascertain, but it seems to occur primarily after Power Options has turned the screen off for an extended period of time.  (It's not allowed to go to sleep or hibernate automatically while plugged in.)  In any case, it doesn't only happen after a reboot.  What continues to puzzle me most is that there's no indication in Task Manager of anything going on at all.
An apparently reasonable suggestion was made that I was seeing unusually long virus scans on first launch of programs, but this doesn't seem to explain the delays:  They don't usually happen immediately after a reboot, and there's no CPU hog showing up in Task Manager when this happens.
    2) I would be most grateful for any information about which of the ThinkVantage applications is really essential for this machine (or is potentially problematic), since I would really like to get rid of more of them, thus (I hope) resolving my problem.  For example, I assume I would want to keep "Active Protection System," but I use an image-backup system so I don't really need "Rescue and Recovery."  Nor do I need the pre-installed multi-media suite -- apparently by Sonic, which also installs a very annoying "InstallShield" update manager that I cannot figure out how to disable -- especially since I prefer CDBurnerXP and Windows Media Player.  It seems that a lot of this Lenovo stuff is loaded on startup, thus consuming resources and a potential source of my problem.  Before I embark on a whole-sale un-installation of ThinkVantage software, however, I'd like to know more about what's relevant and how to restore individual packages if I find I need them.
To take one example, the Lenovo overlay of Windows Power Manager appears to have significant additional features (e.g., CPU speed control and smart battery-charging modes), but I can't tell whether they really do anything with the given hardware or whether their benefits might be worth having the software running constantly.
Below is a list of stuff that's set to run on startup -- most of it left over from the original Lenovo Thinkpad setup -- that I didn't dare uninstall without more knowledge.  (I checked all the potential startup sources that I know of, and the rest are empty, including win.ini/load=.  Windows Search says it's finished indexing.)  I could also send a table of running services (long!) if anyone really wants to see it...

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    jcw2, nothing to worry about
Most of these have are listed in the processes beacuse they are in the system startup(you mentioned it yourself). You explained in your post that you were willing to replace sonic record now.removing these from the startup donnot mean that they are "un-installed" from the system. It will only help you in increasing your boot time to your desktop.I only recommended removing these from the startup items only!
Removing any thinkvantage utility program is at your own discretion,it depends on what you want to use and what you dont.If you have observed my post correctly i have not mentioned anywhere about removing thinkvantage utilities from startup, I am not aware of thinkvantage utilites on a thinkpad.
now let me explain why i suggested you to remove them only from  startup
     1.adobe synchronizer
The Adobe Synchronizer is a networking agent that is used to build disconnection tolerant applications. The Synchronizer provides a local copy of data on a server so that applications can utilize it regardless of network connectivity. As data changes on the server, Synchronizer updates the local copy and as the user publishes changes made locally, Synchronizer makes the modifications to the server
    2.adobe speed launcher
The Speed Launcher runs automatically when your computer starts. The Speed Launcher is not required in order to use Acrobat  or Adobe Reader . However, if you disable the Speed Launcher you may notice an increase in start time when you run Acrobat  Acrobat 3D or Adobe Reader
    3.Soundmax
only removes the system tray icon of analogdevices(soundmax digital audio)
    4. jusched.exe:
A background process of sun microsystems  which checks for java updates. It uses  an active internet connection as well in the background.you will not require this program unless you are using java based applications or the java runtime environment(if you want to update java you can go to control panel options an update it from there)
    5. DLACTRLW.EXE:
What does DLACTRLW.EXE do?The Drive Letter Access component allows you to drag and drop files directly to the CD-R or DVD-R drive on your computer, just as you would to any other folder. It writes the files onto the CD as you copy them, taking a lot of the complication out of burning CD or DVD discs with Windows.
Is it necessary?Only if you actively use the feature. If you burn CDs and DVDs in a traditional way, such as starting up the CD-writer application and choosing files from there, then you can safely disable this program from running at startup.
I donot know what utilites  you tend to use from the thinkvantage menu so cant answer regarding those processes.
     Hope my info helps you

  • Long delay selecting Application or Document in Finder column view.

    MacBook
    OS 10.4.11
In the Finder in column view when I select an application or a document (folders are fine) the rainbow pinwheel comes up and it takes a minute or two to show the item in the preview pane. Once there it works.
Also, when I am in an App like MAIL and I want to attach a file to an email I encounter the same delay when I navigate to the item I want to attach.
This all began when I bought and installed Final Cut Express and did all the recommended software updates from SOFTWARE UPDATE.
On a related note, FCE has an odd little bug that makes the first few frames of a clip solid green. Not sure if that's related or not.
So there you have it. As far as I can tell I've installed everything properly and SOFTWARE UPDATE says I'm good to go.
    Your help is appreciated.

Hi brudly, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Long delay after switching application

I have a project which has about 1000 clips.  Every time I switch to another application and then back to Premiere, it takes a very long time before Premiere can respond to any action.  Initially, I thought it's b/c memory.  So I added more RAM and see about 50% of RAM free.  However, this does not help.
One day I deleted a clip in Explorer and switching back to Premiere.  After the long delay, it pops up a dialog asking me where is the clip.
So could the long delay is from scanning for clip changes?  If so, is there any way to disable it?
    thanks!

    Do you mean:
    1. The delay is unrelated to the scanning of clips
    or
    2. It's not possible to stop the scanning?
The project file is only 40MB.  I've had 100MB or even larger project file before and never see such long delay.  Could you please give me some pointer on how to reduce this delay (right now about 30 seconds)?
    Thanks!

  • Since downloading Rosemite I have had long delays in starting up my iMac ?

I downloaded Yosemite on my iMac on 20.10.14 and have been experiencing long delays in starting up each day ?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A GPU restart report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".gpuRestart". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Bridge CS4 has LONG delay in opening the first image

Photoshop CS4 upgrade was my Christmas present this year. I've been fighting this annoying "problem" ever since then...
I DO see this "problem" on my desktop PC, which is a Dell XPS-400 PC (with 2 GB of memory) running Windows XP (Media Center Edition) with SP3 installed. I DO NOT see this "problem" on my laptop, which is a Dell XPS-1530 (4 GB of memory) running Windows Vista SP1. I installed the Photoshop CS4 software exactly the same way on both machines, and I have the preferences set the same in both Photoshop and Bridge (and Camera Raw) on both machines.
Here's the situation: I first open Photoshop CS4 and then click on the Bridge icon in the Application Bar to open Bridge. When I use Bridge to open a photo, by either double-clicking the thumbnail, or right-clicking on the thumbnail and choose "Open" from the context menu, there is a 42 second delay before Photoshop opens the file. This long delay only occurs when opening the very first file.
Once that first image file is opened, double-clicking any thumbnail in Bridge will have it open in Photoshop CS4 in about 2 seconds. There will never be another long delay in having Bridge pass a file to Photoshop (or Camera Raw) again - until I close the applications and restart them. Once I restart the applications, the first photo takes 42 seconds to open....
This delay does not occur in opening the first image file if I right-click on the thumbnail in Bridge CS4 and choose "Open With" and manually choose Photoshop CS4.
Even if that is how I open the first (or several) image file(s), the first time I try to open a file from Bridge by double-clicking on a thumbnail (or right-click on a thumbnail and choose "Open") there will be that annoying 42 second delay before it opens.
It does not matter what the file format the first image file is (JPG, PSD, TIFF, or DNG), or what the file format of any subsequent image file is. As long as I do not close the Bridge and Photoshop applications, any subsequent file will be passed from Bridge to Photoshop in only a couple of seconds.
I have manually set the File Name Extensions in Windows XP, and in the Preferences in Bridge. Both have been set to open the file types listed above with Photoshop CS4.
I have uninstalled CS4, and have used two seperate Registry cleaners (CCleaner and jv16 Power Tools) before re-installing Photoshop CS4. This had no effect on this situation. I've run "chkdsk C: /r" several times, with no problems reported.
I have been searching through these forums for over 2 weeks now, and I have not seen anyone else report such a problem. I use my XP desktop much more than my Vista laptop, so I'd really like to fix this situation, but I don't know what else to try.
    Gregg Mack

    Don,
Thanks for all of your suggestions. I tried them all, but the problem remains exactly as it was. To properly document my efforts:
In Bridge's Preferences, I Purged and Compacted the Bridge Cache, then changed it's location to D:\Bridge_Cache (D:\ is a second physical internal SATA drive).
I can not tell the exact size the Cache is set to, but the slider in Bridge's Preference is very close to the left end (10,000) of the slider.
The Windows Page File is set to 3072 MB min and 4096 max, and it is entirely on the D:\ drive. (I have 2GB of physical RAM in the PC.)
I defragmented the C:\ drive using Diskeeper 2008 Pro Premier, and even ran a Boot Time Defrag.
Rather than set some exclusions for Norton Anti-Virus, I jsut disbled that Virus checking program for all of my experiments.
I deleted the Bridge Preference File by holding down the Ctrl key as Bridge was restarted.
I even deleted the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. I then rebooted the PC - twice. I then re-disabled Norton Anti-Virus.
The PC is approaching 3 years of age, but it is a 3.2 GHz Pentium D machine with 2 GB of RAM and two internal SATA drives. Every other application that I run on this machine responds reponsively. Again it is only the FIRST image file that I have Bridge hand off to Photoshop (or Camera Raw) that takes forever. The second and subsequent image files take a second or two.... That doesn't sound like it's an "old hardware" problem to me.
I'm willing to try anything else that you, or anyone else would like to suggest.
    Thanks
    Gregg Mack

  • What launch application do I choose to upgrade to os maverick

I have an Imac with os x 10.6.8 I am wanting to upgrade to maverick, but it is asking for a launch application? What am I supposed to select?

Since you seen not to know too much about upgrading software and knowing where to do this,
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I would strongly advise having, at least 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUoMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest version of Mavericks by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks from the Mac App Store.
    Good Luck!

  • Problem With Listener Service: Long Delay Starting Listener, Intermittent Connections

I am having trouble connecting to my Oracle database.  I'm not sure what the cause was, but now when I connect to a database that has been working fine for the past two years, I usually get a ORA-12541 error.
I run lsnrctl status on the server and get a prinout like this:
Copyright (c) 1991, 2010, Oracle.  All rights reserved.
    Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=dqaswn02)(PORT=1521)))
    TNS-12541: TNS:no listener

  • [SOLVED]Long delay opening files if multiple selection in file chooser

    neok wrote:
    Hi,
When I try to open several files in an application, (example: Gimp), by multiple selection in the 'open' filechooser, there is a long delay (about 1 sec per file) before the Gimp starts opening image files. During this delay, the disk access LED flashes continuously and iotop indicates that its jbd2 accessing (writing) on the / partition on my SSD drive. This is despite the fact that the image files are on an external USB hard disk and the Gimp would have no reason to write anything on the / partition. Even if it did, the image files are small (50-100 kb) and such a long delay would be out of place.
The significant thing is that the delay occurs _before_ the Gimp starts opening files. It seems the delay is in the filechooser making a list of the files to be opened. Once the Gimp starts opening files, it finishes quickly.
This sort of thing happens with other apps that can open several files by multiple selection in a filechooser.
Any hints please? I am lost here :-(
The delay is caused by (apparently) GTK which writes to the ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel file, to record all the files that are opened in the multiple selction. Even so, this writing seems too slow, even when opening a large number of files (the ones that I open by multiple selection, by an app that I am working on, are about 10k each, so opening a few hundred should not take the delay I see, about 30 sec).
Anyhow, I patched the problem eventually by chattr +i ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel to stop the writing. But I would prefer to disable the use of this file by configurtion rather than brute force, if there is such a choice.

I re-installed and reconfigured Arch so that I now have a fresh, uptodate system. In the process, I found that this problem occurs when I run the Gimp as a normal user. If I run it under sudo, all is well. I am strggling to find out why, but no results so far (have checked file permissions where I thought there may be a problem, but no joy).
    Any hints much appreciated.

  • Long delay on KDE login caused by Pulseaudio

    Hi all,
I am experiencing an annoying delay after logging into KDE. This happened very recently, where I moved to pure systemd and upgraded kde (I am not sure what the exact cause is). It looks like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1157890, but instead of not starting, I get a long delay.
    Example:
    timestamp 0 - login
timestamp 8 - desktop is loaded partially and startup freezes
timestamp 33 - loading the desktop continues
This is very reproducable, I logout and login again - the issue repeats with the same times. I have isolated the problem to /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11, line:
    /usr/bin/pactl load-module module-x11-xsmp "display=$DISPLAY session_manager=$SESSION_MANAGER" > /dev/null
Stracing it shows that it freezes after sending the load-module command to pulseaudio over the native socket in /tmp/pulse-XXX/native and waiting for a response. This takes about 25 seconds, the same as in the example above.
The above timestamp tests have been performed by adding the next to ~/.bash_profile:
    if mkdir /tmp/checks 2>/dev/null; then
    for ((i=0; i<=40; i++)); do
    [ -d /tmp/checks ] || break
    p=00$i
    p=${p:0-2}
    ps xww -o user,pcpu,cmd >> /tmp/checks/$p-ps
    cp $HOME/.xsession-errors /tmp/checks/$p-xe
    sleep 1
    done
    fi &
I then use the next to check the differences between two ps outputs (after using wc -l to count the lines in the files and using `date -r XX-ps` to check the timestamp):
    read a b; colordiff -u <(sed 's/[0-9]\.[0-9]//' $a-ps) <(sed 's/[0-9]\.[0-9]//' $b-ps)|less -r
Similar to http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermai … 11721.html which appears to be solved, but not for me.
Does anyone else experience this issue? Any solutions?
System is up-to-date, KDE 4.9.1, pulseaudio 2.1, systemd, laptop.
Edit: the problem occured since I patched kdm to set XAUTHORITY (not sure if that is related), after replacing with the original kdm binary, the issue seems to be gone is still existent.

Well yes, that just avoids the issue by preventing start-pulseaudio-x11 from starting. I'll try that workaround until a real solution shows up. Thanks for your reply.
I'll try this patch from Ubuntu quantal does not seem to work:

  • Click on bank estatement link brings up launch application. Safari doesn't do this.

I recently switched my financial work from Safari to Firefox because I am still on Mac Book Pro Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and, according to a recent web article, Firefox will provide better security than Safari, now that Apple has quit security updates.
When I drill down to this particular bank's link to view the estatement, the Launch Application box shows up. I tried Preview and Firefox. Preview does nothing and Firefox crashed.
I do not have this problem with another bank. I normally do not download estatements.
How can I avoid this nuisance (I went back to Safari to view this estatement).
    Thank you.

This issue is resolved for me; I no longer get Firefox's Application Launch window.
I set the Application Preference for "Portable document (PDF) to "Preview in Firefox". This works nicely for most of my estatements: a statement display without a download. Oddly, one estatement from a particular bank causes "What should Firefox do with this file?" The choices are to "save file" or "preview with default". A download happens in either case. (After printing the file I move it to Trash and do a Secure Empty Trash.) Finally, a particular quarterly estatement does not download and displays in a new window, which I presume is under the financial institution's site control. So, out of 6 various bank estatements, only one seems to require a download.

  • AppleScript to mount network share & launch application fails on computers

    Hi All,
I am trying to write a script that I can place in the dock that will perform two actions. The first action is to mount a sharepoint, the second is to launch an application.
I have been very successful at doing this on my iMac (Intel). The script works under any user.
However, I have a lab of 26 Mac Minis (Intel) and the script won't work!!
    Here's my script (it's simple!):
    tell application "Finder"
mount volume "afp://ok-xserve-01.mpcsd.org/Apps" as user name "[user]" with password "[password]"
    end tell
launch application "Type To Learn 3"
Of course, I replace the items in brackets with their appropriate values.
I save the script as an application. When I try to run it on any of the Mac Minis, I get the following error message:
    '"afp://ok-xserve-01.mpcsd.org/Apps" doesn't understand the <<event aevtmvol>> message'
I've tried it w/o "as user..." and also in the form of "afp://user:pass@server/share" but all returns the error message above.
I even logged in as the user on one of the lab computers, created the script, and it ran! As soon as I logged off and logged back in, it stopped working.
These systems, along with my iMac, are bound to an Open Directory & Active Directory, and authenticate via Active Directory.
I can log in as the lab user on my iMac, and the script will work every time I launch it. It'll work as any user on my iMac.
Any ideas? If you need more info let me know!
    Thanks!!

Try putting in the command "delay 30" before the other lines. It delays the script for 30 secs...OSX needs to load before running the script

  • Long delay getting new mail

I am experiencing a long delay in Mail getting new mail. Here's what happens:
    1. on launching Mail, it gets new mail immediately, so I know my account settings are good.
    2. once Mail is running, there is a long delay in updating new incoming mail -- can be hours. I have Mail set to check every five minutes. Also, I can manually click on Get Mail and I get a No New Mail beep even when there is new mail (see next point).
    3. If I use webmail to access my account, I can see new mail sitting in my In Box.
    4. if I quit and relaunch Mail, the new mail shows up.
I have an IMAP account which has worked well for years. This delayed behaviour started a few months ago when I was running Leopard. I posted a question but never got an answer that worked. Now I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.4, and hoped Mail would correct itself with the upgrade. It didn't.
I was once advised that it might have something to do with the Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > "Use IDLE command if the server supports it" setting. However, this preference is ticked and greyed out so I can't change it. (The advice was to turn it on or off and see if that was a fix).
I am running on an iMac 24" Core 2 duo (early 2008 model). After the Snow Leopard upgrade I repaired permissions and ran all the chron scripts. So my system should be pretty good.
I would be grateful for any help. I have clients call and say "I just sent you an email..." and I appear dumb because I have to go to webmail to get it right away.

It's getting better. I used Other to setup my mail acc via MfE, by tricking it to a non uniform mail. That worked, I changed it back to googlemail and guess what?! Next time I boot the phone, the MfE is gone. but it still registers in the background so I can't create a new one. Configuration Tool 6.3 does see it but cannot overwrite it. PixiEnables package and its font nonsens severly screw with PopUpClock, Screensaver and SleepingScreen memory boundaries so those three crash. Thanks for nothing MS apps -.-
