Long list of names - three columns

Hi,  I am tryhing to do the follow:
-  I have a long list of names which need to be continually updated.
-  List is in Alphbetical order
-  As the list is so long I want to have three columns per page.
-  How can I keep updating and making sure they are in alphabetical order without having to keep organising them.
If you select and put into ascending order it only does one column at a time not the whole list?
Please can you help.
Thanks.
Ozpaws

Hi Oz,
I'm disappointed that we haven't heard from you since my (and Jerry's and Jeff's) most recent posts.
I've done a bit of further exploring since then. Here's a sample of the results, using the same data as in my earlier suggestion, but with the result data moved into two three-column tables.
The result tables (Print3x, on Sheet 1, on the right, are scaleable to the size that will fit one to a page, and additional result table need only a simple edit to the formula before it is filled into the new table. The extra column on Print3a is required to avoid a self-reference error. All Print3x tables must contain the same number of rows.
Updating, as previously, requires a sort of the Data table (on Sheet 2, on the left) after new entries are made. Resorting of the result tables is automatic.
The small table, Counts, on Sheet 2, is for calculations related to the transfer, and may be hidden, or moved to a third sheet, if desired.
Formulas:
Counts::B2: =COUNTA(Data3 :: $A)
Counts the number of names in the list.
Counts::B3: =ROWS(Print3a :: $D)-1
Counts the number of rows (including the header row) in Print3a. Subtracts 1 to obtain the number of rows to fill with names.
Counts::B4: =COLUMNS(Print3a :: $1:$1)-1
Counts the number of columns (including the extra column) in Print3a. Subtracts 1 to obtain the number of columns to fill with names.
Counts::B5: =B3*B4
Calculates the number of cells used when the table is full.
Print3a:
A2, and filled right to column 3 and down to the end of the table:
=IF(0+ROW()-1+(COLUMN()-1)*Counts :: $B$3<=Counts :: $B$2,OFFSET(Data3 :: $A$1,0+ROW()-1+(COLUMN()-1)*Counts :: $B$3,0),"")
0+ROW()-1+(COLUMN()-1)*Counts :: $B$3<=Counts :: $B$2
Compares the number of cells used to this point with the number of names to be filled in. If the number 'used' is less than or equal to the number of names, then:
OFFSET(Data3 :: $A$1,0+ROW()-1+(COLUMN()-1)*Counts :: $B$3,0)
Fills the current cell with the next name from the Data table.
If the number 'used' is greater than the number of names, then:
places a null string in the cell.
Print3b:
=IF((Counts::$B$5+ROW()-1+(COLUMN()-1)*Counts :: $B$3)<=Counts :: $B$2,OFFSET(Data3 :: $A$1,Counts :: $B$5+ROW()-1+(COLUMN()-1)*Counts :: $B$3,0),"")
This is the same formula as used on Print3a, with the two bold parts replaced as shown to make each new table start at the right place on the Data list.
For the third Print# table, Counts::$B$5 would be replaced with (2*Counts::$B$5), etc.
Some difficulty to set up, but fully automatic once in place. To Print, go to Sheet 2, then Print. Limit the pages to print to pages 1 to the count of tables containing names.
Regards,
Barry
PS: I like Jerry's method—simple and easy, requiring only a copy and paste, then setting the Pages document to three columns. The second step could possibly be eliminated by setting up a three column template, and using that for the document to paste into. (NOT tested due to lack of time at the moment)

  • When I click on address book I no longer get the slot for inserting a name, instead a long list of names/addresses

    I've been sending new emails (not replies) this way: Click on address book. Up comes space to insert a name. I do so, find the name (among a few close to it), highlight it and then click "write." This produces an addressed email, which I proceed to write and send. But as of a day ago, when I click on the address book, what appears is a long list of names and email addresses. It fills most of the iMac screen. And there's no space to insert a name.
    Presumably I did something stupid to make that happen. What have I done? And how do I reverse it?
    Thank you.
    Arthur

    This doesn't answer your question about what's gone wrong.
    I think the Address Book is a rather lame place to start from.
    Click on Write, or Reply or Forward and the messages writing window appears. prefilled with the previous message text if it's a reply or forward.
    If you select the To: box and start typing, it will suggest names from the address book matching what you typed.
    If you really prefer to pick from a list, you can open a Contacts Sidebar which lists one of your address books. There are buttons to add selected Contacts to your message. You can drag and drop and use right click too. On a PC, F9 opens this sidebar, or you can use alt+v to get the View menu and then choose the Contacts Sidebar from the sub-menu. I'm not sure how much of this works on the Mac.
    So it's easy to add multiple addresses. You can set them as Cc or Bcc.
    Your method lets you address a new message, but doesn't support reply or forwarding. It enters all addressees as To: and you have to change them one by one if that's not appropriate.
    You see why I think the Address Book is bad place to start from?
    If this other approach doesn't work then I'd suggest you have a corrupted Address Book. Do you have a recent backup to restore from?

  • Scrolling a long list?

    I'm sure this is simple - how do you build a long list of names to scroll up the screen, like movie credits?
    thanks

    If you drag the corner of the presentation window, you can expand it so that it shows "blank" area to the left and bottom of the slide area -- doing this will allow you to see material that starts off of the slide itself. To scroll the text box up, position it so that its top edge is below the slide bottom, set the Build Out to "Move Out", and the direction to "Bottom to Top". Set the duration to fairly slow in order to make the text readable. The Move Out build has acceleration and deceleration built in to it, so you might also want to put some blank spaces in at the beginning and end of the text list in order to make the text scroll speed appear constant.
    Another way of doing this is to use a Move Action (from the "Action" dropdown menu in the Build Inspector). The Move Action has the option not to have this acceleration/deceleration.

  • How do I create separate cells from a list of names?

    I mostly use Numbers to alphabetize long lists of names to print labels at my work.
    I used to be able to just copy and paste a list of names into Numbers from Illustrator and it would put each name into it's own cell.... but lately it just pastes the whole list into one cell. I feel like there's some simple solution I'm just over looking!
    Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

    Numbers will properly paste lists when each item in a row is separated by tabs
    this will NOT paste correctly:
    John<SPACE>Wayne
    Tom<SPACE>Smith
    This will paste correctly:
    John<TAB>Wayne
    Tom<TAB>Smith
    replace <SPACE> or <TAB> as needed

  • I want to convert a series of names into a table (in either numbers or pages). The list I have has a name and then an email address in brackets, followed by a 'yes' or a 'no'. I would like to separate the list into three columns

    I want to convert a series of names into a table (in either numbers or pages). The list I have has a name and then an email address in brackets, followed by a 'yes' or a 'no'. I would like to separate the list into three columns - the first containing the name, the second containing the email address and the third containing the 'yes' or 'no'.
    Can you help me ?

    The question that needs to be answered is what is separating the columns? Is it a single tab, one or more tabs, spaces, or what?  Or is it the brackets that makes the separation between the three pieces of data?
    If it is always a single tab, that makes it really easy.  All you have to do is find/replace the brackets with nothing (as Wayne said)
    If it might be multiple tabs, you can find/replace tab-tab with a single tab and repeat that a few times until no more double-tabs are found.
    If it is one or multiple spaces, that might be difficult. I'll think about this one if this is what you have. I'll ignore this possiblility for now.
    If it is the brackets separating the three pieces of data, you would Find/Replace the left bracket with a tab then do the same with the right bracket.

  • First, Last name fields in Numbers -- Three columns on iWeb page

    I'm new to this (both Numbers and iWeb) and I'm trying to help someone with their page (it's for a local candidate).  They have an excel spreadsheet with names and a bunch of other stuff.  they want to put the list of first and last names on their "supporters" webpage, separated by a space, without having to do it manually -- at this point about 900 such names.
    I can get the names out of Excel and into Numbers, obviously.  And I think I know how to get the list into iWeb, if I can generate it (using an iWeb snippet, which I'd also love help with if anyone here knows THAT as well).
    What I can't seem to do is create a list, in three columns, with First name (single space) last name.  Whatever I put in the formula bar seems not to do anything. And I haven't even BEGUN to figure out how to generate the three-column list.
    Any help would be gratefully appreciated.  As dunce-worthy as possible -- believe me, I won't be offended if anyone talks down to me.

    Hi d,
    I think it's the "three column specification that's throwing me. You might need to clarify that.
    The names are currently entered with First names in one column and Last names in the adjacent column. Here's a way to combine the first and last names into a "full name".
    In the "Full" column, the formula is:
    =B&" "&C
    In Last, First, the formula is:
    =C2&", "&B
    To list the names in a three column table in iWeb, you may need to start with a three column table in Numbers. This one pulls the names from column D (Full) of the table above, and distributes them into three columns. The original table has had four names added, and has been sorted.
    Note that the original table has been named "Data".
    The Data table contains the formula(s) shown above.
    The second table, "Aux", calculates the number of cells needed in each of the three columns so that no column is more than one cell longer than the shortest. Doing this calculation in an auxiliary table greatly simplifies the formulas needed in the final table.
    This table contains a single formula, entered in B2, and filled right to D2. Note that A2 is referenced in the formulas in the final table, "3 Columns". A2 may be empty, contain text, or contain the number zero.
    B2 (and fill right): =QUOTIENT(COUNTA(Data :: $C),3)+IF(MOD(COUNTA(Data :: $C),3)>COLUMN()-2,1,0)
    The third table, "3 Columns" displays the names in three columns.
    It contains a single formula, placed in A1 and filled right to column C and down to row 10.
    3 Columns::A1 (and fill right and down): =IF(ROW()<=Aux::B$2,OFFSET(Data :: $A$1,SUM(Aux::$A$2:A$2,ROW()),3),"")
    Descriptions and further examples for the functions used may be found in the iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide. The guide may be downloaded via the Help menu in Numbers.

  • Making columns with a long list

    I preformed a query and got a long list.  The output doesn't take up that much horizontal space and so I'd like to make two columns with it to save on scrolling.  Is that possible with CSS?
    Here's my list looks like this:
    Name: Snowfresh
    Brewer: Edelweiss
    Overall: 3.5
    Name: Zepplin
    Brewer: Leibringer
    Overall: 3
    And the code:
    <p>German List:</p>
    <table width="182" height="145" border="0">
      <?php
    //Puts it into an array
    while($info = mysql_fetch_array( $data )) {
    //Outputs the image and other data ?>
      <tr>
        <td><?php echo  "<img src=http://localhost/beer_diary/images/beer_tasted_profile/".$info['image_id'] ."><br/>";?></td>
        <td><?php echo "<b>Name:</b> ".$info['beer_name']. "<br> ";
        echo "<b>Brewer:</b> ".$info['brewer']. "<br> ";
        echo "<b>Overall:</b> ".$info['overall_id']; }?></td>
      </tr>
    </table>
    <p> </p>

    Yea, CSS3 columns are about as helpful as CSS3 regions at this point.  I'd recommend this article for turning a list into columns:

    After the latest itunes update I can no longer see my iPhone listed on the left column. How can I get to the section where I can pick &amp; choose apps etc to be synced?
    Also I had to get a new iPhone &amp; so I backed up the night before to the cloud &amp; my computer. When I tried to restore from back up with the new phone my back up wasn't there - shouldn't it be automatic via wifi from the cloud?

    Your iphone is shown at the top of the page.
    You can also simply click View>Show Sidebar and it will look about the same as it did before.

    When i double click on Mac HD the view has changed and my user name is no longer listed on the left. How can I reset this?

    Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
    Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
    Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
    TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
    No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Recorded shows no longer list name of show, just name of episode - what's up

    On the web interface, I used to be able to see the name of the recorded show (e.g. NCIS) and multiple episode recordings were grouped under the name of the show.  Just noticed today that the name of the show is no longer listed on the web interface, just the name of the episode (which is not at all helpful in determining what show it belongs to.)  Anyone have an idea of how I can go back to what it was formerly.  Thanks.

  • Where do I send a long list of problems I have with non-functionality with the Lion OSX and new Safari for Lion.

    In the past two weeks I have been documenting my Lion problems.
    First, Arrows gone from finder windows; makes it difficult in comparing long lists of files in folder, or compare documents when reviewing line by line. This is obviously a change by people who do not compare long lists in windows comparing files between versions of projects ... the click to next screen is NOT equal to arrows.
    Second, Finder Redreaw - doesn't. Move files to a fold, if there are a lot of files, they image of the files being moved remains in finder (see attached screen capture) until Finder is restarted and if COPY function is running. last files in Copy queue are not copied.
    Screen capture 5 minutes after moving files to a folder - the selected file images are still in Finder after the move was completed.
    Third, it is SLOW, particularly going to an "Attach file" in email, drawing the content of a folder to select an attachment is long enough for me to go to the kitchen, get a drink and come back. Just like the old days of OS7.
    Fourth, shifting/recentering screen away from where I am working. Several programs, browsers, Adobe Photoshop/inDesign, and dear old Pages re center my screen - not to the center, but if I choose 30 of 70 images in a folder, it will shift … somewhere else in the folder instead of where I just clicked. If I am working on a document in inDesign or PhotoShop it will do the same - the cursor and screen drift elsewhere to find something it has been amused by. Sometimes it is a word, or a file, but often it is off the pastboard and on the etherial pasteboard on which the pages sit. Or if I'm zoomed in on an image, it moves to somewhere else.
    I use a mouse and keyboard, both Apple wireless. I do not use a trackpad, but have a tablet/stylus I am afraid to put into the mix until this crap is stopped.
    Fifth, SAVE AS… is gone. You must unlock, duplicate and edit the duplicate … and must rename it in Finder, or use EXPORT to save as the same format under a new name. SAVE AS… worked. Not broke, why fix it?
    Personal Comment: The problems seem to be the triumph of coked up software engineers ooohing and aaahing over "Wouldn't it be cool if..."   Cool, if they were Microsoft, and required everyone change how they have worked on Macs for the past (almost) three decades. Triumph of brainstorming over functionality.
    Sixth, I can't use Cocoa Booklet, but that really started in OSX 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Most of my X11/Cocoa programs stopped worked about that time. Apple is no longer supporting "open source"?
    But Wait! There's More...
    Seventh, Tonight, trying to download a 1.7 gig archive onto a disk where 280 Gigs were supposedly free, it would not download because, according to the wonderful new Safari and the wonderful new Lion, there is not enough disk space to download a 1.7 gig file in a mere 280 Gigs of free space.
    I might be able to move Snow Leopard onto the iMac, but my deciding factor was that Apple, in its wisdom, decided to make iBook Author unable to run under Snow Leopard. So moving to Snow Leopard means I have lost the ONLY benefit I get from the new computer and the new system.
    This really stinks.

    I proceed like the following :
    I created a region with type is SQL Query ,
    the query is :
    select x.name, x.code

    in a way that they appear in three columns.
    How can I change my query or how can I do it???????
    NOTE : using Lists is not a solution for me!!!!
    Thanks for any Help!

    First "392451", asking Raj the same question twice within a span of 16 hours will probably not get your question answered any faster. He is only one man and has a lot of questions coming in, not to mention other job responsibilities. Second, he's on the West coast, so is not up yet.
    Now on to your answer. I've used this phrase before, and it definitely applies here: This is not an HTML DB 101 answer. You asked a challenging question (and a good one at that), so the answer may challenge you a bit too. I'll use the emp table which has 14 rows for this example, but this should work for any table.
    First, lets get the empno and ename columns to use for our checkboxes. I'm going to create 2 additional columns, col_num and grp_by to use in the next step. The text description of "col_num" from the inside-out is: take the rownum, now divide it by 3 and give me the remainder (mod(n,3)) which will return 0,1, or 2, then replace any of the 0's with 3's so it will return 1,2 or 3. We will use these numbers for our 3 columns in the next step.
    The grp_by column is simply the rownum divided by 3, rounded up to the next highest integer. The results of rownum divided by 3 for the first 3 rows are .33, .66, and 1. When you apply ceil(n) to these, they all become 1. This will give us a column to group by in the final step.
    All of these queries can be run in SQL Workshop, assuming the schema you run it as has access to the emp table.
    OK, let's start with the first query:
    select empno,ename,
           replace(mod(rownum,3),0,3) col_num /* alias to col_num */,
           ceil(rownum/3) grp_by /* alias to grp_by */
          from(
                select empno,ename
                  from emp
                 order by ename)
         EMPNO ENAME      COL_NUM                                      GRP_BY
          7876 ADAMS      1                                                 1
          7499 ALLEN      2                                                 1
          7698 BLAKE      3                                                 1
          7782 CLARK      1                                                 2
          7902 FORD       2                                                 2
          7900 JAMES      3                                                 2
          7566 JONES      1                                                 3
          7839 KING       2                                                 3
          7654 MARTIN     3                                                 3
          7934 MILLER     1                                                 4
          7788 SCOTT      2                                                 4
          7369 SMITH      3                                                 4
          7844 TURNER     1                                                 5
          7521 WARD       2                                                 5Now, let's pivot the rows to columns. Any row with a value of col_num = 1 will be in the first column, col_num=2 will be in the second column, etc...
    select decode(col_num,1,empno||'-'||ename) col1,
           decode(col_num,2,empno||'-'||ename) col2,
           decode(col_num,3,empno||'-'||ename) col3
      from(
        select empno,ename,
               replace(mod(rownum,3),0,3) col_num /* alias to col_num */,
               ceil(rownum/3) grp_by /* alias to grp_by */
              from(
                    select empno,ename
                      from emp
                     order by ename))
    COL1         COL2        COL3
    7876-ADAMS
                 7499-ALLEN
                             7698-BLAKE
    7782-CLARK
                 7902-FORD
                             7900-JAMES
    7566-JONES
                 7839-KING
                             7654-MARTIN
    7934-MILLER
                 7788-SCOTT
                             7369-SMITH
    7844-TURNER
                 7521-WARDNow, we need to "compress" our results so the empty gaps are filled in. This is where the grp_by column comes in. I'll add a max() around the the_col1 etc column so I can use a group by on the query. I will then group by the grp_by column:
    select max(decode(col_num,1,empno||'-'||ename)) col1,

  • ITunes 11: In the store, I can no longer sort by name/artist/album

    I can no longer sort by name or artist or album when I'm in the store with iTunes 11.  Yes, I discovered the View Options in the Menu Bar. By when I select it nothing opens. Same for Command-J. It doesn't do anything either. I've tried hitting Command-J repeatedly, but nothing.
    The fact is, it seems utterly stupid to have this work differently than when you're in your library---by simply hitting name/artist or album in the bar at the top of the list. Having to sort lists in the Store via a completely different method than the lists in one's library is totally counter-intuitive.
    But back to my problem:  The View Options won't open for me. Anybody know how to fix this?
    I've got a lot of music I wish to buy, but I need different methods of sorting, otherwise it'll be a nightmare trying to keep track of things.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    I have the same exact problem.  I am using a Windows computer running Windows 7.  I was able to see them prior to the installation of 10.4.  I have this problem on 2 computers and have a hard time believing that no one else is having this problem
