Long-running Batch eWay JCD - threading and stopping

I have a requirement to poll for files on a remote server, every few seconds, almost continuously. Furthermore, without making a connections every polling interval. In other words, connect once and stay running, If a file is found, send a JMS message to another service that will process the file, but keep polling for more files. Thus, a long-running service. This will tie up the thread?
Can I have an array of BatchFTP instances, and in each loop of the long-running process, check each connected instance for incoming files? Or can I only have one instance?
If the domain is shutdown, will this service shutdown nicely, if it is still in its looping process? If not, I could check another 'command queue' for a shutdown command, but now I have to add code to the domain shutdown script to send that shutdown message to the command queue. Could I instead, somehow check the status of another service in the same project to see if it is shutdown, and therefore know to stop the loop and allow it to be shutdown? I saw an example of a JMX command to check the status of an object. Is that the best way to check the status of a jcd from inside another jcd?
thanks, Pete

Hi Chris and thank you,
I also do not want to build and manage a long-running service, from a performance point of view. The owners of the target server want a file to be picked up as soon as it arrives (within 5 seconds), but they don't want FTP connections created and deleted every 5 seconds. They expect that we will make a connect() call, and then continually loop / poll using dirlist() method.
When I look at this requirement I also think of re-using it as a generic service - as long as I have a long-running service, I might as well use it for any other long-running, open FTP connections to other servers/userids. So in the same jcd instance, I would connect to multiple FTP servers and execute a loop where I go through a list of FTP connections, and for each, I would go through a list of folders that should be polled (using dirlist method). So I only have one JCD running for a long time but it could have multiple FTP connections open. That is why I am thinking of using an array of BatchFTP objects.
When your code shows a Scheduler eWay input, do you mean that the JCD will triggered by the first Scheduler message, but would then go into a loop, doing work, and performing a JMS.receive on that Scheduler queue for the 2dn, 3rd, .. nth Scheduler message? So because the jcd is still running, it still had all its objects and FTP connections (open), but its looping is controlled by the Scheduler message?
I'm running 513u3. I am worried about shutdown. I think it might not listen to a shutdown command. So that is why I was thinking about putting in some code at the bottom of the loop that would check, somehow, if a shutdown is in progress.

• How to start a long running program at system start and stop at login and restart at logoff

I am trying to mine some crypto currency with my computer. My computer is usually in logged off state, so I want to mine automatically when system is in this state.
Untill now I have done this:
At system start, I have scheduled a task to start the mining software
at login I have scheduled another task to kill the mining process
Here comes the question: I need to restart the mining process as soon as the user logs off.
But I couldnt figure out how to schedule a task at logoff, so I decided to use Group Policy Ediotr's Logoff scripts. But the problem is, I can't seem to log off at all, because system seems to be waiting for the "script" to finish, and since it is
a mining process, it doesn't finish, and the user is never logged off!
How do I configure windows to resume mining after the logoff?

Hi!
I haven't been working much with mining, but you are thinking correctly with using the logon/logoff-scripts.
The problem is that the process for mining requires a user to be logged on, it runs i user-context.
So if you in some way can start the process to run in system context, you are good to go. (The mining process) But if this is possible at all I do not know, I think the miners are dependent on a user being logged on.

• Batch file to start and stop

Hi All,
Can we create a batch file to start and stop the services. I need to start all the services like shared, essbase, eas, planning, webanlysis and financial reporting, and at also need to stop them using windows batch file.(Using windows 2003 server....service pack 1). Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
The simplest script would be something like this. Save it as a .bat file, set all your services to manual and then set up a scheduled task to run this script when the computer starts.

• Can a long running batch job causing deadlock bring server performance down

Hi
I have a customer having a long running batch job (approx 6 hrs), recently we experienced performance issue where the job now taking >12 hrs. The database server is crawling. Looking at the alert.log showing some deadlock,
The batch job are in fact many parallel child batch job that running at the same time, that would have explain the deadlock.
Thus, i just wondering any possibility that due to deadlock, can cause the whole server to be crawling, even connect to the database using toad is also getting slow or doing ls -lrt..
Thanks

I think your ideas on rolling back, CR construction etc. are good guesses. If you have deadlocks, then you have multiple processes working in the same place in the database at the same time, so there may be other "near-deadlocks" that cause all sorts of interference problems.
Obviously you could have processes queueing for the same resource for some time without getting into a deadlock.
You can have a long running update hit a row which was changed by another user after the update started - which woudl cause the long-running update to rollback and start again (Tom Kyte refers to this as 'write consistency' if you want to search his website for a discussion on the topic).
Once concurrent processes start sliding out of their correct sequences because of a few delays, it's possible for reports that used to run when nothing else was going on suddenly finding themselves running while updates are going on - and doing lots more reads (physical I/O) of the undo tablespace to take blocks a long way back into the past.
And so on...
Anyway, according to the customer, the problem seems to be related to the lgpr_size as the problem disappeared after they revert it back to its orignial default value,0. I couldn't figure out what the lgpr_size is - can you explain.

• Batch file to start and stop services

I've setup a CF Probe on my Development Server to ensure my
CF Production server is up and running (services = Apache and CF
Application Server). It checks the PROD login page and if it times
out in 30 sec the probe fails. I understand I can execute a file
(batch file with net start and net stop) but the problem is I need
to have the probe somehow point to the .bat file on the PROD server
and not on the local machine. How can I remotely access this batch
file and execute it? I don't know how to point to the file on the
other server... can anyone help?

Hi Ken,
You had pointed me in the right direction regarding the
psstools in order to create a batch file that can remotely start
and stop services.
i used the psexec command and am able to successfully restart
the services needed remotely... however when i pick the file in the
coldfusion administrator (in the probes section) how to i point to
the batch file to run? it seems like the probe is not running the
script like i want... the file is located on the c:\ so i entered
c:\test2.bat...
Thanks,
Matt
Matt,
You should review the online help in the cfadmin for probes
and the links it points you to in the developer's guide. Basically
you need to define a new probe in the cfadmin by clicking the
"Define New Probe" button. One of the probe's attributes will be
what action. Define the action as a program and point it at a batch
file running psexec. You will probably need to run CFMX as a
specific user and not as localsystem, which is the default.

• Threads and stop()

Hi
I am struggling with the deprecated stop() method.I have a requirement in which I have to stop the thread from whatever it is doing after X amount of time.I cant go the interrupt route as my code doesnt satisfy any conditions for the interrupt to work (For Ex. sleep() and wait() ; running in a loop ; etc).
Stop method seems ideal to me ; as it does the work I want ; but cant use it as its not a good programming practice.
Assigning Thread to null also doesnt work.
Any ideas.
Thanks
Pankaj

Hope this helps
The proper way to stop a running thread is to set a variable that the thread checks occasionally. When the thread detects that the variable is set, it should return from the run() method.
Note: Thread.suspend() and Thread.stop() provide asynchronous methods of stopping a thread. However, these methods have been deprecated because they are very unsafe. Using them often results in deadlocks and incorrect resource cleanup.
// Create and start the thread
MyThread thread = new MyThread();
thread.start();
// Do work...
// Stop the thread
thread.allDone = true;
class MyThread extends Thread {
boolean allDone = false;
// This method is called when the thread runs
public void run() {
while (true) {
// Do work...
if (allDone) {
return;
// Do work...
Alternatively declare a stop() method inside your thread or runnable class and call this method to set allDone variable to false.

I have an iPad 3 and sometime use it to watch video online on the Internet - some exampels can be seen below - but every time I do, the video stops after 10-25 minutes. • Long-running BSP : Page timed out and should be reloaded.

Hi,
I'm a SAP Basis Administrator, so I have a poor knowledge of BSP technologies.
I have been asked by the developement team to deal with a Z* BSP timeout issue.
SAP release : 4.7 (6.20)
We have been provided a detailled scenario by the developemnt team :
The BSP is not launched from the portal, rather the ICM htpp port is directly called by the BSP.
We do not use the sap web dispatcher.
We have previously already increased the ICM htpp timeout to correct the "500 connection Timed outu2019
On the initial screen of the BSP , we have to fill in several cells (250) then save the input.
Afterwards, the BSP is running during a while (variable length), the user finally receives a blank screen and the timesheet does not respond ,the following error mesage occurs on IE :
Page timed out and should be reloaded.
However, on sap side, the user is still connected (SM04), and the work process is still running(sm66)
Once the work process has finished its task, we can check that the BSP has correctly updated
SAP tables.
The timeout origin is not easy to identify, since it can occur after 3minutes, 4minutes, 8 minutes
I 've tried to significantly increase keepalive value, rdisp/plugin_auto_logout value ... but it didn't help.
Any help to identify this timeout would be highy appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your attention.
Regards.

Hi RAOUL
First of all , is it ok of the update occurs several times , for eg updation of custom preferences or creation of documents,
If its the creation of documents , so u dont want multiple updates.
Now by increasing the timeout parameter , u have just increased the time before which a timeout page is displayed , but the process (if started ) will still go on in the background,
There is also a processing timeout which is http port specfic,
You can set this value in youe profile by the below.
icm/server_port_0
PROT=HTTPS, PORT=8001, TIMEOUT=45, PROCTIMEOUT=45,
The parameter PROCTIMEOUT is the processing timeout , i.e. after 45 secs , the ABAP process will be terminated and the timeout will be shown.
So u dont have to worry abt orphan processes ,
But this will apply all apps listenign on port "server_port_0",
To be more specfic , u can code the app not to commit if the timeout has been exceeded.
Cheers

• Long running threads (Jasper Reports) and AM-Pooling

Hi,
we are developing quite large application with ADF an BC. We have quite a lot of reports generated through Jasper that take quite long time to complete. The result is a PDF document that user gets on the UI so he can download it over download link. Reports that take over an hour to finish are never completed and returned to the user on UI. I think the problem is in AM-Polling because we are using default AM-Polling settings:
<AM-Pooling jbo.ampool.maxinactiveage="600000" jbo.ampool.monitorsleepinterval="600000" jbo.ampool.timetolive="3600000"/>
The AM is destroyed or returned to pool before reports finishes. How to properly configure those settings that even long running threads will do there jobs to the end.
We also modified web.xml as follows:
<session-config>
<session-timeout>300</session-timeout>
</session-config>
Any help appreciated.
Regards, Tadej

Your problem is not related to ADF ApplicationModules. AMs are returned to the pool no earlier than the end of request, so for sure they are not destroyed by the framework while the report is running. The AM timeout settings you are referring to are applicable only to idle AMs in the pool but not to AMs that have been checked out and used by some active request.
If you are using MS Internet Explorer, then most probably your problem is related to the IE's ReceiveTimeout setting, which defines a timeout for receiving a response from the server. I have had such problems with long running requests (involving DB processing running for more than 1 hour) and solved my problem by increasing this timeout. By default this timeout is as follows:
IE4 - 5 minutes
IE5, 6, 7, 8 - 60 minutes
I cannot find what the default value is for IE9 and IE10, but some people claim it is only 10 seconds, although this information does not sound reasonable and reliable! Anyway, the real value is hardly greater than 60 minutes.
You should increase the ReceiveTimeout registry value to an appropriate value (greater than the time necessary for your report to complete). Follow the instructions of MS Support here:
Internet Explorer error "connection timed out" when server does not respond
I have searched Internet for similar timeout settings for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, but I have not found anything, so I instructed my customers (who execute long-running DB processing) to configure and use IE for these requests.

• ProgressIndicator and hourglass for long running processes

Hi all,
Iam using Oracle ADF 10g with EJBs.
I have a long running process for which I want to give the user an indication of its progress. The process is run upon clicking a submit button.
I have tested the use of the combination of progressIndicator + poll according to the example of Gerger consulting( http://gergerconsulting.blogspot.com/2007/04/adf-faces-progressindicator-example-for.html) but it did not work. The problem is that my long running process hangs the page and the progress bar does not work until the process has finished.
I have seen a similar post in this foum (Re: How to run long background jobs in ADF applications where a user complains that there is not an Oracle method for running asynchronous processes from Oracle ADF.
I've tested to isolate my asynchronous process with the progressIndicator + poll in a single ADF page. The process is being activated from an invokeAction from the executables of the pagedef file. But again the process hangs the page and the progressIndicator does not display at all.
So I have abandoned the idea of the progress indicator and Iam thinking of using an hourglass.
Is there an example or guidelines of how I can do it?

Thanks John for your reply,
Iam still working on the progressIndicator. I have read the discussion thoroughly quite many times.
One thing I have not yet figured out from your discussion is how you manage to create the long-running-process thread within an action method within the managed bean and make the thread still be active, while the parent action method has finished.
Usually the managed beans attached to a .jspx pages has request scope. So a commandButton's action method (that will spawn the long running thread) will finish much earlier than the thread and it will kill the thread.
Thanks,
Dimitris

• Starting and Stopping Repository Mgr Service

Hello All,
I am running Forte 3.0.D.0 on Windows NT 4.0. At night, I run batch files to backup and clean the repository.
With previous versions of Forte (before 2.H) my scripts simply did an rpstop, rpcopy, rpclean and finally a rpstart to start the repository again. This worked great.
Now, however, I am running the Repository Manager as an NT service, so I can no longer run rpstop or rpstart (rpstart does not start the Repository Manager service).
One solution I have found is to use Net Stop and Net Start to stop and start the Repository Manager service, so my script looks something like this:
rpcopy...
net stop "Forte Repository Manager 3.0.D.0"
rpclean...
net start "Forte Repository Manager 3.0.D.0"
This seems to work fine most of the time, but occasionally the service won't stop or start (like when a workspace is open). My questions are:
1) Are there any other command line processes that people know of to start and stop a service?
2) What is Forte's recommended process for starting and stopping the Repository Manager service in a script?
Thanks for your help

• Cancel long running queries

Hi Folks,
Is it possible to submit a SELECT statment using OraSqlStmt object and retrieve the data so generated?
I want to submit a long-running SELECT query against Oracle, and have the option to cancel the query.
I can submit the query asynchronously NONBLK option of OraSqlStmt and then be able to cancel it. However, I also want to display the dataset returned by the query. But I think it is not possible to create a dataset / recordset or dynaset using OraSqlStmt.
THe question is:
How can I submit a long running Select query, be able to cancel it and if the query is not cancelled then be able to display the records in a grid? I am using VB6.
Thanks

Good news that this will be improved. Can't resist to post this Link: [plsql forum thread about start/stop.. | http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?forumID=75&threadID=927697]
I have experienced the same and also noted that it feels better to execute stored procedures in sqldeveloper
- by editing
- compiling (might hang if already busy)
- run from the same dialog just to get the the cylon's eye for emergency stops (which waits .... ) meanwhile jump to apex to fiddle with small table triggering exception to stop the procedure.
If stored procedure is executed from the list via 'right mouse click'-style then you see in the log-region "connecting to databse ... ." but no method to stop nor cancel or cylon's eye is well hidden.
When such "busy" is running I also noted that the database-connection right mouse click has greyed/inactivated the selections "connect/disconnect" so the next logical step for stopping via "disconnect" is out of the question.
I think this also boils down also to question whether the user has rights to see gv$session and be able to drop/stop busy/jamming sessions. E.g. public synonyms listing has small icons with mystic red :)

Of course, together with the ORABPEL-05002 error I got also the 'Transaction was rolled back: time out' message. Note that I have modified the transaction-timeout value to 180000. The error occurs during the night, with no heavy load of the server.
Recovering the assign activity brings back the process in the running state.

1. Which is cause of this error?
2. How may I automatically recover this lost activity? RecoveryAgent?

===============================================================

These are the possible cause to the problem and their solutions:
Poor performance of the dehydration database If you are using Oracle Lite as dehydration store, please switch to use Oracle 9i or 10g. If Oracle 9i/10g is already in use, check the database parameter 'process' and 'session' to make sure it can handle the expected throughput.
OC4J has too few available connections to the dehydration database. Increase the maxConnection number of the BPELServerDataSource at the BPEL_HOME/integration/orabpel/system/appserver/oc4j/j2ee/home/config/data-sources.xml (for developer edition) or IAS_HOME/j2ee/OC4J_BPEL/config/data-sources.xml (mid-tier installation).
Size of message is too big Two ways to deal with this problem:
Increase the transaction timeout at PEL_HOME/integration/orabpel/system/appserver/oc4j/j2ee/home/config/server.xml (developer edition) or IAS_HOME/j2ee/OC4J_BPEL/config/server.xml (mid-tier installation)
Decrease the auditLevel from BPELConsole -> Manage BPEL Domain -> Configurations tab. Doing so will reduce the amount of data saved to the dehydration store.

• Unable to run batch files in my EP server

Hi,
I'am unable to run batch files(go.bat and configtool.bat) on my EP server.Anbody please give me a solution.
With Regards
Pradeep.B

If your EP Server is on non-windows based environment then you cannot use go.bat & configtool.bat or else you can. If you are trying to execute these on unix based machines then you have to use go.sh & configtool.sh files.
