Looking For IDE For Servlet Authoring

Hello,
My head is currently spinning trying to find an IDE for my Java needs that doesn't require me to also wade through a sea of features I am not interested in.
I will be building modest web applications for a small private biotech company. We do research. I support the research effort with Web enabled tools.
So, I will be authoring mostly Servlets with occasional JavaBean authoring. What is a reasonable tool to handle that task? I like the looks of JBuilder. What about an opensource IDE?
For the curious, I will be using the TeaServlet template framework (opensource.go.com) for page creation. They have a nice tool called Kettle and I will use Dreamweaver's template feature as well.
Cheers,
Douglass Turner

  • Looking for ideas for transferring large amounts of data between systems

    Hello,
I am looking for ideas based on best practices for transferring Large Amounts of Data in and out of a Netweaver based application.
We have a new system we are developing in Netweaver that will utilize both the Java and ABAP stack, and will require integration with other SAP and 3rd Party Systems. It is a standalone product that doesn't share any form of data store with other systems.
We need to be able to support 10s of millions of records of tabular data coming in and out of our system.
Since we need to integrate with so many different systems, we are planning to use RFC for our primary interface in and out of the system. As it turns out RFC is not good at dealing with this large amount of data being pushed through a single call.
We have considered a number of possible ideas, however we are not very happy with any of them. I would like to see what the community has done in the past to solve problems like this as well as how SAP currently solves this problem in other applications like XI, BI, ERP, etc.

Also I've noticed that if i move / copy things with Dolphin they're substantially slower than if I use cp/mv. But cp/mv works fine for me...
Also run Dolphin from terminal to try and see what's the problem.
Hope that help at least a bit.
Could you explain why Dolphin should be slower? I'm not attacking you, I'm just asking.
Cause I thought that Dolphin is just a „little" wrapper around the cp/mv/cd/ls applications/commands.

  • Looking for ideas for a university "project"

    Hi folks!
I'm currently studying Java (optional subject) at university and we have to write a program for evaluation. The problem is... which program should i go for? I've thought in a little game ( it can't be a chess game, as it is what the teacher has given us as example)... What do you think? Any suggestions?
What about a simple filemanager? don't really know because it has to be multiplatform... Well, i'm counting on you guys!
    Thanks in advance!

They're not too involved, but will let you not only use OOP/OOD principles, but it will also give you time to build a GUI, which also requires the same principles.
    Now as you mention it...
At the moment, the whole class has to do some 'mini-projects', including rudimentiary documentation. The favourite topics are management of either employees or goods, or projects similar to it. A friend of mine (a very talented webdesigner, from my point of view) started to program a media collection application. So it seems to be typical, what we are approaching.
It is true, that these applications are very good to start off, but the applications itself could also be realised in form of a script, as they do not necessarily require self-defined classes and their instances to be used. I tried to advance further (as my interest in programming goes somewhat beyond what we learn in school, with 1 (!) lesson per week) and started to play around with properties and inheritance. Very interesting techniques and I slowly come to understand, what OOP is all about and it's really fascinating to go deeper and deeper into the issue and to understand the fundamental things, not just the surface we're taught at school.
It may sound childish to a experienced programmer, but actually, 2 years ago, I was not a bit into programming. I started up Microsoft Visual Studio .net and forced myself to play around a bit with programming. I soon came to the result, that this is actually extremely fascinating. Due to my own laziness, I never to got to advance to a level I actually wanted to achieve, but I think this is slowly changing, mostly due to the fact, that I've become interested in all of this open source thing. It's not only about using F|OSS for everyday work, it's more the will to be a lively member of the community, which is able to share some of its knowledge in order to improve the whole project. So, if I ever manage to go beyond the barrier of my own laziness, I have some (from my point of view) intesting projects to start and am very much looking forward to participating.
To return to your initial question: How much time and experience do you have? As a beginner, I try to understand your situation as I am actually in the same one and had to do a project for school for myself. If you have more time at your disposal, you could try out some advanced stuff, like not merely employee management, but a simplified company management software or things like that, you could even program a operating system 'control center', with a rather limited approach, but it is indeed an interesting idea, which I also have in mind as the biggest project yet to come. If you can emphasize on ArchLinux, you could sit down and try to program a GUI control module for some service, the operating system is offering. Look out for appealing GUI frameworks (GTK or Qt) and their Java bindings. I wish you good luck.

  • Want to get published? I'm looking for ideas for The Online Learning Idea Book, Vol 2

I edited The Online Learning Idea Book a few years ago and it has been an amazing success! I regularly get emails from readers telling me how much the ideas have helped them. I’m hoping you will submit ideas and help me find additional contributors for the new volume! You can see some of the ideas from the first volume here.
Because the book has been so well received, Wiley has recently asked me to produce a new volume with new ideas. Why submit ideas? Here are three good reasons:
Helping others in our field improve the quality of online instruction
Gaining well‐deserved recognition for your solutions and insights and willingness to share those solutions and insights to help others (each selected idea will receive full attribution)
You’ll receive a free copy of the book if your idea is selected.
Want to know more? Go here to download the                      FAQs.
I'd love to receive some ideas that show unique ways to use Connect but feel free to submit other ideas as well (the FAQs explain what I am looking for in detail).

  • Looking for ideas for a: Photo Gallery portlet

    Hey all,
I'm wondering if anyone out there uses any special code or 3rd party apps, or anything to fancy-up a portlet to display photos?
For the last few hours I've been working to integrate CoolIris (http://www.cooliris.com) with a Publisher portlet but have run into a snag that I'm having some difficulty debugging. But rather than spinning my wheels on this one solution, I figured I'd reach out to all of you to see how you display event/holiday/etc types of pictures within your portals.
Ideally I'd love for our users to be able to submit images directly through a Publisher portlet and create something more flashy than just a static image that they have to scroll through.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Geoff

I'm looking for the same functionality.
What I'm thinking of doing is to use a document library component for users to upload and manage images. Then use Content Presenter to display the images.
    Problems:
    - Content Presenter doesn't do folders well.
    - default templates don't show images
    - icon view only shows an icon representing the type of content
Another option is to use the wiki as at http://wiki.oracle.com/photos/albums . Don't know if that can be done yet but cuold be easier for users.

  • Ideas for Providing User Level Data Backup and Restore

I'm looking for ideas for implementing a user level application data backup and restore in an Apex app.
What would be great is to have a user be provided an export file and a way to import this file. A bit overkill but hopefully never needed.
Another option that is perfectly doable is a report that simply provides a means to create an export of the data. Since I already have an interface I can use an export to interface an export.
    Any thoughts?
Hopefully I'm missing something already there for an end user to use.

    jlincoln wrote:
"Do you mean "export" and "import" colloquially, or in the specific sense of the exp/imp/datapump utilities?"': I mean as in imp/exp Oracle utilities. Generally speaking, it would be neat to be able to export and import via an Apex an application. In this hosted environment I don't have that access but would this be a bad idea if you don't care about the existing data in the schema in which the data resides?I can envisage a mechanism using <tt>exp/imp</tt>, but since it requires <tt>dbms_scheduler</tt> external jobs and access to the file system it's highly unlikely to be possible in a hosted environment. (Unless you're doing the hosting?)
Backup: Necessary for piece of mind and flexibility. I am working on a VB/Access user who does this today to get to the point when they can be comfortable with the backups occurring regularly and by the hosting site's DBA group.
Restore: Like I said. I am working on a VB/Access user who does this today to get to the point when they can be comfortable with the backups occurring regularly and by the hosting site's DBA group. This is a very small data set. A restore would simply remove existing data and replace it with the new data.My opinion is that time would be better spent working on the user rather than a redundant backup and restore feature. Involve them in a disaster recovery exercise with whoever is hosting the environment to prove that their data is safe. Normally the inclusion of data in regular, effective database backups is sold as a major feature of APEX solutions.
"What about security/privacy when this data ends up in uncontrolled environments?": I don't understand the point of this question. The data should not end up in uncontrolled environments. Just like the data in the database or its backups.Again, having data in a central, shared location protected by multiple levels of application, database, and OS security is usually seen as a plus for APEX over VB/Access. Exporting the data in toto to a PC/laptop that can be stolen or lost, and where it can be copied to USB drives/phones/email loses this protection.
User Level: Because the end user must have access to the backup and restore mechanisms of the application.
Application Data: The application data. Less than 10MB. Very small. It can be exported in a flat file downloaded by the end user. This file can then be used to upload and import via an existing application interface. For example.
"I'm struggling to parse this for meaning.": When I say I have an existing interface I am referring to a program residing in the Apex application that will take data from a flat table structure (i.e. interface table), validate the data, derive data, and load into the target table structure.Other than the report export capability linked to above, there's nothing built-in to APEX that comes close to your requirement. If the data is simple enough that it can be handled in such a report, and you have a process that can read and recreate this export, then you have your backup/restore capability. If the data can't be handled in a simple report, then you'll need a more complex PL/SQL process to generate the file.

  • Ideas for Title, Credit on Video Project

    Hi all:
Just looking for ideas for a video project for children that I've about completed. The elements left are the titles and credits.
So, I thought about making backgrounds/text with Elements. Drawing type? Crayon? Colorful? Pastel? Floating? Ragged Edge Background?
Besides ideas that are youthful...."kid like graphics", I'm not sure how to keep the text aligned so that it doesn't jump when I dissolve or transistion between video text events.
Hope this makes sense. Ask away if it doesn't.
    All ideas appreciated.
    Mike

Thanks Ward and Grant.....good suggestions to get my mind working. Sometimes you get in a rut with ideas.
Grant, as to your question/comment on text alignment.
Most video editors accept just about any image that a person can create using a program like PS or PSE. You just have to import the images in as bitmaps or PSD...etc. My idea was to create my text elements, in this case, credit and titles, using PSE because it's so much more powerful than a basic CG or credit generator.
So, I'd have multiple pages with lines of text on each page. Creating those isn't unique.
But, the one thing that I can't seem to make the work flow easy with is this: If you create an image with PSE that has one line of text on it, then how can you easily repeat that placement of text in another image? Horizontal and vertical? I thought about using the grid, but that seems sort of----well---sloppy. Isn't there another "sure fire" method. For instance, in most video editing software packages you can place the text based on X and Y coordinates. That makes it easy to do over and over again. Oh, hey maybe the key in doing this would be to simply copy and then re-edit the text.....but I'm not sure about that yet. Maybe I'm just dreaming or complaining too much.
Hey thanks again for the ideas.

  • Ideas for program

I am currently studying for higher ed, and taking a class that includes AS3 teachings. For my exams I am expected to present a program I've made, and I can make anything I care for, it should be of some size and so I am having difficulties choosing something that would be easy enough to be made in a couple of months, but challenging enough to show my skills.
I am looking for ideas for what I can make that fits these criterias, all suggestions are welcome

The first thing you need to do is assess what skills you have or wish to demonstrate.  If you don't yet have the skills this can make choosing a project more difficult because learning new skills is more time consuming than demonstrating them.  Anyone with the skills and a couple of months to spare could create an impressively large project for themselves.
So if you already have the skills, then you should aim at something in the form of a service-provider web site that has multiple interactive features and relies on imported content/data.  Maybe something in the way of a dating site where people can sign up, submit photos, fill out forms, be analyzed thru automated evaluations, get matched with others, watch marketing movieclips designed to lure them into signing up, etc...  I don't want to stress a dating site, but something that covers a number of different types of presentations, processing, and data delivery elements.
If you don't already have the skills, and are expected to learn them over the same months that you are expected to be creating this project, then you should refer to whatever course syllabus you have, maybe even discuss it with the instructor and other students, so that you'll have a better idea of the expectations of this project's scope.

  • Ideas For Project

Hey guys I'm a third year computing student. I'm looking for ideas for a 500 hour project(note willing to spend more time if necesary). The catch is I will be starting from scratch as far as Java programming goes. I'm aloud 30 hours of project time to learn Java. I've looked at the basics of java today and it seems quite nice syntax wise.
Anyway if any of you guys have some ideas but not the time then please feel free to offer me some suggestions. I would prefer to do something pushing the boundaries as i get a $4000 grant if the wise New Zealand government deem the project to be worthy of a technology grant.
Thanks in advanced, oh and this is my first post yay me.

hmm, maybe. Has nothing like that been tried before in
    java?
oh and just to be in keeping with 90% of post in this
    forum.
Can you give me the code :)You have been very observant... and no.
I don't believe an RDBMS has been written entirely in Java...because in addition to the act of creating the database, you have the extra requirement of figuring out how to make it NOT run like a pig...as some DBs use raw partitions and their own filesystems to extract maximum performance... and a 100% Java Database would have performance issues to contend with..although the idea of pure platform portability would be a big plus..it might not outweigh the transaction cost.

  • Need Ideas for Minimalist Website and Image Gallery

I am looking for ideas for creating a minimalist online image gallery/portfolio? I want to either use html for the site and then flash for the portfolio images or some other method. I want to click on the thumbnails and then a large image will open.
Should I use Flash, Dreamweaver, Would it be easier to load the images dynamically to a folder. Does anyone have an example they could show me. Thanks.

I second Mahendra's suggestion for JAlbum Excellent product!  Just so you know, you don't need to use their image hosting.  Simply download the software and install it on your PC.   The beauty of JAlbum is that it generates thumbnails and HTML pages for you from your folder of images.  Lots of different Skins available. CSS can be customized.  And you can't beat the price.
Minimalism is nice but on the web, if you don't have some real text in the HTML markup you're essentially invisible to search engines, language translators and web assisting technologies like screen readers.  I realize this is a portfolio, but you want to maintain some degree of visibility so people can find you.  For this reason, Flash sites don't do well.  HTML is preferred.
    Good luck with your project,

  • IDES  for Retail 6.00

We have recently installed IDES for Retail version 6.00 for demo and evaluation purpose at a client's location.
Where is the documentation for the preset master data and business process supposed to be?
I was hoping that , as the business processes described in the link http://help.sap.com/saphelp_ides/helpdata/en/ed/5b37352752af34e10000009b38f889/frameset.htm would run for IDES for Retail 6.00. But surprisingly, they do not. Perhaps they are relevant only for IDES 4.6B only.
So how do I give the demo of the latest IDES for Retail version 6.00?
    Help out folks!
    With regards,
    Milan.

  • Good IDE for JSP/Servlets Development

Guys, I was looking for a good IDE for JSP/Sevlets development. I for myself wouldn't need or atleast wouldn't want to have one, but for our production they say they need one. So please can u guys advise one. I have downloaded and tried JDeveloper but it just hangs, dont know but looks like its too memory intensive. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance

IBM's Websphere Studio Application Developer (WSAD) is a good one. It can also connect to any CVS servers, which allows you to control the versions. Hope this may help you...

    1) Netbeans, at http://www.netbeans.org
    2) Forte for Java, http://www.sun.com ; poke around to find it.
    3) JAWA. The address(& the spelling) fails me.
I'd personally recommend 1&2, it runs on most platforms, its packs quite a lot of features. But it is quite resoure hungry and you do need a lot of memory. About > 256 .
I have not used the third one, but quite a few people here seem to like it.
There is another one in development, http://www.eclipse.org , seems to be bankrolled by IBM.
