Looking for PPPoE host BUT connected to the Internet

Hi, so I have a home network that consists of a BritePort 8012-G1 which is set-up to connect to earthlink DSL using PPPoE with its login and password. The DSL modem is set in half-bridge mode (I am thinking of switching it to full bridge mode and authenticating with the airport extreme instead but that is really not my problem... if you have suggestions either way on this topic feel free to post in this thread but that is not the issue I want resolved) and passes ip and dns server information correctly to the airport extreme. The airport extreme is setup to share the internet connection using DHCP and NAT. There are 6 devices that connect to the airport extreme, 5 of which work perfectly. The ones that work are a Mac Pro running 10.5.4 connected through ethernet, a Macbook Pro running 10.5.4 connected through wifi, two iphones that connect using wifi when in the apartment and a nintendo wii also connecting through wifi. The last device, the one causing problems, is a macbook pro running 10.4.11 which is connecting through wifi.
The problem with this last computer is that when it connects to the airport extreme base station it continually says looking for PPPoE host in the menu bar. The strange thing is that the computer is connecting to the internet (you can browse the net and download stuff) even though it is showing the message. Even stranger is that in TCP/IP it doesn't show any DNS information (it should show the airport extreme). I had never had this happen before, but I recently changed the security settings on the airport from WPA/WAP2 to only have WAP2 so I thought that maybe by reversing it to the old setting the message would go away, but it didn't happen. You may all wonder why I think its a problem if I can still surf the net and download stuff, well first of all seeing the message is annoying, but more importantly it seems to have an effect on the speed at which I can surf the web on that computer. It is much slower than the other devices on the network and maybe it is even slowing down the network as a whole.
Just so you know, I have looked to make sure that all the use PPPoE settings are off in both the airport and ethernet configuration for this particular laptop. I have even turned them on and back off for good measure but it seems to make no difference. I have disconnected myself from the router and re-connected hundred of times.
Thank you for you time!
Daniel
PS Yes I have searched the forums before posting but everything I found about looking for PPPoE host had people not connected to the internet

I can't connect to my ISP using PPoE either using Firmware 7.3.2. I had to downgrade to 7.3.1 to connect to the PPoE.

  • All of a sudden - Looking for PPPoE Host

Setup: I am connecting to the internet via Airport Express, through an ISP provided modem. I am using PPPoE as the protocol for connecting to my ISP.
Problem: The setup was working perfectly for me, when all of a sudden 5 days back, I got the ticker message on my taskbar "Looking for PPPoE host". I went through all the configurations using the airport admin and assistant utility. However, if I connect to the ISP provided modem through the ethernet cable using PPPoE, everything works perfectly. I have been tinkering with this for the past four days, and I have no clue as to what is wrong. For some unknown reason, the airport express base station cannot connect to the ISP (all of a sudden). Please help.

    Hi,
I just got a brand new loaner Airport Express from a Friend. It came with the new Firmware and I used it on my ADSL Connection. (Modem to AE).
Then, one morning, I wake up and connnect my PowerBook to the system. It works fine. I leave for office, return with my Office laptop and install the Airpot Stuff on that too, to connect. Anyway long story short. All works well.
Now morning arrives again, and nothing working at all. I keep getting the "Looking for PPPoE " message and I know it got nothing to do with my new laptop as I have directly plugged my PB to the modem and it dials/connect without a porblem.
I checked the setting in the AE panel and thats fine too. I don;t know whats wrong or what to do. I've temporarely switched back to my NetGear Router until I can find out whats wrong with the AE.
Can you tell me how it's been for you? Were you able to solve the problem?

  • Can't config but connects to the internet. Plus other problems.

    Hello all,
I believe all my problems started today after installing the 10.5.8 update.
At first, I couldn't connect to my external hard drive networked through my AirPort Extreme. After plugging in/out the base station, I was able to access it for a little while, but then it went away again. It would still show up in the finder side bar, but when I went to connect it would just get stuck at "connecting..." Sometimes I would get lucky and it would say "Connection failed" and warning 6753 would pop up about making sure my AirPort was connected.
Next I tried to use the AirPort Utility to look at my settings, and though the AirPort shows up on the initial page, when I click "Continue" to change the settings, it once again gets stuck at "Reading the Airport Extreme Configuration" and then warning 6753 would show up again.
I then gave it a hard reset and a factory reset to no avail.
After some research, I've tried to connect the base station via ethernet, but I still get stuck at "Reading the Configuration" as I did over wireless.
The funny thing is that although the AirPort is supposedly unconfigured and flashing amber, it is still connected to the internet, showing up as an open Apple Network, and I'm using it now to write this post.
Any thoughts on what is going on here? Being able to access my hard drive data without lugging it all over the house would be nice again!
I bought it about a year and half ago also. It's my first one, so I'm not sure what their expected lifespan is.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

  • Cannot send or receive mail but connected to the Internet

I am in a public place using their community wi-fi but cannot send or receive email even though I am connected to the Internet.  I tried using the "Connection Doctor", but that did not help.  Thank you!

Some Wi-Fi hotspots, especially free ones, block all ports except those used for web browsing. If that's the case, you should be able to check your mail in a web browser, if the account has a web interface.

  • My Airport Express does everything BUT connect to the internet

So my AE just up and died, and the usual troubleshooting steps haven't worked. I can connect to the internet via Ethernet, and my girlfriend can't connect either, so it has to be the router. I can still join the network and print, so the wireless works fine. I've done the hard reset, and the left it unplugged for 5 mins before replugging, but neither work. I've tried the Airport Setup Assistant, and the Network Status in System preferences would actually tell me I'm connected to the internet, even though AE is flashing orange.
What could be wrong here, and is there anything else I can do at this point?
    Here's my setup:
    *Airport Express
    *Powerbook G4
    *OS X 10.4.11
    Thanks.

  • Picking up wireless signal, but it's not letting me connect to the internet

I live in a college dorm, and I pick up an airport signal from someone else, and last night the internet was down all around. This morning however, it came back up and I have a full airport signal, but I can't connect to the internet through it. Additionally, it keeps scrolling, 'looking for PPPoE host', and I keep getting a little pop up window from internet connect asking me for some password (I'm not entirely sure what password). I was messing around with the settings on my computer last night making sure that it wasn't my computer, and I may have done something but I'm not sure what. Does anyone have any idea what I might have done and how to fix it? I would go to the help desk here but they said they can't see me until Thursday, so any suggestions anyone has would be helpful.

Hello dancerhelen2006. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
This morning however, it came back up and I have a full airport signal, but I can't connect to the internet through it. Additionally, it keeps scrolling, 'looking for PPPoE host', and I keep getting a little pop up window from internet connect asking me for some password (I'm not entirely sure what password).
This typically would indicate that your computer is trying to use PPPoE (username/password) to access the Internet service. If the Internet provider does not require PPPoE, then this would not be necessary.
    Let's double-check your AirPort settings ...
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
o Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
o Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    o By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    o Configure Proxies: Manually
o Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    o Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
o Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
o Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • Switched from DSL to Cable, Can't connect to the internet

After switching to cable modem (Motorola SB5120 SURFboard) from DSL, I can't connect to the internet using my airport express. Everything is green - modem and airport, and the signal on my computer looks like I have full access, but there is a scrolling message... looking for PPPoe host. I have unplugged everything and restarted per the instructions on this site, but get the same result every time. My computer connects just fine using direct connection to the modem. I saw a download for a firm ware update for the express, but don't know how to apply that, either. Any help out there?
    Thanks!

Hello mom2gr82. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings...
AirPort Express Base Station Setup (AX) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
o Power-off the Cable modem, AX, & computer(s); Wait at least 30 minutes.
o Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AX; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    Setup the AX
Connect to the AX's wireless network, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Create a closed network (unchecked)
    o Wireless Security: Not enabled
    o Channel: Automatic
    o Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    o Connect Using: Ethernet
    o Configure: Using DHCP
    o WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    o Distribute IP addresses (checked)
o Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    Change Wireless Security
o Wireless Security: WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal
o Encryption Type: WPA and WPA2
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    o Enable Ethernet Port (checked)
    o Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    o Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
o Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)

  • WRT54G v8 can't connect to the internet

I tried to run the easy setup disk, and when I get to the part where it is testing my internet connection, it says it can't connect and to turn off/turn on my cable modem.
I have completely powered down the cable modem, the router and my PC.  I ran through the steps again to no avail.
I can connect to the router.  I can ping the router.  I checked my ipconfig and it looks fine.   I can connect to the internet directly from the cable modem, but not via the router.
I've run through the help on this site and tried all the steps to troubleshoot, and they all work-- except I can't get online.
I called my provider-- Comcast to see if they had some MAC address registration-- they don't.
I am setting this up for my mother, and even came back today with my own personal Linksys-- which I know works, and I can't get that one to work either.
    What do I do now?

Ok I figured it out.  While I was waiting, I decided to try changing the MAC address to enabled and then copying the address from my PC.  I completely rebooted, and suddenly it worked.
My question is, How would my 57 year old this-is-my-first-laptop-first-internet-first wireless-router- mother be able to figure that out?  It seems strange that the Easy Install package doesn't address that and just leaves you hanging-- stuck on the "Can't connect to Internet" message.
Anyway, good luck to everyone else with WRT54G internet connection problems.

  • Acnt connect tto the internet

hi guys, my 17' powerbook for some reason wont connect to the internet via my wireless network. i have a belkin wireless network and all has been working great until now. For some reason my browser keeps telling me im not connected to the internet. but ive got a full signal and i can send and recieve emails. I have tried restarting the machine to no avail. i dont know what else to try. its a sudden problem as i say ive had many months of successful wireless surfing prior to this. anyone got any ideas please cos im stumped!!!!

    Just a note of interest.
If your connection is intermitant, nd you have it sometimes and sometimes not on your powerbook, and you can still connect, with other computers, it sounds like INTERFERENCE.
Sometimes changing the channel works, especially if you are in an area where there are several Networks set-up and running in your area.
Also be aware of different things like cell and wireless phones as well as microwave interference. Sometimes relocating your base station will fix this problem.
Other times if you are just having a problem with one computer, like a powerbook and you have a signal and it gradually degrades. There have been reports of loose Airport Extreme Cards as well as loose Antenna connections, shipped from the factory.
Another problem that has been mentioned in the fourms is the fact that many 3rd party Routers do not give any Mac Support. This is another reason many Mac users use the Airport Extreme Base because of the ease of set-up with the Airport Admin and Airport Setup Assistant Software.
One last thing many times the System Reset has to be preformed more than one time for it to work properly, and the reason is because of not waiting long enough and not following the exact sequence that are mentioned in the link above. The reset that I mention above is recommended by all of the Router Manufactures.
Chris, I have given you all the different problems that could be the reason for your delima, I hope one or more help. Don

  • Connecting to the internet via an internet stick/dongle

    Hi
I am currently trying to connect my eMac - to the internet via a stick/dongle and cannot find the appropriate vodafone software to make it work.
Software version 10.5 on the mac and have two internet sticks one - a Huawei K3770 and a K3571 both with Vodafone - Ireland
Any idea, please, on where I can download this software and anything else I can do to to make a connection to the internet?
The Vodafone software runs yet does not see either device. The connection through ethernet is great.
    Lance

    Lance,
First of all, would it be correct to assume that everything regarding installation and connection is exactly according to the mobile broadband modem instructions for your very operating system (see below for a link to the K3770 device guide page)?
    http://deviceguides.vodafone.ie/wsa/home.aspx?Id=3992&hwid=3845
Vodaphone should be able to inform you about any necessary software/firmware updates (these may be carried out automatically).
Generally speaking, if a computer for some reason cannot connect to the Internet because of system software version limitations (which does not appear to be true here, since Leopard seems to be supported) for a mobile broadband stick, a workaround will become necessary. One way is to use a dedicated mobile broadband router (with support for the USB mobile broadband modem and the network in question) with Wi-Fi capabilities, and then connect from the computer to the router via Wi-Fi. Another way could be to use a MiFi device, which combines the mobile broadband modem and the Wi-Fi base station in one small unit.
    Jan
EDIT: I just noticed Kenichi Watanabe's comment about the USB port speeds. This could of course be a limiting factor as well. Another one could be that the USB port is unable to provide enough power to the device. In both cases, a mobile broadband router or a MiFi unit may be of interest instead.

  • My Apple Tv is connecting to the Wifi network but is not connect to the internet.  So when I look for it on my Airplay it doesn't come up.  I have 3 other ones already working on the network and they are all fine.

My apple TV is finding and connecting to the Wifi network but then says it is not connected to the internet and then I cannot find it on the iPad through airplay.  I don't want it connected to the internet (as in www.) because for the use I have I only need to use the Apple tvs locally in a sports hall as scoreboards.  I have 3 others working on the same router and they are working fine (as of yesterday)
On my screen I see (obviously not written like this)
    network connect- yes
    signal strength- fine
    Ip address- fine
    DCN- fine
    Activation- Failed
This is the only negative I can find and the statement that the Apple TV has connected to the wifi but is not connected to the internet.
Where has it gone wrong for me. Please help

It is not properly connected to the network.
Make sure location is set correctly
DNS should be on auto (settings - general - network)
    Try ethernet
Signal strength on device won't account for issues, you would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks
