Looking to buy, SSD question, and more..

Howdy,
I have a MacBook Air (original, 3 years old or more). I love it. I have the SSD. I love it too.
I have had a few MBP's in the past with normal HD. However, I have never used a MBP with an SSD...
I am intending to buy a MBP (15" or 17") and am curious if the normal HD is loud/buzz/issue ? I am spoiled by the silence of the SSD, but the cost is a lot, so if the newer MBP's have improved HD's then maybe it will be ok..
Any one have any experience with both SSD and normal HD's on a MBP?
Also, any issues for the 17" I should know about?
Thanks!

I had the new MBP (late 2011 and early 2011) with both original Apple HDDs and now an original SSD, and I can say that the former two (both the Hitachi 7200rpm and Toshiba 5400rpm versions) had this constant buzzing. I never heard it on my 2009 or 2007 MBPs, so it's something new... not so loud, but having an SSD now, I can say it'd be really annoying to go back to it.
I'd reccomend you buy the MBP with the HDD anyway, and then buy an SSD seperately, change it yourself, and use the HDD as an external drive (in an enclosure you can find on eBay).

I'm looking at buying an IPad and was wondering if it has the capacity to replace a video camera.  I'm looking at the 128GB version and I know there are many variables.  But I'm thinking that it should hold at least 60 mintues of video before needing it to be downloaded.  Thoughts?

If you want to record good video, get a camera.
iPads can record video but they lack almost all other useful features of a dedicated camera - eg a decent lens, the ability to zoom, reasonable audio, removable media, small form factor .... and on and on.

  • Looking to Buy - but questions first

I'm looking at buying an AppleTV, primarily to play home movies that are saved on the computer (and to see pictures saved on computer).
Here's the dilemma - the computer in question is a Windows XP machine. Does AppleTV play nice with Windows XP?
I also have a MBP that shares iTunes library with the desktop PC. Will AppleTV see both computers/iTunes libraries? They should stay synced but I don't know what to expect from this kind of setup.
Do the videos that AppleTV will play have to be in iTunes, or can I have a directory full of videos instead of importing all of them to iTunes?

I don't have a windows machine so I can't answer that question. ATV will see both libraries as long as they are both under the same account.
The videos have to be in iTunes and the computer must be on to use home-sharing (streaming from computer to apple tv).
If you have an ios device (itouch, iphone, ipad) you can use that and stream directly

  • Looking to buy, but questions about wireless

I am hoping to buy a macbook very soon, but I have some questions about the wireless. I have heard that you can only use an apple router for the wireless, but already have a regular Linksys router. Is this going to be a problem?

I have been using a Linksys with Macs for two years and never had a problem.

  • An album cover question (and more)

I went to the trouble of putting album covers with my iPod and it worked great, except for once.
I have a crappy PC at home, so I use the Macs at work with my iPod. I have used at least four different computers and the 100 or so songs I uploaded on one specific computer that I only used once don't show the artwork on the iPod. The pics do show up on iTunes on all the comps I have tried.
Also, can I delete the covers? I put the wrong cover on a few songs and then put on the right one, but it still shows the wrong one on the iPod (I can switch between the two in iTunes, but that seems to do no good).
One final question (finally, right?). My crappy PC at home can't run iTunes and I've avoided hooking the iPod up to it, but can I use it just to charge the iPod, or am I playing with fire switching between platforms?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hey!
You aren't playing with fire so long as you don't load up iTunes on the PC at any point.Otherwise you might want to set your Pod to manually update songs thru iPod preferences. This way it won't sync and erase everything!
The issue with covers is pretty simple to correct(took me 4yrs to work it out!!).
Highlight the song in iTunes>get info>Artwork tab>select to delete or drag the A/W you want to display to first position.....done.
    Cheers,
    John
    PS
You can keep multiple A/W and chop and change whenever. Also,if you're running Tiger OSX get the album art widget, you can then apply to single or multiple tracks!Really cool!
    Cheers.

  • IMail Backup NOW Question, and more b/u

Hi:   My G5 (OX 10.4) is crashing and ready to die a slow (maybe fast) death.  It starts up once in a while....but mostly freezes on startup.  I tried to reinstall the original disk, but half way through it detects errors and can't continue..   It is running today (I shall leave on!)
SO:  I finally ordered a new iMac --- but there is a 3 way delay.
I wish, now, to backup critical stuff to a harddrive....then import later when computer arrives.
No problem on various DOCUMENTS, and iphoto and itune libraries.  Just drag and drop.
BUT HOW DO I BACK UP and SAVE all the mail that is in my iMail folders?   I wish to , eventually, move those to my new computer.
ALSO:  my AIRPORT has crashed as well on this old G5.  I cannot pull up the DSL signal in my home on thsi computer (I get, AIRPORT NOT CONFIGURED in the menu, though I've tried to set up with my DSL provider).  That's why I need to import using cable.
I appreciate the Apple Community help on this.
PS:  Before I start dragging and dropping today, is there an easy way to BACK UP all my various things (except applications, etc/)/
    JON

    Hi Jon,
Very best would be a complete clone of the Drive so Setup Assistant/Migration Assistant can import & convert all your stuff on the new one.
    But...
    On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book, quit AB...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
Though for AB, selecting All & exporting as a vCard file is more useful.

  • Pac-man question (and more...)

    Hi there y'all,
Can anyone explain what the difference is between original and normal modes in pac-man?
Also, does anyone know when more games will come out. I'm DYING to have Sudoku on my iPod. That would be sooooo perfect.
    Dan P.

    Hi Dan!
I know I don't have any experience with Pac-man, but you may want to email the makers of this game at this address: [email protected]
Also, does anyone know when more games will come out. I'm DYING to have Sudoku on my iPod. That would be sooooo perfect.
Nobody knows if Apple will come out with new games for iPods anytime soon or not (also, if you see the Terms of Use, we shouldn't discuss future Apple products).
You can, though, drop Apple a note on their iPod Feedback form. They will read what you have to say, and, if they have enough requests that game, it may be added in a future version of iTunes.
    I hope this helps you,

  • Oracle install questions and more....

    Hi
I am use to Oracle 7. I just downloaded *i from internet. On Oracle 8i personnal where are the Designer and Developer? How do I get to them.
Where do I get the password for SQL plus?
I have installed and deinstalled this 4 times thinking it did not install right. Now when i install it still has the old database names in it. I click on database, it goes to does type screen flashes (if you look quickly) Run time error. Then comes up with a small window. ora 001034 or 001131? invalid password.
I have uninstalled all products. I deleted Oracle directory and the old autoexec.bat. Did I for get anything? It said in install that there were 74 products. Is that the right amout for typical?
    Sid
    null

    dear sidney,
up to my best knowledge personnal oracle 8i is having only database, like personnal oracle7 its not having application development tool's like developer/2000 with it.for getting forms, reports, menu's etc.you will be in need to install them separately.
For getting password for sqlplus, two passwords for superuser are provided by default that is "system" having passwd "manager" and "sys".Same way there is one default user "scott" having passwd "tiger".If you will connect through "system" than you can create other user's by any name by command
"create user xyz identified by passwd;"
after that you can grant him previledges
    by command
    "grant connect,resources,dba to xyz"
if you will grant dba to any user than he will also be having all right's of superuser
    like dba user "system".

  • XMP questions and more switching from LR questions too.

    Hey all,
I recently downloaded the trial version of Aperture 3, as I'm thinking about switching from Lightroom 2. I do have a couple questions about XMP data though.
I understand that if I switch over my library to Aperture, I will lose all edits I currently have in LR because that information is subjective to Adobe dialog and so on. That's not a big deal, as I could just start new with Aperture while still keeping my old LR catalogs.
What I don't understand is if it's true that you can't save out edited XMP data? I work for a color-correction company, and we typically save out XMPs to send back to our clients. It appears that the only XMP data Aperture saves is core data, such as date, time, et cetera, but no adjustments. Sometimes I'll work on a photo, and, if I'm not liking my result, then send the original to a friend to see how they edit it. They will send their XMP back to me, and that way it's easy to compare and make small adjustments without having to work off a jpeg. XMP support would be the one huge thing that might be a dealbreaker.
Some thing I miss in Lightroom are before/after view mode, the ability to see my history and take snapshots (and easily revert to the original), and the ability to see what channels were clipping in my histogram.
The last question is speed. Most of the articles I've read have pointed out speed as a big jump of Aperture over LR. While I've definitely had my share of slow LR, Aperture doesn't seem to be significantly faster, if it is at all. I'm working on a MBP with 4GB of RAM and 40 free GBs on a 160GB HD...any ideas?
    All feedback is much appreciated!

I had sidecar XMP files with my Lightroom masters. Everything worked perfectly when I imported my images into Aperture 3. I would like to use both applications as I really love the map in Aperture 3, but I cannot embed the geotag information into the image, and if I want this information to be read by both applications, I use Geotagger, or Geophoto which can embed the image into the file, and that will be read by both Lightroom and Aperture immediately.
I was really pleased when I found that Aperture 3 read all the other metadata correctly!

  • Monitor question and more

    Hi all,
I recently connected my iBook to a projector. Number one, I had to restart my computer to get the connection to work. Is this normal? Sometimes I plug in and it starts right up and other times I have to restart it. Is this a sign of a bigger problem? Two, after it was up and running a different picture showed up on the screen than what I had previously put. Not a big deal, but I was just wondering.
Thanks for any help that can be given. I'm a new user and really enjoying my mac.
    God Bless
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There are not hard and fast rules that I'm aware of as to whether Mac OS X will correctly detect a display attached after the system is booted - sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
Restarting is one option, but so is using System Preferences -> Displays and clicking the 'Detect displays' button.
As for the separate images that sounds like a difference between display mirroring and an extended desktop. When mirroring the display, the same image is shown on both screens. When extending the desktop the external monitor becomes an extension of your primary monitor such that moving the mouse off the edge of one screen makes it appear on the opposite edge of the other, just as if they were attached. The displays preferences lets you define the relative position of each screen.
As for the user accounts, that's perfectly normal. For security's sake most of the background services on the machine run as an unprivileged user - that way if they're compromised in any way there is a limited amount of access a hacker can get. To do this each process uses a different username. 'jabber' is the username for the iChat server, and 'nobody' is a generic unprivileged username. All the accounts (as well as many other parameters of your system configuration) are stored in a database managed by NetInfo, hence the name of NetInfo Manager, an application that lets you view and manipulate the data in your system database.

  • Ps3 format question, and more..thanks

hi guys, i transferred a hd movie from my sony camera to my ps3 it plays great, when i copyed the movie from my ps3 to a external hdd, to edit with imov09, it wont play. the file is there, any ideas>
also i took a clip of it and converted it to mp4, and another to quick time, they played ok, however when i dragged across to edit in movie 09 ,it wont allow them in to be edited ?
where am i going wrong? any help would be great.
    thank you.

Here are ones that appleman posted -- they will work for imovie9 just use export quicktime movie
I did some experimentation based on a post by Dan Hawkins in the "Pro" forums. I experimented with his settings using the Quicktime Export option in iMovie 08 and they worked. His post is below.
    ============================================================
    from Dan Hawkins:
I am using a PS3 to preview HD video edited in FCE-3.5.1HD with the following QT-PRO export settings:
    1) export from FCE using Quicktime conversion
    2) select format MPEG-4
    3) select options:
    a) under file format select MP4 (not MP4 ISMA)
    b) under video tab select H.264
data rate in the range of about 10000 to 18000 kbits/sec depending on what filesize/quality you are shooting for
    image size---select 1280X720HD or 1920X1080HD
frame rate---select 29.97 or "current" if already on a editing timeline of that type
key frame---select either automatic or every 24 frames
video options---select "MAIN" profile and single pass encoding (when I use "MULTI-PASS" encoding I get a "FILE UNREADABLE" error message on my PS3)
    c) under audio tab select default AAC-LC
    d) under streaming tab select default "not enabled"
I transfer the resulting high definition .MP4 file to the PS3 by one of the following methods:
    ethernet network connection
    iPod/thumb drive
    SD-card
I have to hit the "alternate menu" under the PS3 video section and select "display all files" to see the video file and then save it to the local PS3 HDD (some dumb programming there!).
I have heard there might be an upper limit of 4Gb on the file size (if so, another dumb move), but have not come across that limitation yet (I just got the PS3 about a week ago and am working through some of the same issues you seem to be struggling with).
I think that some of the confusion regarding the PS3 relative to playing back HD from regular DVD-R is that the PS3 will hardware decode a properly encoded .MP4 HD video file from whatever media it is presented on and as such does not require a HD "authoring" container with menus and such. These so called "HD authoring tools" are currently in a pretty confused state at the moment and are the source of much incompatibility with many HD playback devices, but the PS3 bypasses all of that and plays the file directly through hardware decoding.

  • Looking to Buy; Several Questions

    1. I am ripping my entire DVD collection to several hds (over 1,000 dvd). They show
up in folder: VIDEO_TS. They play fine with Apple DVD player.
Will Apple TV Play this files? My family is using the WD TV live media hub and it works fine.
I really want to us Apple TV. Will this work.
    Thanks for any help.

I'll answer anyway; the Apple TV cannot play those files, since they're MPEG-2 which the Apple TV cannot support. And if these are commercial and hence copy-protected DVDs, we can't discuss any solutions here since breaking the encryption on the DVD is illegal in the US due to the idiotic provisions in the DMCA.
    Regards.

  • Iam looking at buying a macbook

I am looking into buying a macbook and I need some help. It will be my first Apple. I am very excited but am also a single mom and watching my dollars. I was thinking about getting one on Ebay that is new in box. If I do this can I still buy the ProCare and the One to One service? Is the warranty still available to add on? I am trying to make a smart purchase but also be very cost effective. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have bought my last 3 Macs off of eBay... and you are right, it is much cheaper!
One thing i would advise is to make sure the Paypal protection care is at the $2,000.00 level and not just $200.00! If you get scammed, Paypal will only refund $200.00 if the coverage is $200.00. If the seller you are dealing with is only covered up to $200.00, then i would be very CAREFUL!!!
Buying off ebay does not prevent you from purchasing the Apple extended warranty... and if you look around you will be able to get one for around $175.00. (i bought my first Applecare for $165.00 and the second one for $145.00 but i think i really lucked out both times!)
Apple's One to One service should not be affected by where and how you purchased your laptop, so enjoy your new Macbook and welcome to our side... Oh, get a keyboard protector cos' you never know when an accident might occur and you don't want anything happen to your new MacBook! :o)
