Lost Boot Camp partition after upgrading to OS X Mavericks
History:
I had Windows 8 installed on Boot Camp. For some reason I had to enable Bit Locker in Windows that required me to create a partition using Windows Disk Utility. The Windows Disk Utility created the partition but then there was mismatch between GPT and MBR Records.
The system was working as expected.
What Happened:
I decided to upgrade my OS X to the latest version Mavericks 10.9, that owerwritten the MBR Records and updated GPT I guess.
The Windows BootCamp partition disappeared. Only OS I could use is Mac OS X.
Current Situation:
I have been trying many tools so might have further spoiled the situation.
Out put from some of the utilities

Lost Boot Camp partition after failure repatitioning
I was trying to install Windows via Boot Camp, it was failure then I decided to revert changes and repartition the volume (using Boot Camp Assistant), unfortunately it was failure too, I did a hard reset. Now that partition (20 GB) is lost, even in Disk Utility. when I open Boot Camp Assitant there is no "remove boot camp" option.

how do you enlarge boot camp partition after windows is installed
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can do it with third-party programs, but I don't recommend it because you can damage the hard drive. The best way to do it is to delete your Windows volume and create it again with the size you need -

Will Boot Camp function after upgrade to Mavericks?
Planning on upgrading from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks.
I now have Windows XP on my Boot Camp partition. I also use an old version (2.0.8) of VMware Fusion to access the same BootCamp WinXP. I rarely use Windows & I know my old version of VMware will not work. Would need to purchase a new version (6.x) for ~ $60.00.
But, I’m hoping I could still Option Boot into my BootCamp Windows.
Am I correct? Or after upgrading to Mavericks, will I be unable to boot into Windows w/o a bunch of fixes & troubleshooting?
Regards,
SteveThanks!
Fingers crossed.
As soon as I purchase iBank I will do the upgrade. Will make a bootable clone just b4 I do the upgrade.
Will run Repair Permissions as well.
Probably late tonight or Monday. -
Removing Boot Camp Partition after now using Parallels
Is it possible to completely remove the boot camp partition (under Snow Leopard) without having to reformat the HD and reinstall everything? I don't need it now that I am using Parallels with an XP virtual machine installed on my OSX partition.
utahmac1 wrote:
I ran the assistant and did the restore. Now when my computer turns on I have to hold the option key to get to the mac log in. There isn't the windows boot up option any more. However it wont just boot up to Mac. Any ideas?
Once in OS X go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and set OSX to be the default.
On the next reboot ist should automatically boot into OSX.

Parallel runs slow on Boot Camp partition and other questions...
Hi all,
I have had my MBP santa rosa for about 3 weeks. I love it. Everything is super fast and responsive on this thingy. I have parallel running on Boot Camp partition and it is slow. I mean its not awfully slow but when I click start (the play button of Parallel), I see the spinning beachball for 0.5 to 1 min. When I get to Windows XP or Vista (I tried both of them), there is no way parallel could perform up to "near native" speed, I get a lot of sand-clock and it takes 1 mins or so to boot up MS SQL server 2005. When i tried to open lots of windows at once, it freezes for a while then all the windows pop up. I dedicated 1gb of ram for parallel. I am thinking of removing boot camp and use parallel virtual drive on which to install windows. Would that make the performance any better?
I have another question. I bought Disk Warrior 4 but my lovely cousin broke the disc into half coz he thought it was a cheap toy. Is there anyway I can make another bootable CD for disk warrior? I know BootCD only works on Panther. Can I use SuperDuper to clone my MBP and put the image file on a PC-formated external hard drive to bootup from there to run Disk Warrior?
Thank you so much for your help. I gotta say this MBP is the best laptop I have ever used in my entire life. VEry happy with the purchase so far. Thank you Apple.
MacNo0b
p/s: Any recommendation on how to keep the Mac running well without slowing down? CheersI have to say, I have never used Parallels in a system with 2GB. I don't feel that it's worth it given Boot Camp is available. That said, if you run nothing else it should run quite happily.
If you're having problems getting through the installation try setting it up with a virtual environment that has no drive. That way you should be able to get through the installation/setup and then you can add your Boot Camp partition after that.
As for transferring files, I will either use Parallels folder sharing else a 1GB DOS formatted USB flash drive.
PS You're right, I certainly can't complain about the equipment I get to play with. I've had to fork out quite a bit of money for the privilege but it's all been worth it. -
All files on Boot Camp partition mysteriously erased after 10.5.3 update
My wife's MBP 2.4 was running 10.5.2 with a Boot Camp installation of Windows XP. The other night she upgraded to 10.5.3 and everything on her Boot Camp partition was erased somehow.
She spent most of the day working in Windows. During the day someone gave her a usb key with some photos on it that when she plugged it in to her computer something came up in Turkish (she is presently in Turkey) that her friend said she should just close the window and she did. She shut down and switched over to the 10.5.2 install, repaired permissions, and then ran software update to go to 10.5.3. I believe her Boot Camp is updated to the most recent version on the PC side. After the update completed she went to go back into Windows and could not start up in it. It turned out somehow everything on the Boot Camp partition was gone. The partition name was the same as it had been previously and it shouls as all of the space available. None of the material was in the Trash on the Mac side and she had quite a build up in the Trash folder - so it wasn't put in the Trash and then the Trash emptied. It was as if someone had reformatted the partition.
I would chalk this up to user error when she was in disk utility maybe or someone in her studio screwing around with her computer but the same thing apparently happened to one of her classmates shortly before leaving for Turkey. Anyone heard of this happening or have any thoughts?
I had her saving all data to the Mac partition so luckily no data was lost - we just need to reinstall the programs to the Windows partition.
Thanks!Nope, that didn't happen. The mbp has been loaded directly with Leopard since release day, and had few problems. I've done all the updates from 10.5.0 without any issues. But it was definitely something in the 10.5.3 update that hosed my video (or just a really, really strange coincidence and/or bad timing).
It's not just an OS driver, either. This is lower level than that, because I get NO video from a complete startup. There's no grey screen with the apple logo-- it stays completely blank. This almost surely means that the low-level firmware got corrupted or flashed incorrectly. The fact that the OS detects it as something completely different (Intel GMA X3100) supports this idea.
Thinking back, I did do the update with my laptop screen closed and using a 20" Apple Cinema Display, which is how I use the laptop 90% of the time. And in each of the previous updates, I'm certain they were installed similarly. I mention this, because someone else mentioned having the same issue as me, and noted that the update was done with an external display. Perhaps the firmware update is bugged so that if it doesn't detect the native display, it gets hosed...
I saw some other suggestions in another thread that sounded interesting. For instance, you can create a self booting CD on another Mac that reflashes the EFI (low level bios) to a factory setting. This could potentially fix it, and I would be willing to try it, if I still had my laptop.
In the future, just because things like this make me paranoid, I'll probably reboot the mbp and use only the native display before I do any updates...

Boot Camp broken after Yosemite Upgrade
Hi.
After upgrading my 2012 rMBP to Yosemite, my boot camp with Windows 7 stopped working. Specifically:
- I could not see the Windows partition when holding down the alt/option key at startup
- I could not see an option to startup with Windows in the boot camp assistant
- I could not see the boot camp partition in disk utility: all I could see was a partition "disk0s4"
- there appeared to be some unallocated space in disk utility between the Macintosh HD and disk0s4 partitions.
After searching the Apple Support forum I followed the advice posted by Loner T. In summary I confirm the following actions solved my problem:
- running Test Disk, and confirmed that in my case I had not lost data, and that the "MS data" partitions were still there albeit they were marked as "deleted". I used the "Analyse" option to list candidate partitions, and then the "p" option to list the files in the candidate partitions. In my case there was only one candidate "MS data" deleted partition where I could successfully list the files which I could recognise as being from my Windows file system.
- from Test Disk, writing down the start and end sectors of my Windows partition
- running Gdisk, and following the instructions posted by Loner T to
1) replace the bad partition information, which required my start and end sectors I had written down from Test Disk, and (following reboot)
2) replace the MBR information which set my boot camp partition as bootable.
I'm not overly tech savvy myself but was able to follow the instructions posted. I can't offer any further advice myself other than to say it worked for my problem and that I recommend reading the posts from Loner T to diagnose your problem and hopefully fix it.

Boot Camp partition not bootable after update
Hi All, hi Loner T!
After an OSX update I lost my Boot Camp partition. Reading you replies here on the forum, i was able to save my important files through testdisk, for what i'm really thankful! Following your instructions in this thread (Bootcamp disk0s4 gone after Yosemite update) the bootcamp partition finally appeared in finder and disk utility.
But sudo gdisk /dev/disk0 returns with this:
Kovacs-Peter-Attilas-MacBook-Pro:~ kovacspeterattila$ Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
Password:
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.0
Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their
partition table automatically reloaded!
Partition table scan:
MBR: protective
BSD: not present
APM: not present
GPT: present
Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.
Command (? for help):
So if it is able i would avoid reinstalling windows, and all the applications with your help. I saw many people asking you about this case, so i hope you may can help me as well.
Thank you!Hi LonerT, I too have lost the ability to boot into windows/bootcamp - only Mac & recovery are displayed at startup.
Below are my results for the same set of instructions.
What does it indicate?

Boot Camp Partition Missing after shrinking Mac Partition
Hello Chris I have a OSX 10.9.2 running all upgrades, Powerbook 2.3g i7 16 GB , Had a boot camp partition of 49 GB, running windows 7 all working fine.
Decided to bump the windows 7 to 100 GB. Used disk utility to decrease the mac partition to 401.6
Image of the way it is now.
The Gray part is what is from the apply done the original time.
After I hit apply. I then restarted and tried to enter boot camp by holding down the altOption key as usual but only the OSX and the Recover partition where there No Windows.
NOTE: did the Windows 7 partition increase from 29 to the 49 GB before this same way and everything worked fine for over a month till i decided to double the partition to 100GB.
In the preferences the Mac Hd only shows up, no network or windows.
Network does show up when holding down altOption Key
Saw that you might be the best help I would like to talk to you and get your Genus going

What to do Next ?Chris I just did what Loner T said
sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
setpid 4
07
flag 4
write
I then restart and now I can see the windows partition after on restart and altOption down.
But it then gives a error can't find drive or something like that.
