Lost color profile

When I use autofix in Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0, photos that previously had an embedded color profile (Adobe RGB) lose the color profile - when I open the edited version of the photo in Photoshop 6.0, I am told that there is no embedded color profile (the original is recognized as having Adobe RGB in Photoshop). Is there any way to retain the profile after using Autofix and, if not, should I re-assign Adobe RGB in Photoshop or should I assign sRGB and then convert to Adobe RGB working space? (The latter seems to yield better results).

I tried autofixing an image shot with Canon PowerShot camera with embeded sRGB profile in Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0, it did not discarded the embeded color profile (I checked in Photoshop CS)
If you are getting better results with the second option then you should go ahead with it.

Hello, Everyone. I have a question that I have struggled to crack on my own to no avail. I hope someone here can help.
I am trying to publish some images to the web using color corrected monitors, RAW format, and a color checker passport to create a perfeect color profile. Here are the technical details and my workflow.
Camera: Canon Rebel EOS Xsi
Format: RAW + L
Color Space: sRGB
Color Checker: X-Rite ColorChecker Passport
Monitor Calibrator: Spyder4 Pro, fully updated software
Computer: Lenovo T420 ThinkPad

After importing the image into Photoshop, I make sure the RAW space is set to sRGB IEC6 1966-2.1
Use the eyedropper to select a neutral color one step away from pure white on the RAW image of the color checker, create and set the custom white balance.

Export the image as a DNG
Load the DNG into the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport software to create a color profile
Back to Photoshop
Open the RAW file
Set the white balance to the custom profile created above
Set the color profile created with X-Rite
Open the color-corrected image in Photoshop (see color setting above)
Save as JPEG
Publish
First, everything seems to go great throughout this entire process, until I see the image on the Web: LINK. Once published, the image has a very noticible golden-yellow tint to it. The color-corrected image looks great on both color-calibrated monitors, in RAW and JPEG. Absolutely perfect. After noticing the ugly yellow tint in the image I posted to the Web, however, I became aware of a couple more weird things.
1) When the JPEG was open in Photoshop and I moved the window that contained the image around on my second monitor, the image immediately took on that golden-yellow tint: you can see a screen shot of the color corrected image on my Samsung (bottom) and the yellow version of the same image created when I drag the window around on the Samsung (top) HERE.
2) When opening the X-Rite software, I got a warning saying that the laptop monitor had been calibrated, but that the Samsung had not. I got this error even if I calibrated the Samsung monitor right before using X-Rite. Also, the monitor is definitely calibrated, because the images look great, and the colors match what I see on the laptop.
3) Recently, I noticed that when waking my computer from sleep, the Samsung monitor no longer holds its Datacolor (Spyder4) calibration.
I thought the problem I was having might be due to the monitor, for the reasons stated above. However, I later noticed that when I open the color-corrected JPEG with the default Windows image viewer, it retains the color correction settings. The image looks fantastic, and doesn't lose it's color profile when I drag the window around. Also, there seems to be less color loss in the Word documents and PDFs I included this image in: LINK.
I checked this with several more images, and the results are the exact same. I scoured the Web as best I could, but my problem seems to be pretty unique. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

Thank you, twenty_one, for taking the time to read my post and put up a reply. I am going to rebuild my question and post it again here. But first, to answer some of your points:
1. A raw file has no color space, until it's opened into one in the raw converter. So this is controlled in ACR, not the camera.
I just wanted to be as thorough as possible. One of the steps I took was to set the Color Space setting in my camera to sRGB:
2. White balance has no bearing whatsoever on camera profiles. A profile is not for white balancing, it's to account for the spectral distribution of the light, which is something else. You make the profile and assign it in ACR, then you white balance for processing.

3. If you get a message about monitor calibration upon opening the camera calibration software, something is seriously confused. The two have nothing to do with each other. No relation whatsoever.

4. A corrupted monitor profile will only show up in Photoshop and other color managed software. Other applications that are not color managed will not use the profile and are not affected. So find out which apps are and which aren't before drawing any conclusions.

I'm new to this forum, so this is helpful to know. This image shows the color-corrected image (bottom) on my Samsung. It looks exactly the same in the same window on my laptop monitor. When I move that window around on my Samsung screen, it turns gold (top). The image, when posted to the web, looks *similar* to that gold color.
So let's say I only use Photoshop on my laptop, which is not displaying any colors. Do you think the golden hue problem will go away?

Color profiles for I photo books

Is there a desired color profile to use for printing books with i photo
My images are currently adobe-rgb. jpegs brought in from CS
When I print the images thru CS they look great.
When i print them thru I photo book or the PDF they look very dark and muddy...and would assume the same of the book printing online.
any ideas on how to get the best print.
Is there a color profile availabe from the online book printers or are we just winging it
Also tried converting one page to S-RGB Still Muddy / dark thru i photo book
and PDF Print. And just fine thru CS

Confused as to what that means??? Does that mean that all my CS Adobe-RGB jpegs will keep their color profile???
Also implanted one image as an SRGB vs the rest which will all be AdobeRGB
Oddly my color management in CS is almost Flawless. Yet, get me out of CS and I am completely lost!!!! Complicated stuff
Toad, I did want to pass on that AdobeRGB 1998 is a much more robust color profile then SRGB especially when it come to printing on Epson. It might be worth experimenting with and if you really want to get into it there is also
Pro photo RGB which is Huge color space, but a beast to work with

Choosing Color Profiles for Images Created on Film

I just finished sending feedback to Adobe on one of its tutorials. The following is a copy of my message explaining my present predicament.
<< I have scanned film negatives and positive film transparencies dating back to the 1950's .I was the creator of most of these images but I do not remember the make or model of the cameras I was using at any point in time prior to 1974 and they all lack metadata. Prior to 2000 I used iPhoto and PS Elements for scanning, toning and development. Thus I can only guess what color profile I should use. I want to create TIFFS that will serve a dual purpose: exporting two formats, one for electronic sharing and the other for printing. On the Adobe CC, if I guess wrong, LR 5.6 64bit crashes immediately. Prior stand alone versions of LR and CS6 let you know that you had a color inconsistency, but they did not crash when you had made a wrong choice between srgb and ProPhoto. ACC gives me more options, but no warnings unless I am missing something your Help Files should contain.>>

Disappearing color profile when saved for the Web

Hello.
I have a problem with the “Save for the Web” results using Photoshop CS6 running on Win 7 x64.
My photos are already in 8 bits and in sRGB and when I save for the Web I check the option “embed color profile”, uncheck “convert to sRGB”, metadata to “copyright and contact info”.
When I open the resulting photos in Photoshop, everything is fine as it recognizes the embedded color profile. Same thing when I open these files in Firefox, Safari or Chrome: the colors are correct.
Now, when I right-click on a file in the Win Explorer and look its properties, the line about the color profile is blank, as if there wasn't any. This doesn't bother me but the problem appears on my Website created with Joomla and using for the display a module, Responsive Image Gallery, which creates resized copies of the photos. At this point the copies have completely lost their color profile. I entered in contact with the module's support and they assured me that it preserves the embedded profile, so I come here to gather some information about how this “Save for the Web” embeds the color profile because may be I just didn't understand how it does and if it's different from the “Save as” way.
The fact I can't see the profile through the Win Explorer makes me think Joomla's module doesn't either.

Incredible how much gballard's site is famous! Lol. I use it for a while now and checked again right now with the three Web browsers and everything is all right.
As indicated in my first post, when saving for the Web I checked the “embed color profile” option. I already resized the file and converted it in sRGB first in Photoshop.
Yes it's pretty confusing to see some software not able to see the color profile when the file is saved with that option.
To illustrate, here are three screenshots from Windows' file browser => right-ckick on the file => properties => details:
Opening that “saved for the Web” file in PS, it's ok, the CP is recognized.
Opening it directly (from the file browser => “open with”) in Web browsers: ok in Firefox, Safari and Chrome (CP recognized in all).
Copying that file in my working site on localhost (no modification), integer it in Joomla's module gallery (which is CP aware) and then opening my site on localhost with Web browsers: ok in Firefox (because it considers a non-tagged file by default as beeing sRGB), NOT OK in Safari neither in Chrome.
Now, if I do the same with the “Save as” version of the file with embedded sRGB CP:
PS: ok
Opened directly in Web browsers: ok in the three cases
Opened in Web browsers through my Joomla site on localhost: OK IN ALL THREE BROWSERS

Snow Leopard default color profile

I seem to have lost the original color profile file while trying to calibrate my screen... How can I get it back? Can I download it somewhere?

In System Preferences > Displays > Color Tab the profile would probably be "MacBook Pro".
In /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays do you see it?
If not take the other color profiles, in case you need them, and copy them somewhere else then delete them.
Then run The 10.6.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
That should create the default.
Or... you may just be able to delete the entire folder and restart. But I wouldn't this without a good backup.

Color profile

Hi!
I have an issue with the color profiles. I have to print my project on two different plotters, one is laser and the other is plotter for bigger formats. My LCD screen is useless so I will print a color palette on both printers and pick the color from the printed palette. My PDF's are done in Illustrator in CMYK mode and than imported in Indesign . Half of the project will be printed from Illustrator's PDF and half from the Indesign. I'm afraid that this will produce two different results because I'm lost on the color profile. Should I assign a profile or use the "don't color manage..." option. I guess I should use the same color profile in Illustrator and Indesign?

Preserving ICC Color Profile in image conversion.

I'm quite lost on how to preserve a color profile using the JAI tools. I'm hoping somebody can help.
Basically, I have a TIF, which I read the image and it's metadata, and can dump everything out showing the non-standard embedded color profile. Then I want to save the image as a jpg with the same color profile information embedded, but it doesn't seem to be automatic, and I can't find the proper API.
I'm actually shooting for JPeg2000, but I'm using standard JPG for now, so that I can easily open the resulting image up in photoshop to see the embedded color profile.
My read code is something like this:

It worked fine before but than one day (don't remember for sure when) it started not working. I think I probably updated my Photoshop at the same time so something may have changed there.

Monitor/Photoshop/Color profile issue

heyz! yesterday i changed my monitor profile from srgb to prophoto rgb while viewing some images in photoshop. they displayed the same colors after the change, but today i opened photoshop again and with the same images and all the colors were dissaturated. ive done some search and found the probable cause is a ”broken” monitor profile, or one that doesnt match its capabilities. i changed to adobe rgb, reopened photoshop and that image seems to look right, but i think still not how i remember it from yesterday. my question is: is this really the problem and is there a way i can find whats the largest color space my monitor can display without reading its tech book?( cos its long lost)

ps: when changing the monitor profile to prophoto i also played with color settings in ps and set it to prophoto/adobe rgb, but that image has an embedded profile and i chose preserve embedded profile when opening it, so i dont think thats the problem.

If there's a question here it's pretty vague. So, here's how it works, in general terms:
A monitor profile is a description of the monitor's native color space. And as such it also defines the gamut of your monitor. But the profile doesn't actually "handle" anything, it doesn't do anything - it's just a description.
Photoshop's color management system is where things are handled. Here, the document color profile is converted, on the fly, into the monitor profile, and these modified RGB values are sent to the monitor. That's all there is to it - a straight and perfectly normal profile conversion. RGB values are remapped to produce the same color.
Any profile can be converted into any other. But any colors in the source color space that would fall outside the target color space, are just clipped to the gamut limit, and they're effectively gone forever. If you have a ProPhoto file displayed on a standard monitor, it's reasonable to assume that a lot of gamut clipping has occurred before it hits the screen, because the monitor color space is a lot smaller.
A standard traditional monitor has a native color space that is very close to sRGB. That's why you can use sRGB as display profile, although of course a calibrator will make one that is much more accurate. This is also why sRGB is the standard for web, because it will display roughly right even without any color management.
Some monitors have a larger color space, and are close to Adobe RGB. These are relatively expensive and are known as wide gamut. If you have such a monitor, it can only be used with full end-to-end color management. In the absence of color management, sRGB material will not display correctly on these monitors, but considerably oversaturated. This is the implication you have to accept when you buy a wide gamut monitor.

Ordering Prints Online with Embedded Color Profiles

Problem: I have imported about 100 photos into iPhoto (7.1.1) that have embedded ProPhoto RGB profiles. When Ordering Prints (from Apple/Kodak) online, the prints delivered were horribly desaturated. After research, discovered that the ProPhoto RGB (which is really high-end professional color space, even bigger than Adobe RGB) is not compatible with sRGB printing services. Essentially, sRGB is a much smaller color space and color is lost in process. What's the best way to resolve this?

There's an AppleScript to embed the color profile of your choice in selected files. I've modified it to embed the sRGB profile it's available at Toad's Cellar. It's the Applescript version, not the automator version. The automator version adds some jpeg compression in it's process. The script method does not.
Or, you could use Photoshop and create an action to batch convert the files to the sRGB profile. I've used PS but not the batch process. GraphicConverter may be be able to convert them but I've not used it.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Weird color profile problem after SMC update

Although I've managed to resolve this particular problem, I wonder if anyone has suffered the same thing.
Software update says that I should do the firmware update, so I did that yesterday night. Also, at the same time, I went and removed MS Office 2004 Test Drive (it was taking up space for no good reason). Sometime after doing those things, it seems like OSX had lost the display color profile. The only ones I've got was the Adobe one, Generic RGB and sRGB. The generic RGB washes the screen with a blue tone, and clicking on Calibration would merely have the ColorSync utility complain about the profile isn't there.
Looking at the knowledge base, it says that after the 10.4.8 upgrade, the screen may look bluer than before. The curious thing was that my Macbook reported it running on 10.4.8 when I first got it. But anyways I downloaded 10.4.7's LCD profile, and put it at the location specified in that knowledge base. Display preference still didn't pick up on the profile, so I end up restarting the machine, and now it seems to be using a profile called "Color LCD".
I'm wondering if anyone else have experienced something like this, and going to document this here as a possible solution if someone is lost after a random deletion of a color profile....
Macbook 13" Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had something similar happen when I upgraded to 10.4.8. In fixing the blue tint problem, I loaded a backup copy of the Color LCD profile. Subsequently, under exact circumstances I don't remember, the machine "lost" the profile. And the calibration option would just give an error.
So somehow, after further fiddling, I ended up with two copies of Color LCD profile, one the old 10.4.7 one, one the 10.4.8 one. I haven't had the problem of it losing the profile again.
But I might mention that there is a related problem which you may encounter. If I use fast user switching with another account and return to my (admin) account, the blue tint returns. The workaround is as described in this article:

Firefox lost my profile. My husband's profile seems to have overridden my own even on my Windows login.

Firefox 3.6.3 lost my profile. My husband's profile has overridden mine even on my Windows login. I cannot even log in to sites on my Windows profile because the cookies are gone and the sites refuse to recognize me. I am running Windows Vista.Please help.

Do the two of you share a vista account? If not, then it should still work if you log in to your account. Firefox keeps profiles separate per windows account.
If the two of you ''do'' share a Vista account, then go to '''Help > Troubleshooting Information''', and click on '''Open Containing Folder'''. That should open the current profile folder in windows explorer. Move one folder up to see if there are other profile folders in existence. See [[Managing Profiles]]

How to get a color profile stored in a user library from within Photoshop CS5

Hi!
I have a specific color profile that I want to load int PS CS5 color settings. I've placed it into my user library/application support/adobe/color/settings folder and all was good. Now i'm in PS and can't find the user library to load the settings. (Interestingly enough, I have no problem getting into the system library. Go figure) Any ideas?

Apple has hidden ~/Library starting with Lion. You can put Adobe Color Settings files, *.csf, into /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Settings instead of the user folder; and ICC profiles belong in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles.
Or you can unhide ~/Library with this command in Terminal:
sudo chflags nohidden ~/Library/

CS4 Some components wont install ..re. color profiles

when installing CS4 on Windows 7 PC, got error message, some components of Illustrator, photoshop, etc. could not be installed. Ran Adobe Advisor, Problem id.color profiles and permissions. followed instrucitons from adobe help re. editing registry, deleting color profiles, and reinstalling (also disabled AntiVirus and Firewall)....same result 4 times.??

HT1386 I lost my profile on my PC and I copied everything over to a new profile. I installed Itunes and copied over all my music files and now it says that sync's but it is not getting a new download. what do I do?

Do this. If all the synced media like apps and music are alread in the the iTnunes library just backup the iPod and restore from that backup
