Lost connection detection time difference

Having a problem understanding why a broken JDBC connection is detected under Windows much quicker than it is under Linux.
I have an process that opens a connection to MSSQL using JDBC, a Stored Procedure is then executed and the result set
processed, this execute step is repeated every 60 seconds or so. If any exception is thrown then resources are closed, sleep
for 60 seconds, the connection is reopened (if fails then sleeps and repeats), once reopened the process continues. There is logging throughout
the above steps.
On Windows Vista 64bit Sun Java platform the process runs fine, if I deliberately break the connection (stop MSSQL service), the process
logs a problems within 60 seconds and starts handling the error, when the MSSQL comes back then within 60 seonds the connection is remade
and the process continues as expected.
Under Ubuntu 10 64bit both Sun and OpenJDK the process runs fine, until the connectionis broken, as it takes about 17 minutes for the exception to be thrown
for the broken connection (stopped MSSQL) to be detected, as opposed to under Windows taking seconds. Once detected then the process works as expected, retrying
and reconnecting as it should.
The libs and code used are the same the only difference between the windows and linux versions are the logging path parameter, have tried with different versions of Java
and with different MSSQL JDBC drivers.
What could be the reason for the time difference in the lost connection detection between Windows and Linux? Any help tips would be most welcome.
Thanks.

The connection is only made once and used throughout, it is only closed if there is a problem. This runs absolutely fine with logging for weeks, the execute and processing take millisecondsIt is pointless to keep the connection in that situation. Create it every time.
Doing that might even fix your problem. But regardless you should still not keep it.
Have jujst checked the timings and if the db connection is broken the on Linux (Ubuntu) the exception generated by step 4. takes up to 15 minutes 35 seconds to move on to step 7. on Windows though it is instant, there is a log message output prior to the execute statement this outputs then the exeception logged. You have an existing connection.
Then you attempt a request which I am guess takes 17 minutes to timeout. (That happens because you are testing by stopping the server.)
That is the problem.
First verify the connection url. It might have timeout values in it.
If not then the next most likely cause is that someone changed the OS (not java) TCP timeout values. Bad idea if they did. And the only way to fix is to change them back to something reasonable. You can code around this by using two threads. One that sets a timer and the other that runs the request. If the timer fires then attempt to cancel the request (see the jdbc api.)

  • Lost connection to Time Capsule & flashing amber-green-amber

I was happily watching movies from my TC via my MacBook & then I lost the connection. I switched on and off several times, but to no avail. I've read through the various Q&As and see a common reply is to connect via an ethernet cable & go into 'manual' in Airport Utility. I tried, but Airport Utility no longer recognises my TC and invites me to 'forget' it. Should I forget it? I've a lot of data on it I don't want to lose.
Other replies suggest that my TC may be trying to tell me it needs a firmware update. But without a connection, how can I do this?
In Airport Utility (v6.0) there is the File>Configure other function. Should I do this?
My TC is bridged - its not my router; just an external drive wired to my router, and which I connect to wirelessly with just the one laptop.
    Thanks in anticipation...

Lion handles thngs differently .. sorry I am avoiding Lion as I think its networking is poor. And I do more networking than anything that requires Lion OS for.
Bob has posted recently.. he has upgraded to Lion to help people find their TC..
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4016117?tstart=0
Check his post with pics.. some changes are for the better .. some are indifferent some are definitely worse.
Fiddling though achieves so little... !!
One thing you should do though is reboot the TC.. TC and Lion do not like each other much.. no official separation but the relationship is strained.
Every now and then Lion boots the TC out of the house.. but it crawls back when Lion goes it sleep and it promises to reform itself.
A full network reboot in the right order.. shut down everything.. restart the modem.. router.. TC (same thing or secondary to main router) switch if present, then clients. A couple of minutes between them.. Don't just sleep stuff.. it has to reboot..
    Why is Lion like windows..?
The first support question is the same, "Did you turn it off and on again??"

  • MacBook Lost Connection With Time Capsule, Unable to reconnect

On my first attempt installing time capsule and setting up airport was ok. Then one day, I completely lost the connection. Now my MAcBook can not find time capsule or airport.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Resetting the Arris modem and the time capsule.
    2. Unplugging and disconnecting everything, re-install the Time Capsule Set up disk.
    3. Updated software on mac website.
Still., the light continues to blink amber, when I have my computer scan it doesn't find anything. It will not allow me to choose manual setup. This is very frustrating. Please help. I'm about to return it. I'm wasting a lot of time on something that should work.

Here is the setup I use to configure my Time Capsule. Haven't had a problem with it since day one - even through multiple reconfigures for testing purposes.
*_How Do I Setup Up My Time Capsule As My Only Router?_*
Naturally, the possible combinations of modems / routers / Airport Devices / etc. cannot be accounted for in one set of instructions. However, if you are using your Time Capsule as your only router, and not attempting to add it to an existing network then the following instructions should be helpful:
    *Verify Cabling*
Phone line --> phone jack on your ISPs modem.
Next, attach an ethernet cable between your ISPs modem --> and the WAN port on the Time Capsule (that’s the little round ‘wheel’ symbol), NOT to one of the LAN ports <•••>.
There should be no other devices between your ISPs’ modem and the Time Capsule.
    *Reset Time Capsule*
First, if previous attempts to configure the Airport device have failed, it’s a good idea to reset it following steps outlined in this KB article:
Make sure you hold in the reset switch for a good 10 seconds, then release.
*Reboot ISPs’ Modem & Time Capsule*
Make sure that any time you disconnect and reattach the TC (or any wireless router) to your ISPs modem, that you cycle the modem's power off and on. Sometimes it doesn't forward the IP address assigned by your ISP unless it is rebooted.
If you are using the Time Capsule as your only router then power down your ISPs modem.
Unplug the TC from the wall outlet.
    Wait 10-15 seconds.
Next turn your modem back on first. Let it initialize and acquire an IP address (about 30-60 seconds).
Plug in the TC back in again.
After it has restarted (30-60 seconds), the amber light will slowly flash.
    *Configure Airport Utility*
    Next, launch Airport Utility.
Highlight the device on the left and click “Continue”.
You may be asked if you want to “Reset” or “Restore” one of the configuration profiles. Select “Reset”, and click “OK”.
Name your Time Capsule. Keep it short and simple. Use only letters & number, no special characters.
Enter the password twice and check “Remember this password in my keychain”. Avoid using a “different password to secure disks” for now.
    Click “Continue”.
Airport Utility may “discover existing wireless networks”. If the Time Capsule is your only router, then choose “I don’t have a wireless network…”, and click “Continue”.
Name the new network. Keep it short and simple. Use only letters & number, no special characters.
Enter a password for your new network twice, check “Remember this password in my keychain”, and click “Continue”.
Select “Share a single IP address…” and click “Continue”.
If you are presented with a dialogue box warning you of a blinking amber light, click “Ignore”.
At “Select how you connect to the internet” choose the type of service. (Most will choose “I use a DSL or cable modem with a static IP address or DHCP”.)
    Click “Continue”.
For “Configure IPv4” choose “Using DHCP”.
Enter the DNS server numbers provided by your ISP. If you don’t know what they are, many have had success using the ones provided by OpenDNS:
    208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
For “Domain Name” enter what is provided by your ISP. (i.e. dslextreme.com)
For “DHCP Client ID” enter what is provided by your ISP. (i.e. dslextreme)
    Click “Continue”.
Review the Summary and then click “Update.”
If you are presented with +“This device and its network services will be temporarily unavailable”+ click “Continue”.
At “Congratulations! Your Time Capsule is configured…” click “Done”.
NOTE: If, after the Time Capsule restarts, you are present with “Problem 1 of 1: Internet Connection”, click “Continue” and then “Ignore”.
Select “Update my Time Capsule with these settings”, and click “Update”.
When the Time Capsule reappears, click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Wireless” in the toolbar.
Click the “Internet Connection” tab. Here you may see an IP address that looks similar to this, “169.254.96.123”.
Click the “Renew DHCP Lease” button.
The number beside “IP address” should refresh in a few moments.
If the “Update” button in the lower right becomes active, then click it.
    *Join the New Network*
Finally, go up to the Airport menu. Give Airport a few moments to scan for available networks. When your new network appears, select it from the list.
At “Mac OS X wants to use your confidential information…” click “Always Allow”.
You should now be connected to the internet.
    Cheers!

  • Lost connection with Time Capsule (Office for Mac programmes run down)

My colleague and I work at the office with 2 Macbooks. Both are connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule, which we use as a shared hard disk. We use Office 2008 for Mac. Now Word and Excel run down often after of little things like doing a search or cutting and pasting. I get the spinning ball can only do a forced quit to end the program. This is frustrating and time consuming!
A friend told me to change my UID, cause my colleague and I both have the same UID (501) at our Macbooks. He downloaded Server Admin Tools to change my UID into 1001 with Work Group Manager. But when I arrived at the office this morning I didn't have a connection with the Time Capsule. To be able to work I changed the UID back to 501 again (but now I can't open excel document inless I drag them to the hard disk of my Macbook).
The friend is not a Apple professional so he doens’t know how to help me anymore. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

Temporarily, try connecting an Ethenret cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open AirPort Utility and Click Manual Setup
Click on the word "Status" (2nd Line) and a window will open to with information about why the light is flashing amber

Can home sharing link automatically or do I have to connect each time after connection is lost ie if i leave house for day with iphone or ipad do I have to connect shared library again on iphone/ipad in evening when back in house? It would be good if it just links automatically

Well then maybe I misunderstood what you meant even though now that you explained it again, I should have though about that.
When you leave the house in the morning with your device, you lose the connection to the library because you are no longer on the same WiFi network as you are at home. You have to be on the same network in order to use Home Sharing. Once you get home again, you have to select the Shared Library again.
I apologize for the confusion or misunderstanding.

  • PORTAL LOST CONNECT DURING RUN TIME

This happens while Portal is running. The HTTP server loses its' connection with
the database (probably from DAD) a couple of times per day. The more people that access the more down times. I checked everything during the time lost connection: alertlog
file,error_log file. No specific error in the logfiles. I checked JServ demo
and Mod_Plsql they are working fine. The only thing you can not connect to http://...../pls/portal30. That means you can't get in to Portal. The HTTP
disconnects to the DAD in the database.
Therefore I have to terminate the HTTP server and restart it (sometime even
need to restart database. If I only restart HTTP,the disconnection happens
    again very soon).

  • The connection to our airport express says it has time out and lost connection?

the connecton to airport express say it has timed out and lost connection. can not hear music from airport express speakers.  only the computer

What is your overall network configuration with the AirPort Express? That is, is the Express configured to join a wireless network provided by another router or is it your main router? If it is joining another router, what is the make & model of this router? Which model of the Express do you have? Finally, if you have another router, where is the Express located related to this router? Same room, different room, different floor?

  • Nexus 1000V CPU usage - Lost connection

    Hello.
Sometimes, a VM lose network connection.
No problem where detected on the network to explain this problem.
This VM (running Windows Server 2003 R2) is connected through VMware flexible network adapter.
I verified all parameters in the running config of this virtual port : no difference with other VMs.
The only thing a noticed is when connections are lost, CPU usage of the VSM VM is about 60% (shown in vCenter performance charts), while the CPU usage is normally staying under 5%.
I look at the return of show log command in the VSM but nothing is logged about CPU usage or lost connection of the VEM.
How can I explaind and/or correct these loses of network connection ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Julien,
    A few questions.
    1. Version of 1000v and ESX
    2. Only the one Win2k3 VM affected?
    3. Have you tried the VMXNet3 driver?  It's the recommended one for Windows & 1000v.
    4. When the issue occurs are the VSM and VM running on the same ESX host?
    5. How frequently does the issue occur & any pattern?  (time of day etc)
The VSM doesn't really have much bearing on a VMs network operation.  Once the VEM the VM is running on has been programmed it should stay running fine, unless the VEM loses connectivity to the VSM, and you say this hasn't happend - correct?
Can you also attach the output of "show log" from the VSM, in & around the time you see the high CPU timestamps?
    Thanks,
    Robert

  • Executable iterator lost connection to Data Control

    Hello,
    I am using JDev 11.1.1.4.0.
I am having problem creating setCurrentRowWithKeyValue method call component on a task flow. It just won't let me do it by dragging the the operation, setCurrentRowWithKeyValue(green gear), from Data Control. However, some of the other VO's operation gets created with no issue. After some digging around, I found that the VO that doesn't work lost connection to the data control. This is what I mean:
I create a sample.jsff and drag "FirstName" attribute from NotWorkingVO and drop it there. Go to bindings tab for sample.jsff and you see "FirstName" attribute under Bindings and NotWorkingVOIterator under Executables. If you select "FirstName" attribute, an arrow points to the NotWorkingVOIterator. However, there is no arrow pointing from NotWorkingIterator to any of the Data control on the right.
Go back to Design tab of the jsff, drag and drop "Address" attribute from WorkingVO. Go to bindings tab and select "Address" attribute under bindings. This time the arrow to WorkingVOIterator appears and the arrow from the iterator to Data Control also appear pointing to correct VO, WorkingVO.
With this model, I cannot create NotWorkingVO setCurrentRowWithKeyValue method call component on the task flow, while I can create WorkingVO setCurrentRowWithKeyValue method call component on the task flow.
I do not know why these 2 VOs behave differently. I have compared their setting and properties, but couldn't find any glaring differences.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Bones Jones

  • "Lost Connection with AIM" repeatedly

    Hi there,
I'm using a new Linksys WRT54GL router with the DD-WRT v23 firmware -- which is otherwise fabulous, by the way -- but since going with the router iChat has been pretty unreliable. I can't connect to my sister in England (I'm in Canada): we keep getting "insufficient bandwidth" errors (I'm on a very hi-speed cable internet connection, so I don't think it's me!). Moreover, AIM frequently kicks me off iChat with the message "Lost connection with AIM".
I've configured my router using instructions linked from this forum. I'm forwarding the following ports to my computer:
    5060
    5190
    5220
    5222
    5678
    16384
And while I can connect to other users okay (except my sister, it seems), staying connected it a real issue. Can anyone recommend a fix?
    Thanks,
    Aaron.
PowerBook G4 15-inch 1.67 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   The last PowerBook ever!

    Hi Aaron,
This last port should be a group of 20 ports (16384-16403)
iChat needs 4 ports from this group to do 1-1 Audio or Video chats.
Many Linksys have UPnP. It is found in the Administration tab. If you have this you could use this. Disable the Port Forwarding if you do.
Also port Forwwarding points to one IP/computer. If this is the case for you and you still have the device doing DHCP there is a cance you computer's IP has changed if it goes to sleep or is shut down when the lease time runs out.
Check this on your computer and the Port Forwarding settings.

  • "Lost connection with AIM" error message

    Hi all,
I've been a long-time iChat user — I've had very few problems, but now, at home, whenever I've been connected for about 10-15mins, iChat just disconnects with the simple iChat Connect Alert that the app has "Lost connection with AIM. The connection with the host was unexpectedly lost."
My Buddy List collapses to a "disconnected" header and I diappear from my Buddies' buddy lists. If I'm in the middle of a chat (video, audio or text), the chat continues uninterrupted, but I still disappear from people's lists as if I'd disconnected manually. Weird.
The net result is that I have to keep checking to see if I'm connected and then reconnecting all the time. A real pain in the proverbial.
It only happens at the house. My laptop doesn't disconnect if I'm at the office, for instance.
I have cable, coming in to Netgear 814v2 router; out to an 8-port gigabit switch, which then feeds my three main machines. All via ethernet cabling.
All machines have the same problem described above.
I've made the usual Quicktime setting changes.
I've listed the necessary ports in my Mac firewall settings (even though the firewall is turned off).
Each machine has a dedicated IP issued by the router (10.0.0.2 thru 10.0.0.5)
The router firmware is up to date.
What else is there?! I have no problems initiating or joining any sort of chat with my buddies around the world. I have excellent bandwidth. My internet and email are never interrupted 24/7.
Can someone help me? Pretty please?

    Hi
Try this log on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190
Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

    Hi,
There can be many reasons why the Login is "up the creek".
Any break in the network at your end whilst logged in will cause  an issue.
A sort of discrepancy between what iChat thinks the state should be and what the server thinks.
If they don't agree the server will refuse to accept.
A Crash at the server end which does not log you out properly will also do it.
Any file at any time can be come corrupted.
Luckily with the iChat .plists they are recreated if removed with an iChat Restart.
If it were AIM you can also get your Account Suspended  and this will not log you in.
(It tends to happen from Chat rooms where people notify AIM about bad behaviour (as they see it) and you have to apply to get Un-suspended).
Most of the big IM services use multiple servers.
Sometimes these go out of Sync.
In the case of AIM this happens when they remove Old unused Screen Names from people's Buddy List prior to making them available for re-registration.  I am not sure if this happens at Google.
You seem to be talking about an account that has worked at Work and having new computer at home.
As I mentioned the Priority thing you have not said that it has coincided with the new computer logging in  (this will kick the work Computer out of Google whether you are logged in  on the Web Mail page or in iChat)
IN addition to that iChat stays partially logged in for Off Line IMs
This is done in the background by a support app called iChatAgent
If your Computer is ON but ichat is not started people can still send you Messages.
Instead of saving these on the server until you login iChat will start up.
Depending if the home Mac is effecting the Work Login it may be holding sway over your Login.
Using your girlfriend's login may have booted her Off Line where she normally uses the name/login.
The AIM Side can be specifically set to allow Multiple Logins and therefore NOT allow them.  If this happens you get a warning and messages to do something about it.
You do not get these in any Jabber or Google Login as the Priority setting is supposed to take care of it.
If the Login works at the Web Mail Login and on one computer then the .plist on the work computer is the most likely issue.
There is a small chance that a Corrupt Buddy Pic (Home Folder/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat/Pictures) may be the cause.
Set this folder to icon view and also use the Finder's View Menu > Show View Options and select icon view.
This should show all pics as their icon.
    Check that all display properly.
At this point I would try a COMBO version update install of the last Update you did over what you have.
This often corrects hard to trace things
    The 10.5.8 COMBO is here
