Hi,
My OS is XP and I found that driver for display card has lost twice. One symptom is that when I scroll my browser or a word document, the screen flickers badly.
It won't work properly if I simply reinstall the driver. I uninstalled anything containing "nVidia" from Control Panel and reinstalled the driver, it will work properly again.
My ordered OS is Vista Home Basic, and I changed to XP. The driver I'm using is downloaded from lenovo's website.
Anyone knows why?

Are you installing the drive from the device manager or from the actual nvidia installer? Try doing both - and also remember to install the LCD monitor driver, which helps correct issues that may arise.

I lost driver for Lacie d2 8x burner

Hi. I originally had my Lacie external burner attached to my G4. It's been a while. Now, I can't find the disk that came with my Lacie. I want to hook it up to my Macbook Pro. The driver was bundled with Toast 6 or 7. I can't find the driver download from Lacie.com. I tried contacting the company but they're closed for the holidays. I need it to burn multiple copies of "disk images" that I saved using iDVD.
Is my Lacie d2 external burner even compatible to my MacbookPro?
Do you know where I can download the driver?

A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.
What does the selling of your MacBook have to do with installing Leopard on your PowerBook?

What is it you need - Windows installer disc or something else? Your question is unclear. Could you be more specific?

k, i have tried installing the linux x-fi driver for my sound card... but im sorta having trouble installing the driver.
i sorta find the instructions arch wiki to install the driver confusing... how do you install it? im really lost, and im very new to linux.... but i do got computer smarts...

The wiki page (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HCL/Sound_Cards) doesn't cover installing drivers for creative soundcards as such. They should be installed automatically. However it doesn't mention the x-fi at all. I am not sure what the procedure is for your card. Are you sure it hasn't been autodetected? Also you should read this article if you haven't already. I have spent the past 3 hrs trying to wirelessly connect my macbook pro to my new 8100
because it is a new mac, it has now disc drive
i have tried continuously to download the printer utility off the HP site (5 times) - it keeps referring to me making sure my printer is wirelessly connected
to do that i need the utility..... it is a loop from hell
i have connected direct via the USB - i can do v basic b/w printing. there are no options to even print in colour!!!!
im totally lost and frankly this is outragous

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand you are trying to connect your HP Officejet 8100 to your MacBook Pro running the Mavericks 10.9 Operating system. You are unable to install using a disc because your Mac does not come with a CD drive.
Because you are guys are using the Mavericks OS X you must install the printer using the Apple Updates. Please click on the link below, this document explains how to install the print driver on a Mac for a USB or a network connection. The OS X v10.9 Mavericks driver for your printer is available through Apple Software Update (ASU). Additionally, you can perform basic print jobs using AirPrint without installing a driver.

Choosing an external hard drive for back up

This is more for general advice than a specific question. Right now I have my hard drive partitioned and use the second as a backup with Time Machine. It will work for most situations but not all, such as a home fire or break-in (all my photos and music, lost forever!).
What I want to do is buy an external hard drive for backup and keep it at work. I would then bring it home every few weeks to update, but otherwise not store it in the same place as my computer. That way I would never lose more than a few weeks worth of stuff. So, a few questions, the nature of which will let you know how much of a novice I am at this.
1) Right now, Time Machine automatically updates once per hour. When I am using the external drive will I be able to set Time Machine up to only update my back up files when I connect the external drive. Is this difficult.
2) Any suggestions on what kind of external hard drive I should buy, or what features I should look for would be appreciated. I live in a remote area, so something I can get from futureshop.ca would be preferable.
3) My hard drive is about 280 GB. What size should I buy.
Advice on any of the above would be appreciated. Also feel free to toss in anything else you think I should know or consider.

This is what I am currently doing among 3 different backup disks (1 Time Capsule, a WD500GB, and a Lacie 160GB). You won't have to "set" anything up other than attach the new drive and select it in the TM prefs. Then when your done, reselect your normal TM disk.

Most any drive will do, as you partition it correctly to begin with.
*_How Should a Time Machine Hard Disk be Prepared?_*
For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve +at least+ double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
One poster recommended this regarding multiple partitions: “If you do create multiple partitions (half and half would be a good place to start), make sure you use the first partition for Time Machine, and the second for your own stuff (the first one will be on top in the graphical representation shown in Disk Utility; you'll understand when you see the partition tab). This way, you can expand the Time Machine volume at any later time by deleting the second partition. Procedure
Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
Launch Disk Utility.
It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
Select the "Partition" tab.
For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Choose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups. Ensure that the two partitions have different names.)
Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
Click "OK".
Click "Apply". Then click “Partition”.
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups. If you chose to create 2 partitions, then select the first partition for Time Machine backups, and the second for additional files/folders.
3) My hard drive is about 280 GB. What size should I buy.
Any TM backup drive should be +at least+ twice as large as your Macs internal hard disk.

See pondini about mixing data and backups.. but remember this.. the TC has no way to back itself up and TM cannot backup files on the TC. Anything not backed up on the TC will be lost at some future point.

1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

Any need to partition hard drives for FCS or CS4 on my new Mac Pro?

This is my first post here but have learned a lot recently just by visiting various threads. I'm new to Mac and Final Cut Studio so I have a few questions about setting up the system and hard drives. I've read about partitions on hard drives on various sites but I wonder if that is outdated advice at this point. I will be learning FCS and CS4 by working on various SD DV and HDV/AVCHD projects so I want my system flexible but as high performance as I can muster. I will be working mostly in FCP and AfterEffects for a while and do intend to burn blu-ray discs eventually.
My system is a current Mac Pro quad core with 8gb RAM with current versions of final cut and adobe suites. I will do a clean install with snow leopard. I have a 640gb main drive and I've purchased three 1tb Western Digital black internal drives. I am wondering if I need to partition my main drive because I may want to also run a windows OS eventually for blu-ray playback. The other 3 drives are intended for project files, media/capture and back-up respectively. I don't have the budget for a RAID at the moment. So my questions for this thread are:
1. Do I need to partition the main drive now or should I wait until I need to do so with boot camp/windows installation later?
2. If I should partition main drive now, how much should I dedicate for the second partition on the OS drive for eventual windows 7/blu-ray playback?
3. Should I partition any of the three additional drives?
4. If I should partition any of those additional drives, how many partitions should I make and what sizes should the partitions be for each drive?
5. Is my plan for my four drives a sound one for my purposes? (os, projects, media, backup)

Hi, and welcome.
1. Don't partition your system drive until you need to. If you choose to run Windows via Bootcamp, you'll have to, in which case, 150GB will be plenty if all you want to do is playback (may even be overkill). However, you can probably do just as well running Windows under Parallels or VMWare, whch would be my recommendation. Performance is very good, and the ease of moving from OSX to Win makes them very convenient. Parallels (which I know better) automatically resizes the amount of space it needs to meet your usage. You can also run your Parallels virtual machine from somewhere other than your system disk. I imagine VMWare provides similar features. Both are well thought of.
2. Your disk use plan is OK, with one caveat - if what you're working on is critical to you, you should also have an external backup. With backup on an internal drive, there's a (very small, but definite) risk that, if the Mac Pro hit a disaster, your backup would be lost. I'd suggest an external Firewire 800 or eSATA enclosure and, either another drive, or just use one of the WDs there instead of internally.
3. Don't partition the other disks either. Just make sure they're formatted MAC OS Journaled (do this via Disk Utility). Another benefit of Parallels/VMWare is they allow Windows to read/write Mac formatted disks.

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk. If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Make sure the Automatic Duplexing option is enabled:
Enter Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
Right click the printer icon, then click Printer Properties.
Click the Device Settings tab.
Set the Automatic Two-Sided Duplex Accessory as installed and click OK to save the change.
The HP Toolbox FX ( as part of a Full Feature Software) is not compatible with Windows 7 but only a UPD solution, full functionality is only available uisng compatibility mode with the Windows Vista software but for a 32-bit OS only, not for a 64-bit OS:
