Lost OS 9 with Leopard

I updated my powerbook G4 to Leopard, not realizing I would lose OS 9. I have a contact list program that relies on OS9. Any thoughts?
Thanks

I was looking forward to upgrading to an Oct/PM or a 24" iMac once they get past 2.8GHz, but the fact that my One Leopard install makes ALL my work harder, (no Apple Pro APPs here), have me considering an XP machine before they're gone, and I hate anything MS!
Oh no! Isn't there a help line for those contemplating the dark side? LOL! Just kidding BDAqua.
Actually, I've used a 24" Al iMac (OS X Tiger) that my friend bought in August and it is a really nice machine. He still has his Sawtooth G4 to do all his OS 9 apps and a few other things like scanning (i.e., he encountered a few problems with Intel Mac and older, 3rd party, OS X software; one of the problems is his Epson Perfection Photo Scanner won't work with his Al iMac even with the latest Epson updates). Overall, his jump to the Al iMac was positive, but not impressive enough to make him junk his upgraded Sawtooth G4.

  • I lost all sound with leopard?

nothing. . . when i open system preferences, no devices are found. . . how can that be - had sound yesterday before i installed leopard!

My Leopard audio problem is that it works for a while (20 min to 3 hours) then I get a blast of static that continues until I reboot. Then, repeat, repeat, repeat, ad infinitum. I did an archieve and install (two systems, one mini, one MacBook, both machines have max RAM & faster HDs) I'm not touching my wife's iMac until I have a handle on the problem. I've run the latest version of Onyx (at first it seemed to work but then the problem returned) I've checked the midi audio recomendation with no results. I even did a complete reformat and install, same-o.
In conjunction with the last, how do you get an iTunes library copied without doing one song at a time (2000+ songs)?
Third question, I forgot to run a backup copy of iWork 08 and have managed to lose the original. Will Apple replace (& at what cost) or allow me to get a download version?

  • Lost all printing with Leopard a few months ago, need to fix, please help.

I think all of my printing capabilities went away a few months ago when i updated to 10.5.6. haven't been able to fix it on my own.
I have a hp 130 and a konica 6500 with a ic-304 creo. the hp is set up from a windows printer server and connected through a networked ethernet. the creo is pretty much its own print server with ip address, also available through the windows print server.
I go to add my printer, enter in the ip address, or browse, choose my driver, add printer, ect. if I am able to accomplish those tasks, then i attempt a print, only to have the que instantly stopped, and i can't get it to resume printing or to print.
for the last few months, i've been using a tiger laptop, a virtual XP on the macpro, the Xp box on the konica printer and a thin client PC to print. but I'd really like to regain print functionality on the macpro and not have to deal with windows anymore.
have tried those weird security login things that pop up when i try to resume printing: (server/username), (username/server), (guest), updating firmware, re-installed drivers.
please help, I really don't understand security, or how to make it work with printing, or bypass it entirely. i don't know how to get printing back.

  • Lost functionality with Leopard...

    Lost functionality with Leopard upgrade....
1 - AOL for Mac OS X (10.3.7) application: can't access email addresses when writing mail and can't attach files.
2 - Canon's MP Navigator (2.2.2) won't batch scan documents with MP830. Worked fine with Tiger.
3 - Can't mount USB hard drive attached to my airport extreme and when I try the extreme goes offline and I have to restart it.
How about you all. I only used 'em all the time.

    I have the same problem.
After upgrade from my Mac Pro to Mac OS X Lion yesterday, the same problem happened described by danhalli.
No  connection to the printer over 2101nw. The MAC gets all information if an other computer makes a connection to the print server, so the communication works,  however connection cannot be established.
There was no way to fix it. complete new installation from Printer Software or wireless  HP Print Server did not help.
Important:  all other computer in the network are working fine with the connection manager (MAC and Microsoft PC´s)
All MAC computer are working fine  with the SW 10.6.8 . The  SW 10.7.2 does not work I hope it will be fixed soon. If you can not print, it takes a lot of time !!!!

  • Started with Leopard, added OS9, lost a HDD?

    Hello,
The Mac I recently bought came with Leopard clean installed on the 2nd HDD, but I found out that it had previously had OS9.2.2 on the 1st HDD. Since the installation of leopard was on a completely separate drive, I figured there was little harm to install 9.2 onto the master drive.
After days of reading, I decided to proceed making sure to choose the custom installation option and clean install to the bare master drive. Fearing no data loss, I felt confident in my choice...until I tried to boot back into leopard. During the installation of 9.2.1 I did notice that I had to initialize the drive that I wanted to install to because neither of the 20Gb HDD's showed up initially.
The installation went extremely well, but I can't even pull up the second drive in 9.2.1. Having a copy of 10.1 available, I tried to boot into that cd after repeated attempts(x-key during boot, resetting pram, etc) failed. The cd tried to load a few times, but it wouldn't on it's own. I then tried to use the disc utilities on the CD when booted into 9.2.1, but it too wanted me to initialize the 2nd drive.
I'm holding back on that because I'm assuming that entails a format of the drive and I know the actual data is intact, but can't figure out the whole how to boot back into it issue. Any ideas on how to get this back up and running while still being able to boot into both OS's?
This configuration started as a 400Mhz Sawtooth, but has been upgraded with a third party 1Ghz proc. As stated, it has dual 20Gb HDD's. I have original retail version copies of 9.0, 9.2.1, and 10.1. I'm also considering picking up 10.5.4 retail either way with a leaning towards 10.4.

    Hi, Pyromethious -
It sounds like the second drive (the one with Leopard) was last formatted using OSX's Disk Utility, and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected. If that is the case, then the drive can not be mounted by any OS 9, including when booted to an OS 9 Install CD.
Article #TA20774 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
That article suggests a possible non-destructive remedy by using Drive Setup while booted to an OS 9 Innstall CD; this will work only if the drive once had OS 9 drivers on it. Unfortunately, even then it rarely works.
The only other solution to be able to have that drive mount when booted to OS 9 is to then re-initialize the drive; this can be done using OS 0's Drive Setup or OSX's Disk Utility. If using the latter, be sure that the option to install OS 9 drivers has been selected. In either case, this is a destructive process - all data on the drive will be erased; be sure to first back up (usually with a cloning utility) all data you don't want to lose, using another drive or disk as the recipient.
Of course, you can also do nothing, and just plan on not having that drive available when booted to OS 9.
As far as getting the machine booted to OSX again, since OS 9 can not mount the other drive, its Startup Disk control panel can not 'see' it as a choice. Try one of the following -
    • Restart or boot the machine, immediately press the Option key, keep it held down. This should bring up Startup Manager, within which you should be able to select the OSX volume for booting -
Article #HT1310 - Startup Manager: How to Select a Startup Volume
    • Boot the machine to your Leopard installation disk, and use its Startup Disk (in System Preferences) to select OSX on the hard drive as the boot OS.
    • Holding down the X key with the OSX 10.1 disk not in the drive should also cause it to boot to OSX on its hard drive. If you find it difficult to get the OSX 10.1 disk out of the drive, try holding down the mouse button immediately after restarting or booting - that's a hardware-based instruction for the Mac to eject all removable media. You can also try pressing the eject button on the front of the Mac after restarting or booting, when the drive has been energized but before the drive has spun up and tried to read the disk.
Not sure why the machine won't boot to the OSX 10.1 install disk, unless that specific version is not supported by the CPU upgrade.

  • "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."  Trying to format my iomega external HD for use with Mac

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility, the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:
*** malloc[419]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x290a410; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug : for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)
    Workaround
    Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
    iTunes.pkg
    iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
    Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

i'm just scared i will do something wrong on my own and lose my data.
You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

  • Printer Drivers Not Working with Leopard

I downloaded the Oki C5150n driver for Intel Macs and they don't work properly with Leopard. I need to use the bypass feed, but the drop down menu to choose the paper source only drops partway down not allowing any choices.
This is only happening with CS and CS3. The printer works fine with MS Office.
I have the Oki driver on my Macbook Pro and it works fine, but I'm running Tiger on the Macbook Pro.
    Any Help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,

Same issues here...same setup. This has been an intermittent issue for some time now. My latest incident was when power was lost during one of the big snow storms. Print jobs hang when going trough Time Capsule (wired or wireless) but are fine if plugged into computers USB port. I have resolved this issue before by following similar steps outlined above, but the solution seem to be hit or miss.

  • OK, what cheap controllers ARE compatible with Leopard?

Some people say the m-audio ones work with Leopard, and some say they do not. I don't know what to believe...

M-Audio don't have the best reputation, which is a bit sad since I bought a pile of m-audio interfaces for my music labs at University.
The fact is that there are no m-audio drivers for Leopard at the moment. I've got the Firewire 410 working but not the Radium 61. Other have managed to get them working and one enterprising soul has rigged the MIDI USB interface via his own generic driver to get it working. A bit rich for my taste, though.
My Korg Kontrol 49 works fine with Logic Studio/Leopard and, given the problems I've had in the past with m-audio, they've lost my business next time I upgrade the labs.
    HTH.

  • Etended Desktop Stopped Working With Leopard..

With regards to an iMac 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1GB DDR SDRAM, I upgraded to Leopard (vs 10.5.2). At first, the computer would not boot up and all I got was a blue screen. I've worked through that mess, but now I have lost the option for extended desktop. When I go to System Preferences > Displays > Display Preferences, there is no arrangement tab. When I go through the help screens, I get a message that says there is no arrangement tab as the computer is not capable of doing this.
Before I upgraded to Leopard, I had no problem using extended desktop with dual monitors. Now all I get is mirrored desktop on both screens.
My question is, is it possible that there is not enough RAM to support the extended desktop and that is why it is not showing up as an option? With Leopard running and nothing else, there is less than 200 Mb of RAM left for everything else. My computer has 1 GB of RAM.

That fixed it. I did not know that my extended desktop was being provided by Screen Spanning Doctor. Once I found it on my computer and enabled it, I was able to use the arrangement tab in display preferences and everything is back to normal.
    Thank you!
BTW, for anyone wondering, Screen Spanning Doctor works flawlessly with Leopard!

  • Does ilife 2008 com with Leopard?

Does ilife 2008 come bundled with Leopard? I was indicated so by a retailer, but doubt it. I install ilife on top of Leopard?

Nick is right. There is one thing you need to know in addition. Apple has a tech note saying that if you do an Archive and Install, you will need to reinstall the iLife 08 and any other Apple software additions as they install to the system and some parts are lost if you do not choose the "Upgrade" option.
So if you are installing new Apple software, do it after you upgrade to Leopard or use the "upgrade" option for Leopard install.

  • What's wrong with Leopard mail, its allowed in, something corrupting my mac

    Hi,
I recently bought a brand new 24 inch iMac and Leopard. Most things were fine until I received an unsolicited email on 28th Nov ...from a
Gemma Hindley FW; Compost like a pro
since then mail has gone haywire. I cannot delete this email at all. I cant receive any emails and I work from home and am really desperate as this is causing me major stress.
The waste paper icon has gone from my mail window and although emails are deleted from the working window, the dont go in the waste bin or the waste bin in the dock. When I quit ad reopen Gemma Hindley reappears.
Many times a completely different window appears when I open mail one that I have never seen before and is very difficult to navigate. many of the icons in the mail header bar are non operative with this window.
Other times Mail wont open, or wont quit, or cant send emails, have nt received any since Gemma this email. Then I went through this forum and found that if I
Open mail go to prefs general and switch check mail "manually.
    Force quit mail
Open Mail again go to prefs junk mail and turn off spam filtering
This then allowed me to open the usual mail working window and I received that infuriating email again and no other ones at all. I have sent myself emails and so have others but they have not been received by me at all. the above steps allowed me to send emails.
There is obviously a problem with Leopard mail. Whether or not this email has corrupted my mac I don't know. It looks like it is blocking all my incoming emails.
I am not as adept as many of you on this forum, just a simple user trying to earn a living and not able to do so at present. Help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. George UK

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

  • Constant lock ups with Leopard!

I find myself having to hold in the power button to turn my computer off almost everyday now! I am not sure what is causing these constant lock ups! Ever since upgrading to Leopard have I noticed this. Yesterday It happened when trying to open iTunes. Today it happened when I clicked on MAIL. The icon just bounces in the dock and nothing happens. I hit FORCE QUIT and that doesn't work either.
Do I need to clear something out or get rid of something? Even when I try to restart my computer sometimes that will lock up too! The only way to get around any of these issues is to hold in the power button to turn the whole computer off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. Once its back on, then I have full functionality out the computer again but its getting on my nerves that I have to do this all to often!
I think they are some cool features with Leopard but I am experiencing way to many bugs/problems with it to be 100% happy with it.
As I am writing this posting, I just clicked on my APPLE icon in the top left of the screen and then clicked ABOUT THIS MAC to make sure I was using the most current version, and NOTHING happened!

Try reinstalling. It sounds like you did an upgrade from an earlier version that may have been corrupt to start with. You may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
