Lost Sharing Preference Folder

This is really strange! I just was looking at my Preferance Panel window and my Sharing icon has disappeared. I tried the apple help, and when I selected "Open File Sharing" I got a warning that file sharing was either disabled or not installed. I know it was there previously, because I had set up my computer to share my printer with other computers in the house, and it worked well. I noticed this problem because my son was unable to use the shared printer last night. Any solutions to this problem would be most appreciated.

It's also possible that your file sharing is off and that there is also some icon corruption. I'd try trashing these 2 files:
Navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Then relaunch System Preferences.

  • Fireworks CS5 wont start up in lion (error in preferences folder)

Ok, after 10 days with out FW CS5 on my new Lion installment. I finally cracked some kind of bug where FW would freeze just after loading and the last text in the CS5 logo was tabs and then the processor would go up to around 81% and just freeze.
Apple and Adobe, both blame each other and none could give an answer, but to re-install everything, which i just had done. (Man the big dudes are lost sometimes!)
"My" problem turned, that I seemlessly had a corrupt file in my ~/Library/Preferences/
But i couldnt figure out which one it was.
I ran a Terminal plutil -s *.plist and no errors showed up.
The solution turned out to be:
Deleted the entire macromedia folder in the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder and now its working.
macromedia is the name of the old FW creators before Adobe took over.
So i am guessing there is some kind of error, but who can tell. I cant, adobe cant and apple cant.
    Well hope this helps somebody!

    Hi Folks!
Its because the macromedia folder is recreated each time flash is used somehow.
I made an Automator App that
    1) Locates the ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia
    2) Moves the Macromedia Folder to the Trash
    3) Runs Adobe Fireworks CS 4
So all I need to do is click this Automator App instead of the Fireworks App in my Dock, and then I am sure it will start.
(I Know that this is not a 100% cool in the end fix, but seems like Adobe are ignoring this error after several of attempts of direct action to tell them.)
Here is how to build your own automator app that does these three steps for you.
My finder is in danish, but I translated it in red text for you. Guess its easy to figure out:
Remember!!! If you are running Adobe Fireworks CS5 then choose that in step 3 instead :-)

  • Preference Error: Could not load sharing preference pane

For some reason my second computer (iMac 27) is no longer showing up on the left pane of any finder window on my MBP. The iMac is running Yosemite and the MBP is running Mavericks. So I open System preferences to see if there is a problem with "Sharing" on the MBP. I'm getting a Preference Error: Could not load sharing preference pane. Do I need to install the update to fix this? I'm not ready to commit to Yosemite completely. I build apps for iOS and Mac and really need to test in both OS environments.

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • System Preferences Folder

I've lost my System Preferences folder on my mac & need to know how to get it back.

    Welcome!
This may not be the same problem at all - it's hard to tell from what the OP has posted so far!
In your case, if the application is still there but won't open, it would probably not help to use Pacifist to reinstall it.
It may be that your system needs little more than a bit of maintenance. Try repairing permissions with Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities), and if that doesn't work, download a copy of YASU from www.versiontracker.com and set it to run all tasks, then leave the system alone for about 10 minutes while it runs and reboots. Reboot will take longer than usual and the system will appear slow after that for a few minutes, but that should fix it.
If it does not, download a copy of Preferential Treatment (again from versiontracker) and set it to scan both system-level and user-level properly lists. If it finds any that are problematic, let it remove them.
If none of the above helps, post back with details of what you did and what happened.

  • Sharing preference on system preference has disappeared

I wanted to add a folder to share on my network and when I went to my system preferences I noticed that the sharing option is gone. Can anyone help me get it back?

it worked for me too, it's interesting that I discovered this just today when I was installing a VNC client to use from the iPhone and I couldn't find the Sharing preference pane to change the password...
    anyway, thanks a lot!

  • Contribute error: shared preferences file can't be found

I am using Contribute 3 (from Macromedia Studio 8) on a Mac
    (Mac OS X 10.5).
I have a connection to a server, and right now I have one
draft webpage. I finished editing it and wanted to publish it, but
when I did so, an error message appeared: Contribute can't find the
file with the shared preferences. To recreate it, the administrator
must administer the website again. (translated from German, not
    exact).
So I think it is telling me, as soon as I reconnect again as
an admin, this file will be recreated. But I am an admin!
If I click "connect" again anyway, it appears that the draft
webpage is loading again, but then it again says "connect" -
instead of "publish". So there is no way of publishing this draft
webpage. I also cannot download and edit any webpage.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for the help!

The problem is, just before I read your reply, I deleted the
connection. But now I can't create it again, because all of the
folders which Contribute created are still there and I can't delete
them. It says that it isn't possible to delete these files. I could
delete the webpages themselves, but not the images folder, the _mm
    folder etc...
And now when I try to create the connection using the
connection assistant, it tells me that "Contribute detected a
network- or filesystem-error. Repeat the operation or contact the
administrator, if the error appears again."
What should I do now? I thought if I just change the file
permissions it could work, but I can only get into the server with
an FTP app and I can't change permissions with that.
Last solution: I'll have to call my ISP ask ask if they call
delete everything. But is there a better way?

  • Web Analysis 931, apply shared preferences to a group of users

I want to assign prefrences to a group.
Provisioned a group (via HSS) to have access to BI+
Created a analyzer preference for a startup page for that group.
But the users in that group are not getting this new preference file in their profiles or the startup page.
I want to set a PRESET startup page for a group. Please advice the method or a document that I can refer.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Jorn,
I don't know SDK so can't answer that part.
    Regarding the other questions:
    - As an alternative, is it possible to configure an inbox so it is shown as additional inbox in the InfoView of a user group? Something like a "shared group inbox"?
The answer is no. The Inboxes are associated to one account and you need to be logged in with that account to access it.
    - As an alternative, is it possible to have a shared group folder and send the scheduled report there?
Outside of BO yes. You can schedule reports to a shared folder on your network. But not in BO. You can only create an instance where the original report is saved.
Another thing that might help you, would be to have a look at publications. You can schedule several reports at the same time and send them to different groups. It will save a lot of time compared to doing it for each report.
    Regards,
    Philippe

  • Shared Music Folder

I live in a dorm and do not have a "Shared Music" folder. Everyone else on my hall has this folder and is able to listen to each other's music. I installed the latest update for iTunes, and have also switched my preferences to allow for shared music, but I am still having no luck. Any insights would be appreciated.

You shoud try resetting permissions using BatChmod. This is a utility essential for those with multiple logins on the same Mac.

  • Reset File Sharing Preferences?

Is there a way to reset the file sharing preferences in Leopard?
On a fresh install of Leopard you get an automatically made folder entry under Shared Folders in File Sharing in System Preferences. The folder is called, for example, "Reuben's Public Folder". I deleted this folder entry by mistake and now I want to get it back. Sure, I can just add my Public folder to this Shared Folders list, but I want it to be called "Reubens's Public Folder". Can anyone please tell me how to do that?

Thanks for the link biovizier, that was enough information for me to figure it out :)!!!
    HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS:
    (1) click on Finder and then "go to folder", type in /var/db/dslocal/nodes
    (2) then do a get info on the "Default" folder and allow EVERYONE read+write access
    (3) do the same for the the following two folders, CONFIG and SHAREPOINTS
    (4) do a get info on the Public.plist file, and allow EVERYONE read+write access
    (5) rename the Public.plist to "username's Public Folder.plist"
    (6) open this file in a text editor (I used SubEthaEdit), and change every instance where it just says "Public" to "username's Public Folder"
    (7) save the file, and change the permissions of that file and all of the folders above back to "no access" for the EVERYONE group
Close and Restart File Sharing in System Preferences .... and you're done!
It'll still say the folder being shared is "Public" inside of System Preferences, but when users connect, it'll say "username's Public Folder"

  • Preferences Error: Could not load Sharing preference pane.

    G'Day Folks,
I'm getting a 'Preferences Error: Could not load Sharing preference pane.' when I try to launch "Sharing" from the System Preferences.
    Have rebuilt permissions etc.
Was hoping the 10.5.1 update might fix it, but alas no.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers!

    Now the plot thickens...
I notice that the version number of my 'SharingPref.prefPane' file is 1.3.1 (dated late 2006). This is odd - since I installed Leopard initially as a clean install (drive erased and formatted before installing). I did experience some instabilities a few days after this clean install, so I then reinstalled, but the second installation was an 'Archive and Install'. I cant see how a file dated 2006 managed to get into the system.
When I checked the 'Previous Systems' folder created by by the 'Archive and Install' process, the SharingPref.prefPane' file is version 3.0 (dated 27/09/07).
So this seems to be indicating the possible problem - the 'new' SharingPref.prefPane' file is version 1.3.1 whilst the previous system is version 3.0.
Is your version of the SharingPref.prefPane' file version 1.3.1 or 3.0?
Bizarre. I'll investigate further. Any contributions or advice warmly welcomed!
Can anyone share any light on this?

  • Shared IMAP Folder poorly supported in Mail.app

The following article describes the process of constructing a shared imap folder using courier-imap.
    http://wiki.litux.org/ImapSharedFolders
Towards the end it explains how to configure your favourite mail client to access the shared folder. Unfortunatly this seems to be a weakness for Mail.app which has only very poor support.
    ----EXTRACT----
Apple Mail.app: this MUA doesn't support Folder Subscriptions, and don't support INBOX prefixes correctly (see first point). This restricts us to two options (with a third work-around): If you go to "Preferences, Advanced, IMAP path prefix" and set it to "INBOX", you'll have your folders in the right place, and not as sub-folders of INBOX, but you don't have access to "shared" folders anymore. If you remove it, you'll have access to everything but these everything will be sub-folders of INBOX, and will show in a very ugly way.
A third solution, or a ugly work-around, is to configure two accounts (You'll need different imap server names, so just add an DNS alias or point to your IMAP IP). One account will have IMAP Prefix as "INBOX" and the other one have "shared". This solution have a ugly result - you'll see your inbox messages twice in Mail.app Inbox. Just activate "View, Organise as Thread" and ignore it. Maybe Mail.app 2.0 will fix all these
    ----END EXTRACT ----
I am hoping that there is a better solution that the ones offered here.

Solved the issue, I had deleted messages unhidden.

  • Sharing preferences turned off after logging off

My sharing preferences are being turned off without a reason.  I set up my computer to share files ("File sharing" checked) and after I log off, the File sharing is unchecked and I can no longer access my computer remotely.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. • Sharing Preferences are all gone

After upgrading to Lion 10.7.4 ALL of my Sharing options in the Sharing Preference Pane have disappeared.
See screen shot. Is there ANYWAY to get them back without a reinstall?
I installed Lion from a thumb drive purchased from the Apple Store...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • 10.4.7 Lost all preferences, emails, iTunes Library etc

After a restart I appear to have lost all preferences in every programme (including system prefs) everything is behaving as if it's a first run.
Whilst not a major nightmare this is pretty far from convienient, all mail has vanished.
Anyone know why this has happened?
I am using an 2Ghz Intel Core Duo iMac, the only usual factor may be that I'm using FileVault - but should this really cause this?

    1. You wrote: "I didn't think even Admin could access other peoples user folders?
Anyway 0 in my case there is definately a red "no-go" sign on my other accounts user folder - I can't open it and I get the "insufficient priviliges" message if I try."If you check the Ownership & Permissions of the Users folder, you should find that the Group admin has Access of "Read & Write." So, an Admin user (administrator account) can open the Users folder. All Admin accounts should be part of the admin Group.
With an Admin account, you should also be able to open the Home folder of another account with Read Only access. It is the folders therein — Documents, Pictures, etc. that are retstricted.
It may be that the permissions on the affected account's Home folder are set incorrectly. Perform a Get Info on the affected account's Home folder (the one bearing that account's short name) and assure that the permissions for Others are "Read Only" in the Ownership & Permissions > Details panel of the Get Info window. If not, change them to Read Only and you should then be able to pick up the the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: FileVault - How to verify or repair a home directory image" at step 8.
