Lost VLAN Mapping on WLC 5508 (Flexconnect)

Hi guys, I have a WLC 5508 and some AIR-LAP1131AG-T-K9 all in flexconnect configuration.
The problem is that 1130 Access Points lost the VLAN Mapping configuration without reason, simple change the vlan mapping to 999 and I need to reconfigure that.
I search in some documents on cisco.com but I can't find anything about this issue.
Could you help me please?
Thanks guys.

Hi Scott
Thanks for the answer.
We have around 350 ap's, in 50 different locations (customers). The WLC is running AirOS 7.3.101.0.
Every WLAN is configured to a dummy interface, with the vlanID 2222.
This is the VlanID that the Wlan to vlan mapping got “lost” to.
Unfortunately, I am not able to see the right join time, because the WLC’s was booted. (After the error occurred). Next time I see this, I will look at the join time.
Every location (costumers) has two SSID (guest and employee). The employee network has two vlans (PC’s and BYOD). We are using NPS rules to select witch VLAN the device connectes to.
So in the FlexConnet settings, we do a WLAN to vlan mapping:
GUEST to vlanID
PC’ to vlan ID 5
And in the FlexConnect group we but in the vlan ID for BYOD.
Do you now if the AP stores this to configurations different (flash or RAM)?

  • WLC 5508 Flexconnect dhcp request landing on wrong vlan/dhcp pool

    Hi,
We've recently setup our 5508 to work with Flexconnect. The 5508's run on 8.0.100, they are setup redundant. On the remote site we've setup a local dhcp pool for the various WLAN's/VLAN's. The AP's have registered with the WLC succesfully.
We then setup the flexconnect groups, added the ap's and configured 1 vlan mapping to it's corresponding wlan id. Alsio setup the wlan, made it so it's using flexconnect, bound it to the interface which will allow it to reach the local dhcp machine.
User can see the SSID, can login using the password, but they are awarded an ip addres from a different dhcp pool, meant for antoher vlan than the bonding in the flexconnect group is indicating.
When I check the local dhcp pool for bindings on the mac address of a machine I can see multiple bindings. At 1 point I had 3 bindings in different pools, 1 on the native vlan for the AP, 1 on the vlan it should have and 1 on another vlan which wasn't configured anywhere in the flexconnect setup.
Does anybody have a clue how and why this is happening?

Just to add to Salma... All your AP's in FlexConnect are most likely connected to a trunk port. Make sure the native Vlan is defined and the vlan's are allowed on the trunk port. Then you need to verify that the AP's native Vlan and WLAN to Vlan mappings are correct. Seems like you might have some AP's that are not defined properly and that's why users that connect to a WLAN is getting in the wrong subnet.

  • Problem switching from AP-specific to Group-specific VLAN mapping

    Hello.
Some days ago, I updated our 5508 WLC to software version 7.5.102.0.
With that version, it should be possible to have a VLAN mapping specific for a Flexconnect group that is set within Flexconnect Group settings.
I did that for all my Flexconnect groups and it works fine with new access point.
For existing access point, which already have an AP-specific VLAN mapping, it is not possible to switch to Group-specific.
When I mark the WLAN in Flexconnect setting of the AP and select "Remove AP specific", I get the error message "Request failed: Vlan is not enabled on this flexconnect".
I wonder what the problem could be, because for newly installed access points, it works fine. Did I miss some settings?

  • Vlan mapping lost when fail to secondary WLC

    Hello
I have two WLCs,The primary WLC mode 5508 ,running code is 7.4.100.60, The secondary WLC mode 4402,running code is 7.0.230.0.
When ap working on 5508 wlc,it use flexconnect mode, when ap working on 4402, it will h-reap mode
    ap mode:1242、1142.
    question:
When ap fail to secondary WLC(4402),some ap will lost their vlan mapping information.not all of ap.  during fail over, ap will doanloading firmware.
is there any way to solve? thanks!

I understand. Two controllers, two different code levels. 4400 is locked in at 7.0 code and you need 7.4 for the 2600 ap.
In your orginal post you state when aps fail over from one controller to the other you lose vlans and aps code upgrade/down grade. This is not a support deisgn. You cant properly failover betwen different code versions.
If you want them to stop failing over and clients dont roam from aps on controler to 1 to aps on controller 2, simple remove the controllers from the shared mobility group and put the controllers in their own group.

  • Mapping Multiple VLANs to Multiple SSIDs as one-one in WLC 5508 via H-REAP?

    Hi All,
Can anyone please show me how to map a SSID/WLAN ID to a local vlan of a LAP in WLC 5508 using H-REAP local switched? The reason of doing this is to separate Data subnet/traffic from Voice as currently all 7925 handsets using same SSID as PCs. I would like to create two VLANs on APs and map them to two SSIDs. I could not see any option in WLC5508 to do this. Also when I change the AP mode from H-REAP to local and configuring sub interface using dot1q on the interface Gi0 then unable write running-config to startup-config because I get NVRAM Verification Failed as WLC protects any local changes on any registered LAP at NVRAM.
    Your help is much appreciated.

    Mehdi:
I am talking about HREAP groups, not AP groups.
You can not achieve what you want if you are using the same SSID on same AP with only a WLC (same AP with same SSID is mapped to different VLANs). You may need a radius server to dynamically assign a VLAN to the clients if you are using same SSID for data and voice.
If you are using different SSIDs for voice and data, you can map each SSID to its corresponding VLAN on the remote site using the VLAN mapping option under HREAP tab in the AP config page.
You can not configure the AP from its console. Lightweight APs can only be configured from the controller. (a few exceptions are available that do not apply here) .

  • FlexConnect Vlan Mapping

5508 WLC on 7.3. For locally switched WLANS, when configuring FlexConnect Vlan Mappings, concerning the native vlan, can this vlan also be used as a vlan mapping for an SSID or not?  This would mean that the mgmt IP of the AP's, and this particular SSID would be on the same network.

Yes... If your ap and users are going to be put in the data Vlan, you can just leave the port to an access port and you don't have to setup any native val. Or Vlan mapping in the FlexConnect AP. If you decide you want to map users to the voice Vlan, then you need to trunk it.
If you want to trunk it anyways, then you can map a WLAN to the data Vlan too.

  • WLC 5508: 802.1 AAA override; Authenication success no dynamic vlan assignment

    WLC 5508: software version 7.0.98.0
    Windows 7 Client
Radius Server:  Fedora Core 13 / Freeradius with LDAP storage backend
I have followed the guide at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml with respective to building the LDAP and free radius server.  802.1x authorization and authenication correctly work.  The session keys are returned from the radius server and the wlc send the appropriate information for the client to generate the WEP key.
However, the WLC does not override the VLAN assignment, even though I was to believe I set everything up correctly.  From the packet capture, you can see that verfication of client is authorized to use the WLAN returns the needed attributes:
    AVP: l=4  t=Tunnel-Private-Group-Id(81): 10
    AVP: l=6  t=Tunnel-Medium-Type(65): IEEE-802(6)
    AVP: l=6  t=Tunnel-Type(64): VLAN(13)
I attached a packet capture and wlc config, any guidance toward the attributes that may be missing or not set correctly in the config would be most appreciated.

Yes good catch, so I had one setting left off in freeradius that allowed the inner reply attributes back to the outer tunneled accept.  I wrote up a medium high level config for any future viewers of this thread:
The following was tested and verified on a fedora 13 installation.   This is a minimal setup; not meant for a "live" network (security issues  with cleartext passwords, ldap not indexed properly for performance)
    Install Packages

    9.  Add the file to the database
    ldapadd -h localhost -W -D "cn=Manager, dc=cisco,dc=com" -f /tmp/initial.ldif
    10.  Issue a basic query to the ldap db, makes sure that we can request and receive results back
    ldapsearch -h localhost -W -D cn=Manager,dc=cisco,dc=com -b dc=cisco,dc=com -s sub "objectClass=*"
    Configure and Start FreeRadius
    1. Configure ldap.attrmap, if needed.  This step is only needed if we  need to map and pass attributes back to the authenicator (dynamic vlan  assignments as an example).  Below is an example for dynamic vlan  addresses
    cd /etc/raddb
    vi ldap.attrmap
For dynamic vlan assignments, verify the follow lines exist:
    replyItem    Tunnel-Type                                   radiusTunnelType
    replyItem    Tunnel-Medium-Type                   radiusTunnelMediumType
    replyItem    Tunnel-Private-Group-Id              radiusTunnelPrivateGroupId
Since we are planning to use the userpassword, we will let the mschap  module perform the NT translations for us.  Add the follow line to  check ldap object for userpassword and store as Cleartext-Password:
    checkItem    Cleartext-Password    userPassword
    2.  Configure eap.conf.  The following sections attributes below  should be verified.  You may change other attributes as needed, they are  just not covered in this document.
    eap
    {      default_eap_type = peap      .....  }
    tls {
#I will not go into details here as this is beyond scope of  setting up freeradisu.  The defaults will work, as freeradius comes with  generated self signed certificates.
    peap {
        default_eap_type = mschapv2
#you will have to set this to allowed the inner tls tunnel  attributes into the final accept message
        use_tunneled_reply = yes
    3.  Change the authenication and authorization modules and order.
    cd /etc/raddb/sites-enabled
    vi default
For the authorize section, uncomment the ldap module.
For the authenicate section, uncomment the ldap module
    vi inner-tunnel
Very importants, for the authorize section, ensure the ldap module is first, before mschap.  Thus authorize will look like:
    authorize
    {      ldap      mschap      ......  }
    4.  Configure ldap module
    cd /etc/raddb/modules
    ldap
    {        server=localhost       identify = "cn=Manager,dc=cisco,dc=com"        password=admin       basedn="dc=cisco,dc=com"       base_filter =  "(objectclass=radiusprofile)"       access_attr="uid"       ............   }
    5.  Start up radius in debug mode on another console
    radiusd -X
    6.  radtest localhost 12 testing123
You should get a Access-Accept back
    7.  Now to perform an EAP-PEAP test.  This will require a wpa_supplicant test libarary called eapol_test
First install openssl support libraries, required to compile
    yum install openssl*
    yum install gcc
    wget http://hostap.epitest.fi/releases/wpa_supplicant-0.6.10.tar.gz
    tar xvf wpa_supplicant-0.6.10.tar.gz
    cd wpa_supplicant-0.6.10/wpa_supplicant
    vi defconfig
    Uncomment CONFIG_EAPOL_TEST = y and save/exit
    cp defconfig .config
    make eapol_test
    cp eapol_test /usr/local/bin
    chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/eapol_test
    8.  Create a test config file named eapol_test.conf.peap
    network=
    {   eap=PEAP  eapol_flags=0  key_mgmt=IEEE8021X  identity="jonatstr"   password="ggsg"  \#If you want to verify the Server certificate the  below would be needed   \#ca_cert="/root/ca.pem"  phase2="auth=MSCAHPV2"   }
    9.  Run the test
    eapol_test -c ~/eapol_test.conf.peap -a 127.0.0.1 -p 1812 -s testing123

  • H-REAP LWAPs losing VLAN mapping when fail to secondary WLC's

    Hello,
I have three 5508 WLCs, running code 7.0.98.0 supporting 100+ LWAPs in H-REAP mode. The LWAPs are servicing 2-3 WLANs each. Some are using central authentication and local switching, some are configured for central authentication and central switching. When the LWAPs fail from one WLC to another WLC, the LWAP's lose all of their VLAN mappings and pick up the VLAN of the management interface on the new WLC.
All WLANs are configured to use the management interface on the WLC and the VLAN mappings are configured per LWAP on the H-REAP properties  tab.  The WLAN ID numbers and all the WLAN settings are the same across all 3 WLC's. I have created AP groups on all 3 WLC's and the AP group config matches across the 3 WLCs.
I can get the LWAPs to keep their VLAN mapping by creating an interface on the WLC with the VLAN ID of the locally switched/remote site VLAN and then setting the interface for the WLAN to the new interface. However, then the WLAN doesn't work, because the centrally located WLC doesn't have the remote site VLAN. It also seems to keep the VLAN mapping if I create the locally switched/remote site VLAN interface on the WLC , and point the WLAN to the management interface. This shouldn't be a necessary step though... In H-REAP with local switching, the LWAPs aren't using the interface on the WLC.
I found a note in the 7.0 WLC config guide that explains why the VLANs are picking up the management interface VLAN, but that same note says the VLAN mappings can be changed per LWAP/WLAN!
    From config guide:
For hybrid-REAP access points, the interface mapping at the controller for WLANs that is configured for H-REAP Local Switching is inherited at the access point as the default VLAN tagging. This mapping can be easily changed per SSID, per hybrid-REAP access point
Anyone using H-REAP and been able to get the LWAPs to keep the VLAN mapping when failing from one WLC to another?
    Thanks!

    Shawn,
I went back and reviewed everything and everything was duplicated , Except... WLAN_ID. The Wlan ID tags were different. I created a test and failled my two test AP's and they both came up on the backup controller with the proper vlan ID. now I know. When it was working for everyone else I was begining to wonder if I found a new bug or it was my config. This is one I wont forget ..
    Thank you

  • Vlan mapping missing from flexconnect AP

    I am having
issue with flexconnect mode AP. They are losing vlan mapping very frequently. I need to reconfigure the vlan mapping then only client starts getting IP addresses. Please let me know what may be the issue.
    AP model: AIR-CAP3602I-N-K9
    WLC model: AIR-CT5508-K9

    Vijayanand

The configuration on the controller must be the same between the time the access point went into standalone mode and the time the access point came back to connected mode. Similarly, if the access point is falling back to a secondary or backup controller, the configuration between the primary and secondary or backup controller must be the same.
You need to configure the Flex connect AP—switch --- controller , for the example to go through proper steps.

  • WLC 5508, vlan select, reserved address in external DHCP server

    Hi guys,
I have a deploy with a WLC 5508 version 7.0.116.0, APs mode local and vlan select feature enable. The issue is that the reserved IP address in external DHCP server not work. The DHCP contains a reserved IP address associates with mac address, but the assignement of IP is not match with de policies in DHCP. All others services operate normally.
This reserved assignment operate previusly to modificate the WLAN to vlan select feature. Help me to improve this situation.
    Thanks.-
    Best regards

Hello Abhishek, thanks for you quick answer....
the link was a document used for the deploy, but not especifict nothing about the reserved IP address for particular host. In other words, the reserved IP address (through MAC address) in external DHCP server not work when "vlan select" its enable.

  • Anchor mobility configuration getting lost in wlc 5508 ios code 7.4.100.0

It is observed that in WLC 5508 , ios 7.4.100.0 ,  mobility anchor configuration on wlan  is getting lost .  we configure anchor ip address on  guest wlan > mobility anchor >  Switch IP Address (Anchor).
We have configured the template on NCS 2.0 to push the anchor mobility ip address on all WLC
Has anyone oberved this behavoiur. We have more than 100 WLC  , and  everyweek  mobility anchor configuration is lost on some WLC having code  7.4.100.0.

I am having this exact same problem.  I am running 7.3 on 5508 WLC.   My remote site LAP's are using Flex (HREAP).  The initial access point that my laptop associates to connects with no problem, as soon as I wander out of range of the initial LAP and into the area of another access point, I lose data connectivity.   The was validated like the original post as I start a constant ping on the LAN and watch as the ping latency increases and then ping replies stop.  The only way to correct the problem is resetting of the wireless adapter on the laptop.  Side note my DroidX has no problem wandering from AP to AP.
    Laptop: Windows 7 32bit
I then returned to my home site and test where I have a secondary controller and the LAP's are configured for local mode, no problems roaming from access point to access point.   Validated with constant ping test.  The pings drop for a second and re-
    continues as the laptop reconnects.

  • WLC 5508 , AP client dhcp address different from WLAN interface VLAN subnet?

Hope the title makes sense, here's my situation: I have multiple businesses on 1 WLC 5508, there's a LAG to my core switch with seperate interfaces for each, broken up by vlans.
My question is: if i have a WLAN setup to use interface "Company A" which is vlan 10 with an ip of 10.0.1.5 which then points to 10.0.1.10 for dhcp.
Can the WLAN client connecting to the Company A WLAN use an IP in a different IP range?(192.168.1.10?) can the wlc route? from the perspective of the DHCP server where doers the request come from? (10.0.1.5?)
Can the DHCP server 10.0.10.10 on vlan 10 respond back with and ip on a different subnet to assign to the client to use and still be fully fonctioning? would the default gateway for the client need to be 10.0.1.5?  So the clients ip would be 192.168.1.10 /24 with a gateway of 10.0.1.5 (ip adress fo vlan10 interface on WLC) And if multiple clients on the same subnet wanted to talk to each other woudl the WLC know how to route them to each other without passing through the default gateway?
Sorry if this is confusing I'm having a bit of a hard time explaining it in works, i can try and draw somethign up if it makes more sense.
    thanks
    Eric

I think if you want these clients to stick to a WLAN configured on a VLAN that has a different IP addressing you could configure your VLAN with the normal IP addressing then add on the SVI the 2nd IP_Class_default_gateway.
    E.G.
    Vlan 10
    interface vlan 10
    ip address 10.0.10.1 255.255.255.0
    ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 secondary
Clients that receive IP address from 192.168.1.0/24 network will be able to reach 192.168.1.1 and all traffic will pass right.

I could really have benefits of VLAN select feature, but I noticed that it's not working like it should. Two interfaces are in Interface group, but from 45 clients only few of them has IP address from one subnet, others have from second sub.
I see requirements for this to work is 32 MB of flash on LWAP devices..I only have 16 MB..
Is there a way to work this thing out? upgrade of flash on devices or something ?
Thank you in advance and kind regards..
    Lovro

Thx L - as usual, I need to read before speaking
Interesting topic though.  I would assume that the MAC hashing algorithm used would be similar to how etherchannel maintaines load balancing (src-dst) etc..  What I don't quite understand is the definition of "dirty".  What makes an interface "dirty"?  Given the flow chart depicted in the link you sent, I'm wondering how the interface assignments are kept in te switch.  I'm assuming you create the interfaces, create the interface group, assign the interfaces to the group and finally assign the interface group to the WLAN.  During all this time, how are the stations using that WLAN being handled?  Almost should clear everything out, create the group tied to the wlan, THEN join the stations one at a time and see what interface they get assigned to.  At that point it should be balanced.  Also, it's my understanding that those stations should keep their assigned interface the next time they connect unless there is a "dirty" condition which I don't quite understand yet.
Anyway - rambling now.  Loking forward to your test results.  Thx again! //art

  • FlexConnect VLAN mapping management

How to manage larger amout of FlexConnect APs? Especialy VLAN mapping, which is saved separately in each AP. I would like to have a list of AP-WLAN-VLAN settings. Is there any CLI command (except show run-config) for it? And what about backup of this setting? How to restore it in case of an AP crash?
    Many thanks.
