Lot of swaps Occuring

Hi Experts
We have ECC 6.0 which was upgraded from 4.6c. Everthing went on smooth, except for a major performance issue. Initially when i came into this project i tried a lot of steps like increasing the swap space and stuff where the hit ratio was set due to the change.
Now the issue is that there a lot of swaps occuring and i really do not know where to go from here.i already increased the swap space by around 200MB. Please do advise me on what to do. Generally wht is the best procedure to follow when there are a lot of swaps occuring.
Thanks in advance.

Recommedn you to configure at least 20 gigabytes of swap space in 64-bit systems. (Plus approx. 10 GB for every additional 64-bit instance on the same computer).
Go through these notes for the recommendations

We are having problem in one our of non- production environments where the GWTDOMAIN is using lots of swap space and not releasing them. It got so bad that the swap space used was 100% and we had to "kill -9" this GWTDOMAIN and bounce it again to to release this space. Is this a known bug and if not what can I do to resolve this problem
or do we need to open a trouble ticket with BEA to fix.

  • How to find which sql or process that is causing lots of swap space

    Hello,
There is a lot of swap space going on constantly. The SGA is 18gigs and PGA is 2 gigs. The swap space is 19gigs. How to find which processes or sql statements that are using a lot of sga and paging? The database is 10.1.0.5. and the tool OEM 10g. Thank you in advance.

v$sort_usage or v$temp_segusage give temporary tablespace usage.
To get PGA memory by session, you could use insteadv$process.

  • I regularly use Firefox and noticed lately that it is using a large amount of memory....sometimes up to 500 mb in a session. In addition, it's been slower and tends to hang up a lot. This occurred both before and after updating to the newest version.

I don't really know what else to detail. What would you like or need to know?

    hello
you will find some help here : [Online help about buffers|http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/EN/c4/3a6e98505211d189550000e829fbbd/frameset.htm]
"When a buffer has insufficient freespace or free directories, it has to swap objects out of the buffer in order to load a new object. The column Swap shows how many objects have been swapped out since system startup."
This means that you have to increase the size of the buffer to avoid swapping.
To find the relevant parameter (in RZ10) for a specific buffer => transaction ST02, double click on the buffer and then click on the button "Current parameters". Here is/are the parameter(s) to increase (be careful of some parameters ... your system can crash or not restart !)
After saving & activating the profile in RZ10, perform at os level the command (under <sid>adm) : sappfpar check to fix the memory problems.
    Hope this will help you

  • Swaps in PXA Buffer (abap buffersizw)

    Hi Experts
In my production server lot of swaps in PXA buffers, yesterday only I increased PXA buffer size 240000 to 270000, but still I am getting swaps in that PXA Buffer (ABAP/BufferSize), any body give the how much memory I have to increase to that respective buffers, what is the solution to over come  this swap problems in PXA buffer
    Best Regards
    Mohammed. Khan

    Hello,
Increasing the size of buffer swap space depend on hardware configuration of your system.
First check how much total paging space is allocated in your system.
Depending on your hardware configuration you can increase size of  buffers.
you can check current value & SAP default value in your system...
check system load in your system. Sometimes due to more load swapping occurs...
If this continuously happens you need to check for all buffers.
You can check in ST02, which buffers are causing more swaps...
    take action acc to that...

  • Which Process using high Swap

    Dear All,
Any specific command or steps to find which process consuming lot of swap space and there is any specific step to reduce the usage without kill the actual process.
    Regards,
    Siva

    prstat -s size
..gives you a list of processes sorted on their memory consumption. The swap and memory are tightly connected in a virtual-memory structure, which means that i don't think you can tell exactly how much of a process which is swapped out and how much which is in RAM.
The RSS column of the prstat output shows how much which is residential, that part is for sure in the RAM, the rest may or may not be swapped out.
You can not reduce the amount of swap used by a process (i'ld guess that you probably could force it into the RAM, but thats probably not what you want), but if swap size is an issue, you can add space to the swap easily by using swap -a on a file or device.

  • ST02 SWAPS reported what does that mean.

    Hi Team,
In ST02 of one of the system all the apps I see many SWAPS column with value and in red color, what it mean
    program, swaps with 11,349
    generic key with 68
    single record with 1,002
    Thanks
    Vijay

    Hi,
ST02 is the buffer monitor that offers instance specific information that provides:
    1. status of different buffers instance wise
    2. information on memory usage instance wise
    3. information on table buffering at instance level
Swapping takes place for two reasons:
    1. not enough 'free space left' in buffer for buffering new objects
    2. buffer has run ouf of 'free directory entries' that can be contained in one buffer area *
Directory entries diminish the available size of the buffer, independent of their usage.
Swaps are to be avoided, as are all other situations leading to lines shown in red in the ST02 display.
Please note that Buffer swaps occur when buffer content is deleted from the buffer and is replaced by other content. It has no relation at all to the swapping mechanism on OS level.
An example with a more practical outlook to swapping observed:
Use transactions SM50, ST03N and ST02 to identify the problem.
    a. Using SM50 you might find high number of work processes accessing tables related to ABAP sources and status as 'Load Program'. This hints to a problem with Program [PXA] buffer.
    b. In transaction ST03N, you find unusually high 'load and generation time' causing even higher wait times. Threshold for load and generation time is typically 50 ms.
    c. In buffer monitor i.e. ST02, you find many swaps [typically more than 10000 swaps happening per day for program buffer]. Check on hit ratio [value below 95% is typically poor]. This indicates problem. Program buffer could be small!!
If program buffer is small, it means that workprocesses require to reload program loads over and over again which causes bad system performance.
Resolution: Increase program buffer size/ check on load and generation times/ hit-ratio increases/ system response time also lowers down!! : )

    Shabnam.

  • Swap size keeps dropping on Solaris 10 (x86)

    Hi,
I have setup Solaris 10 (x86) on a SunFire V20Z, and mirrored my 2 hds.
    raidctl c1t0d0 c1t1d0
recently i have been getting system messages that says
WARNING: /tmp: File system full, swap space limit exceeded
when i checked, I noticed that my swap size has dropped. I had setup c1t0d0s1 for swap (2GB).
When i reboot, the system will show the swap as correct, but it will start dropping over a period of time
    bash-3.00# swap -l
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s1 28,65 8 4193272 4193272
    bash-3.00# swap -s
    total: 565248k bytes allocated + 933124k reserved = 1498372k used, 2280600k available
    The next day when i check again;
    -bash-3.00$ swap -l
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s1 28,65 8 4193272 4193272
    -bash-3.00$ swap -s
    total: 1344296k bytes allocated + 1676016k reserved = 3020312k used, 642752k available
I have just rebooted my system again because my /tmp has dropped to 8.3MB
    swap 8.3MB 4.0K 8.3MB 1% /tmp
    My /tmp mount in vfstab shows;
    swap - /tmp tmpfs - yes -
    Any help?

Well, /tmp and swap are tightly connected to eachother, since its basicly the same thing.
Hence, when you allocate space in /tmp, the amount of available swap will drop, in the same way the amount of space available in /tmp will drop if a lot of swap has been allocated by processes running on the system.
swap -s will show you the amount of unallocated (or free) swap, that it shrinks over time is perfectly normal on most systems, however its not really normal that applications allocates that much swap on a short time.
    I suspect that you have an application running on your system which is eating a lot of memory and hence using up your swap space, so next time this problem occour, i'ld run the following;
    prstat -a -s size
This will give a list of processes running on the system, and sort them by how much virtual memory they have allocated.
Funny thing; i tested the command above on a S10 server, and found that nfsmapid had allocated about 400 mb. And i'm not even using NFSv4.. smells memory leak.
Hope this explaination is somewhat clear ;)

  • How to understand buffer swaps

In SAP training materials, it says that buffer swaps occur when buffer content is deleted from the buffer and is replaced by other content. It's no relation at all to the swapping mechanism on OS level.
I am confused about the source and target of buffer swaps. For example, when buffer swaps occur on program buffer(PXA), where will the data in program buffer be put, physical memory?, and where does new data come from? SAP buffers locate on share memory, belong to virtual memory, but virtual memory is the summary of physical memory and OS swap space(or OS paging file). I just remember that extended memory resides on physical memory, don't know whether sap buffers reside on physical too.
For swapping on OS level, I think it's page exchange between physical memory and swap space which locates on disk. Is it right?
Please advise on how to understand buffer swaps and OS swapping. Thanks so much.

  • SWAP space on AIX

    Hi all,
I have prod and test on the same server on AIX 5.3 box. And application is 11i. It's not a good config but thats the way it is here. And for the last 6 months or so we are getting PGSP_KILL error in AIX log files. My server RAM is 8GB and as per Metalink docs, i first set SWAP SPACE to 0.75 times the RAM but still the same problem. Now i have set SWAP SIZE to same size of RAM(8GB). Still getting the same problem mainly when copying files to tape or taking cold backup. After this happens we get famouus FRM-92050 Failed to connect to server: xxxx.xxxx:9000. ans users can't login.
I have gone thru many metalink docs. But plz recommend me to as what swap size should i set. Or find the offending process which is taking more resources. In errpt is shows FNDLIBR is process which is consuming lot of swap space. But i dont know what to do now.

  • 27" 2010 iMac 16gb RAM...still swapping?

I upgraded my 27" 2010 iMac (quad core i7) to 16gb RAM, and some things are a bit faster e.g. photoshop.  But perhaps it wasn't the noticeable speed boost I was expecting.  Also, I can definitely hear a lot of swapping out to virtual memory happening at times.  On startup it happens a lot.  I can't believe it's going beyond 16gb in terms of memory requirements just to start up.  The "About this mac" info panel shows that it has definitely recognised all 16gb memory.
Am I imagining things re the swapping?  Do I have anything to be concerned about?  What tests can I do to ensure that this is as fast as it should be and that it's not dodgy hardware or something?  Any comments appreciated.
    cheers,
    Ian

So should i again increae it. also i read somewhere that increasing too much program buffer area willl lead to buffer fragmentation .
