Low Processor Utilization

Hi,
I am trying to write code that does a little bit of array manipulation and some simple trig to do something fairly time critical. I noticed that the processor utilization on my machine was awfully low, never really exceeding 50%. Perplexed, I tried to write some very simple code (an infinitely run while loop doing some simple math to the iteration counter) and ran that. Even with this simple code, the processor utilization did not improve. As stated before, I'm trying to write something fairly time critical, so the higher utilization, the better.
The computer I'm running this code on is admittedly not the top of the line - an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM. However, I'm fairly limited in my choice of hardware (note that memory utilization is no where close to pegged, either - with my code, and the simple loop).
Is there anything I can do to increase utilization? I've tried turning debugging off, with limited luck.
Thank you.

Well, 50% is within a factor of two of the max you can possibly get and that's not bad. .
In terms of math, that atom of course sucks. While it is hyperthreaded, it only has a single core and a very small cache (the advantage is that it only uses 2W of power). Trying to maximize CPU usage if of course the wrong approach. You might be able ot speed the time critical computations up by a factor of 10 by using a better algorithm.
What is the exact OS version? Can you get it to 100% CPU if you run two parallel while loops without waits?
I agree with Lynn, show us some code....
LabVIEW Champion . Do more with less code and in less time .

  • X121e ThinkPad Windows Experince Index. Low processor score.

I have got a X121e Thinkpad, the i3 2367M processor version. With the laptop plugged into the mains with the 6cell  battery removed I ranthe Windows Experince Index. The score I got for the processor was just 3.4 other users have reported theirs to be much higher. Why is my score so low, only had this machine a week. I was told it could be because I was using the laptop with the battery removed, could this be the issue? I had a different brand of laptop before and it never affected it so I had to ask.

Without the battery, and running off the 65W AC adapter only your thinkpad will automatically clock down your CPU. If you run the test again with the battery with or without the charger your score will be around 5.2.
The answer can be found here..http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/ThinkPad-CPU-runs-at-reduced-maximum-clock-spe...
If you wish to have maximum CPU clock speed without the battery fitted you will need a 90W AC adapter. I bought an original Lenovo one off fleabay for 19 quid. Job done.

  • Premiere Elements 8 - Low Processor Usage

    Hello,
I am running Premiere Elements 8.  I have put together a video of HD footage, and am "burning" a DVD folder to my HDD.  During the "Encoding Media" process, it is only using MAX 50% of my processor.  I have a Core2Quad processor @ 2.33GHz with 4GB of RAM.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have a 640GB system drive, and a 1TB drive(on a PCI SATA card, that seems to run quite fast) that I use for my media.  I would really appreciate it using all of my CPU, as it takes a whole day to render 1 1/2 hours of HD video.  Is there any reason why this would be?   It seems to do it either with or without any other programs running.
    Any answers would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Austin
Screenshots of my Task Manager during HD video "Encoding Media" process:

When you launch PrE, and look at the Splash Screen, does it recognize the multi-core processor?
Also, much of Transcoding is I/O intensive, as files are written to, and read from the HDD's, so the processor could be waiting for that operation to take place.
Unfortunately, I have never seen a benchmarking program for PrE, as there is for PrPro, where one can test their entire system, and find where the exact bottlenecks are. That would be great, if only...
Good luck, and maybe others will have some tips, insight or maybe cures for the Transcode times.

  • Processor utilization with DAQCard

I have an application that is based on the Labview 6.1 cont acq to file example.
I have a DAQCard –16XE-50 PC Card acquisition card. When I run the program, CPU utilization increases to 99% and other programs are sluggish. How can I tell what mode the acquisition is using (polling or interrupt based- I know the card has no DMA). I am looking to acquire signals in the 1-10 kHz range. Do I need to go to a different system (IEEE?) for portable use so I can do data acquisition and still have processor time available?

    Hello John,
Your problem might be that the AI Read.vi is blocking while waiting for data to arrive. Here's a test you can try. Run the Cont Acq&Chart (Async Occurrence).vi and check your CPU clock while it runs. This example doesn't read until the data has arrived.
There is another trick you can try which might be more easily integrated into your application. Put your AI Read.vi inside another loop and set the "number of scans to read" to zero (from a shift register). You might also need a small loop delay to free up your processor. Each time the AI Read.vi is called, monitor the "scan backlog" until you see there are at least the number of points you want to read. Then the next time through the loop, set "number of scans to read" to the number you
    want.
    Best Regards,
    Doug

  • Control center 3d mark 11 lower processor speed

3d mark 11 results show that the processor speed is actually 2900 mhz as opposed to what is set in that terrible control center thing, which is 4.3ghz its a 8320 with a 990xa gd55 (oh the regrets)
    Any ideas?

You need to give more info.   Download HWiNFO32 or 64 and tell us the CPU wattage and voltage your using as well as temps.  The more info you give the Better assistance we can give you.
Sounds like you're throttling due to high temps, over your TDP(watts) , too much voltage or too high a clock will cause these.
With my FX8350 at 4.6 I get up to 60 watts. At 4.8 it nearly doubles to 112 watts.  4.8 on mine would definitely throttle and I would get the results you're getting.

  • Low processor usage

Can anyone explain why my Mac doesn't use upwards of 100% of the CPU when I am encoding from FCP? Just sits around 50%
Mac Pro 3 GHz 8 Core
    6 GB RAM
    300 GB HD

As David notes, compressor can utilize multiple cores BUT, you do have to create a virtual cluster (multiple instances of the program running simultaneously) to take full advantage all 8 of them.

    I recently bought the

You got what was advertised, I don't see what the problem is.
Do note that Best Buy usually carries Best Buy-exclusive models.  These variants often have differences from the "standard" model carried elsewhere, usually to make the unit a bit cheaper (For example, a year ago the G51vx-RBBX05 was the only Asus G51 series without a 1080p display - it was also the only one available for $1000 instead of $1200+).  In some cases it may be a lower spec in one area (CPU) and a higher spec in another with the same price.

  • G5 only recognizes 1 processor

I bought some g5s' recently and when i opened one of them the lower processor was ajar. upon further review i noticed it had been worked on looks like a new logic board has been put in it ( it has a sticker for a new ethernet id). I can run it with the lower cpu out runs fine, swap them runs fine seems both cpus are fine. i have tiger running on it runs good just fans are wide open all the time and it only sees one cpu. Any help would be appreciated. I cant find anyone else with this problem. BTW it is a 1.8 ghz dual g5. only other problem is that it will not wake from sleep.

There is a thread on these 'missing processor' issues on the same page as your post!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8391812#8391812
Anyway, your fans are on full because you have switched processors in the logic board sockets. You must run a 'thermal calibration' after replacing or switching processors, otherwise the fans go on full blast because the controllers don't know how the processors respond to temperatures under various loads.
You need the Service CD to be able to do this. There is more details in the thread above, or try googling for info on switching processors on a G5.
In all honesty it sounds like it is failing like my G5 (details in the mentioned post).

  • G5 Processor replace questions...

    Hello all,
I have a early 05 build G5, and after I power up, after 20 - 30 mins the fans kick into overdrive and the comp freezes. I took it to apple yesterday and was told that more than likely it was the processor, which is a common problem with this model. He also said it may be the logic board too.
My question is, i have a 2.0ghz processor that i guess i need to replace, can i replace it with a higher processor compatible with my model? Say a 2.3ghz. And how difficult is it to replace a processor yourself?
    All feedback is greatly appreciated....

If you thrash around ebay you will find some cpu's for $100-$200 and some used G5s for $300-$500+. There are also several companies replacing G5 CPUs for around $500. You've got to get a compatible CPU which will require 3 of the last 4 letters of the part number printed on the CPU. Whether it's all worth it is up to you. Here's a take apart guide: http://macinzebox.blogspot.com/2008/07/apple-service-source-manuals.html
Note that if you do decide to trade out a cpu, you (or Apple certified tech) will need to run the Apple Service Diagnostic 2.5.8 to calibrate the fans.
My machine did the same thing as yours, went to apple etc. - same diagnosis. I was able to turn off the lower (bad) CPU with open firmware commands and now it's running on 1 processor. I did remove and replace the lower processor (re-seat), it was a little intimidating, but not difficult.

  • What is your Review of the 928

A User Review on the Nokia Lumia 928.
Got my Nokia 928 a few days ago. First, overall the phone is GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone. IMO it is the Best Windows Phone to date. I will also say that in comparison to the other Operating System’s; Android and iOS, Windows Phone 8 OS is better and faster in my opinion. Of course that is Subjective. Everyone has his or her preference as to the features, apps, size, style, color and specs of a phone that work for them and that’s just fine. My sister likes the iphone 5 and it works just fine for here. My younger brother likes Android ICS and it works fine for him. The point is, I nor anyone else has to convince each person that they should buy a particular Phone. Having said that this is just a review for anyone not sure of Windows Phone 8.
    The Pros and the Cons.
    Pros:
    1.      The Operating System: The Windows Phone 8 OS is
smooth fast and responsive. It runs faster on a lower processor than a newer Android’s faster quad processor. The point is, it doesn’t have to have 4 or more processors to run smoother and faster. Though I have not had it longer the 8 days as of this review I nor the persons I know who have a WP8, have not experienced the lags, bugs and many reboots I have had with Android Phones and Tablets.  I didn’t like the Windows Tiles when I first heard or seen them in pictures, but expect for the plain colors (you eventually get use to them) they work great. The Live Tiles update you on all the info you need on one screen without having to click on a bunch of different apps Mail, Facebook, Weather, Agenda, Calender, Messaging are all updated right on the front screen. You can customize the look, size, color of your Tiles and change them with ease.
    2.      The Camera: This has to be one of the best cameras on a Phone. You will not be disappoint on the pictures it takes in daylight or low light. Nokia is hyping up this Camera and I have to agree. The Camera alone is a good reason to get this phone.
    3.       Call Quality is good: Both calling and receiving. The speaker on it is loud and clear.
    4.      The Display is great with the AMOLED Display. It makes the screen sharp and clear and great even it sunlight. The Size at 4.5 inches is also a nice size, not too big and not too small.
    5.      Xenon Flash: Brighter and better Flash as found on some standalone cameras.
    6.      HD 1080p recording with great noise canceling mics. Also has front Facing 1.2MP camera.
    7.      32 GB internal storage
    8.      4G Network: I haven’t had the chance to fully test it yet, but my pages load super-fast and my downloads are fast as well.
    9.      Battery: Battery usage for a smartphone is Good. It also has wireless charging.
    10.   APPS: There is a lot of criticism with this OS and lack of apps. This area is where people have to put things in the right
prospective. Yes iOS and Android has more Apps than WP8. I have to laugh a little when this argument is brought up. First who downloads that many apps? Second putting thing in the right prospective, iOS and Android is 5years old. Developers have had plenty of time to make apps. Windows Phone is going on 3years old with Window Phone 8 being only 6 months old with over 145,000 to date. Most of the top apps or equivalent is available right now on the WP store, with more being added as the months go buy. The point is, it took both Android and Apple years to get to the app count they have now. Besides most of the apps on those system or useless apps that don’t say on a phone for long yet alone even make it to ones phone. Again my point is most of the main or equivalent apps that people use are either on the store or in development. If Windows Phone 8 sells great(and I think it will) more apps will come faster. Anyway Nokia has a set of apps that make this phone stand out itself, Nokia Music, Nokia City Lens: Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive. There are plenty of other apps that make this a great pick.
    Cons:
    1.      No External Storage. I think Nokia made a mistake here. Even though it has an internal 32 gig storage( 23G usable) they should have made room for external storage. I like having my music, videos and some data on a storage card so I am not tied to a computer or downloading data on a cell or wifi. I almost didn’t get the phone because if this.
    2.      No removable battery. I am a heavy user, both personal and work. I like having a couple of charged batteries to throw in when I just can’t charge.
    3.      Lack of Apps? I put this here because in comparison to the other two OS’s, WP8 does have less apps, however I think I make a good point above as to why this is not a good reason to not buy this Phone.
    4.      No FM Radio: other Nokia Phones have the radio turned on. Though I heard that it can be turned on in a firmware update.
    5.      No Etiquette: My own personal preference; a feature that mutes the phone when you face it down.
    6.      Wish it had a stylus for notes: My own personal preference
    7.      No Swype Keyboard: My own personal preference
    8.      Unless I am wrong, No Video output to TV.
Ok so for what it is worth, this is just an opinion for a user and not a article writer, and Yes I have had both Android and Iphone.

Reviews? (not saying yours is one of em). YELP just announced some big  lawsuits vs groups posting glowing product reviews on their web site.  YELP isn't the only one with that issue On this site Ive seen glowing   post on top of glowing post for a phone that's still in pre order stage  unless you can get one in a store; verbage same review after review,I mention that because I relied on those  reviews to buy the 928 from another site and I'm satisfied those reviews  were pure fiction. Phone hadn't even been out very long, page after page of  glowing reviews
I'm glad its working out for you That phone takes great photos . The rest is all marketing. What apps? Downloaded Mapquest's 4 star rated "voice activated, turn by turn" nav app that adjusts with drivers route. Does none of those things. Got lost 30 miles waiting for it to do so. 2 emails to Maquest "customer service" went unanswered You'll never see a company like Mapquest "marketing" apps that way on Google play or Apple store, no way. Those 170,000 windows store apps are just another page out of the MS "marketing" playbook. Go to a windows mobile forum and look under bugs and defects tab for the 928; page after page of battery life, audio, text, random freezes, update, storage issue for a Lumia phone that owns a 5% share of the total windows mobile market share which stands at bout 3%????? When I had either a nav or music app on I was getting 11% battery drainage rates per 19 minutes. Guess it all depends what you call power user. And I wasn't the only one with that issue.Phone is marketed as 17 hrs continuous usage and 24 standby on one charge. Yeah if you make a few phone calls and take some photos. I returned my 928 2 factory resets, bottomless pit of soft ones and one failed back up later, that phone is all marketing.
PS. Vz's  much awaited flagship 928 windows phone came out in mid may. By mid august "flagship" was selling for free with 2 yr. All marketing. WP8 and I used it for 30 days is one BUGGY platform and that's not an opinion

  • Which Macbook Pro 15" to get?

Hi, I've been thinking about buying a new Macbook Pro for a while now, as I've been getting tired of my Windows machine, and I plan on going to University next year, I thought it'd be nice to have time to get used to using one.
Basically, I have decided that I want a 15" Macbook Pro, but not which processor speed. (I have customised them to give them Hi-Res screens and at least a 500GB HD).
I would also like to say that I am aware it is cheaper to buy RAM from external companies but I'd prefer to get it straight from Apple.
    *Setup 1:*
    +Intel Core i5 2.4GHz Processor+
    +8GB RAM+
    +500GB HD+
    +256MB NVIDIA Graphics+
    +Hi-Res Screen+
    +Total Cost:+ £1979
    *Setup 2:*
    +Intel Core i5 2.53GHz Processor+
    +8GB RAM+
    +500GB HD+
    +256MB NVIDIA Graphics+
    +Hi-Res Screen+
    +Total Cost:+ £2050
    *Setup 3:*
    +Intel Core i5 2.66GHz Processor+
    +4GB RAM+
    +500GB HD+
    +512MB NVIDIA Graphics+
    +Hi-Res Screen+
    +Total Cost:+ £1879 +(£2199 with 8GB RAM)+
I know a fair bit about computers, and I'm going to be doing an IT based course at Uni, so I want a decent computer. I know you can get better spec laptops/desktops including iMacs for cheaper but I really want a Macbook.
Basically what I'm asking is do you think it would be worth getting the 8GB RAM on the lower processor speed models, and what sort of a difference would the 512MB Graphics memory make compared to the 256MB one.
Also, if you think it would be worth paying £2199 for 8GB on the best spec one.
If you have read all of this so far, then, well, thank you, and please post even if it's a sentence.
    Thanks for reading!
Edit: Sorry if this is in the wrong place I didn't really know where to post it.

I have an i7 2.66 with hi-res screen in front of me and I just can't take my eyes off of it
I would recommend you do the same if you can afford it ..why ??
Well 512MB Nvidia 330m is a nice difference for starters ..if you imagine how HD technology and games are evolving everyday ..
i7 is a true beast and when you invest you should invest something good for a while ..
I have 4GB ram on my machine and unless you deal with movie editing etc. swapping GB files around all the time you will be more than fine with that amount ..
my 2 pennies goes to i7 2.66 15" 4GB with Hi-Res display that's my machine (oh and I also have an SSD :p)

  • G5 won't boot.  White LED lights when power button is pushed, click heard.

Unlike some other non-booting G5 stories, mine never makes it past this stage. It's a dual 1.8ghz G5 powermac.
The white LED above the power button turns on when the power button is pressed, a click is heard, but it does not go any further. The LED does not flash at all... no grey screen, no hard-drive access, nada.
When I push the power button with the aluminum side removed (but with the transparent insert in place), I can see the fans twitch like they are going to start spinning, but then immediately stop.
I've tried resetting the PMU, replacing the PRAM(CMOS) battery, another identical type of video card, blowing out the dust with compressed air, removing and swapping memory, but always get this same result.
There was some renovation done in the house recently, but the machine was gently wrapped and moved away from the work. However after 2 weeks of sitting there, it now won't start.
Any help is appreciated. If the 'clicking' of the power supply is being heard (also clicks when I plug in the power cord), does that mean the power supply is likely working? In which case, is it likely a logic board issue?
One thing I noticed upon closer inspection, after removing the main fan, is that the higher processor seems darker than the lower one. Is there a way to remove one processor to test for hardware failure?

    Hi subculture,
A power supply is not to difficult to replace. The lower processor must be removed. It is much easier to lay the Mac on its side. A used power supply can be found on ebay. There are 2 main power connector that connect to the logic board. Those can be tested with a DC voltage meter against a pinout chart for your particular model and can be found on google.

  • ITunes movie freezes and skips with VGA out to projector

    Hi,
I have rented several movies on iTunes and can watch them onscreen no problem. When I used the VGA dongle to source the screen to an external projector, however, the movie gradually began to skip and freeze, with up to half a second pause between frame updates. Rebooting did not change this; however, after pulling out the adapter and just watching it onscreen, the movie was fine.
Has anyone else had this problem? And any idea what I can do about it?

this is probably because of the low processor, and integrated graphics. the Macbook pro has a graphics card that helps process the images, while the MBA relies on the processor to control graphics.
The video isn't smooth because of the slow processor.

  • Duke Nukem 3d and G1 iPod touch

Does any one else have this same problem. When you go to buy the game it states that you cannot buy it due to the requirement of a microphone. When I played Duke Nukem 3d on my PC I don't remember that there was a microphone function. If any one knows a workaround or works for apple or the company can tell me why it needs a mic that would be awesome. This is an awesome game that I would love to play and spend my money on. Thanks for the help

That is odd. I would have thought the low processor speed of the 1st Gen could be a significant issue for a game like this but not a microphone.

  • Buying old imac g4 - price?

    Hello there,
Wondering how I can find out how much I should pay for an iMac g4 17" ?
It has been treated well as far as I know, the owner is a friend. It has been sitting in a box a lot and I will get a chance to test it first.
Wondering what tests I might do and how to check it out and determine a value.
    Thanks,
    Al

My first iMac G4 1.25GHz 17" computer with airport extreme card, speakers,
larger pro keyboard, mouse, wires, book and OS X were bought direct from
Apple online some years ago as a Special Deals item, after the iMac G5 was
available and most stores no longer had any iMac G4s. I still have that one.
The deal from a local Craigslist seller, who coincidentally worked at a retail
authorized Mac reseller but knows almost nothing technical, sells a few he
gets from people from his rented residence in the larger town up the road.
The one computer was set up and working fine, it appeared, when I finally
connected with the person and could see the computer. It was running 10.5.
but there were no discs included with the sale at all. Offers of one, were on
a contingency of me paying more - and I have an unused 10.5 retail disc...
{Instead I wiped the hard drive and installed Tiger 10.4.11 on that, since I
could then compare the activities in the questioned yet working iMac G4
based on the one I already owned that I know has been running OK. And
I also have most upgrade files for Tiger including Java & what not, saved.
    I don't have to download same repeatedly to update 2+ 10.4 systems.}
...I said no. He told me he had a box for the computer, but in order to get that,
(last November, when it was sub-zero) I had to take the computer already in
side that box. It did not function correctly. I talked him down on the price from
    $450. and then put the good computer in the box where the poor one was;
so as to transport the functional one with its accessories, in the cold weather.
So, the spare computer with apparent logic board issue (won't go past white
screen with Apple icon, sometimes does briefly, then kernel panics at some
point, occasionally, then won't boot to white at all, nothing. Then if I reset the
PMU button - under bottom metal plate, hidden under plastic in there - it will
start and give me the white screen with Apple icon, sometimes a spinning
spoke wheel; then nothing, or a kernel panic until the next PMU reset. I have
not taken that computer apart to see what it has for a hard disk drive or RAM.
If you don't mind paying shipping, you can get iMac G4s from companies who
repair and resell them with a limited guarantee; however any adjustment does
require you to mail or ship the unit back. Some companies won't honor such a
guarantee if they think you live too far away; & won't let a local tech fix it under
their alleged warranty period. I see wegenermedia.com has a few listed. The
accessories cost extra, as would an OS X retail boot installer disc, I'd guess.
These can be fun, but try to find the service manual (a technical document)
not usually something a consumer would have, if you get more than two of
these computers and start messing around. They are a bit of work and do
require some detailed steps to be performed correctly to even upgrade the
internal factory-installed RAM or replace the hard drive, or optical drive.
    The later USB2.0 iMac 15" computer is different than the earlier 15" iMac G4;
so to compare the specifications, see the free download database from
http://mactracker.ca and check into the iMac G4 series (among others.)
The first 17" iMac G4 was USB1.1 and a lower processor series, later
versions and different builds have other hardware options. The early 17"
was the first with a Superdrive and it had an 800MHz processor. I gave
one of these away to a friend a few months ago, and it was like new.
Have fun, even if it isn't pleasant work.
    Good luck & happy computing!
