Lowering fan speed on laptop with Intel chipset

I have a laptop running with Intel i7-2630QM. I know my laptop had worse-than-expected battery life, but I never realized how bad until I installed powertop. Turns out I'm idling at 29W(!). This is even after enabling pcie_aspm=force and the related boot arguments that supposedly improve battery life in Intel laptops.
I think a big part of the problem is my fan, as my laptop has always been particularly noisy. However, I can't figure out which chipset I should be modifying in sensors.conf.
Output of sensors:
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +57.0°C (crit = +120.0°C)
temp2: +55.0°C (crit = +127.0°C)
radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +55.0°C
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +58.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +53.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +52.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +55.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +54.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Compared with my friends' laptops, I expected to see a line that corresponds to my chipset, but I don't - what line(s) should I expect to modify?

Okay, I've half-solved the issue - I turned off the radeon card, and my idle temperature dropped by about 10 degrees. I'm idling at about 18 W now, so I get about an extra hour of battery life (~3 hours). That said, since I could get about 5 in Windows on this computer, I think there's still some room for improvement, especially since the fan is still a bit noisy. (I can't measure it exactly, but to my ear, it sounds like it's running too high given my low temperature of ~45 degrees).
I'm assuming the fan is the number one power draw at this point, so is there any other way that I can get it down without pwm?

  • [ANSWERED] Fan speed on HD4890 with open source ATI drivers?

    Hi everyone.
Is it possible to control the fan speed of my HD4890 card with the opensource ATI drivers (xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeonhd)?
My HD4890 fan is really loud with both for no apparent reason (the temp is not THAT high). The fan is silent with the fglrx driver as well as on Windows 7.

Sorry to dig that out. It's possible now.
You need the xf86-video-ati-git from aur.
Add the two options in xorg.conf to your device section
    Option "ForceLowPowerMode" "true"
    Option "DynamicPM" "true"
If you have the git drivers installed you can check the man page for what exactly this two options do. With the xf86-video-ati my fan was always blowing at 100%, which is quite annoying especially for a laptop.
With this two options from the git driver it is better. Not as silent as on windows but much better than before.
I don't know what happens, when it gets suddenly load, from a game or something though.

  • Bootcamp 2.0 freezes on install with intel chipset problem solved.

After Days of pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my Windows XP SP2 32 bit would never complete its bootcamp install on Windows. I found the solution to my issue. It may help you. So I decided to post this because I looked everywhere and could not find any solutions that worked. It would freeze on the step where intel chipset would install. You get the blue screen and if you tried to start windows you would get a missing file report and would have to repair. system32\drivers\pci.sys Well nothing worked but one thing. I have a HD protool system that uses 3 PCI-e cards in my Mac Pro. You have to remove any extraneaous cards in your Mac Pro (PCI-e) first then you may install bootcamp 2.0 without any issues.
Hope this helps someone. Because I wish I would have had this info before struggling for 72 hours trying to figure out my issues.
Also, don't have any extra usb , firewall connections during install. And if you have 2 drives. Either disable one. Or put another Windows Xp disc on the 2nd drive. Then the Windows install will work fine. And for me. I had to format NTSF. FAT32 wouldn't work. Not the "QUICK" normal NTSF.
    Cheers.

  • Mac Mini fan speed shoots up with GPU use

    Hello.
I have a 1.83 C2D mini that's recently been giving me problems. I opened it up to install a new airport card (having separate issues with that!) and at some point my fan started acting up. The mini was always dead quiet. Now, anytime I do something GPU intensive the fan shoots up to 4500-5500 RPM (tested with smcfancontrol).
    Here are some examples...
Browsing the internet in safari is normal, 1500-2000 fan speed.
Streaming a movie over my local network from a server through quicktime, ~3100 RPM
Begin watching a video on youtube or running a program like plex or xbmc, the fan goes nuts between 4k-5500 rpm.
If I exit and go back to internet browsing it will slowly come down.
Before anyone asks, I'm on a fresh install of snow leopard right now with same issues, I tried the SMC reset a few times, and I definitely connected the fan wire when I put the mini back together.
Can anyone help me out with suggestions as to what I did or how to fix this? This mini is basically unusable now for my htpc!
    Thanks!

Hi, I have a similar problem. My Mini is from 2005. I will be working online and all of a sudden the fan speed goes waaay up (I make sure to keep the air intake slots cleaned weekly), my connection ends, the screen goes dark (black) and after bringing the screen back into view a few times (clicking the mouse), the computer will shut down. OR maybe it is the Mac running at hyper speed and not the fan.
As I am basically computer illiterate, I have no idea what causes it. I have slower than molasses dial-up and can't even get my AOL to work right anymore.
I had that "Finder" blinking problem after upgrading to this last OSX version, finally got that fixed.
After that fix about a year ago) , my computer ran better. I noticed (for the first time since I got this Mini) that I had an "alias" HD in my home/users folder. Not sure how it got there OR how I recently lost it, but seems I can't figure out how to get it back. Not sure if that is the problem.
Sorry if you don't understand my post, but it's part of my computer stupidity coming out. lol Sure this sure be "parted-out" into several categories
    ok... help please?
    Thanks in advance..... Murphy

  • Using Media player with Intel chipsets...

Does anyone know of a download that would allow me to use WMP with with an Intel chipset?

VLC and MPlayer both will support WMV on Intel, but i don't think they support WMV3 yet (thats the one made by WMP9), they both support WMV3 on intel Linux and they are working to port it to OS X (i don't think its working yet, but i could be wrong)

  • Flash crashes Windows 7 Pro 64 bit IE11. Lenovo X301 laptop with Intel Graphics. Confirmed it happen

My company has several Lenovo X301 laptops with Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) running IE11. I load clean versions of Flash onto these laptops (latest version 12.0.0.77) and every single one of these laptops crashes when opening IE11.
One thing I noticed when I used the help.adobe.com site. Using IE11, the box which "dynamically displays the following information" shows the correct version of Flash player and OS but the browser says "None". If I run Chrome, it says the correct Flash version but the OS says "Windows 7 (32 bit) and the browser correctly says "Google Chrome".
The crash report for IE11, module name is Flash32_12_0_0_77.ocx.
    1. Why is the program unable to determine the correct browser?
    2. Why does it appear that a 64 bit program is trying to use a 32 bit plug-in?
    Any ideas?

    1. "User-Agent Strings"
Microsoft "rewrote" the User-Agent Strings for the abomination they call their latest and greatest browser. User-Agent Strings are what websites use to identify the browser you're using and provide the proper content for it's browser engine, like ActiveX stuff, and Flash or HTML5 video. Thanks to the geniuses in Redmond, WA, the User-Agent Strings for IE11 (which has a Trident engine), ID it as either "Gecko" (Firefox) or "Webkit" (Chrome). Problem is: when the site the directs to the content for one of these two engines, the Trident engine in IE can't intepret it and the site then sees IE as an "unidentified" browser.Microsoft has no immediate plans to "fix" the mess they've created.
    2. Chrome is a 32 bit browser, and will identify as such, including the plug-ins in it.
IE uses the plug-in from the SyWOW64 folder (WOW=Windows On WIndows - which runs 32 bit apps in the 64 bit environment)

  • Lenovo T440p laptop with Intel CPU remains at lowest clock (Win7)

I have an Lenovo T440p with an Intel Core i5 4300M CPU. 8GB RAM, SSD running with Windows 7 (preinstalled).
The only thing I did not like about this laptop was the screen, which I replaced (the whole LCD unit from another T440p - including the hinges) with a hd res version. It was rather easy; I did not have to remove the CPU/GPU.
Recently I noticed is that the laptop has become really slow, especially running VMs. In task manager I can see that the CPU is many times at 100% on all cores. CPU-Z is reporting that the CPU is running at the lowest possible clock:
        Core Speed: 798.85 MHz
        Multiplier x8
        Bus Speed 99.87 MHz
        Core Voltage of 0.659 V
I have set Windows already to "Maximum Performance" in the energy settings. I have also taken out the battery and am running with the power adapter. I also set the Lenovo Power Manager to maximum performance. Sadly, no improvement.
    What else can I try?

do you know where I have to look for errors? I also tried to reinstall the drivers, but it did not help..
I see something like this on my T420 Thinkpad sometimes. It turns out the backlight is just going out. I'm reluctant to say it's a kernel issue and not hardware - I have vague memories of it happening on Windows 7 as well, but that was years ago ...
It happens on Arch and Debian definitely, and the following fix works on both for me:
Opening a terminal (which I have bound to a key) and running "xset dpms force off", then moving the mouse or something to wake the display again brings it back to light.
Try that the next time it happens and see if it helps. Will at least confirm whether it's the same issue as me or not.

  • Dell Studio Laptop with Intel Core i5 S15Z with Intel Wireless Display issues (WIDI) (pkg deal)

i bought this laptop in Jan,2010 . Due to some h/w issue BB replace it   in April. When i tested my wireless display capability using the  the Intel Wireless Display  option i got a message "Intel My Wifi Technology not enabled. Restart the computer and try again." i have restarted my laptop several times. Also in the icon tray when i keep the mouse pointer on top of Intel My Wifi Technology it gives a message "Adapter not found". Please help.
I took the laptop to Geek squad in BB and they told me that they need to put the laptop to factory defualt and troubleshoot the issue that why the wireless adapter is not enabled.
Any suggestion as i don't want to go through this madness of backing up the data and restoring again. This will be my 3rd time . Any other alternatives .
Anybody using the above system with Netgear push2tv . Can you share the output of device manager as i like to see what wireless device you are seeing  as i am suspecting this laptop may not have one but then sice i see the s/w available i am confused ?

Almost every time we see a WIDI display issue, it is because the user is trying to use it too far away from the t.v.. It has a very short distance and when out of range, shows an adapter not found error. Playing with it, we found that over 15 ft it adapter wouldn't connect at all, and the closer the better as far as connectivity.

Oh heck ya, if thats all you say its going to be used for. It can be used for Facebook and all that stuff. Just dont try to do games like Sims 3 or whatever on it. If your son likes to go to the library, the laptop has Wifi so they can surf the net there. Libraries usually have filtered Wifi access, if you are unsure, check with the library!

  • Lowering fan speed?

Hi i bought a case fan of 120mm*120mm for giving better cooling to my pc and maybe OC a bit more. The problem with this fan is that is always running at 2400RPM only this fan is noisier than the rest of my other 3 fans together! I bought this one because a saw that had that 3pin head that can be conected to the motherboard. But sincerely a don't think that 3 pinhead does any difference since it only has one yellow wire.. How can i reduce this rpm so i can mantain my pc much more silent?? Maybe at 1200 rpm?

You can use the 4 pin molex connection and mod it for 7v or 5v. There are guides online, google search i'm feeling lucky yields....

  • BACKORDERED - Dell-Studio Laptop with Intel Core i7 Processor-Black Chainlink-S1747-3209CBK

I was excited that I purchased my first laptop and begin photo processing tons of photos from my last trip.  Yet the day after I purchased (4/22/) I found out it was backordered...sorely disappointed and a little upset that Best Buy did not announce this information at checkout or anywhere in the online ad.  The email said 1-2 weeks but the Customer Service agent said up to 30 days on the phone.  Has anyone experienced this with Best Buy and was the timeframe provided true to the actual time it took?  I'm afraid that they'll just tell me it's no longer available after I wait forever.
    Thanks!

    Good afternoon, Waiting.
I have located your order and I am checking with the appropriate teams to get a better understanding if we have incoming inventory or not.  Thanks for your patience with this!  I know how frustrating this is, but can assure you that we always have the full intention of shipping your order ASAP.
I also need to correct some of the conversation in this topic.  Your card is not charged until your order actually ships.  The pending charge on your account is only an authorization which is money that is held by your bank until we collect/charge (ship) or cancel the order.  In other words, no money has changed hands and a back ordered order certainly hasn't contributed to any "sales numbers".
I will post back as soon as I have more information about your order.

  • HP Laptop with Intel Core I5 and Beats Audio Sound Driver

So I just updated my laptop to Windows 8.1 and I think it deleted my sound driver. This has happened once before and the technology and information center on my campus fixed the problem. Now I am home for the holidays and it happened again but I do not know what they did to fix it. There is a speaker built into the laptop that has the beats audio sign on it. When I clicked on my sound settings in the control panel it said there were no devices to play audio through, but the laptop has a built in speaker. Please help, I tried rebooting and downloading a sound driver I found through these forums but neither worked.

What is the exact model of the unit? A product number can typically be found by pressing Fn + Esc (note: this is not the Windows product key).

  • MSI GE60 with i7-3630QM - Could someone please readout idle fan speed?

    Hello,
as I am having trouble with my idle fan speed, could someone with an MSI GE60 and EC Version 4.04 readout the idle fanspeed using RWeverything, please? It will take under 5 minutes.
    Steps:
    0. Power on the notebook freshly, you should not have used the coolerboost button yet in that windows session.
    1. Download RWeverything portable and extract it: http://rweverything.com/downloads/RwPortableV1.5.3.7.zip
    2. Run RWeverything, it will prompt for administrative rights.
    3. In the menu toolbar click on "Access" and then "Embedded Controller".
    4. Make sure the laptop is in complete idle and that Core Temps are around 39 - 42 °Celsius.
    5. Look at the Hex Table and search row "C0" and column "0D". There is a hex value surrounded by a lot of zeros. This is an inverted format of the fan rotational speed and it should be around Bx to Dx. Please take a note of the value an post it.
    6. Now turn on coolerboost for about 30 seconds, then turn it of again. Wait for the value to increase to Bx till Cx again. Write down that value again and post both values.
To get rid of RWeverything just close it and delete the extracted files and the zip file.
Thanks a lot in advance for helping me troubleshooting my fan problem!

i got gt70 however i think since the cpu is same the fan speed should be around same. for me idle - E3 turbo fan on - 72
That is very interesting, "E3"??? If you enable Turbo-Fan-Boost for 30 seconds, then disable it and wait for the fan to spin down completely, does it also revert to E3 or to a higher value?
The answer would most likely solve my problem.
    Big thanks in advance,

  • Fan speed on Qosmio G30

    My laptop is Qosmio G30-126.
How can I know fan speed?
I've tried some soft with hw sensor monitor & fan speed but it's not show any think about speed fan just CPU temperature?
Where is the problem and what can I do?

    hi vip78,
if no 3rd party software can detect the fan speed due to "unknown chipset" there are two options or some more...
    - ask your software manufacturer to implement the used chipset, takes long if it will happen
    - test other software like mb5 maybe this one can detect this value
generally said: if a software cant detect the value of the fan speed
    - either the is the chipset not implemented in your preferred software
    - or the value isnt readable cause there is no interface that gives any values to read
it's only important that the bios gives the os some informations about the "heat"-status....
pls go to powersaver options, sure you will get no info bout fan speed, but who cares if your system is working properly!
check mb5, make sure you got the latest version!
    good luck
