"lpadmin" group

what is the "lpadmin" group referred to during installation on a mac?

Thanks, the problem is solved (for now) but in case others run into this I'll post some info. I spent four hours being tossed between  Apple and HP yesterday while these "partners" blamed each other. In the end it was a little of both. I have full administrator privs on my Mac but an apple operating glitch duirng the installation process prevented them from being recognized. I had to create a new admin account, delete my existing one, then recreate it. This is a growing problem and Apple needs to walk you through it (even though according to one Apple bad ass "HP needs to take accountability." But HP is not without its headaches either...didn't realize I would need a printer cord for a cordless (wifi) printer. Luckily I managed to hunt one down so I could finish installation. Silly issues resulted in hours of aggravation.

  • Prompted for lpadmin group name and password when adding printer

I was running into a prompt to enter an lpadmin group name and password whenever I tried to do any printing, so I decided to go ahead and reset my printer list. Now I'm trying to add my local printer to the list and I'm still getting the same prompt.
    I found this solution: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2754
on the Apple website, but it's not working for me.
Perhaps it's because I'm unfamiliar with working in Terminal, but I'm entering the text exactly as it's written on the support page
    dseditgroup -o edit -p -a(affected_username) -t user _lpadmin
with, of course, my username substituted for the "(affected_username)" but I'm getting an error message in Terminal that says:
syntax error near unexpected token `('
Any suggestions or help? It would be much appreciated!

Looking at the command again step 3 says to replace "(affected_username)". Since the parenthesis are included in the quotes try leaving them out as well.

  • What is the lpadmin group?

After a new harddrive installation last week, I migrated my account back onto the system from a Time Machine backup. The folks at the Apple shop had set the default user to the name I had been using before, but the TM migration wouldn't overwrite this with my settings and forced me to create a new user account. All fine so far, if a little irritating.
Today I went to use my printer for the first time, and realised that it wasn't installed. When i selected it, I was prompted to enter the User Name and Password for a member of the 'lpadmin' group. Although my preferred user account is an admin, it wouldn't accept those details. The user name and password for the 'other' account worked, but I can't track down where this lpadmin group exists, and how to add my preferred username to it.
Anyone know what's going on here?
    thanks.

Lpadmin group is a system group used by the CUPS printing system that is integrated into OS X. For more detail you can Google "lpadmin" which will provide numerous informative links. If you open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder then enter the following:
    man lpadmin
    Press RETURN.
You will get the Unix documentation for the lpadmin command that you may find helpful. You can also access the CUPS system via your browser using http://localhost:631/.

  • Flippin' 'lpadmin' problem

Anyone who can solve this is really a 'Genius', in the true sense of the word:
I have Mac OSX 10.5.8 on my MacBook Pro. I am printing to Epson 1290, over a network. My printer is hooked up to my iMac OSX 10.4.11 via a USB cable and I use iProof PowerRIP software to print.
I have had problems printing over the last few days - my prints would just enter the print queue on my iMac then disappear. To add insult to injury yesterday the print queue on my MacBook Pro paused. Every time I tried to restart it I got the message: "Type the name and password of a user in the "lpadmin" group to allow AddPrinter to make changes. Name__: Password:_"
I googled the lpadmin problem and found this on Apple's own site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2754
Hurrah, I thought. Solved. I'm version 10.5.8 so this was written for me. But when I tried to follow the instructions it didn't work.
SO I rang Apple today. I was on the phone for an hour. After a lot of faffing around and trying to get the printer to work they reluctantly agreed to try the above article from their website. They don't usually advocate fiddling around with the Terminal. So I did it again with them advising me, and it didn't work again. I was passed on to a senior advisor who tried it and still it didn't work.
The senior advisor then got me to test whether my printer driver was working on the MacBook Pro by hooking it up to the printer directly. It worked. He asked me to do the same by creating a 'test' admin account on my iMac and trying to print - it didn't work.
So his conclusion was that my printer driver on the iMac needing upgrading. I downloaded the latest driver. This kind of worked - it now prints, but I think it isn't compatible with the old RIP software I have, because it prints with a big X across the page. So that's an issue to take up with iProof Systems tomorrow.
In the meantime, I went back to the MacBook Pro and tried printing. Lo and behold the 'lpadmin' prompt appeared again.
I'm now at my wits end. What else can I do? If a senior adviser at Apple can't help, what hope is there for me???!!!! I can't print and I have deadlines looming....

I have been plagued by a similar problem since converting from Tiger to Leopard.
Whenever I change most printer settings or PAUSE or RESUME the printer, a password window pops up that says:
"Type the name and password of a user in the "lpadmin" group to allow PSL20A0136F9.app to make changes."
In Preferences -> System -> Accounts, I have no groups of any kind and if I try to add a group called "lpadmin" it tells me it already exists.
The Apple fix did not work and the one provided by PAHU did. Apple Reps take note, fix TS2754 does not work and the fix provided by PAHU does.
Apple fix TS2754 command for Terminal:
    dseditgroup -o edit -p -a(affected_username) -t user _lpadmin
    PAHU version command for Terminal:
    dseditgroup -o edit -p -a(affected_username) -t group _lpadmin
The only difference is PAHU's version refers to the group _lpadmin as a group instead of a user.

  • Changing printer settings no longer works - requesting lpadmin password!

When pressing the _"Pause Printer"_ button, or changing printer settings, I get a dialog box come up saying:
*Type the name and password of a user in the "lpadmin" group to allow Photosmart C4500 series (HPF615EE).app to make changes.*
I have typed my username and password in several times, to no avail. I am the only administrator on this computer. Apparently I am not a member of this "lpadmin" group, and have never seen it before in my life!
    What do I do?
    (? Possibly since upgrading to 10.5.7 ?)

I am having the same problem. When I use the fix posted by John Blanchard, I "A Directory Service error occured"
My output of the "dscl" command is a little different
    AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default

So what changes do I need to make to John's terminal commands to fix my problem.
    Thanks.

  • Can't Add New Printer

In the Print & Fax section of my system preferences it used to show my USB printer. But then, for some reason, it disappeared. Now when I click the add printer button, I can see my printer under the default printers tab, however, when I click to add my printer it asks for a password of someone in the "lpadmin" group. My administrator password does not work for this.
If anyone has any ideas at all, they would be much appreciated.

  • Printers not shown in gtk apps under KDE 4.7

Sorry if asked before, I searched a lot and tried many things but couldn't find a fix.
No gtk based app are showing my configured printers. This includes LibreOffice, GIMP and Chromium. The printers are, however, shown properly in every kde app and in Opera. http://localhost:631/printers/ also shows "No printers."
    I'm running KDE 4.7.2.
    Things I already tried:
    - cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I already have installed libgnomeprint
    - HostNameLookups Double in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I'm already in lpadmin group, which I also added to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
I don't really know when this problem started, probably a few weeks ago.
    Thanks in advance.

Same issue here. Problem only occurs if you are using a custom shortcut (not one of the shortcuts mentioned in Main Shortcut.
I did a quick search and this is the only related post I have found on the topic so it seems like an Arch only problem. If it is a KDE problem, this http://www.commit-digest.org/issues/201 … 79ffe2ed8/ bug-fix could be the reason.

  • Admins can't add printer

I was messing around with the cups interface and all of a sudden no one can administer (add) printers. I did all the commands to add to the _lpadmin group. Doesn't matter. I even added a new administrator. Doesn't matter - the new account can't administer printers either. I keep getting asked for a login for a member of the lpadmin group. According to the CLI, I am a member of the _lpadmin group but doesn't matter.
I've tried all commands given in support forums. Everything shows right in the cli in terms of group membership but no one can administer printers.
I reset printers and also reset cups to the default configuration through the web interface localhost:631. I'm getting very frustrated. Can anyone help me?
    thanks in advance,

  • How can I grant users the ability to pause/resume printing without a "print operators group" password.

    Greetings,
We are running 10.8.5 on 30 machines in an active directory environment (graphics lab). The clients are experiencing a persistant error when pausing or resuming print jobs. Each time something is paused, it requires an administrator password to resume the job. Administrators are not always present so designers are locked out of all of the printers until we come in (or remote in) to authenticate.
I spoke with Apple today and they said they would not support active directory accounts and that the account must be edited by the department that created the account because the restrictions come from the Active Directory account preferences.
On the other hand, I ALSO read that I can edit this in the CUPS interface or modify it with the terminal command below, locally.
    dseditgroup -o edit -u admin_name -p -a user_name -t user _lpadmin
"dseditgroup" adds the user_name to a group (in this case, _lpadmin).
And admin_name is the name of your administrator's account.
    a) Must this be modified on the Active directory account or CAN I modify this on the local machine via CUPS or terminal?
    b) If so, how would I grant users the ability to resume printing without an admin password?
    c) If not, exactly what must be modified in the active Directory account to allow pause/resume without an admin password.
I have seen a terminal command that adds users to the print operatiors group (Ipadmin) and I have seen some info on editing the CUPS interface, If i must edit the CUPS interface to allow this, can anyone point to detailed instructions on how to make this change.
I also saw info on editing the CUPS interface but the suggestion lacked details as to how and how to return to default if it does not work.
I also saw a post with these suggestions below but without detail as to how one would carry this out.

Hello again.  For AD environments you can run the following command on each workstation:
    sudo dseditgroup -o edit -n /Local/Default -u localadmin -p -a "Domain Users" -t group _lpadmin
This command assumes you are typing this interactively on the machine.  Obviously change localadmin to the Mac's local admin's name.  When running you will be prompted for password twice.  Once to elevate permissions (sudo) and once to validate you are localadmin.
If you are using Apple Remote Desktop (or JAMF or other management suite), you can push this command out while embedding the localadmin's password.
    sudo dseditgroup -o edit -n /Local/Default -u localadmin -P yourpass -a "Domain Users" -t group _lpadmin
Please note, if your password uses special characters (/-\) this may fail over ARD.
In Mavericks, AD groups are cached once they are referenced.  If you are dealing with a lot mobile users (laptops) you might want to replace Domain Users with everyone

  • Unknown Group - Causes Finder Crash - How do I change group?

Many directories and files on my system after installing Leopard have an "Unknown" group and when I open a "Get Info" window on them and click the "Add" button the beachball appears and Finder crashes.
MacFixit stated "This problem appears to be due to a bad group setting. You can alleviate the issue by putting afflicted users back into the "Staff" group (GID 20) via the following Terminal command:
sudo dscl . append /Groups/staff GroupMembership username
(where "username" is replaced by the afflicted user's name)."
However, this did not solve my problem. Said files and directories still have "uknown" groups and Finder still crashes when I click the "Add" button in the Get Info window.
    How to fix?

    McToast wrote:
In Tiger, a group with the same name as your username would be created and the UID and GID would match. However, Leopard doesn't seem to be doing that anymore.
No, now it has reverted to the behaviour of 10.2 and before. All normal user accounts were made members of the "staff" group by default. admin users were also made members of the "admin" group, plus a couple of others. There are a lot more in Leopard. Trust me, you will have far fewer problems if you make your primary group 20. Your 'id' output should ideally look like
    macbook:~ michaelc$ id
    uid=501(michaelc) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff),98(lpadmin),81(appserveradm),
    103(com.apple.sharepoint.group.3),102(com.apple.sharepoint.group.2),
    101(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),104(com.apple.sharepoint.group.4),
    79(_appserverusr),80(admin)
(I put some new lines in there to stop the excessively long line).
I don't know what those sharepoint groups are, either, in case you're wondering

  • Type an Administrator Name and Password to allow lpadmin to make changes.

We have a lab full of PowerPC G5 Towers running 10.5 off a PowerPC G5 tower running 10.5 Server. We are using Open Directory and AFP to allow students to login to Network Accounts from Local Workstations. After Archive and Installing two of the G5 Machines and updating them, We encountered the error "Type an Administrator Name and Password to allow lpadmin to make changes." and it freezes up and doesn't allow us to enter the password or username or even move the mouse.

To use the solution in the link above in this case, here's one way to go about things:
    - Restart while holding down command and s at the same time to boot into single-user mode.
    - Use the following commands to mount the filesystem (these are also listed on the screen when you start up):
    $ /sbin/fsck -fy
    $ /sbin/mount -uw /
    - You're going to need the root password, so if you haven't already set one, type 'passwd', hit return, and set one.
    - Load Directory Services:
    $ launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
    - Run the command mentioned in that other post, entering your root password when prompted:
    $ dseditgroup -o edit -p -a admin -t group _lpadmin
    - You may need to run it twice, because the first time it may say something about upgrading your groups or something like that.
I hope that helps. It worked for me on multiple machines affected by this problem.

  • Lpadmin stoppning the login process

    Basic facts:
10.5.6 server with 10.5.6 clients over Airport (Airport Extreme and Airport Express).
    Managed clients with mobile accounts.
Services on server: DHCP, AFP, OD, NFS, SU, Netboot, DNS, iCal.
All worked fine up until one client updated itself to 10.5.7 around the same time I moved the printer from the Airport Express to the Airport Extreme.
What happens is when one try to login at this client machine it accepts the login but before anything changes a adminstration window opos up stating that lpadmin needs the administrator priviliges to do some changes. I cannot do anything with this, I cannot add the administartion login nothing.
If I try to login into the machine with the local account the same thing happens.
If I unbind the client from the OD I can login with the local account.
I have tried to update the server to 10.5.7 nothing changed.
I refomatted the client and when I bid the computer the OD same thing happens again.
So something has happend on the server, but what? And what can I do to fix this?

According to this thread, it solves the problem.
The thread indicated is this discussion.
This command, 'dseditgroup -o edit -p -a admin -t group _lpadmin', attempts to add a user 'admin' to a record type of 'group' named '_lpadmin'. If you do, 'dscl . -list /Groups', you will see a group '_lpadmin' already exists. If you do, 'dscl . -read /Groups/_lpadmin' it will show the local admins as members of the group. In this case, the '-t group', portion of the command is superfluous. If the user with the shortname 'admin' does not exist on the machine, then it does nothing.
More than likely the user shortname in the example, 'admin', was placed there to indicate an admin level user should be added to the '_lpadmin' group. So in order for this command, 'dseditgroup -o edit -a admin _lpadmin' to work, you would have to add all local admin users and any local users to the '_lpadmin' group.
What the dialog box is specifically asking for is admin privileges for the user '_lpadmin'. That is why this command, 'dseditgroup -o edit -a _lpadmin admin', is the correct syntax as it adds the user '_lpadmin' to the 'admin' group which satisfies the dialog box request and does not require you to add every user to the '_lpadmin' group.
Correct that dseditgroup does not require SUM, but if the user is having a login problem, any variables associated with login can be eliminated by booting into SUM.
If there are any jobs in any local printers on the machine that are not stopped, as soon as the machine boots, the jobs will start to spool. If the printers are unreachable or the problem under discussion is in effect, the machine could hang or become slow to respond. Reformatting the machine only removes the problem for local users. If a network user logs in, the spooled jobs will again start to print from the user's print spool. So the user's print jobs need to be cleared from the user's home folder on the server, also.

  • Cannot send email from an iPhone to a Outlook group.

    Hi,
My question is simple and I'd like an exactly same answer : Can iPhone users send emails from their iPhone's to one or more groups created in Outlook?
This is my situation: our organization is using iPhone to provide email, calendar, contact, task etc. to some of their employees. We are using Airwatch MDM Agent on user's iPhone because we have an Airwatch server in place. I have an user and she has an iPhone 5 and she has created some groups in Outlook but these groups are not reflected in her Contacts in the iPhone. I have update her phone with the latest update, although I was almost sure that this was not the issue, then I've found some interesting posts on internet saying that this was a known problem for the users with the previous iOS but I thought this might has been corrected with the iOS, apparently not.
Also I've tried ''the trick'' that is posted on several forums with the iCloud but neither so it's working. I am looking for a straight answer, if this works or not on iPhone's?
    Thanks,
    Sebastian.

There indeed ARE apps in the app store that will do what you want.  Just search and find the one that best fits your needs.

  • Grouping and Decimal characters in rtf templates.

    Hi guys and girls,
I’m really struggling with a problem here regarding the decimal characters for the prices in my output.
    I'm using XML Publisher 5.6.3.
My goal is to control the grouping and decimal character from my template.
The numbers in the XML data file can either be 10.000,00 or 10,000.00. The format is handled by the users nls_numeric_characters profile option.
The output of the template shall be based on the locale and not the data generated by Oracle Reports. For example: Reports to US customers shall show the numbers in the following format 10,000.00. Reports to our European customers shall show the numbers in this format 10.000,00.
How can I achieve this in my templates? Can it be achieved at all?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.
The problem is that the report is generating the output based on the users profile option nls_numeric_characters.
I have tried to override the users profile option in the before report trigger without any luck. I can alter selects so the query gets the numbers in the right format but then I would have to go through all queryes and reports which seem a bit wrong? Especially for the standard Oracle reports.
