Ls in the root of my $HOME sometimes freezes, but 'strace ls' finishes

A few minutes ago, I noticed that a Qt file dialog froze when changing directories up into my home directory. I assumed that I had forgotten to unmount some fuse filesystem - no, I hadn't. So I confirmed the freeze by executing "ls" in the shell. Yep. So, I became curious where the 'ls' froze, so I did an 'strace -f ls' - and that ran just nicely, listed the contents and exited with 0.
WTF. Ideas?

How long have you had your phone? Because if you've had it a long time, the battery in the phone might of died on you. Or have you dropped it in water, snow, from high up? All those things could of disconnected something internally in your phone, or permentaly damaged the internal hard drive its self, or the sims card.

It sounds like your phone is not successfully booting even though you have reset the device. I would next recommend attempting a backup and restore to iTunes with this article:

If you are unable to restore with iTunes I would next put the device into recovery mode, and attempt the restore again:

My iphone 5 screen has frozen I have pressed the top button and home button together but it's still not working

My iphone 5 has frozen. I have tried pressing the top and home button together but it still doesn't work.
Siri works but I can't swipe to unlock or get any further.

In IPhoto, after I submit my book to the Apple store, it shows it uploading, but does not finish the process.

Assuming you're referring to iPhoto on your Mac here are some potential fixes you can try:
1 -
Go to the System/Sharing preference pane and make sure Remote Apple Events is checked. If it is, uncheck it and then recheck and try ordering again.
2 -
Quit iPhoto.
From the Finder menu bar, choose Go > Utilities to access your Utilities folder (or press Shift-Command-U).
In your Utilities folder, open Keychain Access.
Find the "NetServices" entry in your Keychain Access window.
Select the "NetServices" entry and press the delete key.
Reopen iPhoto and attempt to place your order again.
You should be prompted to enter your account information if you deleted the Keychain entry successfully.
After entering your account information, you should be able to complete your order.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try ordering from there.
Note: Create a proof pdf file of the book as described in this Apple document, iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture, before ordering the book and keep the pdf file to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.

You need to hold both button until you see the apple logo and then release, try doing it with the phone plugged to the wall charger.

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

How do I get back into the HP Smart install that I started but couldn't finish?

I have HP LaserJet 1606dn with Windows XP. I am having trouble with printer and downloaded the HP Smart install for the wireless. I did all the steps and when it came to entering the pin number, I was unable to minimize that screen in order to retrieve the pin number to use. I ended up losing the page entirely. How do I finish up with the registration process so that my printer will start working?

Hi wcatty,
The Laserjet 1606dn doesn't support wireless connectivity. This printer can be connected to your router using an Ethernet cable or using a USB cable. To initiate the Smart install all you need to do is plug in the USB cable, and then when you get to the connectivity screen this is where you would select network connection. Follow the steps in the document below to install to your network using an Ethernet cable.

The newest version of iTunes begins downloading but will not finish and install.

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro, and the App Store lists iTunes 12.1 as an update to be downloaded and installed. I have tried multiple times but it will not install and continues to show up as an update. Is anyone else having this problem? If not, what do you suggest I do to solve the problem. All the other updated downloaded and installed with no problem.

How can I transfer the root account on my computer to a regular account?

Not sure if this in the correct category, but anyway...
Back in October 2010, I installed a Java update or something on my regular account, and it broke the account for some reason. I had no other account to use except for the root user that I enabled previously (just for testing). I logged into it and used it as my regular account, checking every so often to check if my regular account fixed itself. Sadly, it didn’t (at the time), but after a while, I upgraded my computer to Snow Leopard (I was previously running Leopard), I found that my old account finally fixed itself. Immediately, I attempted to copy over all of my files from the root account to the other account. I went onto the account, and it seemed to be a fresh account, so I assumed that it didn’t register the account files as legitimate and I guess it made it into a new account. I gave up after fiddling with it for a bit. To this day, I’m still using the root user as my main account, but a lot of things are broken (like Spotlight, Mail search, some other things) and I’d just like to know a clean way I could easily transfer all of the stuff from the root user to my old account (including all of the Library files and such). Please don’t say “You shouldn’t have used the root user because it’s really dangerous,” or whatever. I’ve been responsible with it for almost 2 years and I don’t think I could’ve done anything else. Thanks for any help.

Its doable with Terminal. Log into your new userfolder in the /Users/ folder and open Terminal and say:
whoami
This is the owner of your newly transferred files.
Log into your root account and Launch Terminal. You will use the scp (secure copy) command to copy your files over to the new userfolder, replacing PathToNewFolder with the path to your new folder:
cd /PathToNewFolder
scp -r /private/var/root/* .
The copied files will all have ownership of root account, so you will then set ownership of all the files to your new username that you remember from above, replacing "NewName" with your new username:

find . -exec chown $USER:admin {} \;
find . -type d -exec chmod 750 {} \;
find . -type f -exec chmod 640 {} \;
chmod 755 Library

Then you can login to your new account with all your stuff hopefully intact. If anything doesn't work respond here and it can be fixed.

I've downloaded premiere 12 and getting the error install adobe premiere elements 12 using the setup.exe in the root folder, I've done this but still get the error? any ideas?

WIthout proper system info and the exact error messages nobody can tell you anything. You are losing yourself in vagueries.

Satellite P200-140 sometimes freezes in XP

Hi,
I put Windows XP with SP2 on my P200-140 after purchasing it last week.
For some reason it sometimes freezes, but recovers by itself after around 10 minutes or so.
This only happens twice per day at most and sometimes happens while only runnig 1 or 2 programs...
I have installed all the latest Windows updates as well as the latest BIOS update.
I will probably re-install XP, but thought that someone might have a simpler fix.
Any ideas?

Well you could fix this if you would know what the problem exactly is!
But I dont think that someone here will be able to say what causes these strange hangups.
It would be firstly very interesting to know if the notebook runs correctly with the original delivered OS (vista).
Try to install the OS from recovery CD.
In such case the notebook will run with the factory settings.
You should test this without any installation of the 3rd party software and programs.
If the system will run stable, then this is definitely not a hardware problem but software issue.

The poster stated his/her WiFi is slower not cellular data.

There has been posts claiming that your router works on 2.4 MHz. Versus the 5 MHz. Available on A/C/B/G/N wireless routers.
See if a solution has been found other than switching to 2.4
