Satellite P200-140 sometimes freezes in XP

Hi,
I put Windows XP with SP2 on my P200-140 after purchasing it last week.
For some reason it sometimes freezes, but recovers by itself after around 10 minutes or so.
This only happens twice per day at most and sometimes happens while only runnig 1 or 2 programs...
I have installed all the latest Windows updates as well as the latest BIOS update.
I will probably re-install XP, but thought that someone might have a simpler fix.
Any ideas?

Simply fix???
Well you could fix this if you would know what the problem exactly is!
But I dont think that someone here will be able to say what causes these strange hangups.
It would be firstly very interesting to know if the notebook runs correctly with the original delivered OS (vista).
Try to install the OS from recovery CD.
In such case the notebook will run with the factory settings.
You should test this without any installation of the 3rd party software and programs.
If the system will run stable, then this is definitely not a hardware problem but software issue.

  • What is the "Base Score" of Satellite P200-140

Can anyone please tell me what is the Base Score (WEI) for the P200-140?

    Hi
Do you mean the Vista Base Score???
As far as I know the Base Score index supports an index from 1 to 6 (6 best)
This index provides a info about the computer performance and how fast the unit is.
The problem is that the P100 series was delivered with different hardware specifications and therefore the base score can be different.
Every hardware part like GPU, CPU, RAM, HDD affects the base score results

  • Satellite Pro U400 sometimes freezes when the power cord is plugged in

Hello! I know this problem has been discussed here and there but I would like to open a new thread on that. Here is the scenario.
I have recently bought a new Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-247 (PSU45E) with two batteries: (a) the original one, (b) additionally purchased Toshiba genuine PA3636U-1BRL, 7200 mAh. The notebook has the latest BIOS (4.80) and the latest drivers downloaded from Toshiba and installed (ConfigFree is not installed). I am using XP Pro SP3 (clean install done by myself). Everything is working very well, except for one thing:
Sometimes (but not always), when the notebook is working on battery and I plug in the power cord, everything freezes and I have to restart. Some observations:
    (a) it tends to happen more frequently when the low battery alarm has already sounded;
    (b) it seems to happen more frequently with the 7200 mAh battery and less frequently with the original battery;
    (c) it seems to happen more often when a USB device (e.g. mouse) has been connected with the notebook, but that is not a rule;
    (d) it seems to happen less frequently when I move the USB mouse at the time I am plugging in the power cord;
    (e) I have experimented a lot with Toshiba PowerSaver's settings (e.g. changed the CPU levels for my profiles) but nothing I have modified seems to change the situation;
    (f) I have tried various suggestions I found on different forums, but no avail (e.g. BIOS settings);
    (g) otherwise, I can say that I really have not seen a smoother computer, everything else is really working just fine, no other problems whatsoever :)
All this makes me think that this must be some kind of bug in the motherboard drivers, the PowerSaver driver or other drivers interacting with the battery, the CPU or possibly USB. Is there an explanation for this problem and can it be rectified somehow (e.g. by providing a driver update)?

    Hello, thanks for the reply!
My bad, of course I meant the chipset driver. That, however, does not change the essence of the question. Also, I know that a notebook should function properly even the AC adaptor is connected or not connected. That is why I posted my question.
As for the OS reinstall, sorry, I would not do that just on some wild guess from somebody. I recently finished the clean OS install. I have installed XP on dozens of notebooks in my life and I know what I am doing. I have been into computers and networking for 15 years and I know when I see a problem not related to how I install my OSes.
My personal opinion: this problem has not to do with the OS install since the same problem also existed when I test-installed the XP OS image from Toshiba's own downgrade CD (that was before I did a clean install from my own slipstreamed CD). And, if you really use a properly and carefully configured OS with all the necessary software, an OS reinstall is not something you just do every day.
As for the rest (testing the memory / adapter / motherboard etc.): as I have mentioned, similar (although not identical) topics have been raised in various other instances (e.g. at http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/B...EABCA64EE6C5D9) . That means that this problem is most probably not specific to my computer or even to U400 but it may happen with other Toshiba notebooks too. Therefore a (rather standard) suggestion to spend days on reinstalling (and in my case, carefully reconfiguring) the OS, checking the memory, adapter, mobo etc. does not sound as the most plausible one in this case. FYI, I always do full tests on hardware right after I have installed an OS. In this computer, all tests (Toshiba's own; 3rd party memory diagnostics, HDD diagnostics) were passed OK. Indeed, I did not have the AC adapter tested but as it otherwise works fine, the possible problem (if there is one) would be a minor one to notice, and would require testing at a Toshiba service centre (there is no direct Toshiba agency in my country). I think testing the AC adapter is the last resort as much more probably, the problem lies somewhere else.
Even if this problem is hardware-related, I do not expect Toshiba to replace all such hardware out there. However, on many occasions, hardware-related problems can be cured or alleviated on the software side (e.g. by a driver or BIOS update). Since it seems that other people are having similar problems with Toshiba hardware/software, I thought that maybe someone has found an actual solution or maybe there are Toshiba employees reading these forums who could look into it.

    3) When I select the network printer.

    Hi,
Try to boot in safe mode and verify if the computer works fine without freezing. To boot to the desktop in safe mode
keep tapping F8 key during restart. Once you see the option to boot in safe mode select it and press enter.
If the computer works fine in safe mode, you try to put the computer in clean boot state to make sure that third
party applications are not causing this issue with computer performance.
To perform a clean boot, follow the steps below:
    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    5. Click OK.
    6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
    7. After the computer starts, check if it works normally.

  • Satellite P200 - all Browsers Crashes after 5 to 20 mins

I am now losing the will to live with this laptop.
    Satellite P200-13z with Vista 32bit
The issue is this... no matter what browser I use it will freeze and hang. Opera, IE and Firefox. Sometimes it will be good and work for 20 mins, sometimes it will crash in 5 mins.
I have updated my drivers, done clean re-installs of the OS, tested my RAM, shut down all but MS services, increased virtual memory, prayed to various germanic gods.
I have Avast and Zone Alarm running alone from Non MS services. I may shut them down and see what happens but not sure it will be the cause.
I am of the opinion it may be memory related and the way it is handled, possible aligned with Adobe Flash (spit). Maybe a Vista issue.
Uninstalling that curse (Flash) does not seem to fix the issue either.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? 18 months I have been trying to fix this... and now I need the laptop fulltime it needs to be fixed.
It isn't an isolated problem either, google search 'all browser crash vista' to see what is happening out there, and a comple lack of knowledge or solution for this issue.
Many thanks in advance for some support.

    Thanks Andrej
By crash, the browser locks up and freezes. I can close firefox for example, but am unable to restart it or kill the process.
I have seen it happen on Mozilla Filezilla and browsers only.
I should have done it while under warranty, but unable to do that now. I just assumed it was a flash issue and would have been fixed under a future update. Also due to the number of people getting the same issue problem, assumed it wasn't the laptop.
Would you know what kinda reports I would need to post so folk can see what is happening under the hood so to speak?

  • Satellite P200-10O: Can't send emails using Vista Windows Mail

    Can any one help.
I have a Satellite P200-10O, with Vista installed. In Win Mail i have set up my email accounts as normal.
When i open Win Mail i can click send and receive and it searches for new messages, this can be repeated as often as you like. However when i create a new message and click send it stops working. The message goes into the outbox, if i open it in the outbox and click send, nothing happens, after a while of trying every thing freezes up. If i then close the program and re open it will send the message but then sometimes the send and receive doesn't work until you close and re open. Also the message counters do not up date.
I have tried everything i can think of, Vista forum, ISP, Toshiba. So far no joy although i will be getting back in touch with Toshiba again. Message is set to send immediatley.
No virus or firewall is being used.
    Cheers

    Hi buddy,
why are you making yourself such problems?? Why dont you use Mozilla Thunderbird which is faster, reliable and has better functions then this Vista Mail thingy??
I use Thunderbird now for some years and I love it. Its better than outlook and has so many functions which make the work a lot easier.

  • Satellite P200-1FT: 1680x1050 @ 60Hz not available on external 22" TFT

    Hi,
I bought a Toshiba Satellite P200-1FT some months ago (Graphic card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600). I wanted to use a 22" Hanns G HG216DP with its native resolution of *1680x1050px @ 60Hz* as a primary external monitor.
I connected my notebook to the TFT over HDMI. Unfortunately I cannot select this display setting in the Catalyst Control Panel. There is only 1680x1050 @ 30Hz available :(
Has anybody got the same problem? How can I fix it?
    Thank you very much,
    XeroX

Jayjay is right. Sometimes these issues can be caused by a bad cable, but I doubt this in your case.
Maybe you could try a HDMI 1.3 cable. You can get this in nearly every well sorted electronics store.
I remember that there was an option in the Catalyst control panel. Make sure the "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays" is unchecked. Helps for high resolutions.

  • Re: Satellite C870-1J6 -Win8 freezes

    Hi everyone,
My Satellite sometimes "freezes" wich is becoming quite annoying. It's been doing so since the very start and the moments appear to be random. Weither i'm using chrome or typing in word doesn't really matter. I'm running on windows 8 and couldn't find anything in the previous posts so thought i might ask...
    Any thoughts anyone?
    Best regards,

The mentioned freezing isnt a real freeing but I guess during this short period (30sec) the system does not respond because something stress and load the CPU.
I think some background process might be responsible for that
Start the task manager (win key + x -> task manager)
Within the task manager you could check the tab processes. Keep eye on the processes which needs the CPU performance while these short interrupt happens.
This could help to get more details about the freezing reason.

  • HDD and memory upgrade on Satellite P200-17C

    Hi there
I own Satellite P200 17c. My current memory is DDR2 PC2-5300 2gb. I would like to upgrade it to DDR2 PC2-6400 4gb ram. Can i do that and is there going to be some improvement of the speed if I upgrade to PC2-6400 instead PC2-5300?
On my P200 17c I have 2 HDDs. 2x100gb. I would like to upgrade one of those two HD from 100gb to 320gb 5400 rpm. Can i do that? and is it going to be some difference if I upgrade with HD that has 7200 rpm?
    Thank you

First of all: your machine is able to handle a maximum RAM capacity of 4GB but please be aware that you wont be able to use the full 4GB due to some chipset limitations which are explained in the following article: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB82022E0000R01.htm
Regarding the module speed: the chipset specifications are defined for PC5300, so it will not enhance your speed when installing faster modules.
If you would like to upgrade your harddisk then just do it like you want, because there shouldnt be any limitations, you can install a drive with 7200rpm together with a slower one.
The only difference will be that the faster drive will be faster. The whole system performance would only raise when youre installing your OS on the faster drive (which is recommendation from my side :) )

  • Satellite P200-17C: graphics in XP seems to be running a bit sluggish

    Hi all
    I've just bought a Satellite P200-17c.
I've set up my dual boot with Vista and XP (that was REALLLLY hard) everything seems to be almost OK, but..... The graphics in XP seems to be running a bit sluggish, when you scroll a window in a browser it seems to 'refresh' in blocks - it's not moving right. If I go to device manager under other devices there are two things for which there is no driver install, one says: VGA controller, the other says: unknown device!
It's true that I haven't istalled the ATI drivers yet.... But that's because the only place I can find to get them for XP is from the Toshiba support area, the file is 162MB (not that big) but it is downloading at such a slow pace even though I have a fast connection, I don't even know if it will work?!
I've tried some things from the ATI site directly, althought I was trying to install the drivers for the ATI HD2400 graphics card that the machine has, on installation it said it couldn't continue as there wasn't any compatable hardware connected.....
My download from the Toshiba area has already gone wrong once, meaning I have to re-start it.
Does any one have any light they can shine on this issue. If any one has the driver downloaded already and fancies sticking on mega upload or something, that'll be fun???!!!!!
    Ideas suggestion welcome!

    Hi
I was very curious about driver offered on Toshiba support page. You are right about file. It is about 160 MB and I have needed 20 minutes for download but download was successfully and I do not see any problem that you can not do the same.
Extract the file and just use setup.exe to start driver installation.

  • After some upgrades on my Satellite P200 cannot use HD-DVD Player

Since I upgraded my PC Satellite P200 (BIOS, Driver ATI HD2600, Package VAP and HD-DVD Player), I can no longer read my HD-DVDs
Error message is: "Unable to send the video to an external device. Please turn off the display device."
I had no problem before the upgrades.
I have no problem with my DVD player on medias.
    What happens?
My drive is a HDDVD SD-L802B.

I installed on my PC (P200-1DE / PSPB6E / OS Vista) proposed TEMPO software.
This software referred me to the site Toshiba and proposed several updates to:
    - The BIOS (2008)
    - HD2600 Drivers ATI card (2008)
    - HD DVD Player
    - VAP Package
At this time, I try to find the references on the site, but I am surprised ; they are no longer in the "Downloads & Drivers BIOS site TOSHIBA
I downloaded the drivers on my PC.
I can give you the exact references tonight (I write on another PC).
Were there any problems in the proposed updates on the period of November 2007 to the end of February 2008 ...
Besides, the problem of reading the HD DVD, I have not noticed any major problems except perhaps:
    - I start a bit slower (It seems to me that this is the connection to the Internet via WiFi, which slowed the start)
    - an error when burning a CD
    - a problem of installing software as the DVD no longer wanted to stop rotating; I had to stop and to do again PC installation
    Do I go back? ...
I made a Ghost of my machine before these updates, but if it is a problem of BIOS, I think I will not be able to do

  • Satellite P200-RT1 - FN keys don't work after downgrade to XP

    Hi
    I have a Satellite P200-RT1, PSPBOC.
I have downgraded my operating system from Vista to XP.
Now I am having a driver issue, I have installed all of the drivers for my computer. I have installed all of the HotKey utilities for my computer as well and I still have an issue. Some of my FN Key functions don't work. The ESC to F5 Functions work but all of the functions above there do not.
I am really looking for the Display Brightness and Dimmer keys F6&F7 to work, if possible I would also like the F9 key touch pad enable/disable key to work as well, which as of right now they don't.
I was wondering if there is a driver that I am missing and if so which driver is it. I have taken my computer into three computer shops now and no one can figure this out. Please Help ME!
    Thanks Ken.

    Hello
It seems that your notebook is a Canadian model and therefore you can download the drivers on the Toshiba Canada website:
    http://www.toshiba.ca
The problem is that I cant find Windows XP drivers on this website. :(
The only way I know is that you try the drivers and utilities from the European website. Normally the models are very similar and maybe it works. Its worth a try.
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Try to download and install Toshiba Accessibility and Controls (Driver).

  • Satellite P200-1B6: Sound Driver update fails and HD-DVD Player doesn't work

I have just bought a Satellite P200-1B6 laptop and spent the day installing the updates recommended by the TEMPO program. One of these was a Sound Driver update from RealTek but on running this it fails about 80% of the way through with an error: 'Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !!'.
Now the Toshiba HD DVD player fails to start with an error 'Unable to output the video to an external device.
Please switch your display device by pressing the Fn + F5 keys after ending the application'. I've tried this but it seems to have no effect.
I'm now regretting starting to update the installed drivers. Should I try to rebuild the machine using the recovery discs or is there another solution that someone has found? Or have others found the upgrade works?
    Any advice welcome

Last month I upgraded my PC Satellite P200 (BIOS, Driver ATI HD2600, Package VAP and HD-DVD Player).
But after this update, I was no longer be able to read my HD-DVDs
Error message was: "Unable to send the video to an external device. Please turn off the display device."
The problem was much of the update Realtek R1.76 (Realtek Sound Driver - 6.0.1.547 - 20/11/07) currently proposed on the site toshiba.
Indeed, the P200-1DE is equipped with Realtek ALC268 Audio Codec.
The latest update of this codec is R1.89. I downloaded from the site Realtek and it has allowed me to solve the problem.
    [http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level= 4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false]

  • Satellite P200-1EE - Hard disk not found if I try to install XP

Hi and I have a problem.
I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite P200-1EE series laptop running (of all things) Vista and nothing but problems ever since so im trying to install XP professional and overwrite Vista.
But whenever I try to install it says "hard disk not found..... unable to access"
I've heard of problems like this before something like a "software block protocol"
    Any suggestions?

    Hi!
Why you dont search in the forum before you start a new topic?
I mean you will hundreds of threads about this issue here in the forum and you will find the solution of your problem in few minutes.
Well, the reason for this is because you need the SATA drivers before you can install Windows XP. As far as I know your notebook is equipped with an Intel chipset and so you need the Intel Storage Manager. You can integrate the drivers using an external FDD or nLite [www.nliteos.com]. Furthermore this document could be useful for you:

  • How to recover only the C drive on a Satellite P200-1FJ

Hi, I have a Satellite P200-1FJ and I want to recover Vista but only on my first partition.
My HDD is divided in 3 partitions and I don't want to loose data. How can I recover only the C partition using the Product Recovery CD that came with my laptop ?

    Hi,
There's a specific order in which the downloads will need to be installed. When the flash cards are installed they interact with the Toshiba Product Information tool that is present on the machine; should this not be installed then it will return an error as it thinks the machine is not a Toshiba.
The downloads you need to install (in order) are:
    TOSHIBA Value Added Package
    TOSHIBA Flash Cards Support Utility
    TOSHIBA Hardware Setup Utility
    TOSHIBA Supervisor Password
    TOSHIBA SD Memory Utilities
    TOSHIBA ConfigFree
    TOSHIBA Assist
What I would recommend is removing whatever Toshiba software you have installed first and then try it in that order and see what happens :)
Let me know how you get on,
    Regards,
    Nukey
