Lsmw, bapi, bdc- session, bdc-calltransaction

Hi Experts,
   Can you please tell me which method should be used to upload data
1. lsmw
2. bapi
3. bdc-session
4. bdc-calltransaction
  which method should be used when?, why?, advantages?
I know the process of doing all this but my question is which method should be followed and when, what will be the advantages and disadvantages.
points will be rewarded.
Thank you.
regards,
Admir.

hi,
To decide which method shukld use, we have to understand the differences first.
for 10000 records i will go for session method
Session method.
1) synchronous processing.
2) can tranfer large amount of data.
3) processing is slower.
4) error log is created
5) data is not updated until session is processed.
Call transaction.
1) asynchronous processing
2) can transfer small amount of data
3) processing is faster.
4) errors need to be handled explicitly
5) data is updated automatically
Session method is to populate the data by filling BDC structure
and keep as session to process from SM37 to post in appropriate Transaction.
Call transaction method is to post the data directly into the Transaction from an Executable program.
Session method SAP defined Function modules.

  • Differences between  BDC , LSMW, BAPI,CATT

    Hi ABAP Gurus,
    Just I have completed my ABAP course. Could you please explain the differences between BDC(Session and Call Transaction),LSMW,CATT and BAPI. Their advantages & limitions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Chandra Mohan

    BDC techniques used in programs:
    1) Building a BDC table and calling a transaction,
    2) Building a session and a set of BDC scenarios and keeping the session available in SM35,
    3) Building a session and lauching the transaction right after closing the session.
    BDC using Call Transaction
    LSMW:
    The Data Transfer Workbench (or DX Workbench, transaction SXDA) is an integrated SAP tool that supports data transfer and analysis. It does not have the built-in features for mapping for source structures to target structures, but it will allow you to integrate Legacy System Migration Workbench (LSMW) objects as processing tasks within a run definition. The DX workbench has many features for creating test data and performing data migrations - for example, logging of data migration runs. However, if you need to map or convert data, you should use the LSMW. Or, you can integrate your LSMW objects as task within a more user-friendly data migration run, in which the LSMW project steps "Read data", "Convert data," and "Start IDoc processing" are automated and use the features of both tools. If you donot need logging and automated data migration runs, you can perform your data migration without the DX Workbench.
    BDC:
    Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the oldest batch interfacing technique that SAP provided since the early versions of R/3. BDC is not a typical integration tool, in the sense that, it can be only be used for uploading data into R/3 and so it is not bi-directional. BDC works on the principle of simulating user input for transactional screen, via an ABAP program. Typically the input comes in the form of a flat file. The ABAP program reads this file and formats the input data screen by screen into an internal table (BDCDATA). The transaction is then started using this internal table as the input and executed.
    BDC using Call transaction involves calling an SAP transaction in back ground from within the ABAP
    program. The process involves building an Internal BDC table containing the screen information needed to
    execute the required transaction and then passing this to the Call transaction command (See code example).
    The full procedure for creating a BDC program is as follows:
    What is the difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC?
    Session method.
    1) synchronous processing.
    2) can tranfer large amount of data.
    3) processing is slower.
    4) error log is created
    5) data is not updated until session is processed.
    Call transaction.
    1) asynchronous processing
    2) can transfer small amount of data
    3) processing is faster.
    4) errors need to be handled explicitly
    5) data is updated automatically
    BATINPUT/DIRECT INPUT
    A: Batch-inputs can not be used to fill the "delivery due list" screen because it is not a dynpro. This is a standard SAP report. A SAP report (check with "System -> Status") may be called using SUBMIT sentence with the appropriate options . It is preferred to call a report than create a Batch-input program.

    BAPI - Some times the transaction screens changes, in those cases the BDC's fail as they purely refer to the screen elements. BAPI's provide a more consistent way to make entries in SAP systems without referencing the screen elements but still adhering to the underlying business logic, so the data entry is syntactically and semantically correct.

    Hi Karthik,
    All the 3 can be used for the same purpose.
    BDC - was the first provided by SAP for mass data entry in to SAP Database with Screen checks
    LSMW - Originated as a 3rd party tool with many more functionalities and ease of use
    Hope this helps.

  • LSMW-Error during processing of BDC session change to material master MM02

    I have created an LSMW for changing material master data.  I recorded MM02 and using the "select views" screen selected the accounting 2 view and entered the information in the fields on that screen requiring changes.  I've set up all of the technical screens for the LSMW.  However, when I process the BDC session with "display errors only", the program stops at the select view screen with an error message "Select at least one view".  Any ideas how I can process through this screen so that the Accounting 2 screen opens in the BDC session?  One further note, I set that selection as a constant in the field mapping and conversion rules screen.  The field name recorded as KZSEL_05.

    hi
    one question how did you choose the view? i mean to ask by scrolling down using mouse or page down.
    the scrolling by mouse is not recognized by recording and that may be the error. so whenever you have to go down in screen please use page down not scrolling at least in LSMW.

  • Passing BAPI  Error Messages to BDC  Session.

    Hi,
    Can any one drive the idea how to convert rather passing BAPI error messages into BDC session.
    regards.

    Naveen,
    I am sure you already have the logic of "If the call transaction is errored out you create a BDC session for the same data".
    Now, when your BAPI fails, irrespective of the error, you need to build the BDCDATA table and pass the data to the session. So, I don't you really need to know the errors and pass them to the BDC Session.
    Check the RETURN table of the BAPI, if it has got E / A / X error types then you can build the BDCDATA table and create the session.
    Regards.
    Ravi

  • Lsmw-Bdc Session Not Closed

    Hi all,
       In as91 transaction i did lsmw.
       After 14 steps the data also processed still am getting one thing i.e
       Transaction ended Unexpectedly.
       In that screen am getting like this (you are existing the trans
                                                             do you still want to keep the batch i/p data [yes] [no].)
    Both yes n no i enterd but the session is not close it repeats , again it goes to as91 initial screen..
    Pl guide me..
    Regards:

    HI,
    As per my understanding you are passing the more then one record to the LSMW.
    LSMW creates the Session with all the records. Each time it processes the record the set of screen will be displayed with the values populated by data you passed. this process will happen number of times as number rcords you pass to LSMW.

  • Creation of Material using BDC Session method & global class

    Hi
    Creation of Material using BDC Session method & global class by using oops.
    can anyone plz help me out

    Hi,
    it looks like it's not possible to call this BAPI wihtout material number. Here is a quote from BAPI documentation.
    When creating material master data, you must transfer the material
    number, the material type, and the industry sector to the method. You
    must also enter a material description and its language.

  • BDC Session In Dynpro

    Hi,
               Is it possible to use BDC session to update data for TC : PA40 using webdynpro application . ...If so could you provide some example how to achive this ...
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    You can create a FM/BAPI for the BDC related stuff and then call these from your web dynpro application.
    Thanks,

  • Mass reversal of GL docs created by BDC session

    I need to mass reverse GL documents posted in BDC session. I tried to record a BDC for F.80 but there is a problem with dynamic selections (the session name I want to reverse is in dynamic selections). The screen fields in dynamic selections have dynamic names (e.g. %%DYN001) and filling them from BDC does not work. If I replay the record created by SDHC I get the error than the field does not exist on the main program selection screen. How can I pass the session name to the BDC?
    Or, is there any alternative (e.g. BAPI/FM for mass reverse that can read the session name too)?
    thanks to all

    Hi Jan,
    I don't know this object type, so maybe there's a BAPI as you suggest.
    If you don't find one, you may pre-fill the LDB selection screen parameters by creating a little custom program, that will call the report behind F-80 using SUBMIT ... WITH FREE-SELECTIONS ... Then you may either create a Z transaction to launch this custom program, or simply use SA38/SE38 if the user is authorized to it in the productive system. Then you'll call this transaction using batch input.

  • Re:Bapi's and Bdc's

    hi friends,
                     Iam new to Bapi's and Bdc's plz tell me which sites are good for learning and i also want some realtime examples or codes.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    what is BAPI?
    BAPI stands for Business API(Application Program Interface).
    A BAPI is remotely enabled function module ie it can be invoked from remote programs like standalone JAVA programs, web interface etc..
    You can make your function module remotely enabled in attributes of Function module but
    A BAPI are standard SAP function modules provided by SAP for remote access. Also they are part of Businees Objest Repository(BOR).
    BAPI are RFC enabled function modules. the difference between RFc and BAPI are business objects. You create business objects and those are then registered in your BOR (Business Object Repository) which can be accessed outside the SAP system by using some other applications (Non-SAP) such as VB or JAVA. in this case u only specify the business object and its method from external system in BAPI there is no direct system call. while RFC are direct system call Some BAPIs provide basic functions and can be used for most SAP business object types. These BAPIs should be implemented the same for all business object types. Standardized BAPIs are easier to use and prevent users having to deal with a number of different BAPIs. Whenever possible, a standardized BAPI must be used in preference to an individual BAPI.
    The following standardized BAPIs are provided:
    Reading instances of SAP business objects
    GetList ( ) With the BAPI GetList you can select a range of object key values, for example, company codes and material numbers.
    The BAPI GetList() is a class method.
    GetDetail() With the BAPI GetDetail() the details of an instance of a business object type are retrieved and returned to the calling program. The instance is identified via its key. The BAPI GetDetail() is an instance method. BAPIs that can create, change or delete instances of a business object type
    The following BAPIs of the same object type have to be programmed so that they can be called several times within one transaction. For example, if, after sales order 1 has been created, a second sales order 2 is created in the same transaction, the second BAPI call must not affect the consistency of the sales order 2. After completing the transaction with a COMMIT WORK, both the orders are saved consistently in the database.
    Create( ) and CreateFromData! ( )
    The BAPIs Create() and CreateFromData() create an instance of an SAP business object type, for example, a purchase order. These BAPIs are class methods.
    Change( )
    The BAPI Change() changes an existing instance of an SAP business object type, for example, a purchase order. The BAPI Change () is an instance method.
    Delete( ) and Undelete( ) The BAPI Delete() deletes an instance of an SAP business object type from the database or sets a deletion flag.
    The BAPI Undelete() removes a deletion flag. These BAPIs are instance methods.
    Cancel ( ) Unlike the BAPI Delete(), the BAPI Cancel() cancels an instance of a business object type. The instance to be cancelled remains in the database and an additional instance is created and this is the one that is actually canceled. The Cancel() BAPI is an instance method.
    Add<subobject> ( ) and Remove<subobject> ( ) The BAPI Add<subobject> adds a subobject to an existing object inst! ance and the BAPI and Remove<subobject> removes a subobject from an object instance. These BAPIs are instance methods.

    Bdc to Bapi
    The steps to be followed are :
    1. Find out the relevant BAPI (BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE for VA02).
    [for VA01 use BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2]
    2. Create a Z program and call the BAPi (same as a Funtion module call).
    2. Now, if you see this BAPi, it has
    -> Importing structures.
    eg: SALESDOCUMENT: this will take the Sales order header data as input.
    -> Tables parameters:
    eg: ORDER_ITEM_IN: this will take the line item data as input.
    Note :
    Only specify fields that should be changed
    Select these fields by entering an X in the checkboxes
    Enter a U in the UPDATEFLAG field
    Always specify key fields when changing the data, including in the checkboxes
    The configuration is an exception here. If this needs to be changed, you need to complete it again fully.
    Maintain quantities and dates in the schedule line data
    Possible UPDATEFLAGS:
    U = change
    D = delete
    I = add
    Example
    1. Delete the whole order
    2. Delete order items
    3. Change the order
    4. Change the configuration
    Notes
    1. Minimum entry:
    You must enter the order number in the SALESDOCUMENT structure.
    You must always enter key fields for changes.
    You must always specify the update indicator in the ORDER_HEADER_INX.
    2. Commit control:
    The BAPI does not run a database Commit, which means that the application must trigger the Commit so that the changes are read to the database. To do this, use the BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT BAPI.
    For further details... refer to the Function Module documentation for the BAPi.
    Bapi to VB(Visual Basic)
    Long back I had used the following flow structure to acheive the same.
    Report -> SM59 RFC destination -> COM4ABAP -> VB.exe
    my report uses the rfc destination to create a COM session with com4abap. com4abap calls the vb.exe and manages the flow of data between sap and vb exe.
    You need to have com4abap.exe
    If com4abap is installed you will find it in sapgui installatin directory , C:Program FilesSAPpcsapguiRFCSDKcom4abap.
    else refer OSS note 419822 for installation of com4abap
    after making the settings in com4abap to point to the vb program and setting up rfc destination in sm59 to point to com4abap session , you can use the following function modules to call the vb code.
    for setting up com4abap and rfc destination please refer to the documentation for com4abap.
    Invoke NEW DCOM session
    call function 'BEGIN_COM_SESSION'

    BDC
    BDC:
    Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
    Features :
    BDC is an automatic procedure.
    This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
    BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
    BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
    Types of BDC :
    CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
    CALL TRANSACTION
    BATCH INPUT METHOD:
    This method is also called as ‘CLASSICAL METHOD’.
    Features:
    Asynchronous processing.
    Synchronous Processing in database update.
    Transfer data for more than one transaction.
    Batch input processing log will be generated.
    During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
    CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
    This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
    Features:
    Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
    Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
    Transfer data for a single transaction.
    Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
    No batch input processing log is generated.

  • MC62 in a BDC session

    Hi there,
    I was wondering if anyone can help - I am setting up some LSMW projects to upload information into transactions MC94 and MC62.
    MC94 is no problem, but the issue I have is that when I record transaction MC62 (either using the recorder within the LSMW or the standalone SHDB) that the characteristics screen is not displayed.
    According to the technical information, the screen for BDC session is SAPMMCP3 5500 - I have tried manually adding this into the recording but it just ignores it.
    Any ideas how I can force MC62 to behave how it does when I run it normally ? Without this characteristics screen I cannot specify the sales district and sold-to party that will then be uploaded from a spreadsheet.
    Regards
    H Smith

    Dear Helen,
    Please note, that tr. MC62 has not been designed to be used in batch
    input. It is a online transaction and therefore there might be some
    restrictions.
    But in case you are using consistent planning, there is a even better
    solution than using a batch input. You can build up your planning
    hierarchy automatically based on data in your infostructure. This
    functionality can be accessed with tr. MC9A.
    best regards

  • What is BDC Session & Z-Program

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me what is BDC Session & Z-Program ?
    Rajarshi

    Dear Rajarshi,
    BDC (Batch Data Communication) - is one of the methods for uploading the data. You have two options with BDC, namely Session and Call Transaction.
    First you would record a particular transaction with SHDB simulating sample transaction entry. Then you would use this recording to create a 'Z' program.
    With session method a session will be generated that needs to be processed in Transacton SM35 with Foreground, Background, or Errors only mode. You can view and analyze session log after processing the session.
    With call transaction you would specify the mode in the program itself. Hence, no session is generated in SM35 in this case.
    please visit the following link for more information:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/fa/097119543b11d1898e0000e8322d00/frameset.htm
    Z programs are custom programs. They could be reports, transactions, scripts, smartforms, BDCs, BAPIs etc. You would develop them if there is no SAP standard program available that meets your requirement.
    Reward points if this is helpful.

    Naveen.

  • URGENT - HOW TO PROCESS A BDC SESSION (IN BACKGROUND) FROM INSIDE A REPORT

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement wherein I need to create a BDC session for mass update(from file) of one transaction and check if at all that update has taken place and proceed with the same session for another transaction.
    For this I need to know how to process the session in background in a report, so that if the processing is done, the next set of data to update a different transaction can happen.
    All inputs are welcome and highly valuable to me.
    If someone is unable to intrepret this, I'll detail it again.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vaishnavi Varadarajan

    Hi,
    1.Use RSBDCDRU is an exe pg.With this u can download the logs into local file.
    2.It will create the spool request .from there u can download or print.
    OtherWise:
    Use the code from the link below. U need to provide the session queue id as input and it will download the log to an excel file. U can change it to  ur reqmt.

    I appreciate

    Hi,
    i guess, the error is due to, u didnt pass the TCODE parameter in BDC_INSERT FM.
    Try by passing it...
    CALL FUNCTION 'BDC_INSERT'
    EXPORTING
    TCODE = TCODE*
    POST_LOCAL = NOVBLOCAL
    PRINTING = NOPRINT
    SIMUBATCH = ' '

    dynprotab = I_BDCDATA

    INTERNAL_ERROR = 1
    NOT_OPEN = 2
    QUEUE_ERROR = 3
    TCODE_INVALID = 4
    PRINTING_INVALID = 5
    POSTING_INVALID = 6
    OTHERS = 7
    Hope it works!!
